Cullinan: South Africa won't be overawed by spin

Match facts

Friday, April 4, 2014
Start time 1900 local (13.00 GMT)

Big Picture

It's a world-tournament semi-final. One of the teams has been super smooth, stream-rolling opponents and making for boring efficient one-sided cricket. They have been unbeaten and without a bother in the world. The other has been almost dysfunctional, sorting out batting orders on the fly, relying on a crazy fast bowler with crazy eyes, a wristspinner, and jailbreaks even against minnows. South Africa against a subcontinent nation, then. Except that it is all inverted. India have played like South Africa usually do, probably their smoothest world tournament ever, but they also have the experience of going further: they are the current holders of the World Cup and Champions Trophy, and are gunning for this to complete the set. South Africa have played like a team from Asia, a bit like Pakistan, coming into the tournament uncertain, playing under different captains, somehow finding momentum when it has begun to matter.

South Africa have made four world-tournament semi-finals before this without progressing further. Overall they have made 10 tournament semi-finals, and have progressed only once. Almost every time they have brought to the semi-final the form their opponents have brought to this one. They will be hoping the mad scrambling this time brings them better luck. And, by the way, the only time they won the semi-final, they went on to win the tournament, the 1998 Champions Trophy, coincidentally in Bangladesh.

This classical tournament semi-final duel, albeit with roles inverted, is also a last opportunity for India to get one back over their tormentors from the South African season. South Africa will want to continue their domination of India, albeit in much more challenging conditions, after they were unbeaten on the tour. If India can win this, it will give them a measure of satisfaction after they came close to pulling off a great upset in Johannesburg.

No team has been able to play its natural game against India so far in this tournament. Pakistan came unstuck against discipline, West Indies were not allowed to hit the sixes they like, Bangladesh never really turned up, and by the time Australia came up against them they were already a demoralised side. This is where South Africa's unpredictability, even though this will be their first match at what has been India's base, will provide India a challenge. It's not often that you don't know what to except of South Africa, but this tournament has not been about the expected.

In the spotlight

Before this tournament began, Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir would have cast an eye on how their post-retirement funds are doing, and now they are two of the leading wicket-takers and key players for their sides. Legspin has never had it better in T20Is.

Faf du Plessis denied Chennai Super Kings team-mate MS Dhoni that Test win at Wanderers, and they are now opposing captains one last time before they join each other in the IPL. Du Plessis is respectful of how India have done well under Dhoni in big tournaments, but will want to deny him one last time this season.

Team news

Yuvraj Singh, who missed a training session two days before the match because of a knock he sustained playing barefoot football, is expected to play, said India's media manager. The two other decisions to make for India are between Mohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami and between Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan.

India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ajinkya Rahane/ Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohit Sharma/ Mohammed Shami

Many, including India, are expecting Aaron Phangiso to play for South Africa, but du Plessis said they will make the decision only after watching the women's game before the men's semi-final. Du Plessis' comeback over Farhan Behardien is the natural change now that the over-rate ban has been served.

South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis (capt.), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Beuran Hendricks/ Aaron Phangiso, 11 Imran Tahir

Pitch and conditions

The pitches are getting more and more tired, which is making chasing difficult, but there is some rain forecast for Friday, which could make matters interesting.

Stat and trivia

  • At six matches, this is India's longest winning streak in T20 internationals. If India win this tournament, they will have equalled the longest overall streak, which belongs to England and Ireland.
  • India have never lost a semi-final under Dhoni.
  • AB de Villiers is three short of becoming the 16th man to 1000 Twenty20 international runs.

Quotes

"They'll have to use it for themselves for our advantage. We are not looking at things like that or what happened in the past. If they want to do it, it's their problem."
R Ashwin's response to South Africa's poor record in tournament semi-finals

"Obviously, the wicket in Dhaka is completely different to Chittagong. We played all our games there, and India has played all their game here. Definitely from a conditions point of view, they are more used to it than we are."
Faf du Plessis points out the limitation every Group 1 team carried

@Mehr Habib Saleem Yes bro, God listened your prayers and SA did a history by losing big games ... Keep praying lol

Posted by vkumar_086 on (April 4, 2014, 20:57 GMT)

@ KaviSL...losing the game is SL's turn on sunday....we never care for toss, weather, D/L method unlike SL....another final loss is on the way for SL, it seems both players and fans of SL are worried very very much...

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:56 GMT)

@KaviSL, India would have bowled first anyway they love chasing and do it pretty well!! This is from an Aussie, it's gonna be a cracker can't wait !!!!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:49 GMT)

best of luck for South Africa.....

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:48 GMT)

@kaviSL . i think Dhoni won the toss and ball first..LoL

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:45 GMT)

This is why India has practiced chasing as often as possible. Exactly for such situations!

Posted by anvesh4444 on (April 4, 2014, 12:40 GMT)

easy to guess, team batting first gonna win this match

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:39 GMT)

Before the game fun time for Indians, suffering time yet to come, they think South Africa is Canada cricket team

Posted by KaviSL on (April 4, 2014, 12:37 GMT)

india loss the toss and loss the game and loss the cup :)

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:35 GMT)

South Africa have been holding their nerves in close matches and crossing the line. On the other hand, India have been not tested. Will India cross the line if they face such situations? What nature has to say is also there to look for.

Posted by Harmony111 on (April 4, 2014, 12:34 GMT)

In a T20 match there are no favorites, as we saw recently in Eng vs Netherland & SA vs Netherland. And when it is India vs SA, the gap is practically zero. Ind have some players who can win or turn the match on their own, so does SA. Players like Yuvi, Kohli, Dhoni, ABD, Amla, Steyn can produce something splendid and win it. Anyone who thinks that he knows who will win today doesn't know the game at all.

Ind def have the better spinner(s) & the wicket seems to help them. OTOH, dew can make the spinners like lambs in the slaughterhouse. So what is your strength could become your greatest weakness.

SA have Steyn but honestly, the other bowlers haven't been impressive. Tahir may not trouble Indians much. This I think could be their weakness. SA def have the batting to counter or go one up on India but they seem a bit weak in bowling. But still, India don't have a Steyn.

Ind batting 2nd means the help of dew, it also means the pressure of chasing.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:31 GMT)

Anyone who writes off SA at this stage is probably living under a rock. SA, with all their history, their "meh" performances in the Super-10s and their ever changing team unit, is still a formidable force for India to overcome. As an Indian fan, seeing SA having a batting line-up containing de Kock, Amla, ABDV, Faf, and Duminy, I would be scared (esp. ABDV - he is magical), and with a bowling line-up containing Steyn (who can destroy the opponent single-handedly), Parnell and Tahir (perfect for Dhaka pitches), I would be quivering in my boots. I can't help but think that SA is playing like India in WC 2011 (scratchy in the beginning, but winning the right moments), and India like SL in WC 2011 (won everything by a long mile, but messed up the final). I hope I am wrong here, and India win. I get the feeling it will be a cracker of a match.

Posted by subratachakrabarty on (April 4, 2014, 12:28 GMT)

Any team batting first and posing a total of 160+ will have an advantage. Also, as rightly pointed out by skipper of Proteas, there is hell lot of difference in the pitch condition of Dhaka as compared to Chittagong. Here again, Indians are having advantage for obvious reasons, although it has been a general perception that the conditions of pitch doesn't really matters when it comes to T20Is. However, I have my reasons to believe that T20Is are no more the display platform for batsmen. Bowlers have chipped in and they chipped in fast and furious. This edition of T20WC has been a bowlers show and we have witnessed some tremendous turn and spin and bounce. So, watch out for this semi will be remembered for a long time to come and I hope that the best team wins.

india wll lose..poor india

Posted by wapuser on (April 4, 2014, 12:20 GMT)

@indiancoolguy: too good analysis and very true.. Sure hope it happens that way. Cup is India's any how.. Bat first or chase. End of analysis

Posted by subratachakrabarty on (April 4, 2014, 12:20 GMT)

Many things will depend on the first 6 overs of the play for the team batting first. SA has been impressive with scores like 51, 47, 63 & 62. Indians, on the other hand, have displayed temperament for big games. MSD will be very careful and toss will be ultra-crucial in this match. Hell lot of pressure on Shikhar Dhawan, as he failed to transform initial starts into biggies. It will be a good way to make a comeback not only to the team, but also to his form. I suspect, it will be a bowlers game once again. For SA, crucial players will be Tahir, Dale in bowling dept. and ABD, Amla in batting. Likewise, it will be interesting to see MSD's choice b/w Shami and Mohit Sharma. A lot will depend on how Kumar bowls today and offcourse not to forget, mighty Mishra. Yuvi also have to prove if he is one-match wonder boy or he really returned to form. I expect fireworks from Kohli as well. Its gonna be one hell of a match.

India full of confidence with consecutive wins will surely beat South Africa to enter in the final.

@ Slinga_Malinga Funny to see my fellow Sl fans getting nervous. Maybe they know IND will take the cup like they took our No. 1 ranking, like they took 2011 WC, like they took CT, WI final......

@Slinga_Malinga . didnt astrology tell you who will win the toss?

All the best SA. Play hard you can beat india..

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 12:01 GMT)

Since 1992 I have been watching our team fail in most world cup compos. The only joys we really had were a Champions Trophy and the recent under 19 WC. So we are a bit cynical especially when its a semi and I certainly dont think India will be a walkover if we do win. The one thing that strangely gives me some hope is that we have been underdogs throughout this WC, whereas in all others we were among the favorites. That may relieve pressure enough to allow the players to just focus on the game.

Posted by wapuser on (April 4, 2014, 12:00 GMT)

India will won the toss SA-140/7 IND-141/5 in 19.4 overs Man of the Match-S.Raina-56runs Best Bowler-R Ashwin-16/3

Posted by stone-mason on (April 4, 2014, 11:57 GMT)

Yup, we SAFFAS have been erratic, but I think this makes for interesting viewing and competition. As the article expresses, that this has been the way we use to roll, playing everyone of the park in most tournaments, then we fail at the telling end of the tourny. However this timea round, we battled getting here, maybe its the omen we needed and perhaps having Quinton, David and Albie coming good with more consistency from Hash, Ab and JP. Come on Boys, go into this one battle hardened. As for MS and co, best off luck, you really have been playing well thus far, here's hoping SA stops the Indian Juggernaut. Play Ball Gentlemen.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:56 GMT)

Abraham Benjamin De Villiers is indeed a threat but he comes way down the order and if picks his wicket early than good bye SA.. India's gonna win this anyway..

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 4, 2014, 11:55 GMT)

@ Slinga_Malinga: Semi final : India vs SA If India bats first - scores 190. and SA scores 110, India wins by 80 runs If India bats second- SA scores 120, and India chases down within 17 overs.

Final:- If India bats first - scores 250/2. SL all out at 80 runs in 18 overs. if India bats second - SL scores 99/9, and India chases down in 11.2 overs with 9 wickets in hand.

Trophy winner - India SL - keeps the track good - that is losing in finals .

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:53 GMT)

Do all you people forget that SA more often than not collapses in "must win" games? Also India is the ONLY undefeated team all tournament. It'll be a close one but India will pull through. They're a force to be reckoned with this tournament

Posted by rajcl on (April 4, 2014, 11:53 GMT)

best of luck for both teams , dont bother about result lets play good cricket ,,from INDIAN

How's the waether in Dhaka? Shall anybody kindly inform us?

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 4, 2014, 11:47 GMT)

@Rak Esh: Here the batsmen hit boundaries over keepers head(called dil-scoop), & flips the bat reverse side and sweep (called reverse sweep) and you are talking about negative bowling ? Where have you come from dear ?

Did you see Maxwell batting? or Malinga's bowling action ?

T20 is all about hitting boundaries no matter how you hit, and stopping runs no matter how you bowl.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:47 GMT)

It's either India or SA I want to see winning this World Cup! Not SL, definitely not. It would be different to see SA lifting an ICC trophy at least once in my lifetime. Hope they do it this time. Best of luck Proteas. I know, my team doesn't need luck to win this! :)

Posted by JAHID_OMAR on (April 4, 2014, 11:44 GMT)

Come on SA.. All the people in BD, PAK & SL are praying for your Victory..

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:43 GMT)

Hoping for a fantastic match.. and india to move in the finals and again stun sri lanka there. ..

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:41 GMT)

Hi I think Sa can win today, because this year SA U 19 team won wc, so I am predicting Sa luck might have changed they can lift the WC

Posted by JAHID_OMAR on (April 4, 2014, 11:36 GMT)

Score Card- If India bats first - they will score somewhere between 130-140. And SA will chase that with in 18 overs. If SA bat first they will score 170+ and india will loose the match by 40-50 runs. Best bowler Steyn will pick up 4 wickets and AB will score more than 70 runs in this match. Kohli will will not score more than 10 runs today. This is as per the Astrology.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:29 GMT)

@hail_sarcasm I am sure you have predicted for SA last Semifinals too

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:28 GMT)

for heavens sake don't call Ashwin a world class bowler. this guy bowls right arm off spin from around the wicket and pitches on leg stump always. for people who play the game will know that it's the negative line of bowling, which bowlers use in test matches. SICK

All the best for South Africa... You can win against India

Posted by Coolcapricorn on (April 4, 2014, 11:22 GMT)

Just like both the Windies teams [men & women) lost yesterday in the semis, let's hope as an Indian fan that it is the same with the South Africans today! Really nice to see the best wishes rec'd from fans from other countries - thank you!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:20 GMT)

A lot will depend on the toss. The wicket has proven to be a difficult one to chase, with the last few games having very low scores in second innings. With the weather forecast, the team batting second will need to stay ahead of the DL score at all times adding additional pressure.

Posted by hail_sarcasm on (April 4, 2014, 11:07 GMT)

As per astrology, it will be SA Vs SL final in which SA will win. last 3 preditions were right, lets c what happens today. It is so unfair to SA if the match is not played. It should not be like this in big tournaments. If we have rain curtail match, SA has more chance of winning. Let the best team win in 40 over game.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:06 GMT)

I am so eagerly awaiting my favourite bowler Steyn against the favourite batsman Kohli....whereas one is a champion bowler and on way to an all time great bowler in the history (as was my all time fav Donald :)...the other the ever so talented, young and flamboyant Kohli...who by far is the best young batsman in the world on the way he has gone about his cricket in the last couple of years....I feel the fate of the two teams will much depend on who gets the better of this

Posted by THEBEAST7 on (April 4, 2014, 11:05 GMT)

Iv got a feeling that dhawan will click today if Morne Morkle doesn't play!!!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:03 GMT)

i can't believe that Phangiso even comes into the picture...My guess is they will choose him and he will go for 30 in 2 overs.....He will be the difference between the 2 sides and perhaps one of SA top 6 scoring at a strike rate of 70 and using up too many balls. Its OK to score at a strike rate of 70 provided you go out under 7 balls...

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:02 GMT)

Let's not get into conclusions just yet. After all the match hasn't even started yet. The game can turn on its head by just one over so let's wish both teams good luck and may the best team qualify without any interruptions due to rain...

Posted by dr0nachar7a on (April 4, 2014, 10:46 GMT)

This tourney has brought T20 into the limelight like never before ! Good cricket has won more matches than not and the teams coming into the semis are widely accepted to be the best on offer. In fact, these are the best teams on offer, no matter the format ! These are proper cricketing cricketers, not sloggers and not one day or T20 specialists. This tournament has been a fantastic advt for cricket and I dearly wish more such tourneys could be conducted amongst the associates. Places like SG where i stay would love to be able to participate even if only in the playoffs

Posted by idealeyeflash on (April 4, 2014, 10:45 GMT)

Dhawan will get out in first 5 balls . its a bet

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 10:45 GMT)

It will be a safe bet to bet on India but this where the unpredictability of this format will make it interesting. SA have to get their game plan right. Mishra is in form so just nudge him around and try and get 20 off him without giving a wicket. I repeat without giving a wicket and no slogging against him. Faf has to stand up today and lead from the front. Most importantly, with his batting coz he would have played Ashwin and jadeja a lot in the nets too.

Posted by idealeyeflash on (April 4, 2014, 10:42 GMT)

The best team in the tournament is so far south africa because they have consistent performance and i do now know why they crumble in finals but this time looking positive approach as well as south africa is concerned. India would have a 2nd time toughest contest in the tournament 1st against Pakistan and now south Africa.

Well my best wishes with south africa.. Go south africa goo and take this world cup to your country.. ur country deserves and need more than any other.. AMLA may ALLAH bless ur with the WIN INSHALLAH

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 10:09 GMT)

My biggest concern as a Safa is they will change what worked against England. Yes it is a slow & turns but this is offset by the fact that India play spin better than most whereas they are not that comfortable with the quicks. Phangiso has not play a 20/20 for a long time now and could be manor from heaven for the Indians. In my humble opinion Morne Morkel is the man despite his tournament so far. Kallis oh Kallis could you not have waited a few months befor calling it a day????

Posted by THEBEAST7 on (April 4, 2014, 10:01 GMT)

Guys lets not worry about what will happen in the final. Lets enjoy the moment and support who you like. Saffers has a golden opportunity to get in to their first ever final of a World Cup. India has a better bowling line up. Hope Saffers will not fold like the Aussies did. Hoping to see a cracker of a match tonight.

Posted by Sal12345 on (April 4, 2014, 10:00 GMT)

India: People are talking about only kholi.. but india doesn't wants 70 0r 80 runs from one player. +ve of kholi is rotating strike which means he gives options to other side player to be in touch with the game. (it is the biggest asset for a team) so others can also hit when it needs. It is not easy to take wickets the likes of rohit, rahane, yuvi, dhoni, raina cheaply.Becoz all of them play well against spin. Indians played well in this series because moving the scoreboard sensibly by making 1's and 2's against spinners which is risk free and efficient. Steyn factor is for death overs may be a worry if dhoni is not hitting him. As for as bowling is concern, Ashwin is back in form at right time. Mishra's Leg break VS SA team (interesting to watch). Bhuvi is bowling consistenly on right areas and if mohit sharma plays, then SA finds no pace for the match to hit easily so they have to improvise the shots regularly to make the score board tick on.

Posted by Ozcricketwriter on (April 4, 2014, 9:53 GMT)

The roles might be reversed but India don't usually choke in semi finals - as said in this article they have never lost a world semi final, while South Africa have only won 1 in 10 tries - and that was a Champions Trophy. But T20 is a fickle game and it would not be absurd to think that South Africa could win this. They have won the hard fought games, and have had to fight for every little thing that they have got - the mark of true champions - while India, in comparison, have had it all their own way - the mark of a team about to fall over. My heart therefor says South Africa. But that is if it is close. There is every chance that India will just steamroll through to a final against their most common opponents - Sri Lanka - the match up that cricket fans around the world roll their eyes in disappointment about, due to just how often they play each other.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 9:36 GMT)

I don't know why lankan fans are shouting here madly that they can beat india easily look at recent performences WC 2011 FINAL/TRI SERIES FINAL/CHAMPIONS TROPHY SEMIFINAL and match in hobart were kohli torn ur boling apart and whon a 300+ chase in 35 overs. to be honest india is the way better than lanka and if it is the final between india and srilanka then it is going to be the fifth final loss match for lanka.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 9:29 GMT)

All the best Team India.. Just play your normal game and definitely we will win this Trophy.. CHAK DE INDIA !!!

When India and South Africa played with each other we were the witness of a great game of cricket.

Till Now They Played 7 T20 with each other. 1. India Won By 6 wicket with 1 ball remaining ( a close win) 2. India Won by 37 Run (This is the most smooth win by any team) 3. SA Won by 12 Run 4. India Won by 14 Run 5. India Won by 21 Run' 6. SA Won by 11 Run 7. India Won by 1 Run (A very close match)

After analyzing the previous encounters between these two great teams, I am expecting a great match today evening, Who ever win Just rain should not spoil the game.

Best Of Luck to Men In Blue.......

Though Morne Morkel did not have great outing so far but I think still he should be preferred ahead of Phangiso and Hendricks. He has ability to trouble Indian batsmen with his pace and bounce and he has done that successfully in past too.

I think SA will win the match today.

Posted by luckyias on (April 4, 2014, 8:10 GMT)

90% percent think and saying as this is a really easy match for india. Because SA is not in a good form and packed constant team. Look at the SA perfomance last year in short format in cricket with india. 2-0 win by SA. and also test win by 1-0. Nothing for india in that series. That series indian team was this team without any change. But SA have done two three changes. That is alby morkal and fab du plessis. How ever these two teams have played 7 matches face to face. 5 for india and 2 for SA. but this SA team is very tough and when pick one by one from this players they have higher records than indians. Any how indian team have played wonderful cricket in this tournament. So I have say this isn't a easy for indians as my indians fans thinks.

Posted by gsss on (April 4, 2014, 7:55 GMT)

So many second thoughts are not required for this remaining 2 matches. Having only strong batting line up, Dhoni won the world cup 2011. Now team is compeltely balanced with both batting and bowling. Anyone would think, will he lose this cup?

Posted by 504429641 on (April 4, 2014, 7:43 GMT)

If Men's team and Women's team of a country, both play semifinals on same day, then both will loose. As happened to West Indies yesterday, it will happen to SA today :). Also the oppositions are strong: India (on current T20 form) and Eng Women. All the best to India today and in the final against SL.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 7:41 GMT)

In-form Imran Tahir is as dangerous as in-fomrm Ashwin/Mishra. See his averages and economy rate in First-class/List A/T20's/ODI's/Twenty20's. They are outstanding. He has loads of experience as well. He has played most of his first-class matches in Pakistan who are good players of Spin.

India be aware of him. Though I am confident India can face him well. I think any show-up of negligence, Care free attitude against him might lead to debacle.

Odd to schedule a tournament like this in a country that has a 'rainy season' that coincides with the tournament dates. Ok, weather can never be predicted, but this one is almost metronomic. Happened last year in Sri Lanka too. Needs some thought.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 6:48 GMT)

I beleive that India will win this match. Weather will be the key. If match is washed out, India will proceed to final.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 6:47 GMT)

No please not Hendricks or Phangiso. Then rather bring back Tsotsobe who knows how to come back. We have experience of Tsotsobe's quality in the big match - the other two have never proven that. Wish Philander was there - big mistake not bringing him along. What everyone should consider is that T20 is a lottery. Even a 15-minute wind storm can win the game, or a lucky 6, or 1 umpire error, against such top teams. Therefore all the prematch analysis and the eventual result mean absolutely nothing. But at least play the best available team, and Hendricks and Phangiso ain't it. Maybe Phangiso has a shout because of the pitch, but Hendricks has nothing at all.

Im not feeling optimistic as a Saffa looking at the weather forecast for tonight's game. I hope they can get the minimum overs in to get a result. In the event no ball gets bowled it will be in India's favour and yet another misfortune will hit SA on their way to potential silverware.

Posted by Snambidi on (April 4, 2014, 6:21 GMT)

I had not finished my postings. But time & number of letters allotted got exhausted. The fast bowler of India Shami& above all the Best all rounder of Indian Team Yuvraj can bowl & take wickets sometimes. In view of these facts,India should do well.to day. The biggest encounter in this match between bat & ball could perhaps be the Best until now. The entire fun would disappear like mist in the sun if there is any rains& Storm tonight. Let us hope for the best

Posted by niazbhi on (April 4, 2014, 6:16 GMT)

SA should have Kyle Abbott in the team. He could start the bowling with JP bowling one or two, then Steyn for a couple. Tahir in the middle Hendricks or/and Parnell at the end. Against Misra abd Ashwin they need time to settle down and Kumar is not going give away too many. To win SA need to restrict india within 150. Tahir may not be as effective against india. If Kumar is so economial at the start, why not Kyle Abbott.. His list A economy is better than almost all others in the team.

Posted by Snambidi on (April 4, 2014, 6:10 GMT)

The statistics of 5 to 2 in 7 matches head to head& the comments from commentators in the video in Cricinfo clearly indicates an edge for India over SA. BUT NEVERTHELESS SA IS NOTBA TEAM TO UNDERESTIMATE. They have great players like de Villiers,,Amla,Dumini,De Kock ,Duplesis. Whennthey visited India recently for playing One dayers ,their new Wicket Keeper deKock was playing Great cricket throuout his stay in India in every match. If the take out similar form in T20 also tonight then stopping them would turn out to because Herculian Task. Besides everything else they have Steyn the best fastbbowler inthevWorld today. But thevonly consolation is that if all of them cometo great form then they. Won't have enough overs left to play in just 20 overs.

India too is not a bad outfit.players like,Yuvraj,Kohli,Sharma,& suresh Raina besides their great Captain Dhoni, the batting Depart ment is well organised. Apart fro every oneelse ,Ravindran Jadeja is a big asset.so areAswin,Mishra,& Mohit.

Posted by India_boy on (April 4, 2014, 6:09 GMT)

Steyn....he's going to be the match maker or breaker for SA. If India handles Steyn as well as they handle Malinga or Gul, SA will be down and out since they tend to feed on his energy and fiery attitude.Whereas, If Steyn goes boom in the beginning, it will put a lot of pressure on the Indian middle order and a score of 120-125 is on the cards. Anyways, best of luck to both the teams who have so far looked the most solid in this tournament. As for SA, this is their best chance to win a WC, if they win here, beating SL in a final is never difficult.

Posted by JimmySA on (April 4, 2014, 5:57 GMT)

Realistically I think India will win. If SA win it will be an upset but that being said it always just takes 1 or 2 players to perform like never before to stir things around but sense we going to have many problems against spin bowling.

Sri Lankans are waiting for India to make it to the finals. After all it's all about the best two teams in the world right now. Here's my Gut feeling about this game. well everyone underestimating South Africa, and bullying and tagging them as Chokers. Well that would give them extra motivation to change all of those critics against them. i have a feeling that SA might pull off a victory today.

Well weather forecast say it will be raining today as it was yesterday, so team that would batted 2nd will favored much, as they know exactly what kind of position they would be in when in a particular time when rain fall.

Dilshan' innings was not superlative but his fielding was! The fielding really gave the Lankans the cutting edge.India will have to raise its fielding to win a game which will probably going to be a close encounter.

SA's only semi final win in ICC events came way back in 1998 CT... coincidently India's last semi final loss also came in the same tournament... 16 years since then India has never lost a semi final and SA has never won a semi final... this will definitely put pressure on South Africans... India played all their matches in Dhaka... They know the conditions here... Even if it rains also India goes to the Finals... History, Stats, Form, Condition and climate... all favouring India... Advantage India...

For those commenting on India's bowling attack being weak, please refrain from making such empty statements. Look at the NOW and not the OVERALL YEAR. As of right now, in the tournament, they have been very effective in getting wickets while choking the run-rate. Yes their bowling attack might be considered mediocre based on the performance prior to this, but as of now, Mishra and Ashwin are grinding their opposition down. This is not to say that Steyn along with the tremendous batting line-up. May the best team win!

Posted by Herath-UK on (April 4, 2014, 4:53 GMT)

Sri Lanka will love to meet india in the final & beat them of course. We avenged our defeat to WI in the last final by packing them off. There was a lot of WI fire power, fans talked of but Sri Lanka handled them brilliantly where the Aussies & Paks failed. Where were those cracking innings Gayle or Bravo or Samuels are known of? fizzled out in front of fine bowling. Though they failed with the bat the input from Sanga & Mahela immeasurable. Well Sri Lanka Lions are there & awaiting & let's look for a thrilling final.

Good luck SA. We don't need any more Ind-SL matches. Lankans prefer from their hearts to face relatively easier openents in India in the finals as they have beaten India comprehensively in the last 2 matches between 2 teams. But,from their brains, they would like SA to come for the finals. Because they have been the worthy oponents for Lankans. Even they gave a tough time in the previous match with Lankans.

Posted by pandian_ikku on (April 4, 2014, 4:41 GMT)

All Sri Lankan fans prefer if India proceed to Final. When it comes to T20, India is a weak team compare to South Africa. But unfortunately the chances for Indians to win against South Africa is less than 20%. South Africa is too strong for Indians.

Even if they proceed to Final the chances they win against Sri Lanka is less than 10%. If South Africa proceed we'll be able to see a very good competition.

How ever we wish all the best for our neighbours to win the game. But looking at this quality T20 side of South Africa I am afraid that we will have to play the final with them.

Posted by Raginggbull on (April 4, 2014, 4:41 GMT)

This match is real fit for a high voltage semifinal. Both teams knew each other strength, better to play out Steyn and pick others. Steyn should be taken to runs only if he is bit out of sorts. Indian strength is bowling here and Safas are known to how they handle spin/big match. India just have to do execute their traditional strengths - incisive spin and common-sense batting to win this match. Good luck to both teams.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 4:37 GMT)

I think more than winning the point is who should not lose... like in two games of SA, rather than SA winning the other team lost a match they shouldnt have. I honestly think India wont lose match from the position NZ lost. Cant wait to c match.

India must win today's game. They gave us so much hope in this tournament. Now they can not quit and break fans hearts. If they do I will burn down Dhonis' house(Just Kidding).

South Africa is nothing compare to mighty Indians. I guess this would be mostly one sided match. Our bowling attack became the best T20 bowling attack in the world. Batting had been always good. Sorry South Africans. Pack your bags to catch the next plane tomorrow.

Next Sri Lanka get ready to thrashed rudely from Indians once again! Mark my words.

Luck may favour, one game. But how come for four games that too one sided matches. May be SA came through luck by winning nedherlands by 5 runs (almost they lost). But However, its SA or SL or WI, doesn't matter for India. They have habit called 'Winning'.

Posted by gsss on (April 4, 2014, 4:16 GMT)

May steyn, AB, Tahir or even 11 of them threats, But, the one man who stands behind the stumps will be the only massive threat for SA, that is Dhoni. Once his plans start and gets going on, may be SA get all out under 100 and again it will be one sided match for India as it is happening in this tournament so far. It seems very difficult for SA against MSD and his team. Congo Team India!!!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 4:11 GMT)

I think it will be a close contest because in SA players like Amla, AB, Faf play spin well though steyn is a world class bowler he can be wounded I think its time for Rohit to give back steyn as what he did when Ind were in SA earlier and still hold a little edge psychologically.

I think India easily win this match. Imran Tahir would be the most expensive in this particular match. No doubt SA is the most weakest from all semifinal qualifier at Bangladesh condition. All d best india.

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 4, 2014, 2:17 GMT)

SL knows very well that they are going to loose the trophy of India reaches to final because they are master chokers and that's the reason why they are supporting SA and crying on what happens if rain washes out the total match.

I can understand SL problem very well. They think SA as better chokers than them, so feel so much comfortable for SL if SA comes to final. LOL.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 1:54 GMT)

I think Dale Steyn Will blow india away from the tournament. AB, Faf, Duminy , Miller , de kock, will get them to a good score. We saw what de kock did to India last year. This is the first time India face a real challenge in this tournament. So far they had easy opponents. Sri lanka beat them in the warm up match. most probably it will be an one-sided match.

Posted by maddy20 on (April 4, 2014, 1:20 GMT)

Regardless of the how much the Saffa fans on this thread, and downplay any potential defeat and harp about their record in tests, the chokers tag will follow SA wherever it goes unless they win a World cup. They may brag about their test ranking, but India too was at the top of the test rankings for over 2 years(2 years 4 months to be precise). One more series loss and the Saffas no.1 tag will go to Australia too and then they will have nothing to brag about!

Posted by Albert_cambell on (April 4, 2014, 1:10 GMT)

I do think Phangiso will be a good addition to the team. The spinners are really enjoying these slow BD wickets. May be replace him with Hendricks. Indian players are not that great spin as everyone suggest. They struggled against Swan and Monty in India and few weeks ago they struggled against PAK, SL spinners in the Asia cup.

Posted by Albert_cambell on (April 4, 2014, 1:02 GMT)

In the past we dint have the luck in Major tournaments. But this time we have the luck as we are facing an easy opponent like India. We will win it this time. No need to worry about Indian spinners. AMLA,AB ,FAF can play spin very well. 1st of all Indian bowlers should think about getting De kock out 1st. He thrashed their bowlers all over the park in SA.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 0:37 GMT)

Yesterday's SL-WI match has a major lesson for India.

Gayles' form (not only his batting, running, & fielding) gives me a real scare about Yuvi doing a Gayle for India. Yuvi, like Gayle, is nowhere near his "usual form". I have the fear that both are in the beginning of their end. Both had been great players, winners & great entertainers. Hope and wish I am proved wrong.

Against the current 'disarray' of SA, India may get away with the "Yuvi rehabilitation project". Srilanka with the variety of attack at their command will be a different proposition.

Posted by kriketeer on (April 4, 2014, 0:37 GMT)

The Indian team has not been stretched till now... but one way of seeing it is they didnt allow it ... wow.. against teams like PAK, WI and AUS is incredible... SA is a good team and has come out of pressure situations .. I would rate them above india to qualify for final.. But they have proved as Chokers many a time... That's the only advantage India has for the semi-final

Big fan here in USA. Match starts at 9:30am local time. I will be at work and not home until the evening. Should I keep an eye on the match at work and then watch the full match at home knowing the result? Or should I just watch the whole match in the evening without knowing the result? What do you think?

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 23:30 GMT)

Indians do not have quality bowlers to defend. Ashwin is a nothing compared to good spinners going around. Kohli is the only batsmen with class others ride on their luck in a given day. so Indians do not deserved to be in the finals compared to the standards SAns produce. Its the luck that always runs with India and Dhoni. hope this will be published. SA vs SL final - great for spirit of cricket

Posted by Kavum on (April 3, 2014, 23:09 GMT)

T20 WC Semi. Backing SAf since they are a team of incredible talent led by that wonderful batting magician ABDV - a legend in the making. No one since Sanath Jayasuriya, Warne, Murali and KP have captured the imagination like him. Sachin, Javed, Imran, Flintoff and Botham to say nothing of Sir Viv had that same star power. FDP, Steyn and Amla are good, solid cricketers but do not have that same Harry Potter quality about them. I wish both teams well but have a small vuvuzela that I will be blowing for the Proteas.

Posted by JustIPL on (April 3, 2014, 22:53 GMT)

Out of the three remaining teams in contention, only SL have played extensively in all conditions of Bangladesh. So far, india have not faced dew and took full advantage of spin bowling while SA faced dew in CHG but still emerged on top. Imran Tahir should be more lethal now but indian spin is heavier than SA on paper at least. SA pacers will have a great challenge to compensate for lack spin bowlers in SA side. SA batsmen also have great test to counter indian spinners at their home. On the other hand india area still unsure of their best side so SA have to be guessing who will they be facing. In short, SA batsmen will have to do another jail break against india spin bowling to win this and then there will be the next spin test against SL. If SL/Ind make the finals then indian batting is better than SL batting unless SL chip in. Indian spin attack will also be slightly better than SL. So, both SA & SL have a great hurdle in the form of indians.

The Big Picture It's a world-tournament semi-final. we can all as humans be bewildered by the notions of our inner beings, in any game there is a win and a lose. One team has to win and the other has to lose, now that depends what our senses predict with all that we have seen in these 2 weeks makes us vulnerable. For instance today's match, no one knew that rain would be a spoilt sport, the Lankans won with God's Grace certainly they all prayed very hard both the team and the fans, the team in the dressing room that "please God make us win this semi final as we are weak, we always faulter when it comes to semi's or finals and the fans in the stadium. Now looking at tomorrow's match, my predictions are that India & Srilanka will play the finals. My sympathy with SA as they will be very nervous tomorrow, mind games will be used to force. Mind you Indian's there is a bad weather forecast unexpectedly predicted as well so try to be above par in the D/L method if batting second. Good Luck MS

I see Indian fans are really loud in here. India team is really strong on flat pitches but South Africa proved to be strong in any pitches and can match India on flat pitches. South Africa are their own enemies when it comes to k/o but this time the scenerio is slightly different. Lets hope for a nail biting game and keep the talkings for later. May the better team win. As a Souh Africa fan all i m gonna say, "let the game begin"!

Although Dhoni has been lucky at winning tosses, the rules should be changed to make it more balanced i.e.

For each team pair, they can start with the toss first time and then toggle between the two teams instead of depending on luck.

Moreover, for all semi-finals and finals there should ad advantage for the team with higher points/match i.e. number 1 should be the toss winner in each semi final and team with higher points/match should be the toss winner in finals.

Posted by vish.nadiadi on (April 3, 2014, 20:17 GMT)

India should go with Rahane as his technique would be useful in seeing off first few overs of Steyn. This time around though however our batsmen will have to step-up and score around 170 if we are to win this game. May the best team win. T20 is more like a strategic format where captain has to have good skills and this is very Dhoni can have a slighter advantage!

As much as I want South Africa to win a big tournament someday, I think it's just fair to say that India deserve to be in the finals. I am an Indian, but I am a cricket lover as well. India has roared and mauled the opponents in each game. They have a great balance in their team, plus the Asian conditions suit their game. South Africa would have to produce something special to go past India. I believe South Africa are missing 1 more spinner. Every team has at least 2 to 3 spinners. India should capitalize on this weakness. And except a solitaire game from AB and Duminy, nobody has shown authority in batting. Steyn remains the biggest threat in the bowling department for India. Hope India keeps their roaring and mauling session through the end of the tournament. With rain forecast, things can get very interesting. Hope to see some excellent cricket tomorrow. Good luck India!

South Africa is going to win the cup. they always play good and have bad luck. no one deserves the cup more than them. Sri Lanka has been having bad lucks in final too. but at least they have won a world cup at-least. that being said i am very impressed with Indian team in this tournament. they are playing good cricket with bat and ball

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 19:51 GMT)

let's hope for a great game of cricket tomorrow to decide the finalist rather than the weather...India to win hopefully. To all of you malcontents out there, yes it's really important to see your side win but it's just a game of cricket so let's enjoy or agonise over the performance and results and then be gracious whatever the outcome. Go Indiaaah

Go India Go !! Time for some retribution... We will clinch the T20 title the same way we did World Cup !! HistoryRepeats !!

Posted by whatacricketer on (April 3, 2014, 19:23 GMT)

India playing good against fast bowling and SA playing good against spin at this moment.. both teams have some in form players....pretty much 50/50... It all comes down to who gets 10 overs to bat Kohli or AB !!...

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 19:13 GMT)

Once again opening partnership is going to be crutial for India. I am sure Dhoni will stick only with regular & set opening pair of Rohit & Shikhar. Though Shikhar has not scored much so far, like UV he can come in form at any time. The main & the biggest problem for India is arised after todays SL/WI match. If Dhoni win toss what he will choose now ? D/L method is likely to play mejor role in the tournament. Just take example of todays match. Though at the time of rain SL were ahead, WI were cool enough as Samy & Russel yet to play. But sudden rain took match away from WI. D/L methid is more dangerous to the team batting second. Now what will Dhoni do if India win the toss. This semifinal match is just like any final match. SA are comparitively familer to Ashivin, Mishra & Jadeja as AB, Faf, Duminy all played against them before in simillar conditions. So I think spinners will not be the mejor issue for SA. In fact Indian batting has more bigger chalkange to face Steyn & Co. ATB India

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 19:10 GMT)

I feel the chances of winning the match for India and SA are 40 and 60 respectively.

Indian batting revolves around Kohli while SA bowling revolves around Steyn and Tahir. India bowling revolves around Ashwin and Mishra while SA batting revolves around AB Devillers, Amla and Duminy.

The winning chances lie in these players. Rest of players are just like supporting actors.

Duminy, Amla, Tahir, Steyn are in good form. Kohli, Nohit,Ashwin and Mishra are in good form. AB Devillers definitely has good chance of firing against Indian bowling as he is good player of spin. I don't see many good players in this team against Steyn barring Kohli. These are going to be the deciding factors.

All he best India.. I wish my prediction goes wrong.

"India have never lost a semi-final under Dhoni"......"India have played like South Africa usually do, probably their smoothest world tournament ever, but they also have the experience of going further: they are the current holders of the World Cup and Champions Trophy, and are gunning for this to complete the set".....these sentences sum up the entire story of this T20 WC and India's performance.....India has clear chance of 70:30....ATB for both teams

Posted by JChandi on (April 3, 2014, 18:40 GMT)

SL showed their brain power and fire power to those who have not seen, WI might have hit few 6s, still SL would have won it easily anyway,.looking forward to see AB deStorm. Good luck to both teams tomorrow!

i think better team should have to win, waiting for a good game till the last ball,, on paper i think india have a good side in batting and as well in spin department, with a great captancy of MS Dhoni

Posted by anupkeni on (April 3, 2014, 18:28 GMT)

Team India automatically qualify for the finals if this semi-final against South Africa is washed out. Team India is 1st in group 2 with 4 wins out of 4 matches while South Africa is 2nd in group 1 with 3 wins and 1 loss out of 4 matches.

Posted by Abhi_missingsachin on (April 3, 2014, 18:20 GMT)

I guess this is going to be another game which is going to be dominated by the spinners. Well all this provided the storm stays away.

Wish to have a full un-interrupted match tomorrow...cuz what happened today was really a shame though Sri Lanka were deservingly declared winners but the way things ended was a real shame...

Come on SA. Give the confident India a good thrashing. It's SA's turn this time guys. Go De Kock.

Its been raining heavily atm at Dhaka for WI v SL, if it rains tomorrow and is washed out what happens? Do India go through becuase they had most points in group stage?

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:49 GMT)

India qualify if there's a washout?? That would be very unfair! In a cup its never about which team tops a league, its about who plays better on the day... I hope it rains so the spinners can't grip and S.A. batsmen hit 220!

Posted by thozar on (April 3, 2014, 17:40 GMT)

India have been the best team, by some distance, in this WT20. If any team deserves to win this, it is India. We could only hope that some justice is served after our unlucky run this winter where we lost in RSA, NZL, and also the Asia cup. I think this game is like a final in the sense that if we win, we will be the world champions. If RSA win, SRL will be the world champions. How great it would be to be the defending ODI world champion, champions trophy champion, and the WT20 champion. chak de India.

Posted by msdhoni123 on (April 3, 2014, 17:39 GMT)

The only reason India have more cups under dhoni than ganguly is not cos of the talent. Players ganguly had was way more skilled than dhoni's boys. But ganguly boy's used to choke under pressure this is where dhoni's boys cash in. In the Wc 2007 Wc 2011 and champions trophy we were all under pressure but we overcame that pressure cos the younger players are so used to tight games from ipl and that. im not degrading ganguly at all. im talking about the evolution of indian cricket. Go india bleed blue. im so glad i got work otherwise whenever i watch indian loose.:(

Posted by caldruid on (April 3, 2014, 17:30 GMT)

It's going to be a tough match for India. Steyn is hard to handle on any ground and Tahir is doing better with every game. SA batting is more stronger than Ind. If Indian spinners dont come good, the game will tilt SA's way.

Posted by Smahajan on (April 3, 2014, 17:20 GMT)

Last 5 matches. Bat first get a decent score 130-160 and that's game, set and match. Don't see it happening any different tomorrow. Should have been day matches these knockout ones.

Posted by Lakpj on (April 3, 2014, 17:14 GMT)

Given the form and the conditions India looks the favorites on paper. But I have a feeling that an AB or a Steyn special could be awaiting them. Good luck to both teams.

West Indies will be very disappointed with themselves. Sammy was itching to go out but didnt face a ball. I think they forgot about D/L. Samuels was hero that day long time ago - but now he's the zero...But I guess it's more the top order's fault. They should have known! They waited till the last five to start hammering the ball..but what pity...that was exactly when the hail came in.

@wapuser It's more weird than that - it even started pouring here in Colombo some seconds before it started in Mirpur. And now it is all gone! :)

Posted by USA_Raj on (April 3, 2014, 17:10 GMT)

Would like to make a case for Rahane to open with Rohit Sharma. Rahane is a better fielder than Shikhar Dhawan. He makes all catches and more importantly in T20 format, has been known to get direct hits for run-outs. While Rahane does not have the strike rate of Dhawan, he can rotate strike and keep one end going. India should ask Rohit to go for his natural strokes and push the strike rate while Rahane rotates strike. If Rohit goes for a quick-fire 20 to 30 runs, Kohli can come in and continue to attack. Rahane can help lay a strong foundation for India in the first 8 to 10 overs and then allow the big hitters like Yuvi, Raina, Dhoni and Jadeja to put up a big score (if batting first) or chase down anything that SA puts up. Should be a fun match and hopefully the weather gods will keep the rain away! My prediction - India beats SA in a thriller.

Posted by mzm149 on (April 3, 2014, 17:02 GMT)

@TommytuckerSaffa: Best of luck South Africa. I hope AB and co. make plenty of runs and Steyn and co. choke Indian batsmen. I want South Africa to beat Sri Lanka in finals and win the cup.

In these conditions and form its appears to be a monster task for SA. If anything Inda could be caught napping after hardly beaking in to a sweat in reacing the semis'. They have all bases covers with 3 quality spinners backed up by 3 part timers, power hitters, bascially they have everything covered on paper. SA plan has to be to catch India on the blind side either going hard with the opening batters or go hard at India in the opening with Steyn and co. Holding India will simply not work I dont beleive as they have too many options. SA also need to considrer Pangiso, but you dont expect to spin India out but it could catch them as they dont know him.

The four deserving teams made it to the semis, and now SL is in the finals. Tomorrow is a big game and what a match. Though I agree India totally deserves to win but I wish either SL or SA take the cup this time as they have not won it as yet while India one the very first tournament and besides they do have the one day WC. SL has made it to many finals and SA has been out of luck for a long time so .. But good luck to both teams for tomorrow.. from a Pak fan.

Posted by henchart on (April 3, 2014, 16:35 GMT)

Pressure ,for a change ,is on India.Proteas are expected to choke and falter against spin anyways.MSD must not err by opting to bowl in a crunch match.Target of 140 can be difficult to achieve for Indians against Steyn and Morkel.Law of average is also something MSD must be awry of.Somehow,Proteas would win this time. Not only against India tomorrow but also against SLK on Sunday.Ab is the big difference and best batsman in all forms of cricket ,at the moment.

India won't mind if their match at this venue tmrw is washed out. They'll qualify because they topped their group

Posted by CodandChips on (April 3, 2014, 16:27 GMT)

Shadow of many other major tournaments of recent times. South Africa's form dips just before the major tournament, but they defy expectations and qualify for the semis, where they usually lose. India and Sri Lanka have pretty much steam-rolled the others (bar the narrow and peculiar loss to England). Cue to Sri Lankan choke in the final, and South African choke in the semis. India will win this tournament. Fair play to them. I expected them to get to the semis, but I thought they'd lose to New Zealand, who'd go on to beat the Sri Lankan choke.

Posted by wapuser on (April 3, 2014, 16:26 GMT)

India will be pumping their fists watching the Sri Lanka West Indies match. If this storm gets going later, the India South Africa match will be washed out, with India moving ahead based on the fact that they topped their group. Weird, right when it started pouring in Dhaka, it started pouring here in the US.

Sidharth Monga writes, in the above article, " And, by the way, the only time they won the semi-final, they went on to win the tournament, the 1998 Champions Trophy, coincidentally in Bangladesh."

A remarkable coincidence about that knockout only championship is that the four teams that reached the semi-finals were South Africa, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and India - the same four competing in the semis again in Dhaka, 16 years later.

Only one player from that tournament (to my knowledge) played in this World T20, the evergreen Shahid Afridi. Australian coach, Darryl Lehman & England coach Ashley Giles, as well as umpire Kumar Dharmasena, all featured as players in that tournament.

All the best to both India and South Africa . should be interesting contest if rain god permits this match. Pitch might change its behaviour after this rain.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:11 GMT)

Similar to the way Italy won the World Cup in 2006, they played a very tight game, every player put in his own share of the work load and the team went on to win, likewise now India is doing the same thing. Outside of the Subcontinent India has failed to prove they are the force they were a few years back and even though I will be hoping South Africa can win this, the fact that India is playing on a pitch they know it hands them the advantage. If India win, it will be good for them but their fans will be fooled into thinking they are the best....

This match is fit for the Final- 2 of the best teams facing off for a place in Final. SA has a strong batting line up in De kock, Amla, Duminy, White & AB de Velliers who can knock the socks off the best bowlers in the world. So the Indian bowling & catching has to be at its best to get each wkt. On the other hand the Indian openers have struggled in all matches except one. Even now India is struggling to decide between Dhawan & Rahane for the opening spot to join Rohit who is also not sure of himself. SA present their triple pace attack led by Steyn & Morkel + a good spin Duo in Duminy & Tahir. Countering this is Consistent Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Yuvraj in batting. The Indian spin trio of Ashwin, Mishra & Jadeja need to fire in order for India to restrict SA to 150 & then chase the total down. Indian seamers Kumar & Mohit Sharma or Shami need to fire as well. The key to Indian bowling will be focus on accuracy & early wkts. via accurate bowling. Winner will be the teamwork on the Day!

Posted by Greatest_Game on (April 3, 2014, 15:40 GMT)

The writer states "If India can win this, it will give them a measure of satisfaction after they came close to pulling off a great upset in Johannesburg."

That sentence can also be quite correctly rephrased as "If India can win this, it will give them a measure of satisfaction after the match in Johannesburg where they came close to conceding the biggest 4th innings run chase in Test Cricket history."

Both accounts are true: neither tells the entire story!

A characteristic of the enduring appeal of test cricket is such dynamic match endings, with all 3 results possible in the last over. After 5 days of intense play, for either team to come within a hair's breadth of victory is testament to the performance & achievements of BOTH groups of players. Such a draw is a shared victory, a collective triumph of will and endurance unsullied by the trite banalities of 'winner,' and 'loser.' Such honourable equity is rare in sports: we should always ensure it remains unparsed, & respected.

Pak and SL fans calling Indian team Flat track Bully is a joke. They themselves can't play anywhere but subcontinent, even in subcontinent they are not consistent and they call India flat track bully. Anyways this one will be decided based on how Indian bowlers perform. A lot depends on them

South Africa gonna win here .... any challenger here .....

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:21 GMT)

This is going to be an interesting match up between two immensely talented sides... As mentioned in the article the usually clinical SA have been rather mercurial and it has spiced up things a bit... I think SA need to retain Hendericks(pace is their strength; Phangiso would be of no use against a strong Indian batting line up)... They need to put AB in at no.3 to make the full use of his skills ... The line up should be like Amla, de Kock, AB, Faf, Duminy, Miller, Albie, Parnell, Hendericks, Steyn and Tahir... India should look to replicate their form in the league stage and they will be pretty hard to stop!

This is going to be the first challenge for India in this tournament. But definitely India are hot favourites, because:- 1. They played all their matches here in Mirpur 2. South Africa have a bad record in SFs 3. India have top-class spinners, batsman and captain

India should keep the same team from the Australia, i.e.

1. Ajinkya Rahane, 2. Rohit Sharma 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Yuvraj Singh, 5. Suresh Raina, 6. MS Dhoni, 7. Ravichandran Ashwin, 8. Ravindra Jadeja, 9. Amit Mishra, 10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11. Mohit Sharma

@Riz000 through your comments, you are tying to tell the world Indai arebad. Let me remind you of one fact - Pakistan have yet to beat India in a World Cup tournament, anywhere in the world. What would that make Pakistan ?

Posted by KabsCricki on (April 3, 2014, 14:02 GMT)

These two always provide classic encounters. The last competitive clash was that mind blowing ODI game in the world cup in 2011 where India with Sachin and Sehwag looked like making 450 at one stage but it went down to the wire and S.A won in the final over with Robbie P's heroics. I suspect its going to be a similarly close one here, India has been used to crushing teams in this tournament and S.A have done it the tight and thrilling way, so slight advantage could be with South Africa.

Posted by Suggsy on (April 3, 2014, 13:54 GMT)

Something that makes no sense to me... Flat Track Bullies? How can Indian batsmen be accused of Flat track bullying, if the batsmen from the opposition are good in Bowler friendly pitches, surely they should be even better in Flat pitches... That makes no sense to say that India are only flat track bullies. If the pitch is flat, then every other batsman from South Africa, Australia and England should be able to bat as good as or better than the Indian team, don't tell me that their batsmen are ONLY good on a bouncy pitch, because that makes even less sense.

it's perfect opportunity for india to show world that how poor SA players are against spin and they are just fast track bullies.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:35 GMT)

India look hot favorite. they have been in form and playing good cricket. Normally their bowling is the weakest link. but in this tournament i think their bowling is their strongest part.

SA also playing good but this will be new ground for them. they have not played here. Spin will play an important role. Chasing will not be that easy. More likely india looking to win it. but its a t20, no 1 can say anything for sure.

hoping to see good game.
