West Indies banked on a frenetic finish, but Sri Lanka's bowlers had choked the chase to suffocation-point before heavy rain, then marble-sized hail, cut the innings short and sent Sri Lanka to yet another major final. When the heavens opened, West Indies had needed 81 from 37 balls, with six wickets remaining. The Duckworth-Lewis calculation had them 27 runs adrift.

It was always a dangerous ploy to begin the chase slowly, but doubly so with rain in the air, and against an attack that features better death bowlers than most in the competition. West Indies had actually scored 17 from the first, wayward over from Nuwan Kulasekara, but as an unambitious Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels hunkered down, they mustered only 17 from the next six.

Sri Lanka's spinners were allowed to settle, and soon, even the expansive shots were being mistimed. Dwayne Bravo tonked 30 for 19, as messages from the dugout implored Samuels to shift into overdrive, but when Bravo fell in the 14th over, West Indies' chances grew desperately slim.

Darren Sammy, who has been the finisher of the tournament, was about to face his first ball when the weather intruded. Two Lasith Malinga overs remained, however, and the required rate may have been beyond even Sammy's rapid blade.

Only Tillakaratne Dilshan prospered out of Sri Lanka's senior batsmen, and even he scored only at a run-a-ball, running two batsmen out, including himself, in the process. Kusal Perera's bold 26 from 12 and Angelo Mathews' canny 40 from 23 gave the innings its flourishes, while Lahiru Thirimanne's 44 from 35 was its substance.

Perera had dealt powerfully to Krishmar Santokie through the leg side, to set Sri Lanka off at more than 10 an over in the first four, before Santokie had him playing on to a leg cutter. Mahela Jayawardene, so often Sri Lanka's big-game performer, was dismissed cruelly before he had had the chance to make an impact with the bat. Dilshan called him through after chopping one to point, but sharp work in the infield and a good throw over the stumps caught Jayawardene short, before he faced a ball. Kumar Sangakkara's demise for 1 from six balls was of his own making. He pushed out early against a slower Samuel Badree ball and lobbed a simple catch to the bowler.

Dilshan lacked fluency, as he has done throughout the tournament, but combined sagely with Thirimanne for 42 to lift Sri Lanka from 49 for 3. He would run himself out too, haring out of the crease when there was no run to be had, but Thirimanne completed the recovery, striking two sixes - including an uppercut over third man off Andre Russell. Thirimanne's innings was as secure as it was well-paced, setting the team up for a death-over spike, with wickets in the bank.

Mathews had been tentative against Sunil Narine early in his innings, often having his outside edge beaten as he prodded. But having been 13 from 14 balls, he gathered pace against Santokie in the penultimate over, to help deliver a furious finish worth 32 in the final two overs. Mathews slammed Santokie over long-on first ball, before collecting a four in the same spot.

Then, when West Indies strengthened the on side, he made room to loft a length ball over cover for four. A flat, fast six over cover next over was the shot of the innings, and a hooked four sent Sri Lanka to 160, before Mathews was athletically caught at deep midwicket by an advancing Bravo, last ball.

Dwayne Smith slogged a four then launched a six off the first two balls of the reply, but following that over, West Indies slowed almost to a stall - first by choice, then by coercion. Malinga arrived in the Powerplay and in his first over bowled Gayle, then Smith with offcutters, before Llendl Simmons was out lbw to Seekkuge Prasanna's first ball of the tournament. At 34 for 3 in the eighth over, West Indies had backed themselves into a mighty corner.

Bravo lashed out valiantly as Sri Lanka's slow-bowling phalanx sought to tamp the run rate down even further. He walloped Rangana Herath and Prasanna over cover, but with Samuels flatlining at the other end and Sri Lanka's fielders throwing themselves around to save boundaries, he could not quite spur a game-breaking charge. A Kulasekara slower ball had him caught at square leg as the required rate spiked over 12. When wild winds brought the downpour over the Sher-e-Bangla later in that over, Samuels was unbeaten on 18 from 29.

SpinKingKK: u gotta be kidding me.... SL has 3 veteran captains + 1 New captain[Matthews]..... so dhoni should look out this time.....

Posted by miles100 on (April 5, 2014, 5:04 GMT)

It won't be easy for India because we are talking about a highly experienced bowling attack and a superior fielding unit of SL here. SL batting do have the calculated hitting ability as India at this stage after Kusal came into the scene. Even Kulasekera is not a slogger during the power batting at the end. He is a calculated six launcher. I see more hunger in the SL squad than the Indians to win it. This time SLs will not be too generous like last times to donate the word cup title to the opposition for the for 5th time. For some reason I see more confidence, energy and charisma in the SL unit.

When i have seen this comments in here,99% Indian fans feed back was harassing to SL.specially they are never happy to see Sl beat India. Any way on this T20-2014 we know India play well.Sl also played & won their crucial games.for me as a real cricket fan & my vision is SL will get the cup on this competition.then I would like to see all of Indian fans eyes have tears end of the sunday night.go Sri Lanka go......God or who ever help to you as Sammy's feedback on last match,we know what you can do...100% I am sure SL go on time. best of luck both teams.

Why cant they finish the game after rain? Why use DL in T20?

Posted by spinkingKK on (April 5, 2014, 0:19 GMT)

@Reza Sulaiman, you guys have a great record against the South Africans. So, one would think that it is always better off playing against a team you beat all the time. India, on the other hand, beats you guys most of the time - ordinary or not. Past performances by Dhoni, apart from Kohli, in the current team could still be worth remembering. I am only saying it because you said that the Indian team is ordinary. I can understand it as a psychological war if it comes from the Sri Lankan captain. But, as fans, there is no need to. Logically speaking, both teams are equal. Sri Lanka does have an edge in their fielding in the deep. But, it is slightly compensated if you take into account the experience of the Indian captain.

When the Caribbean Premier League starts this year..the world will see how enjoying t20 is..we wait till the rain finished and bat for our lives even if it means midnight...we don't give up!...haha

@Reza Sulaiman..India won the semis in grand style...im sad about your team that gone out of the tournament very much early...your statement resembles like, if you take out all 11 players, your team is weak...lol we are going to win the 6th GLOBAL TITLE on sunday....keep watching

SL must b scared now... The best final would be Ind vs Aus... but unlucky aus are out, it benefitted SL...

Posted by Godfrey580 on (April 4, 2014, 18:48 GMT)

We shall never know why the Gods do the things they do. But make no mistake WI hold no fear for any team least of all SrL. And WI record show that the match would have been a cracker. Malinga or no Malinga, Harath or no Harath. 80 runs in 6.1 ovs is the type runs chase WI were scoring at will. And with Samuels and Sammy at the wk, game was very much on. The Gods r in favour of Ind not SrL. SrL is a piece of cake for Ind. Always.

Posted by dr0nachar7a on (April 4, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

@Nipuna, a reserve day ensures there is a complete game and no doubts about who won ! think about it - if sri lanka had been in windies position (leave out the match, just take the final numbers) and needed 80 off the last 5 overs with 5 wickets in hand, would you have thought a D/L loss fair? that, really, is the issue with knockout games having no reserve days

Posted by cric4ind on (April 4, 2014, 16:53 GMT)

I feel bad for the West Indies, rain is the only reason Sri Lanka are in the finals. This should have been an India West Indies final.

Posted by willsrustynuts on (April 4, 2014, 16:33 GMT)

D/L has no place in T20's. Determining outcomes in this way is a joke. The rest of the World looks on laughing.

i dont satisfied by this

Posted by Samarian on (April 4, 2014, 15:07 GMT)

That cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties was manifested in the last WI/SL encounter. S/L played exceedingly well against a Team which has a reputation for achieving difficult goals under their gentleman captain Darren Sammy. Sammy may well have provided an inspired innings (again) had the game gone the distance but we will never know. What is certain is that the batsmen who precede him should pull their weight and not expect him to win the day consistently. That said, Team West Indies have given a good account of itself during the tournament and can exit with heads held high. Of course, retaining the trophy would have been far better.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 14:37 GMT)

The current format of T20 has be re-assessed and re-designed. The D/L method is not applicable to T20 since it is often a games of a few balls 'making' or breaking teams. One side gets their allotted 20 overs to set up the game, and the other has to struggle against the weather to establish a game rather than trying to overcome the opposing players. A fairer setup would be for each to face ten overs then the other side face a ten overs, and the process repeated to complete the 40 overs (for the entire game). In this way if the weather interrupts the proceedings then the game could be shortened to let the teams play the last set of overs based on the level of inclemency; example 5 overs by one side followed by five by the other. And if rain totally crashes the game then the ten overs that the both teams faced would be used to determine the weather. It kills the spirit of the game when one team gets to bat out it's 20 overs and the other doesn't.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 13:21 GMT)

let's just say there was a reserve day. are u all saying that because it rained so late in the game they should start a new game.? how fair is that on Lanka after playing so well?

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 13:14 GMT)

way to go sri lanka. clearly champs

Posted by Mittaraghava on (April 4, 2014, 13:00 GMT)

WI had an equal chance to win,but credit to SL they played well at vital situations.Peiraira started the fireworks and Tirumane steadied the innings and Mathews gave the final finishing touch to Sl innnings.About WI Malinga had a great spell removing Gayle and D.smith.D.Bravo played his role. But something wrong with with Samuels,he was playing test cricket.Hit out or Get out was the situtation and he was plodding with still 3 specialist batsmen and 3 tailend batsman to play. The captain or the coach should have sent the signal saying"what the hell are you doing there,it is T20 match hit out or get out and give enough balls to the next batsman to play".Credit to SL for winning the match .When the match was called off,Samuels had done enough damage and WI would not have made that total to win.

Did India win against South Africa already, why this people talk about sl vs India finale

Posted by KavindaSalgado on (April 4, 2014, 12:56 GMT)

The Weather God diminished the delight of getting the fitting result sans D/L tag SL deserved for their hard work. It is worth reminding how the same Weather God had a decisive hand in the RESULT of last t20 WC Final-2012. SL target was just 132 in 20 overs. In the 12th over they were 60 for 3 with MJ batting well, scoring 33 in 35 balls. They just needed 78 in 48 balls with 7 wickets in hand. Well within the target! Then came the DRIZZLE from nowhere in the 13th over, pressuring MJ to push the score up to meet the D/L par score at that stage. Then the sudden collapse started losing MJ, while trying a reverse pull against spin! This was followed by TWO sudden RUN OUTS, one in the same 13th over & the next in 14th over, while trying to push the score up, SKY-ROCKETTING the D/L par score! At the end of 14thOvr, the Drizzle faded away, making SL 68/6 requiring 70 from 36 balls. SL never recovered from that collapse & another deserved chance for a WC title was GONE AWAY WITH THE DRIZZLE!

Posted by TheKeeper on (April 4, 2014, 12:56 GMT)

Sri Lanka won the game, so live with it.

Here's my scenario: I honestly think that the rain saved West Indies a huge humiliation. The collapse was just around the corner and the rain saved 'face' for the West Indies. Sri Lanka were just warming up and we all know how the wickets tumble when SL gets going.

Such scenarios are all 'if'. But in all honesty the most likely scenario to play out if the rain hadn't interrupted was a West Indies slide/collapse - rather than Sammy getting over 12 runs an over. Everyday ain't Christmas.

Posted by bravetigersmustwin on (April 4, 2014, 12:47 GMT)

WI could have easily finished the game.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:25 GMT)

In all ICC tournament from 2007, 7 teams are fighting for one place in the final and other place is by default SL. This is an awsum record. It will be the same for 2014 worldcup too. I dont care about all these ratings, but for me within the last 7 years, SL has been the best team by miles. True legends.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:23 GMT)

Crucial matches like semi finals should have a reserve day, as you can't determine the outcome on D/L method. Look what Sammy did to Pakistan. I am sure he can do this to any attack

Posted by Nadeemusman on (April 4, 2014, 11:22 GMT)

Congratulations to SL on victory. wI dont loose your heart. Love and respect from Pakistan.

Posted by hurting_westindian on (April 4, 2014, 11:13 GMT)

WI have no one to blame for that loose but themselves. Their entire approach to this tournament could not have won them the title. And now that their fun is over hopefully they will get down to addressing the many serious issues affecting WI cricket

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 11:11 GMT)

According to most of the comments the game was in WI's hands when the rain came. how funny. according to what they say, WI will all the matched if there is no rain. they only need is to sammy to come in the 15th over abd score 80 runs. Even with Ireland i don't think they can repeat same thing again and again. It's clear that most people hate SL, when they doing well. because we are a small country and we have quality silent players not IPL figures like Gayle/Miller.

Many Indian supporters didn't like the D/L. I hope today they get selected for the finals with D/L by a small margin and let's see what they have to say about that.

are u say lucky lions ok it's ok, this time unlucky others, wait & see final,i wish to india comes for final because lions are roaring in the final

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 10:17 GMT)

for the people who bark against sri lankan win based on D/L. I know that is not the best way to win. But after all WIN IS WIN. This could have happned to SL if they loss the toss and bowled first. Cricket is all about team work, your attitude, commitment and after all IT INVOLVES LUCK. In 2012 everything was with WI and they won the toss then batted first and put 137 on board. But in chasing Sri Lanka start falling wickets when they were trying to catch-up D/L par score due to predictions of rain. It was there day and yesterday was Ours. ADMIT IT we were the best team yesterday. Everyoone says they could have scored 81 runs in 37 balls. But no one said They scored 17 in first over and just managed to get another 17 in next 6 overs. That shows the quality of sri lankan blowling line up.. Windies cant do same thing they did with Pakis with strong sri lankan bowling attack. :D :D :D

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 9:46 GMT)

Before the tournament start Mr. Waqar Yunus and Mr. Wasim Akram point out 4 teams that has play semis and for the Final SL will not reach now even I cannot see them are in the commentary box even.

Posted by anshu.s on (April 4, 2014, 9:13 GMT)

I think it is a pointless debating D/L method, there should have been a reserve day kept in provision, this kind of thing would never happen in a major Football tournament in knockout scenarios or for that matter any major Tennis or golf tournaments, i distinctly remember a tennis match which was held up because of rain finishing at 4 AM in US Open. Cricket is selling itself short by letting TV companies dictate things.

Posted by onebump on (April 4, 2014, 8:50 GMT)

Well done SL!!!!

I wa wondering why Malinga bowled two overs so early. It look like SL had an idea there was rain in the air. That was very smart by our guys. To think the WIbatsmen had toonly maintan a 100 % run rate and they would have won on DL. Not so smart!

Hope SL improve 20% more for the final.

Posted by hasran on (April 4, 2014, 8:50 GMT)

My dear Jezinho dont come with wrong stats that 80 odd of 7 overs like that.only 6.1 overs were left at that moment and how dare can you say that slogger of sammy caliber can achieve that target against malinga's death bowling.

Posted by priceless1 on (April 4, 2014, 8:36 GMT)

Sanga is doing nothing in the team , since it may look harsh to drop him in his final game , they should at least drop him down the batting line up

Well done SL!! Good luck for the Big finale!! This time we can do it!! Play hatd SL!!!

Posted by hail_sarcasm on (April 4, 2014, 8:13 GMT)

Congrats SL! Better team won yesterday. The key for success for SL was they keep rotating strike in the middle overs inspite of losing wickets. They made full use of first 5 and last 5 overs. WI failed to do that all across the tournament. Very clinical performance, collective efforts overcame individual brilliance.

Posted by Last_Knight on (April 4, 2014, 7:59 GMT)

Well done lions....you showed the world who you are. People talking about like WI invent the spin bowling and they destroy us before the match begin. Com on entire world forgot who are the master of spinners. Now they talking about last few overs and extra days. We also can counter attack saying we could have bowled them out like we did against SA. Or we should have won 2007 WC final against AUS if there were a reserve day.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 7:55 GMT)

SL is full of unsung heroes. May be due to the fact that they perform as a team. There are no one or two hyped players who will always win matches for Sri Lanka. When one goes down, one comes up, he gives his hand to the one who is down and at the end of the day they end up with wins and consistent performances. That's why people around world have not been able to define the success formula of SL so become jealous. They may be thinking ''SL does not have so called 'big hitters', 'ever consistent players', 'bowlers who never got hammered' like the ones in our team. Let me tell you the why such an 'underrated' team in some peoples view has been so successful. Less ego, selflessness, positive attitudes towards self, others and cricket, Team spirit, Killer instinct (This is a recent inclusion), Respect and Knowing the limitations. SL is just like the quiet ocean. You never know how much deep it is and how much is in

Posted by wapuser on (April 4, 2014, 7:28 GMT)

dont forget sl scored those crucial runs in the final few overs. plus evn if the wi score isnt par wt sl wn the game stopped,we all kno they score the bulk only n the last few overs.so it was cruel to hand wi this decision.but its not lankas fault tht we use this flawed dl method.this is why we shudnt use such methods fr long yrs as gradually a flawed method is accepted as normal! wish smbdy had opposed ths frm the time sa lost 92wc.but god knws hw sl desrvs t win a major icc title wt sch consistncy evn bttr than sa all these yrs.thou im an ind fan,its t20,one bad spell and its over.gd luck t all

It was a great victory for Sri Lanka and waiting to see them lifting the cup on April 6th and give a perfect sending off to Sanga and Mahela and all the Sri Lankan fans including me after 18 years :) and they definitely deserve to win a global event such as world cup.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 7:05 GMT)

Although India is the hot favourite of this tournament but Sri Lanka really deserves this world cup because it is their 3rd final in the t20 world cups. The first one in 2009 against Pakistan, the second one in the previous 2012 world cup against West Indies and the third one now. Go Sri Lanka get this!!!!!

Posted by Prabhash1985 on (April 4, 2014, 6:44 GMT)

Sri Lanka truly deserves this. Congratulations! They played really well. Most beautiful moments were Malinga's bowling that hit the top of the middle stump, and the big whacks given by Angelo. Awesome to watch. There is a saying in Sri Lanka, that "Devil is not that dark as they say"... Of course West Indies is a great side, not doubt, but nobody is invincible... Hope India win tonight... because it's our neighbouring country. I wished Pakistan will win too, but unfortunate they did not.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 6:15 GMT)

Bravo is the key to WI win not Sammy.. for sure against such bowling attack with scoreboard pressure. Sammy would receive same destiny that Dwen smith, Gayle and Marlen Samuel received from SL bowling attack. Who else to bat like champion in WI squad ? I think WI missing Kieron Pollard..

Match turned when Bravo left the pitch. It is very good counter attack from SL bowlers and they are very strong in depth bowling these days. I think lesson learnt from last world cup T20.

We should reject DL system and replace with next day play method in another ground or same ground esp for semi finals and finals in T20.

SL will face a big final.. unbeaten India or SA is not easy team to defeat. SL has to play their best and stop panicking in their hard times in final. India can chase any amount but they are weak in defending. SA heavily depends on AB. If AB got out to lower score then SL has huge chance. SL should consider those fact if toss wins in final

Posted by Jezinho on (April 4, 2014, 6:01 GMT)

SL were clearly ahead in the game, but a semi-final of a major tournament should not be decided by the DL method. The organisers should make provision for an extra day - did they not learn from the fiasco of the ODI World Cup in SA a few years back? I also think that DL shouldn't be used for T20 matches. That NZ could be deemed to be the winners against England after only 5.2 overs was a joke. In this game, particularly with proven big hitters in their line-up, the Windies could have reached their target. 80 odd off 7 overs was not unattainable. The way that this match was finished was all wrong.

Posted by ksquared on (April 4, 2014, 5:59 GMT)

Martin Crowe is right when he say that WI were comically bad. WI lack of cricketing sense and professionalism was appalling. If a teams strategy is to meander along for 3/4 of an innings and hope somebody can smash 13-14 runs in an over without loosing wickets for the remaining overs just because they did the same to some poor bowling in the previous match then they don't deserve to win. In the end bad weather or not the better team won.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 5:53 GMT)

s/l has the most exp team plus a team gelling in the final stages but whoever they meet in the final if that team plays to its potential its not going to be easy s/l will need to play out of their skins to beat either of the two teams

Posted by CricketFirst on (April 4, 2014, 5:53 GMT)

Congrats to SL for positive attitude and well executed game plan which ensured a place in the final. A real team effort by playing 11, reserves, coaching staff and management. Like to mention few points which can be useful for the final.

Prefer if Kusal bats one gear below his highest gear which enables him to play a longer innings and do a lot of damage to the opposition.

Need to keep a healthy run rate going even if you lose wickets. In the semi we were bit slow in the middle overs luckily Anjelo was able to finish brilliantly getting the par score. Hope Mahela & Sanga come to party in the final and get more boundaries in the mid overs.

Kulasekera need to be on top of his game otherwise he may leak runs due to lack of pace. If he's not in good shape he can be replaced by Lakmal who has the pace, bounce and good yokers. A quality bowling attack is a must to win T20 games.

Surely SL can take the title this time. Good Luck for the finals!!!

Ha ha.. another final. Mahela is due a big one in the final.. that's what he always do. Great respect for big SL three for their contribution to this small little nation. We will always remember you guys. Luckily its not about those three guys anymore..Kusal, Methews, Thirimanne... Sekku stepping up to the ocation nicely.I know very few who wished for Sri Lankan win but this little nation has some heart.. hearts of lions.

I don't understand why some fans want to decide on a toss while there is an analytically driven solution in the form of D/L. D/L does not complete the game rather it analyses the events upto the time rain arrives to stop play and deciding on toss will be harsh on the side who did better upto rain. Similarly, re-playing the match will also be harsh on the side who did better upto rain as next day another might wrest the control which will be unfair. With D/L there are no leftovers while the toss to decide the winner will create too many heartbreaks for teams who were winning till rain interrupted. Furthermore, the ICC champions trophy final was 20-20 game and no one wanted to take it to next day to play full 50 over match. So, we have to accept SL were the better team and who knows Windies after winning the full game would have gone on to win the finals.

Posted by KK_SL on (April 4, 2014, 5:01 GMT)

India is a far better team than SA. They have the best batting line up which could destroy any bowling attack in the world. As a Sri Lankan fan I strongly support India to win. MSD is the best ODI /T20 captain in the moment. I wish we will have a great final on Sunday. Hope SL will have a better day out and lift the trophy this time.. Wish you all the best Indian Fans for the semi final and final !!!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 4:56 GMT)

Guys!, what if India vs SA match was decided on D/L method today and it gives India a win. Will these same Indians complaining like they do right now???

West Indies was newer in the game, they lost the game in the first Innings it self by Sri Lanka scoring 160 runs. and when chasing they were newer in the game. even if the game played full 20 overs, i firmly believe SL would have bowled out whole WI batting line up or win by at lest 30+ runs. Samuels struggles, Sammy with the 2 or 3 balls he faced it shows how he struggles to score. With the champion bowler like Malinga, Senanayaka, Prasanna and Kulasekara in the arsenal, West Indies defeat was unavoidable. SL stormed in to final with that sweet little pay back over Windies.

Now that SL are through to the final, hopefully they will play to potential and the big guns Dilshan,Mahela & Sanga will fire ably supported by thirimanne, mathews and the bowling outfit to win this final, irrespective of who the opposition will be.

Congrats to SL for their well DESERVED WIN, YES WELL DESERVED. performance like previous game from WI (against pak) can't be repeated again and again. Not taking anything away for their brutal batting in last 4 -5 overs against pak but we should not be forgetting that it was the worst line and length from gul, ajmal and company. End of the day, 166 was very gettable target, its just because of Pakistan's pathetic batting, WI won. As far as this game concern, Malinga and company would have bowled WI out less than 140 (Max)

Nothing could be more absurd than the concept of an "abbreviated" T20 match. T20 was sold as a 2-3 hour version of cricket to begin with. They could have easily continued the game the next morning and got a proper result in 40 minutes. After all, the pitch is not going to be used and the players are all in town. Once again the fans are being taken for a ride by the shady T20 concept.

in this world cup none of the Lankan batsman in top 5 run getter or bowlers in top 5 in wicket takers its pure class that each batsman score in each game and all 5 bowlers were once a bowler of the day.Sri lankans playing as a team unlike other teams whom depend alot on 1 or 2 players

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 4:40 GMT)

So now everyone saying... D/L result should be "WI won by 6 wickets with 2 balls remaining" what a joke. true, they did it once. got 82 in 30 balls (not against SL. Pak with bad death bowling). so SL can also can say we will repeat like in SA match which we won when they needed 54 of 30 balls with around 5 wickets in hand.

So WI did it against PAK. does that mean WI can do it against SL. if it was at least with a wet ball, that could be a good argument. don't mind the haters, SL played well to get there.

Or may be someday ICC might decide to go ahead with the team which has most fan support. All haters can cry till that day.

Why there is no Extra Day For a event like World Cup and a Semi Final ??? Something wrong. DL method is not perfect. Also designing a perfect method also difficult. Why cant they play even a shortened version next day? Another Venue ? True Lanka were on Top, But WI had a chance. It tastes bitter to win like this...

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 4:17 GMT)

Smacking the Pak attack..is one thing ...smacking the SL attack is another ..as still 2 overs of Malinga was left. SL would have won in 90% of cases . But I will have to agree that DL method is a real spoiler for the viewers

Posted by FLIPPER_99 on (April 4, 2014, 4:16 GMT)

lol instead of blaming the D/L method & the rain & whatnot the people commenting here should understand that the death overs were going to be bowled by malinga, seynanayake, n kulasekara who are the best in the business at this stuff. i would say kulasekara is the weak link but since he's ranked 8th no one can argue with the stats. & also you could say that bowlers can go wayward in a match but considering the initial overs from these bowlers (bar kulas 1st over) they were spot on. also with bravo gone (thats half of the batting that got them 82 off 5) n samuels struggling at the other end it would have been a calk walk for SL anyways. but in the end i am disappointing as a cricket fan for not seeing a full game.

Posted by Sugath on (April 4, 2014, 4:10 GMT)

The result is a mirror image of 2012 final but other way about. In 2012 West Indies batted first and Malinga went for 54 in 4 overs, and yesterday just 4 runs from two overs and two wickets. Marlon was the destroyer in 2012 and yesterday just a passenger. Sammy spoke too much about the 2012 yesterday trying to create fear psychosis in Lankan minds but what happened was it was West Indies who ultimately got fear psychosis. Of course Martin Crowe got it all wrong, claiming that West Indies are the team when the result showed it was the Lankans who were the better outfit. Kudos to Lankans and commiserations to West Indies.

Posted by 9ST9 on (April 4, 2014, 4:09 GMT)

Against PAK as well as Aus Sammy had a good partner. Samuels was a huge liability here - even if the game went the whole way WI wouldn't pull it off. I think it's time to give messrs. Gayle and Samuels a bit of a break to focus on their game.

Posted by ground-boy on (April 4, 2014, 4:08 GMT)

BAN imposed on regular captain was a blessing in disguise paving the way to select the winning combination for the series n for the future. Slinging style came in place of Gangnam style. Sri Lanka deserved to be there in finals. If golden-oldies not firing up to the expectation maintaining 150% strike rate specially within the power-play, old-aged selectors must consider radical replacements introducing more younger players. Wicket taking spin bowlers and more all-rounders. KJ may keep wickets. Weather or light-tower failures may be a part n parcel of the life like sport. Nobody wants to share the title under the MOON owing to such interruptions, whether it is won by Sub Continent or further down Africa.

Posted by 9ST9 on (April 4, 2014, 4:07 GMT)

@Sumar Moonji Ganesh - What poor decision mate? And what backfired? Playing Gayle or playing Samuels or both?

Posted by 9ST9 on (April 4, 2014, 4:06 GMT)

The knowledgeable pundit's here are stating that if not for the rain Sammy et al would have done the job for WI. Yea rite, in the same way that if Corey Anderson was not Injured NZ would have beaten SL, I am getting sick of this people who lack the grace to accept a good performance as a good performance but instead try to associate it with luck, very much like an international captain who in 2012, after losing a game to Australia where there was a slight drizzle at one point said that they lost because of the rain. Some people can't simply be fixed can they?

Posted by Ranrenu on (April 4, 2014, 4:06 GMT)

For all the people that are saying that D/L method is unfair and are implying that WI were the victims, take note that WI had to score 108 runs in 13.5 overs to win. Thats at a RRR of 7.80 rpo. The RRR if they had to play 20 overs is 8.05. So by my understanding, WI had to score at a slower rate in lesser overs to win the game with D/L method. Point to ponder?

true that Sri lanka won the game, but Sammy made cricket win with his statement - Lankan fan

Posted by randikaayya on (April 4, 2014, 3:51 GMT)

What a clinical performance by Sri Lanka, and hats off to Darren Sammy and the Windies, always worthy opposition! i suppose those Indians commenting wont understand the difference between having a strong finish batting first and chasing down a target of over 2 runs each ball!!! Hope they make it through to the final so the satisfaction of winning is more! We've already beaten Saffers this tourney.

Posted by BandulaG on (April 4, 2014, 3:51 GMT)

hi...folks, out there don't simply criticize D/L method for the sake of criticizing it.You need to come up with a better statistical model which is NO easy meat. For the record, these two SA statistical wiz kids came up with this formula at a time where there was no proper method. Remember the 1992 semi final where SA was asked to score 22 runs in a single ball.So without being an armchair critic go ahead & find a better solution!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 3:49 GMT)

Sorry spinkingkk..... I am a SL fan... I rather face India (if they win tonight... which I very much doubt).... in the final that SA....... India is really an ordinary team if you leave out kohli, dhoni and for this tournament, mishra.

Posted by DilumSL on (April 4, 2014, 3:49 GMT)

As a SL fan i also think DL method is not suitable for deciding the result of the game. may be the method is ok for set a score in reduced over game. About the game it is not the WI who are unlucky, i think fans are the most unlucky party coz they missed out a great game. It could have gone either way. But still i believe SL have the upper hand as WI lost Bravo at the end. may be 55% for SL and 45% for WI. SL batting is still not up to their best. Sanga is doing almost nothing at no 4. should bring him back to no 3. again Dilshan couldn't time the ball. he gets runs but 100% SR is not what we expect from him. Inclusion of Thiri and Sekku is a good move. but we missed Tisara's power hitting. but for now it's hard for him to find his place unless on of the seniors(may be Dilshan) opt them self out as Chandi did.

Even if the rain did not disturb the game, SL would have definitely won. WI could not get a good start. Run rate at the time of rain was ovwr 12 per over and there were not many remaining overs. i wish it did not rain, so we could have watched WI lose.Weldone Sl, I am sure this time T20 cup is yours. God help you all for that.Amen!

Posted by Udendra on (April 4, 2014, 3:31 GMT)

If Windies backed to get the total in the last overs, SL backed themselves with their death bowling. Simple as that!

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 3:29 GMT)

It was sad to see WI loose in the semis. They were not unlucky, they caused their own demise.Gayle did not playing his natural game,he was so sluggish and took a long time to settle. He was playing as if he were in a daze.

It seems like India's gonna qualify for the finals whether they play or not cz there is 75+% chance of thunderstorm tonight in Dhaka just like yesterday.. If this game washes out due to rain then India will automatically qualify for the finals cz India earned more points in the group stage than South Africa.. So, SL get ready for another heartbreak.. I hope there's no thunderstorm though cz I want to see a hard fought battle between these two teams(Ind-SA) and also we want to earn the final spot not get it by D/L or other mind-numbing methods..There's no pride in that..

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 3:24 GMT)

Comon guys isn't it childish to discuss the rules after it has happened. Have any team gone in to the matches without knowing the rules? We know if it rains it is D/L which decides the winners. And windies batted already 14 overs. Still to face 2 overs of Malinga (2 Wkts for just 5 runs of his last two), and 2 of Senanayake to follow. And all big hitters are back in the pavilion (Gayles, Bravo, and Sammy was extremely lucky not to get out in Dilshan's run out attempt, almost out) Even if it was play on...no way Windies could have taken it from SL. Bring on any storm now....You can't even come closer to the Lions....

Posted by vihnga_De_cptan on (April 4, 2014, 3:14 GMT)

I also agree d/l isnt a good way to decide a t20.bt we cant control weather.with Pak , Wi get the mtch in to their hand in last 5 over.Sammy done really well.bt dnt frget , at that time they werent in much presurre.bt with Sl their batsmen were faild to construct their inning. They had to concentrate about weather n apout d/l par score.Cricket is a vry excitement game till to end.No doubt abt it.Bt i dnt believe last mth the could find their mtch in last 37 balls with a strong bowling site of Sl.

don't like D/L method when you loose but not when wining??? stop whining, stop complaining... And stop playing cricket if you don't like the rules, just as simple as that. Envy wont get your teams anywhere fellas.... Looking forward for a SA win today...

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 3:07 GMT)

To concede 17 in the first over and then just 13 in the next 5 overs with two dangerous batsman at the crease was enough to award win to SL. Getting Bravo was another sealing of SL superiority. SL team balance was very good and it was going to be a SL win anyway!

Posted by JOHNCSPACE on (April 4, 2014, 3:04 GMT)

Plain show of clinical precision or just sub continent class by SL, in-spite of Jaya and Sanga getting ducks. That has to do with some luck and the "good riddance" behaviour of WI from the previous matches. After all this is a hit and miss game... With lots of luck and some application . So losing does not mean your not class, it's the way you play ...likeAustralia for example, to bad we lost get on with it. On the other hand WI were cut down to size by this SL squad, looking forward to a smashing final...and I think it's going to be the SA v SL. Malinga v Styen, let's enjoy

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 2:58 GMT)

This reminds me the last WC T20 final. SL faild to chase apparently a low score after somewhat good start as they tried to pick the score up to a DL par score fearing rain might fall. They loose wickets rapidly by trying to do this. Even Mahela who was well settled there played a risky shot to increase the score to DL par score. Incidentally the same teams met again but this time No expectation of rain whatsoever. But ultimately rain....Oh no its a storm fall. BTW, The comments here shows clearly that win by SL has hurt more of some other country fans than WI fans. Lets see in future if those fans country win matches by DL, may be the final cup -who knows- what their responses then!

Application of Duckworth-Lewis calculations has been throwing up unsatisfactory and frustrating results. As it is, rain stoppages during a match distort performances, even if the matches are completed. Application of mere statistical extrapolation increases the distortion to a pointless extent. The shorter the format, the more unfair the application of D-L turns out to be. Deciding the winner by toss of coin(if there is no other practicable alternative) is fairer. Such matches should be treated as 'abandoned' for purposes of records.

Posted by spinkingKK on (April 4, 2014, 2:29 GMT)

Sorry to see the West Indies exit in this sad fashion. But, they have all agreed to play by this stupid D & L method (The method itself is not stupid. But, when it is applied to T20's, it is). Anyway, all the Indian fans should be happy. I think if India makes it to the final (which I am almost sure that they will in a convincing fashion), they are better off facing Sri Lanka than the WI. No disrespect to the thoroughly professional Sri Lankan outfit. But, West Indies would have been a scary opposition to face in the Final. Likewise, Sri Lankans will be hoping for the South Africans to win, so that they can have an easy final.

Posted by xtrafalgarx on (April 4, 2014, 2:08 GMT)

The true Windies showed up. Always felt they got very lucky in 2012 and here too. Gayle is not a big game player and none if their power hitters are consistent. Good bowling though, but that's about it.

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 4, 2014, 2:03 GMT)

Just one match before WestIndies scored 82 runs in last 30 balls against Pakistan. How can we say that WI cannot score 81 runs in last 37 balls? They were just about to launch and rain has come just to stop their win. Ridiculous. D/L is not suitable to T20 at all. SL won but this is not the way to win a match. Hard luck WI.

I lost all the interest on this series . I would not have felt happy even if India has won a match like this. in 50 over match D/L ok to some extent, but not suitable for t20 at all. They have to change the numbers in that D/L calculations. In fact there is a possibility to score 30+ runs in last over, so D/L is not suitable at all. ICC has to rethink about this and at least go for bowl out or super over in cases like these.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 2:02 GMT)

Congrats SL on you win and qualifying for finals again.. You deserved it cz d/l method or not your bowlers choked WI batting line-up and they were struggling to score runs..anyway I will request those sl fans who r saying cup is ours, no matter who comes to finals we will beat them..I have only one thing to say to them..Don't be overconfident..160 wasn't a score that cudn't be chased..Better batting line-up cud have chased it down like India's so don't keep ur expections high and wait for the finals to begin.. In cricket expect the unexpected.. India will qualify for the finals and will win it again..

Posted by wapuser on (April 4, 2014, 1:57 GMT)

Instead of calling the Duckworth Lewis method farcical, it'll be really nice if some knowledgeable commenters here could go and actually make an effort to know about it.

The Duckworth Lewis method is quite fair to the teams and is probably the best method around. VJD method is also quite similar and the calculations would be marginally different there.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 1:54 GMT)

it is absurd to follow D/L method to get a result for rain affected matchs. We have seen many matches where 70 to 90 runs were scored in the last four or five overs for a great finish. But the D/L method cannot predict correctly. For the shorter version game atleast for 20-20 matches at the final stages, instead of following D/L method, a replay (another match) can be arranged to give full satisfaction to players and spectators as well. ICC should look into this aspect and immediate steps should be taken.

Posted by luckyias on (April 4, 2014, 1:51 GMT)

Where are those who guys talk about sl batting with out sanga and mahela. look at the score board sanga-1, mahela-0. But sl batted superbly. all batsmen contributed their all strength. OOh look at that fielding from lions. Specially from 36 yrs dilshan. you are like a young powerful cricket. Now you have broken the final curse by winning Asia cup final. This is your cup sl boys. you deserve this win.........

Posted by jmcilhinney on (April 4, 2014, 1:30 GMT)

Marlon Samuels seems to have been completely out of sorts this tournament. This is not the first time that his slow scoring has put pressure on the WI lower order. They have been able to respond on a number of occasions but it's a risky method. WI will feel a bit unlucky to lose by D/L and there certainly was a chance that they could have won it but SL were definitely favourites and you can't really complain about D/L if you score slowly when you know that rain is a strong possibility.

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (April 4, 2014, 1:29 GMT)

I am a WI supporter. Gayle and Samuels carry too much brand value and in the process affected the way Smith, Simmons and Bravo played and got out. If these two have played freely, the result would have been very different. Pakistan and WI are two teams with great talent but will never prosper because they never learn.

West Indies you fighted well to end up in the semi final..it is not your fault that a storm occurred...however applying a dock worth lewis system to t20 game is like eating food without salt and it takes all the enjoyment out of cricket. if all t20 games are determined by a dockworth lewis system then i might have to stop watching t20 games. Also, I gave this message to Ajith Jayasuriya who said "There was hardly any chance for WI to win" : West Indies have been in more worse situation than this and surprisingly they won..take for example the match with West Indies vs Australia in this tournament. However congratulations Sri lanka! Hope you finish in style!..

Posted by miles100 on (April 4, 2014, 1:19 GMT)

If rain didn't hit my belief is SL would still win after seeing a bit of fast scoring and a slight bit of fight back. Because Sri Lanka bowlers are the best during last few overs, SL is the more confident side to pull the victory anyway.

Posted by wackwella on (April 4, 2014, 1:10 GMT)

West Indies team is my second favorite after Sri Lanka. I can still remember the way they cheered Sri Lanka at the 2007 WC final.

Interestingly, before this match so many people including so-called cricket pundits predicted there will be Ind vs WI final. Even before the start of the Asia cup that SL won, many people predicted an Ind vs Pak final, but that was proved wrong. I also found out that some Indian fans posted comments during last few months against Sri Lanka saying that SL only winning by luck, just fluke wins. They never gave credit to Sri Lanka. So I want South Africa to play in the finals to make their mouths shut!!! Anyway I saw few Indian fans posting positive comments about Sri Lanka and so many fans from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and even from Nepal. I would like to thank all of them.

Great win for us. Sanga is due for a big innings. Mahela got out for a duck. I hope both will put up a good show in finals. But on thing for sure, if these two click then we can really post big total. They can find boundaries with risk free shots. I still think we should play Thissara in the finals. His T20 batting record is amazing. I am not sure how good is prasanna with the bat.

WI could have easily won this game. Whoever have watched the way WI won their league matches, must have thought the same. WI had real fire power in the last 5 overs. However for this kind of tactics, DL rule is not fair.

Posted by   on (April 4, 2014, 0:32 GMT)

WI lost not becsuse of the rain they lost because of their slow batting. they were going at less than runner ball for first 14 overs when the original asking rate was at 8; they can not expect sammy to score all the runs in the last 5 as WI had their moments twice in the tournament, wi lost from the time that Sammy talked some rubbish about lastwc final and showed the overconfidience.

Crux of the WI chase: 17 runs in the first over. And, 17 runs in the next 6 overs! Lackadaisical Gayle & Samuel were the real snails.

Gayles' form (not only his batting, running, & fielding) gives me a real scare about Yuvi doing a Gayle for India. Yuvi, like Gayle, is nowhere near his "usual form". I have the fear that both are in the beginning of their end. Both had been great players, winners & great entertainers. Hope and wish I am proved wrong.

SL would have won even if they to ball 20 overs. It is ridiculous to think that sammy would hit 81 from 37.... SL lions are the champions

Posted by spinkingKK on (April 3, 2014, 23:47 GMT)

@gws716, I can't agree more. It appears that you haven't seen the England v/s New Zealand match. England scored 170+ in their 20 overs and they decided the match in New Zealand's favor after seeing 5 overs into the New Zealand's innings. In ODI's the D&L method got it right 90% of the time. But, in T20's it is a joke. Because, the game can change dramatically in the space of two overs. It's stupid to use the same formula in T20's.

Posted by MeijiMura on (April 3, 2014, 23:24 GMT)

The West Indies left it too late once again. They can't keep relying on Bravo and Sammy to score all the runs and do so at 10+ an over every time. Having said that under the circumstances the West Indies had to go hard at the top and also elevate Bravo and Sammy to #3 and #4 in the batting order respectively, but they didn't and they paid the price. The top order were too slow and there was way too much even for Bravo and Sammy to do once they got to the crease, but had they batted higher up the order they would have had the chance to be the heroes once again, but even they needed a hand from Gayle and Smith that wasn't forthcoming in this case. Simmons is not a T20 player whilst Samuels takes too long to get going, so they need a change of personnel in the top four. Russell isn't a T20 bowler either and shouldn't have been given a game.

Posted by KingPower on (April 3, 2014, 23:19 GMT)

This was THE fitting result for the game....Sri Lanka were the more clever tacticians to outfox the powerful Windies...on this particular day....we must NOT read anything more into it...It is only a GAME.....NOT a symbol of a Nation's superiority or inferiority...these events MUST never ever degenerate into American style ETHNOCENTRICITY....Good Luck..SINGHA POWER....PLEASE stay humble at all times....Thank you!

Very surprised that SL has finally scraped through. If instead of WI, another team came to the semis, SL would have been destroyed. WI's bowling was weak, so they leaked 160, which was actually not much. Looking at the last two tournaments, I am astonished by the amount of luck SL had. They got all easy matches. And at crucial times, luck has somehow favored them heavily.

Does D/L method factor batsmen at the crease and those to come with respect to their strike rate etc???

I like D/L for 50 over matches but it doesn't work in T20, the statistical modelling should be completely different. With up to 60 duns being commonly enough scored in the last 3 overs how do you equate that with a current run rate?

The games are short enough to do what baseball does, either wait until the rain finishes or continue them the next day. The current method doesn't work.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 23:01 GMT)

It was a rain spoiled show. D/w system is a match killer for the viewer. In fact such matches should be played again. Judging the weather WI should have planned better considering the oncoming hailstorm . They paid for the poor judgement.

Good game SriLanka, I predicted WI would have won. But surely, WI can keep their heads high after good fight and till their progress in SF not like Pak. Pak did same in last Champions trophy, but surely better than that.

Posted by tutorial on (April 3, 2014, 22:47 GMT)

WI.power hitters failed once again, the idea of a finisher was never going to save the team every time....here is the thing, top order batsmen have to bat consistently, Smith has failed again, the only time he scored runs was against the weaker team in the competition (Bangladesh), Samuels was the only stable batsman, he held one end when wickets was falling around him, Russell went along for the free ride that WICB provided for many other players also, WI need batsmen who can ROTATE THE STRIKE more often than hitting boundaries and can score consistently, in this short format(t20) there is no room for inconsistent batsmen, doesn't matter how well the opposition bowl....i am sad to say WI team is full of guys who are NOT up to international cricket standards, if we want the old winning team back we must select the more consistent players.

81 runs in 6 overs with Sammy just in with malinga and Sachithra bowling 4 out of 6 overs is way too difficult. Sl would have won the match easily had it go to 20 overs

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 22:32 GMT)

I agree d&l method is not applicable to t20 at early as 5 overs. Now here's the argument for it. In t20 5 overs means still batting team is in the power play. So obviously run rate is quite high at that stage.lets look at the odi cricket, they apply d&l after 20 overs. By that time 10 overs of power play and good 10 overs of normal cricket has played. So I believe in t20 it is reasonable to apply d&l after 12 overs. 6 overs of powerplay and further 6 overs of regular play. 5 over is way too early. Now in today's game sl have already bowlers 14 overs so it is I'm to apply d&l as we all know getting 81 runs in last 6 overs with Sammy just in is way too

Well Congratulations SL. Bad luck WI. Unlike most of the people here, i think it would have gone either way.SL were 87/3 at the end of 13th over and WI were 76/3 so not much of a difference. I know Mallinga got 2 more overs left but its a T20 anything can happen.. remember the PaK v WI match ajmal is top class bowler but still taken for runs. Couple of good overs and everyone is in pressure. As indian, would like India to win, but don't mind SA winning and taking the cup home.. They have been performing well since 1992 and still haven't won any major comp. Hope it s the TIME

What a wonderful morning to wake up. The brash West Indies have been knocked out by the Sri Lankans in the hit and giggle. Ultimately a side without class will eventually lose to a better team in this format. Unfortunately that happened to the WI during the group stages in the last cup. Congratulations SL. Good luck in the final.

Posted by bobmartin on (April 3, 2014, 21:44 GMT)

Duckworth Lewis should never be used in T20 matches.. How many times have we seen games all but lost going into the final 2 or 3 overs only for someone to cut loose and take the game away from the fielding side. On the other side of the coin we've seen a sudden clutch of wickets fall and a seemingly winning position lost in the last few overs. That's the unpredictability of the T20 format and makes the game what it is.. and that's why Duckworth Lewis is completely inappropriate for T20...

Posted by LankaPuthra on (April 3, 2014, 21:42 GMT)

@gws716 - Welcome to the world of cricket. Yes it is frustrating having to go by anything other than the merits of a fully completed match. I don't understand how D/L is worked out but I believe it takes in to account all the important parameters and variables that contribute to the progress of a team. It then gives a target score. Since a cricket match that has progressed significantly cannot be re-played, this is the next best thing to decide on the outcome, if play is curtailed by weather or any other type of disruption. It is much better than tossing a coin anyway. Enjoy the semi and the final on Sunday. Let's hope services of Messrs Duckworth & Lewis will not be required any more in this tournament.

I hope i never see Samuels playing in west indies 20/20 or one day international never again !How can you have a number four batsman playin for four crucial game facing 110 balls and making 68 runs? Not surprised west indies lost .Goodbye Samuels forever.

SL one of the most consistent teams in World Cups since 1996. Unfortunately they were able to win only one trophy. WC Finalists and Champions 1996, WC Finalists and runners up 2007 and 2011; WC Semi Finalists 2003, World T20 Finalists and runners up 2009 and 2012, World T20 Semi Finalists 2010. Once again World T20 Finalists 2014. This is the time to win a trophy after all.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 21:01 GMT)

This is completely unacceptable in a World Cup game. The remaining overs should have been bowled tomorrow morning. SL had their noses ahead so they will use that to justify the win but its not in the spirit of the game. This is unacceptable.

Posted by ThilankaK on (April 3, 2014, 20:32 GMT)

@ YsaKaru ; Like how you won the world cup in 2011, take the advantage of dew ! Is there any way to decide rain effected game ??? or shall we play it tomorrow ??? or shall we toss ?? or shall we give this match to WI ?? OH MAN ! like LBW , RUN OUT, NO BALL, WIDE BALL there is a rule call Duckworth & Lewis method which in cricket It's same for every one & equal for every one !! It's sad that rain came to the seen & we also like see full match & after wining our cricketers doing GANGNAM STYLE in front of Gayle, Samuel, Bravo & ect !! oh we miss the seen !!! but after scored 160 we won the match before WI bat !!

Posted by Ammo666 on (April 3, 2014, 20:28 GMT)

Vital innings by Mathews to boost the final total well played & well bowled Malinga too. SL through to the final by D/L method even though SL was in a better position later than WI & 81 of 37 was enough hard with four wickets down so WI could collapse hitting big under pressure but who knows how much difference Sammy & Samuels would make in last 6 overs it could have been really interesting again but rain totally ruined WI hope as it was T20 WC semi final so SL was slight lucky as but not so much this time...! by the way that was one of the worst batting by Gayle don't know really what he was up to without even rotating strikes & hitting 1 or 2 boundaries looked far & finally getting out loose...

I am counting on mighty SA to the FINAL not IND even though game is in subcontinent condition for what IND would be mentally prepared...

It goes to show that you can't win a match on paper alone. Gayle, Russell and Samuels totally blew it for WI during this tournament. They should have changed the dynamics of the team for this match. They maybe should should have brought in Rampaul for Russell, who got clobbered and ho has not made any runs at all. And i hate to say it but Gayle seems to be done as far as explosive batting concerned. If you can't explode then rotate and they failed at both. Maybe should have opened with Bravo, let Gayle bat down, bring up Sammy for Marlon, just do something different. But thats its and the better team won today. Congrats Sri Lanka. Well done. Goof effort by WI during the tournament though and great entertainment.

Complete performance. Would not matter if it rains or not. Kusal giving the flying start as always. Great batting by Thiti and Anjela while Dilshan showed some fluidity. Bowlers were great except for first over too. Is this going to be the one we win the final. Lions can do it

Posted by Herath-UK on (April 3, 2014, 19:58 GMT)

Kudos to Sri Lanka what a fantastic win. Asian teams are notorious for flat batting but here you showed the art of wonderful bowling reducing the overinflated batsmen from West Indies to a pulp. Gayle was groping in the dark until his problems were ended superbly by Malinga, Samules was snail pacing & Bravo just flashed to be put out. Sad to see usually smiling Sammy's face wilted. Go Lions go one more hurdle only.Best wishes for the final.

congratulation Srilanka..........Srilanka are missing big trick, Sangakara is not scoring any thing on no 4, they should send him to open and ask him to go from the first ball in final. few quick runs will be better than his nothing in middle order. his wkt falling in middle over quickly after 2nd over brings extra pressure.

D/L method is fare enough to decide match results in case of interruption, because Ideally a Side opening an Innings will comparatively score more at end of innings and a team which chases need to score consistently from the beginning and especially in the initial powerplay.

Posted by CricketingStargazer on (April 3, 2014, 19:26 GMT)

It's a pity to go out on D/L. There is no question that it does not work as well in T20 as in ODIs, but it is a huge improvement on what there was before. Could the West Indies have reached the target? Possibly not, but they would not have fallen 27 runs short. Had he game re-started with a wet outfield and a wetter ball, things could have got very interesting.

Revenge done waiting for final

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 19:04 GMT)

Thanks to the thunderstorm, the Lankans stormed into the Finals. The wayward first over from Kulasekara, prompted Malinga to bring himself in the third over and one would have presumed that he would have been thrashed but something else was in store for the sluggish Gayle and Smith, who had been clueless in Senanayaka's spin bowling

But Malinga's 2 quick &timely wickets made Samuels following an unusual lethargic technique [ comparing the heroics of Samuels in the last World Cup Finals against the Lankans ] putting undue pressure on Bravo, who had managed a decent score. When WI was in dire straits, even the other players in Sammy etc, could not have turned the match in their favour ! However the thunderstorm came as the cropper to Lanka's advantage.

So the World Event is left out with one ex-champion in us and the other two eyeing for their first ever maiden venture as World Champion in 2014.Let us play SA our natural game in the subcontinental pitch and derive the advantage !

Posted by chat.asanka on (April 3, 2014, 19:02 GMT)

now its too late to do a postmortem. after reading this comments i feel still there are some people who can't digest the bitter truth. few of them still fight with "if". according to them 'IF' WI knows about the weather why they didn't maintain there run rate. 'IF' they have so much big hitters why they drag it to the last moment. try to appreciate on others sacrifices. don't under estimate this win. ya.. i know D/L method is not going with T20 cricket. but any team will have to face this kind of situation like WI did today. so no point of making any argument against the D/L.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 19:00 GMT)

Only change I might consider is for Mahela to open, Thrimanna to take his place and Dlii to drop down. NJ @ LA

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 18:58 GMT)

Marlon Samuels is a huge liability for WI. Yet again, he failed to keep the scoreboard ticking, using up almost overs for a measly 18 runs.

When will the selectors realize that he must be omitted from the short formats? Of course, others were also remiss today, notably Gayle, managing only 3 in 13 deliveries. Perhaps, they may have pulled it off had the rains stayed away for another half hour.

On this day, Sri Lanka were the beneficiaries of a collaboration between Mother Nature and the D/L system. Have WI learned anything from this? No! They have an ignominious history of bungling D/L targets, as has happened in match played at Providence Stadium, Guyana, a few years ago.

Posted by IftikarUK on (April 3, 2014, 18:56 GMT)

Sauruv Ganguly said in a previous game, this cricket game is a great leveller. How true is that. One day you're on top of the world and next day you come crushing down. WI exit the tournament the day after doing a victory dance. The moral of the story is it's not over until fat lady has sung. Hope next 2 games are not rained out and DL doesn't come into play. Both games are mouthwatering and let the best team win. This T20 seems to be all about how you turn up on the day, manage to stay focused throughout the game, and a bit of good fortunes.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 18:47 GMT)

I wonder why Duckworth lewis should come into play in a 20 over match. Can't they replay the entire match in under 3 hours? Not great exhibition for T20 cricket. Why cannot they plan properly with all the modern technology available and not schedule cricket matches on rainy months? I would like to believe that Cricket matches in the future would be decided on the field rather that by some weird math calculation.

Posted by Skywalker1977 on (April 3, 2014, 18:43 GMT)

Top game Sri Lanka. Would have come out on top either way. Well done.

Posted by Rambo88 on (April 3, 2014, 18:42 GMT)

Just like i predicted Seekuga came for Thisara and Chandimal stayed out. This current team is the way to go for the finals.

I think south Africa will be a test for the indians. Specially with players like AB, Faf and Steyn south africa has a good chance to beat the indians.

I personally like if India comes into the finals with Sri lanka because it would be a great contest and also if sri lanka wins it will be something they will cherish for a long time specially beating India.

So lets hope for a Sri lanka vs India final, But Tomorrow game is gonna be tough one to decide, lot of people might say its a walk in the park for India, But i think its gonna be one tough game for India, this is the game that will really test them and specially the middle order. This south african team has a good bowling line up that will trouble the indian batsmen specially the fast bowlers.

Lets See who the lankans gonna be facing on sunday night. TILL THEN THE LIONS WILL BE WATING !!!!

ROOAAARRRRRR!!!

Congratulations SL. Take a bow boys, duckworth or jerry lewis not withstanding. Now for the big one with the south Africans as I'm sure they'll do the Indians.Irrespective of who comes to the final SL has to have plans in place for either team.Sanga is horribly out of form and if not for the fact that this will be his last t20 game, should make way for another batter with Chandimal doing the keeping.SL has got the Asia cup and now for the t20 and b4 long the plum-- the world cup itself.GO THE LIONS---DO IT JUST AS YOU DID IT TO THE TIGERS.JAYA HO!!!!

Posted by JG2704 on (April 3, 2014, 18:35 GMT)

Re D/L - I dont think it's a particularly unsatisfactory method of deciding a result but what is sad is that

1 - There are no reserve days - esp for the semis

2 - If they can't fit a reserve day in would it not be too much to ask for them to start earlier - like half the group games were? The 2 DL results were both in the day/night matches. I'm not sure if that's coincidence but surely if you start the game earlier you have more time to play with and surely without a reserve day this would be beneficial to everyone

Re DL - I still maintain that you should be a certain amount above the Par score to get the win if the game is only a certain number of overs old. As it is - while it would still have been possible for WI to reach the semis I don't see that (if you are to calculate a par score) WI would be near any unbiased version and 27 runs ahead is a fairly significant lead

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 18:34 GMT)

WI openers lose another game again! With the fielding restrictions in the 1st six overs want to see Bravo and Sammy open the batting. If the out early so be it. But i'm willing to have them hit the ball over to begin and let the so called specialist batsmen continue down the middle order and have them win the match if they must.

Posted by St.John on (April 3, 2014, 18:23 GMT)

Wonderful win Sri Lanka! but this match could have gone either way had the storm not interfered. WI usually explode in the death overs and Darren Sammy is always there hitting sixers and fours at the end. Sri Lanka must get 2 or 3 batsmen like Kusal Perera in the near future for T20. They can't always depend on their bowlers who often bowl their hearts out after their top batsmen fail. Sangakarra still cannot master T20. Waiting for him to deliver a fast and furious T20 innings is like waiting for Godot.

Well it's sad that two of my favourite teams where playing each other for the final spot, hard luck West Indies but you have won this cup before, congratulations to Lankans,it is yet another chance for u to finally lift the trophy and Hopefully you'll. A few points, don't know why Gayle keeps blocking,he only looks good when he's attacking, don't know who told him to block rather getting out. Gayle you're a power hitter and it is ur strength not a weakness, you shouldn't abandon ur strength and dont try to change ur game Brother. Your aggression is ur strength and u need to attack the bowlers, certainly a bad patch of ur career but hopefully you'll come out good.

SL won through DL :-p and natural storm saved from carebian storm . Its very unfair that most important match decided by DL. note that last two match of WI.They won those matches from last 2-3 over. They do have the potential to change the momentum .But today rain stopped them not SL.As WI fan not accepting this SL win

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 18:15 GMT)

I had earlier predicted a WI win in this semi final against Sri Lanka. My rational was Gayle to bat a long innings and take care of Herath, obviously he played a poor shot against Malinga. So from there on and after Samuels sluggish show there was no way there would have been a repeat of the 2012 performance.

Rain storm or not Gayle and Smith let WI down. You must keep the D/L method in mind at all times at this stage of the game, unless Bangladesh has no weather man to report the forecast?

Posted by ksquared on (April 3, 2014, 18:08 GMT)

It's so funny to read comments by INDs (Don't even want to call them cricket fans because they are not) saying SL were lucky. SL would have easily won this match had 20 overs been played. Brain less cricket by WI and they deserve to lose on that account alone for all the bragging and trashing WI had only two inform batsmen Bravo and Sammy. Bravo was back in the hut. Samuels couldn't even hit the ball off the square let alone out of the ground. Sammy is a slogger there was absolutely no guarantee he would have clicked. I don't see WI getting anywhere near 160 with the best death bowling attack in the tournament. So another Final beckons!!!!!!

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 18:07 GMT)

Every team has one explosive opener except India and that's gonna cost them the match. Unless one of the openers go for attack in the first 6 overs there is no chance for India to win. May be the spinners might bail them out again against SA but not against SL in the finals. I think Sanga & Mahela deserves a worldcup to thier name after such a wonderful carreer and 4 missed oppurtunities in the previous editions. I am saying this as an hardcore Indian fan. Best of luck to India & SL.

How can he "and the required rate may have been beyond even Sammy's rapid blade," hasn't he been watching the competition before. 84 runs in five overs in the last game. The in form batsman is Sammy. The game could have still gone anyway from here. But, the luck and the weather was with Sri Lanka, any final from these four teams would be interesting. India may be on top of their game, but in T20, it is hard to predict a final.

SL Have been in 5 ICC finals now 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012 & 2014, and no win in any of them! Come on SL boys, we as Cricket lovers want you to win! They have always been the uncrowned champions for me! It will be a fairy tale send off for Jayawardene and Sangakkara. Get the job done this time around!

Greetings from a Pakistan fan.

As a fan of this Gentleman's game im always happy to see the friendship between pak and sl and now i see how bangladesh fans support sl. Asian teams got each others backs. Good to see that.

Posted by ultrasnow on (April 3, 2014, 17:56 GMT)

Indian fan here, Sri Lanka were worthy winners. Take nothing away from them for winning via the DL method. WI batting second with the threat of rain looming were at a distinct advantage about how to pace the chase. Alas! they came up with an unprofessional batting display and deserved to crash out.

best wishes for Sri lankan lions for t20 champion....

Posted by JustIPL on (April 3, 2014, 17:55 GMT)

Sri lanka deserved to win by pulling back after that first 17 runs over. Windies were losing anyway and rain gods ensured there are no false hopes and SL will win the cup from now on.

wish it could have finished with out rain interruption, v may have witnessed a game full of dareen sammy blitz toward the end and who knows

I have a sneaking suspicion that south Africa are gonna beat India and get in to the finals.

Posted by bllas on (April 3, 2014, 17:52 GMT)

It's lucky windies, they were no where in the match, yet god gave them a chance to say something even. Now all can say SL win just because of Rain. But the truth is in last match there was a bravo to play with Sammy(if sammy could really repeat today) but today Bravo is already gone and samuels no in touch. No chance to windies

In T20 you cannot say the better side wins. Its all luck on that day for any team. Country like Australia,NZ, England do not focus much on T20, instead they focus on 1Day and Test matches which has the true talent showcase.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:45 GMT)

Man, I'm a disappointed WI fan. Pity the game ended like this. But I guess the WI team knew about the situation with the rain and stuff. So yeah, best of luck to Sri Lanka!

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:44 GMT)

Gayle is the one to be blamed, 3 runs from 13 balls is definitely not his game. I still feel West Indies would have made it had the game been completed as according to me Sammy is the best finisher (along with MSD). I really wanted to see West Indies in the final but bad luck to them and good luck to Sri Lanaka as they deserve to be in the final.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:42 GMT)

Even if we forget DL & make a simple comparison of scores by overs, still SL is ahead of WI at the end of 13.5 overs. And I'm really proud of Sammy who is a true gentleman and a capatin capable of appreciating even his opponent and he still can express the trust on his players. So do Angi who was humble enough to give the due respect to Narine in the post match presentation. another true gentleman of game is Mr. McCollum ( its not like some other captains who are not gentleman enough to appreciate his opponents talents)

If Pak was in semis, SL would have been thrashed by Pak. Luck saved the SL team. But it's going to be the same old story, SL enters finals and gets thrashed by the opponents. LOL

Wonderful tribute to the big 3 of sri lankan cricket by getting into the finals. All three have performed below par so far but SL are on the way returning victorious from Bangladeshi soil after winning Asia cup, T20 Worldcup and off course series against BD. SL have been in BD for so long such that they look like BD national team. SL can use that experience to beat anyone in the finals.

Posted by yorkslanka on (April 3, 2014, 17:36 GMT)

well done to SL, feel bad about getting to the final this way as its a shame for the WIndies to lose out to DL..bring on another final and hopefully we can go further than last time..even if we lose, as long as we give as much as we can, our loyal fans cant ask anymore of you, always proud to be Sri Lankan

Posted by ankurj6 on (April 3, 2014, 17:35 GMT)

Many congratulations to Sri lanka. you deserve this win.but in case tomrw if the IND vs SA match is not played then IND will reach in the finals then it will IND vs SL in the finals :)..

I bet ya, Windies would've chased these runs down or lose trying! They have big hearts, sorry the rain ha to spoil the show!

Posted by ProdigyA on (April 3, 2014, 17:34 GMT)

The match was evenly poised. You could SL were ahead but we know the firepower of WI and they bat really deep. They smashed 80 odd runs from 30 balls of Pak bowling which is better than SL. DL method is really pathetic. But anyhow lucky to be in the Finals.

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (April 3, 2014, 17:32 GMT)

Although D/L is too ridiculous to apply in this format, it probably wouldn't have made the difference in the end as WI started accelerating a bit late. I would have given 70-30 in favor of SL at this stage. Tough on WI but thats how T20 is. So congrats to SL.

Sri lanka played extremely well.. We should all congratulate Sri lanka on their excellent fielding display and their fight back in last few overs. WI have themselves to blame. They let SL score in last few overs, Poor captaincy by sammy.too much arrogance and over confidence that he can beat all the remaining 3 teams even before finishing the semi-finals. It is insult to rest of the 3 teams. If there is any negative point in WI team then it is sammy. Even in game against Pak ..it was D bravo who hit 46 out of 26 balls and provided the momentum first. In the end better team won and rightly so. SL won this because of better cricket. WI on the other hand just couldn't score of SL bowling. 13.5 overs samuels couldn't do anything. Sammy should follow his own preaching. You can talk as much as you want in the end team that plays better cricket wins. Sammy should understand that. 81 from 37 balls. SL team had the odds in their favor before the rain. Congrats SL team on reaching finals

Posted by nilb on (April 3, 2014, 17:25 GMT)

Before 96 teams laughed at SL cricket. Now look at the number of World cup and world T20 finals, and one world cup triumph. Not bad for a Minnow tiny island nation eh? And still some people use the word "minnow" is an insult, without knowing the history. It's shameful for the big fish to fail and "minnows" has nothing to loose.

Posted by GrindAR on (April 3, 2014, 17:23 GMT)

WI usual way of gearing up and down did not work well. 17 runs from 1st over meant a positive approach from WI batsmen, but both CG and DS did not show any intent after that. I don't say the bowling was that tight... they could have rotated the strike any stayed in the game atleast 20-25 runs more than where they were when the rain slashed out... It was more of a non-intent than anything else that made this match so one sided than it otherwise would be. If they would have made to final, we could pretty much say the title would have been theirs.... Because, WI play the finals completely out-of-box than their usual... they most of the time the game would have been a beauty to watch.... So, we are gonna miss that this time.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:23 GMT)

Although, I was supporting SL, but D/L is the most unfair and stupid rule in the game of cricket. I don't know why the teams cannot resume the game next day.

Posted by LankaPuthra on (April 3, 2014, 17:17 GMT)

Commiserations WI! Congratulations SL! I was quietly confident about the result, especially after the SL captain, Mahela. ..sorry. . .Malinga, won the toss. This time Malinga knew exactly who was in his ranks, and that's always a good start. It was good to reach 160 at least for the purpose of applying score board pressure. Kulasekara's first over was a metaphorical red rag to a bull, albeit a disciplined and determined bull represented by the SL bowling squad. The result would not have been different if the game carried on - but in this game anything could have happened. Unlucky WI, well played.

As a proud West Indian, my heart is full since we defeated the tournament favourites Aus and Pak. Too bad to lose out to rain since I always back Sammy, Russell and the others to get 80 in 6 overs- we did it against Pak last game. Anyway Sri Lankans better do all their celebrating and posting excuses now, because come Sunday- India will destroy them and they will end up losing another world finals!

Posted by A-Gunnie on (April 3, 2014, 17:15 GMT)

SL alway find a way to get to the party but not sure if they will take it.Russell bowl two too many overs in the late stage for the Windies that may have cost them the game...what were you thinking Sammy as you could have bowl yourself instead.

Posted by rk_ks on (April 3, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

Sri lanka through to the Finals again... 2007, 2010, 2011,2012, 2014.... What a team? They lost 4 among those 5 and how is this world class. World class teams are aussies during 2000-2008 and windies in the early 70's and 80's. SL is just another overhyped team of current generation like India.

Posted by wapuser on (April 3, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

This was such an awful way to decide a finalist

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:13 GMT)

West Indies scored 17 off the first over - that too from very bad bowling by Kulasekara - and scored only 17 in the next six overs! :O :O :O

I highly doubt West Indies could've pulled this off, to be totally honest, with two overs each from Prasanna, Senanayake and Malinga left - two spinners and the best death bowler. They probably would have come close but I don't think they could have went over the final hurdle. Darren Sammy, too, admitted that it would've been a difficult job today.

Again, well done to Sri Lanka, and let's win the final, too! :)

Posted by rajithwijepura on (April 3, 2014, 17:12 GMT)

WI deserved this thrashing for their over hyped behavior in last few games. As a SL i wish India will make in to the final so that we could complete our revenge by beating them in the final. Well played Lions... Lets make the final roar on Sunday. Grrrrrrrrr!!

Rain saved Sri Lanka from the impending late onslaugth. To those who believe that SL position was unreachable would best ask Pakistan and Australia. But that's the way the game goes so anyway congrats to Sri Lanka, all the best in the finals!

Thanks for all pakistani friends who wish our team. You all are amazing friends both on and off the cricketing arena. Hopefully this time lions will pull off a win at the final and show their talent. They are the boys who are coming from a tiny island with giant ability.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:11 GMT)

Sri Lanla has shown real consistency in cricketing talent as a nation. They have come to finals of all FIVE world cups continuously. This is tremendous talent even though unlucky. No nation has done this.

Posted by CricketGuru365 on (April 3, 2014, 17:11 GMT)

I just despise D/L method. Its not like WI should've won the match, but you can never predict especially in T20 where things can change drastically in the last overs. Anyways Srilanka has a poor history playing in ICC tournament finals and that's just pure fact so not super excited about them getting lucky today.

Dropping perera was the best decision! he failed in both batting and bowling and we don't need him

@Nuwan Lorensuhewa Ur wishes will be granted and hunting ground battle will end in the same way as it ended in WC 2011.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:10 GMT)

I don't think D/L did difference about the winner coz we had 2 for malinga 2 for sachithra 1 for kula & 3 for mathews left to cover 6 overs

Posted by Blackholesun on (April 3, 2014, 17:10 GMT)

WI has already lost the game even before rain stop. One cannot always make 80-85 runs in last 5-6 overs. WI are responsible for their own downfall.

Gayle is a non-performer in really big matched. Samuels was out of form throughout the tournament.

But Anyways Congrats to Sri Lanka fot making it to the successive finals. This time it seems to be their cup, may be heaven's gift for the big 3 of Sri Lankan cricket for their contribution to the Sri Lankan cricket !

Posted by KingOwl on (April 3, 2014, 17:09 GMT)

WI are hugely talented, but they use more brawn than brain. The risk of thunderstorm was there, and they didn't plan ahead for it. Or they did, but couldn't execute. Either way, it was nothing to do with luckThe great teams create luck. The losers blame luck. I think Sammy knows the mistakes they did. He is an outstanding guy, IMO.

Posted by mzm149 on (April 3, 2014, 17:08 GMT)

Congrats Sri Lanka!! You deserved it the most considering how you played throughout the tournament. Relived that hit miss West Indies is out.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:08 GMT)

Only three times that other teams have successfully chased down 150+ against Lanka. Indian two times and other being the England recently in this tournament. West Indies have failed every time. Anything could have happened today ,yes. But it you want to compare and contrast that what's in it for you. And that is apart form the fact that Sri Lanka have made in to 5 ICC Finals in last seven years.

Posted by kapsitash on (April 3, 2014, 17:07 GMT)

Lucky win for SL. Teams take a confidence leap from semi finals going into finals, but perhaps such hinder to their confidence presuming they don't deserve to play the final among their players will play pivotal role in final.Hard luck WI and Sammy.

Good old cricket. A game that used to last 5 days has now been shortened to 3 hours and they need an idiotic MATH FORMULA to come up with a result??? have these guys heard of a reserve day to make up for weather contingencies.

Posted by BandulaG on (April 3, 2014, 17:06 GMT)

after being there in five finals on the trot, SL deserves an ICC major cup this time around @ least in the names of the three "ageing worriers" namely Sanga,Mahela & Dilshan!!!

Congratulations to Sri Lanka. They deserves to be the champion. All the best wishes to Sri Lanka for the final. Very disappointed to not see Chandimal in the XI although the decision taken by a very professional management and also for cricketing reasons. Any chance for Chandi to play in final?...

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:06 GMT)

Im not sure D/L is really appropriate for a T20 match. I mean, congrats to SL for the win, but u never know what could happen in T20. In the last match with Pak, WI were 84/5 in 5 overs before smashing 82 runs in the next 5 overs. Admittedly, they batted first, but there's no way D/L could predict that. I just think that this result was really unfair for WI. They really should have planned backup days for knockout matches.

Posted by BigINDFan on (April 3, 2014, 17:05 GMT)

ICC does not think through back up plans for world cups. Have a reserve day for the semis and final or start the game early or continue next day. It is pathetic to use D/L for T20. Of course SL would have won easily had the full quota of overs were possible but you never know with some big hitters down the order. Ask Ajmal and Gul. Anyways good luck SL. Let's hope it is Ind-SL final.

Congratulations to Sri Lanka, my 2nd favorite team for getting to the final, and in my opinion, even without the rain they would have won by the way they were playing, well done and thoroughly deserved, truly hope you win the cup and give a good send off to Jayawardana and Sangakara. Commiserations to West Indies, the rain robbed their chance to get a victory but they should have been aware that it was going to rain and got the run rate up for D/L, they simply couldn't. Go Lions, all the best.

The rain gods saved the WI from a humiliating defeat by Sri Lanka

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:02 GMT)

Duckworth Lewis leaves a poor taste in the mouth. Windies were never going to make it today as the SL batters, bowlers and fielders were excellent. Dilshan fielded like a true champion saving boundaries running like a "Bolt". Matthews as usual excelled in the last two overs. He is the best finisher in the game today. The Windies team is more modest than most of the other teams, but they too started playing "mind games" before the match in a more diplomatic and subtle way. The Sri Lankan team has to be admired for their great behaviour on and off the field. Spectators love their "brand" of cricket. It was also nice to listen to Shane Warne backing Sri Lanka after scoring 160 runs. Hope that Sri Lanka wins the T20 World Cup on Sunday. Niranjan Samarasekera. Melbourne

Posted by wapuser on (April 3, 2014, 17:02 GMT)

Duck worth-Lewis I unsuitable for this form of the game. WI hit 82 off the last 5 against Pakistan, there was every chance thy they could have won this. Why couldn't Friday have been a reserve day? X

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:02 GMT)

Gayle and Samuels played without any pride and conviction - Gayle is the bigger culprit and has been useless the whole series. They both placed too much pressure on the other batamen. The bowlers were magnificent.

It's not that it matters but SL didin't plan to with with heavy rain and D/L method. That's never the Sri Lankan Style!!! Honestly I'd rather want to watch the full game than winning with D/L but what to do we with Mother nature!!!

Finally to anyone who bragging about our win because of the rain please remember that it's not that we are lucky it's just WI are Unlucky!!!

As a team I am truly respect WI the most other than Our Sri Lanka team because WI players really are great human beings that any other teams except Sri Lanka!!!!

Yes, Yes our team did not win all the finals, but no other team can match the consistent achievements of our team in T20. finalists in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014. Go Lions.... you can beat South Africans again.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 17:00 GMT)

Well... Sri Lanka are in YET ANOTHER final; hope they can do it this time for the retiring LEGENDS. :)

West Indies never looked like they got themselves going and Sammy was the only one who could've saved them - but what's the guarantee?? West Indies batsmen were batting too slow and they knew rain was on its way, so should've got going very early...

Sri Lanka batted well (except the middle order) to get to a not intimidating but defendable total and bowled extremely well to keep WI batsmen quiet. Really mad at Dilshan for getting himself and Mahela run-out though --- most of the Sri Lankan batsmen gifted their wickets.

Congratulations, Lions! Let's do this for Mahela and Sanga!!! <3

Posted by Cricsnake on (April 3, 2014, 16:59 GMT)

Well done team SL ! Anyway it's not a happy thing to win a T20I with the help of D/L. However SL is clearly on their way to a huge victory. I'm pretty much sure we could have limited them around 120-130 if all the overs being bowled unless our bowlers do utter blunders. Well played Windies, u gave us a good fight. SL bowlers did superbly & KJP, Thiri, Mathews all did exceptionally well. The issue is with big 3. Dilshan scored but a slow striker. Mahela is the man behind Malinga but unfortunate with bat. Sanga lost his form. In the final we should open with KJP & Mahela. Thiri should play at No.03. If Dilshan & Sanga play they should come down the order. Final is the biggest challenge. I hope India will be there. Good Luck to Ind & SA for the next semi & Hope SL will do their best at Finals as we already lost 4 WC finals in a raw. Cheers !

as a srilankan, much appreciate Pakistanis support.be honest guys.SL did a great job, give the credit to them.there was no way WI could win this match.

Posted by KingOwl on (April 3, 2014, 16:57 GMT)

SL is an amazing team. I know I am biased. But their performances in big tournaments have been unmatched in recent years, I believe. True, they haven't won the finals, but overall performances have been brilliant and highly professional. I think this win rectified the mistake of the last T20 final. There, SL were clearly the superior team. Yet, WI won, under freakish circumstances. Here, the teams were better matched, but SL won easily thanks to freakish conditions. I think WI had no real chance even without the rain. But it became too easy in the end. 27 runs in D/L is huge!

Posted by vallavarayar on (April 3, 2014, 16:57 GMT)

WI probably didn't take the rain into account when chasing. Facepalm!

Im new to Cricket, but this Duckworth/Lewis Method is awful! Cricket will never grab a foothold in new places if this is the way important matches get decided. Too bad for the fans...

ok so now it's 100% sure who will be the runners up. Waiting for the result of SA vs India to know who is the winner

Well played SL . Congrats and thanks to WI as well. However would have preferred to win without the D/L formula. But WI were a bit too slow in their run rate and Samuels /Gayle were responsible . It goes to show that you need to take singles, 2s etc and cannot depend only on 4s & 6s . We will meet SA or India in the finals . Hopefully no rain

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:55 GMT)

We started very well, but their offspinner bowled very well to Gayle and Smith. From there on, we were behind the eight ball."

Terrific cricket by Sri Lanka facing all the challenges & winning.People talked of batting marvels of Gayle,Smith Samuels Bravo who all wilted to Sri Lanka without a whim. What a superb over by Malinga taking those two wickets & Kula taking Bravo. We're not a few spinners wonder as India to tell the truth, one day it is our spinners who shine then the fast /seamers on the other day.Samuel innings was snail pace so was Gayle Lankans did not give freebies .Most promising is how the young brigade took charge with no contribution from Sanga & Mahela etc.One more game the Trophy is ours.I would say even if we lose the final the most entertaining & fighting unit has been Sri Lanka.Well done Lions!

Posted by DwightR on (April 3, 2014, 16:53 GMT)

I agree that DL in a T20 in a farce but all teams have to deal with it...regardless SL were well in control all throughout and deserved to win...Well done Lions! another finals..now lets finish the job!

marlon samuels should get out of team he had chance to do for his team but he didn't ,i think west indies have won the match if Darren Sammy came befor that marlon.......

A sad end to the all important Match.A Match is not finished until the last ball is bowled.Sammy and Andre Russell were still their but fate was not on their side.Happy to see Srilankan Fans cheering such bail out a victory.First to be placed in an group where nobody plays spin well and getting a bye in the semi final is some luck. But only true champions and not the luckier ones can win finals, winning the game in this way will only adds to the feeling of guiltiness and undeservingness to the team which plays critical role in big matches.Whoever from India-South Africa gets in to the final will have a clear mind that they deserve to be in this place and could well have an edge.Srilanka would have been happier if they have fought their way to the victory against thist WI team and would have made them mentally strong with favourite tag going into final.Seems it will work other way around.

Keep Chandimal in the dugout and keep winning matches. That is the equation. Nowadays Thiri is doing sooooo well. Go lions Go and bring back the 1996 memories

Posted by anton1234 on (April 3, 2014, 16:52 GMT)

I think Gayle and Samuels have both become a liability. Gayle puts Smith under way too much pressure by deliberately blocking out balls, forcing Smith to take undue risk. Gayle also gives off a really lazy vibes the field and his running between wickets. He has been sensational for the WI during his career but has surely now passed his best. I think it's for him to retire to T20 franchise leagues and earn his retirement in those.

Posted by Aroundthelegsgoogly on (April 3, 2014, 16:51 GMT)

All that effort to stage a match that is just 20 overs each, even with that scenario the organisers cant stay just a half hour or an hour longer to finish the game. We'll never know what the true outcome would have been with WI they were just about gearing up for their climax. SL makes it to final and of course they deservedly do so, the momentum being behind them after the Asia Cup win. You've got to say are now favourites.

India on the other hand have been getting better each game, Dhoni is a big game player as is Kohli. So SL should not get too comfortable in their kits. Good luck all remaining teams.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:51 GMT)

To all the haters saying sri lanka won by luck, let me tell you something. you may be lucky once or twice, but to get to 6 world cup finals, that's called consistency, not luck. The D/L method is the accepted method to decide the outcome whether you like it or not and if the west indies were smart enough, they would have taken that factor into consideration as well. At the end of the day, the better team, the smarter team won.

Hard luck for WI, Lets be honest as a SL fan I don't deny that WI had slim chance to win this match but odds were always in favour of SL, Specially with the brilliant fielding that saved 10-15 runs... only chance WI had was for miracle knock by one of the players.. but same kind of performance could have been expected from SL bowler too. so Hard luck to WI & Congrats to SL for playing to win...

Duckworth lewis should not be used in T20 matches.....80 to win off around 7overs is not impossible for this WI team(or any other team), as we have seen in the past couple matches....i've never been a supporter of using this system for T20 matches and once again I am unhappy with the result. Tough luck WI, but also good game to SL and good luck in the finals.

Very unfortunate for WI cricket.A reserve day should have been there or atleast a super over.SL gets lucky.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:45 GMT)

Better to advance the starting time if the rain is on the cards in the in the next few evenings. Even today 30 minutes early start allowed to send 13.5 overs. Otherwise it could have been less than 10 overs. SL played the correct eleven for this game.( that does not mean the same eleven will play the next game).

Posted by John_Geo on (April 3, 2014, 16:45 GMT)

Even if the rain had not come down, Sri Lanka would have won. SL definitely has a better chance with India in the final.

Here is the dilemma for Sri Lanka though - Keep Sangakkara for the final and dilute the team and probably lose the game or drop Sangakkara, spoil his farewell but have a fair chance in the final with another batsman.

If Sangakkara is as patriotic as Chandimal, he should opt out of the final. 20-20 is really not for him.

Posted by Saadcricketlover on (April 3, 2014, 16:44 GMT)

Unpredictable west indies, They score slowly and then accelarate in the last 5 overs. As a neutral i would've wished to see the full match. Now i will wish for Srilanka to win. They really deserve to win this. They are hardworking and this is there third final with no cup. Best of luck Srilanka. From a Pakistani fan from Canada.

Posted by rajcan on (April 3, 2014, 16:38 GMT)

SL selectors are doing injustice to Tissara for very long time. He is as good as Mathews or even better. But, Mathews has been getting enough chances and he is not afraid of being dropped. Tissara is a very good batsman and very dangerous if he is given more time to play. He has been always sent into face very few balls; all he can do is swing the bat. Today, Dilshan and Thirimane together played more than 12 overs for the combined average strike rate of little over 100. Tissara and Kulasekara should be sent up in the order for T20 to get some runs on board. We already have too many batsman who have become more of defensive players than attacking, Sanga, Mahela, Thirimane, Mathews.....

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:31 GMT)

WI managed to get just 80 in 13.5 overs. From remaining overs, Malinga had 2, Senanayake had 2. Plenty of other bowling options were remaining. There was hardly any chance for WI to win. Do not talk about Sammy and Samuels. What about Gayle, Simmons,Smith and Bravo. Not good enough to stay in the team? Mahela will have another chance to play a memorable inings against India or South Africa.

Posted by NP_NY on (April 3, 2014, 16:27 GMT)

@IndianCoolGuy: Well said. A T20 match decided by DL is a farce. Even a super over makes more sense. SL did have the upper hand but like you said, these T20 matches can go to the last ball and especially with WI, one never knows, they can even score 100 in the last 5-6 overs on their day.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:26 GMT)

Well well yet again Lankans are in the final of ICC WCT20. This will be our turn for sure. More importantly give that magical exit to MJ and KS. SA or IND no matter who is. Preferred INDIA though.

being an SL supporter, i wanted PAK to go through the semis. If SL goes through, it will play india in Final n we all know wat the result will be. India will win the title. For some reason, i think coz of fear, indian bowling line up becomes like 2000-2004 australian bowling line up(india has one of the weakest bowling line ups) n we post a tiny total which is trashed off by the mighty indian batting line up. indian batting line up can chase any total on any day.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:14 GMT)

@rk_ks , do you have to be this negative? Or are you talking about Narine as he is a world class spinner and didn't pick up a single wicket either. It's about the team performance. The pressure Herath built from one side helped other bowlers pickup wickets.

Posted by NkSad on (April 3, 2014, 16:13 GMT)

The WI bowling was as I thought it was going to be when bowling first, Santokie is not an opening bowler, he is not a wicket taking bowler either, from what I have seen in regional cricket, he is good at adding pressure and maintain it, but not creating it. He is a good 3 or 4 bowler not that opening bowler, like Rampaul. I just feel Rampaul needed to play where over Santokie or Russell. Its not over tho, if the rain stop, WI can and I think will hit their way out of trouble, like they did last time they faced SL.

Posted by Ultimate_Cricket on (April 3, 2014, 16:12 GMT)

Admit SL is the best on field today... And they will win the WC this time for sure.. What a balance team.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:10 GMT)

Gents, Toss and dew will work either side. Dont say slk is doing well by luck. If one player does not contribute other one will do. Thats is the team work n thats why we have 20 overs. Today mahela n sanfa failed n otgers did. If one really wants one to one the we should play one man cricket with one over, rather play wrestline

WIs are unpredictable, and Pak were pkaying like tensed team.

Absorbing thecwin n lose is good sportsmanship. Everybody can not win everytime

Posted by dayansd786 on (April 3, 2014, 16:09 GMT)

To akramk,

One dream is enough for you at a time. Don't do two dreams to at same time.. Like Pakistan come into semis (1st dream ) and then winning against sri lanka.

Don't forgot West Indies is better than you guys that's why they win over Pakistan by 84 runs.. not a small margin..

Posted by IndianCoolGuy on (April 3, 2014, 16:09 GMT)

It the matches are decided with D/L method even in t20, then there is no meaning. D/L is suitable for 50 over match, but not to t20. Every one accepts that in t20, until the last ball bowled, no one guaranty the win. many matches have proved many times. Suppose if batting second team has to score 15 runs in 6 balls, and 9 wickets down and a batsmen on strike is like DHONI or MAXWELL or Sammy or Bravo, then it is still possible to win but according to D/L its a looser. At least for semis, they should have given a reserve day, or why can't they start the match 1 hour early? Seriously the ICC has to think about this. If there is a possibility for rain, then at least they have to start 1 hour early. 1 hour is enough for bowling 15 overs in t20. Till now it was a good t20 WC, but at the end, if rain prevents playing complete match, then its waste of money, waste of time, waste of whole series. Win the match by playing maximum possible overs and get the trophy. that satisfies every one.

Posted by KANCHANA623 on (April 3, 2014, 16:09 GMT)

We Srilankans definitely support Pakistan, akramk seems to have clearly lost his senses after loosing to west indies.

Posted by sriyan76 on (April 3, 2014, 16:07 GMT)

Yousuf AHmad, Sri Lanka never proclaimed themselfs as the best bowling attack.Every body else including all the experts like Ricky Ponting says so, and the bowling today proved it again,

Posted by chamauk on (April 3, 2014, 16:07 GMT)

@akramk: lol I think you are screaming in pain... Don't blame everything on Luck.. if that is the case then even you and I also go and play like them given that we are luck... If you dont bowl well and bat well obviously you are going to fail.. WI is a good side.. But the worst part is that Pakistan couldn't handle the pressure.. SO you can start praying for good luck next time around....

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:07 GMT)

Gayle and Samuels lost game for the West Indies. Gayle has been next to useless for entire series. He is a wonderful slogger, plain and simple, and is not able to play any other way _ he placed a lot of pressure on the others by trying to defend his wicket like a test batsman, which he is not. Samuels played a similar game, and is a better bataman but obviously out of touch. They should both have been dropped but probably the WI coach felt that they had to persist with them because of their potential! There has been too much pressure put on the brilliant Sammy (yes, a "brilliant" captain, leader and fighter unlike moody, lethargic Gayle) and Dwayne Bravo. The WI bowlers have all been magnificent. So, mediocre batting display by Gayle and Samuels has let us down. The coach and manager should have been more adventurous and replaced them.

Posted by NP_NY on (April 3, 2014, 16:07 GMT)

The match was just at the stage where WI typically explode. With Sammy and Samuels at the crease and with Russel and Ramdin to come, 13 runs per over is gettable. SL just got lucky with the toss first and then with the hailstorm. Bad luck West Indies! It seems this is the only way SL can beat you.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:06 GMT)

i predicted that the team which bats first will win.well played sri lanka to reach 160 after losing 3 quick wickets and we will join you in finals very soon.be prepared for another world cup final defeat.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:06 GMT)

No body talks about Sri Lankans talent here. True Sri Lanka does not have big hitters who are looking to hit the every ball out of the park but they have a good cricketing sense (good brains) to win over the physical powers of others. Guys this game not only about power hitting (physical powers) but mental strength, experience and intelligence also do play a big part.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 16:06 GMT)

It might be curtains for WI as the rain is pouring down heavily. wI are 27 runs behind as per DL equation

its obvious that someone has confused Gayle. He suddenly thinks he is a touch player. Yow, your strength is your ability to use your hands to hit through the ball. Why change it after so many successful years? Gayle, its back to what has worked!! Keep it simple!!!

no way to WI this time....it was in 2012.........now 2014......cong's sri lanka team..keep it up with T20 world cup 2014 FINAL......

Posted by zaam_mohamed on (April 3, 2014, 15:54 GMT)

we were anticipating Gayle storm but we got nature storm

Posted by GreatAshwin on (April 3, 2014, 15:54 GMT)

Poor West Indies they have no idea how to chase a target Very much one sided match, Easy win to srilanka.

Posted by rk_ks on (April 3, 2014, 15:53 GMT)

What happened to the world class spinner who didn't pick a single wicket. Just a one match storm.

Posted by JoshFromJamRock on (April 3, 2014, 15:52 GMT)

I feel bad being Jamaican because all the Jamaicans in the WI team (Gayle, Samuels, Russell and Santokie) failed miserably.

Congrats Sri Lanka on the Win.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:49 GMT)

Sri Lankan rain Gods at work.

Posted by sachin_equal_to_bradman on (April 3, 2014, 15:47 GMT)

Congrats SL for winning!!! Hope Indians can make it to finals!!!

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:47 GMT)

It has rained down on WI hopes and washed away their chances. Unfortunately they couldnt take advantage of the chase. Gayle and Symmons gifted their wickets away. Gayle should have slashed that ball for a 6 instead of directing it his stumps.

Posted by bobbo2 on (April 3, 2014, 15:46 GMT)

With T20 the toss is too important. In a final you bat first and usually win due to pressure.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:44 GMT)

Method wins over flair then :) Good match though became fairly onesided

Posted by akramk on (April 3, 2014, 15:43 GMT)

Had Pak came to the semis, SL would have been destroyed by now .. Match over by this time. SL should count their stars, they've been so lucky ... First they get WI for semis, then they get to win the toss and bat first ... Can't blame WI here. They were simply unlucky.

Posted by bobbo2 on (April 3, 2014, 15:41 GMT)

If Gayle is not looking to score quickly he is a liability. 13 off 3 not good enough after a good start. Same with Samuals here.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:37 GMT)

I think Herath bowled really well and justified his selection in this match.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:37 GMT)

2 more quick wkts will turn the game for sl ..another few more overs without wkts wi will take the game ...need wkts guys

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:37 GMT)

rangana hearth is a worst bowler insense of wi

Posted by Lanka1003 on (April 3, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

World cup is reserved for SL, so sorry for other teams...

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

wi can change the match in one over may be wi won this match

Posted by Blackholesun on (April 3, 2014, 15:35 GMT)

When it comes to really big matches that really matters Gayle is a non-performer. It's frustrating to see him throwing his wicket.

WI bowlers gave away too many run in the last 2 overs, that will cost the match, because they had big target to chase and the Sri Lanka bowling is too good for them.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:33 GMT)

Windies are keeping their wickets. They will start throwing their bats at the 15 ov mark. Unless sl get another 2

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:31 GMT)

I sense a blitz from Samuels. He is key at this stage. He just has to contribute with a cameo here.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:27 GMT)

true-cric-lover. India's openers do feel bogged down, especially due to Dhawans indifferent form. However our style of play is completely different from SLs. We dont believe in taking undue risks even in the power plays. This is how we play in the IPL too. Having said that I think Rohit Sharma has scored couple of decent 50s.

Posted by CurrentPresident on (April 3, 2014, 15:24 GMT)

As a said earlier, the one to bat first will win. The Sri Lankan youngsters did great even while their old boys failed. With the bowling attack Sri Lanka have, 160 is more than enough. SL to win by at least 30 runs.

Posted by Nampally on (April 3, 2014, 15:22 GMT)

It looks like the WI team is folding up meekly - 40 for 3 after 8 overs! It looks like 120 in 12 overs will require their SIX hitting batsmen to perform. Currently only 3 batsmen are left & it is an uphill task against spin bowlers. I think wi will be lucky to get 120 runs. It appears SL are on their way into finals.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:21 GMT)

Keep calm believe in lions!

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 15:18 GMT)

we need more wickets. Come on Lionz :)

Posted by Pindia on (April 3, 2014, 15:16 GMT)

All going to plan for SL, on balance Bravo/Sammy will not bail them out today! Brilliant team effort from SL...

Posted by JoshFromJamRock on (April 3, 2014, 15:15 GMT)

The problem with Gayle is away going deliveries. Smith hates the offside. Samuels hates going aerial and struggles to rotate strike. Simmons problem is that he doesn't carry on enough and sometimes struggle to rotate strike.

With a top 4 like this WI will get exposed badly BUT thank God for Bravo and Sammy...there is still a chance

Posted by JoshFromJamRock on (April 3, 2014, 15:06 GMT)

Dot ball build up caused those two wickets of Gayle and Smith

Posted by Yousufahmed1 on (April 3, 2014, 15:00 GMT)

@ true-cric-lover Well Indian openers helped India win ICC CT what did Kushal win for SL.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:54 GMT)

come on SL, you beauty, playing well, hope the spinners choke the WI batting!!

all the best from pak fan!

Posted by Snambidi on (April 3, 2014, 14:52 GMT)

Mathews did the hero's work like Indian Captain MSDhoni does. There are many things in common for Dhoni& Mathews. Both plays better under pressure. Both play for the country & not for money alone. Mathews was also Captain & won many matches. 160 is a good score though West Indies is unpredictable. Gayle with injury is more dangerous than the usual Gayle. If there is any need for runner,Gayle would start hitting Sixes after Sixer. Similarly Swaine Smith & Bravo with support from Sammy can do wonders for WI. So the match is going to be interesting , SL bowling alone is a factor they could bank upon .but WI is capable of hitting against anytype of Bowling. Let us see what happens in this glorious encounter between Bat& Ball.

Posted by true-cric-lover on (April 3, 2014, 14:48 GMT)

I think quality finish given by Mathiws and pure cricket played by thirimanne gave answers for many comments delivered by some fans.. @Francis Mel i think mahela out because not of pressure but SL in a plan to take signals for spinners. I also agreed that Kusal's leg positions was not in a safe mode and slower from the bowler bite him. Any how he always given the momentum from start and current Indian openers unable to do so. Thus this is a very much defendable total. If WI reach this surly they will end up with champions.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:46 GMT)

What a start by smith in this run chase. Kulashekara under pressure and bowling some wides. 17 runs of the over

Posted by Yousufahmed1 on (April 3, 2014, 14:44 GMT)

17 after 0.3 overs. LOL. What is happening to self proclaimed best bowling attack. HAHA.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:43 GMT)

Wow ! The explosion started quick !!! Herath or Sena, the quicks just gotta go

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:41 GMT)

weldone my second team Sri Lanka, a good total on the board for a good bowling attack to defend.. go and make it through the finale our prayers and support are with you Team Sri Lanka.. a pakistani SL fan from Pak..

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:41 GMT)

The match was always about windies explosive batting coming up against the sri lankan spin attack. Match has shaped up good so far !

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:38 GMT)

Hope we win If we ball well the match is ours

Posted by JoshFromJamRock on (April 3, 2014, 14:38 GMT)

A solid total by Sri Lanka but its probably 15-20 runs short of one which would make WI feel some serious scorecard pressure. More likely WI will go hard at first and make 50 from powerplay, 20 from the next 4, then 90 from the last 10. Based on the Law of Averages Gayle and Smith will come good while Bravo and Sammy might fail but ..... lets just hope the latter doesn't happen.

West Indies All The Way!!!

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:35 GMT)

why didn't bravo and sammy bowl? ?!! and Russell needs to come good with the bat now to once again make up for his bowling

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:32 GMT)

great batting thats a good total and Srilanka got some gud quality spinners be aggressive, AND ATTACKING bowled them out good luck from PAKISTAN

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:31 GMT)

ll b tough for indies...160 s good enough...

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:30 GMT)

i just cant understand why sammy decided to go with russel last over. anyhow if anyone really knows the west indies team knows that they like to chase. its gonna be a good second half. GO WINDIES GO

Posted by Nuwas on (April 3, 2014, 14:29 GMT)

lol Francis... bad technique from kusal !!! you really dont know anything about techniques do u

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 14:20 GMT)

I think this match is Sri Lankans

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:53 GMT)

Rally.....Rally round the West Indies....now and forever!

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:48 GMT)

Manj Dahriwal. SL almost always chose to bat first no matter what the pitch or ground conditions and the main reason is they do not like the pressure that comes from chasing.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:40 GMT)

Srilanka go hard you can finish it up easily you are the best team and fav for this wt20 worldcup and you deserve this cup waiting for some good hits love from PAKISTAN. WHOLE PAKISAN IS PRAYIN FOR YOU.. GO HARD LIONSSSS.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:37 GMT)

Sri lankan may possibly be all out without crossing 130 if Dilshan gets out within next 2 over

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:35 GMT)

Sangakara looking to be too cautious. Too much pressure. You need to have the courage to take the attack to the opposition like a Sehwag or Maxwell. Sri Lanka will now go into safety mode and play out the 20 overs. On most days they will defend moderate totals but this WI has the talent to achieve it even if they lose quick wickets in the chase.

Posted by Pindia on (April 3, 2014, 13:35 GMT)

Still a good start for Sri Lanka, 140-150 would be a good score

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:33 GMT)

poor sri Lanka. never mess with the west indies . 3 out now ha ha ha. they will be all out for 100

Posted by wapuser on (April 3, 2014, 13:33 GMT)

Wow..! That's a nice turn around. Still wondering why SL choose to bat first?? Were they influenced by WI batting havoc against PAK?

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:24 GMT)

Bad technique by Kusal Periera. He should stick to playing proper cricketing shots. A decent start by SL and will allow Sanga to settle down.

Posted by   on (April 3, 2014, 13:21 GMT)

Jayawardene getting out is a classic example of how SL cannot handle pressure.

Posted by Nampally on (April 3, 2014, 13:15 GMT)

Badree & Santokee were made to look like demon bowlers almost unplayable. SL has torn Badree to shreds & has made Santokee look ordinary in the first 3 overs. Is it the things to come for a SL total of 200! Has Sammy got plan B. Plan A definitely has flopped.

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (April 3, 2014, 13:14 GMT)

You lose the toss and you take NeXT flight home. England, NZ and Pakistan have experienced the outcome of losing the toss. WI should wish that there is dew today which wasn't there in the earlier matches.

Posted by 10000000 on (April 3, 2014, 13:09 GMT)

prasanna will be bad selection - thisara will be very dangerous on his day in this format espaially.

fine with the caption - it wont impact much as 4 ex captions around, some times these inputs will make the new caption more confuse...lets see how mali takeover.
