India v Sri Lanka, World T20, final April 6, 2014

'Been a long time coming' - Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were overwhelmed to be able to sign off their T20 careers with a long-awaited trophy after overcoming India in the World T20 final.

Sangakkara played the decisive hand in the final with an unbeaten 52 off 35 balls, his first significant contribution of the tournament after four previous innings had brought just 19 runs, and he was delighted to have been able to repay his team-mates while also ending Sri Lanka's time as bridesmaids in major events since 1996.

"It's been a long time coming, I can't be happier or prouder," Sangakkara said. "I think the side carried me so I was pretty happy I could give something back to them. It means a lot to all of us; to me, to our families, to everyone back home."

Jayawardene, who made 24 before finding midwicket which appeared to give India an opening, admitted there had been added emotions around this match

"We finally managed to break the jinx," he said. "Thanks so much to family and friends but this one is for Sri Lanka fans who have been waiting since 1996. It wasn't a normal match. There were a lot of emotions as this was the last T20. It hasn't sunk in yet and it will take a couple of days to get the feeling."

Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka's captain for the final three matches of the tournament following Dinesh Chandimal's suspension and then his omission, said the team were desperate to give Sangakkara and Jayawardene a victorious send-off from the format.

"I was really lucky to captain in the last three games. Today, we thought it was Sanga and Mahela's farewell match, the boys thought we needed to do it for them. Last few overs we bowled really well. Mahela and Sanga are world-class batsmen and it was a good opportunity for us to be able to play with them. They are still playing Tests and ODIs and the younger players need to pick all that they can from the two."

Sangakkara you are a great batsman and it was only fitting that you and Mahela took sl over the line. A great performance to beat India who were on a roll. Not to take away anything from them, they played well but sl were too much for them. In the end better team won. And that is absolutely cricket! We Pakistanis like and respect SL team and their players. Congratulations to the whole sl nation on a well deserved win.

A great farewell to two great cricketers and even greater human beings. The way Sangakkara and Jayawardene were congratulated by the Indian players says it all. They have earned the respect of cricketers and fans throughout the world. Perhaps Darren Sammy was right! We have perhaps a couple of years more to enjoy their skills. Let us enjoy them!

    A better team won the final. T20 WC has been a 'true' contest. I believe best 4 reached Semi-final and the top 2 competed for the trophy. The Netherlands were the pleasantly outstanding team, Bangladesh was a huge disappointment and South Africa need an assertive and aggressive thinkers and planners. I would mention Afghanistan because this was their first major tournament and they played like professionals. The rest played as they were expected to;

#worldcup2011 In the quarterfinal against Australia,Yuvraj was the pivot holding the middle order to chase a challenging 260. He hit an unbeaten 57. Dhoni relied on Yuvi to bowl his full quota of 10 overs against Australia and Pakistan. He broke the crucial stand of Kumar Sangakkara (48) and Mahela Jayawardene (103 not out) which was threatening to bat India out of the game. ICC World cup 2011 Man of the tournament:- yuvraj singh #worldcup2014 Yuvi had a rough day in the final, everyone started blaming him but always remember he came through a tough tym in his life, fighting for his life. this happens wateva it is "U R A TRUE INDIAN AND A GREAT CRICKETER"

  • St.John on April 6, 2014, 18:52 GMT

Yes it wasn't a 'normal' match Mahela. Darren Sammy said after losing their storm-hit match that the Almighty wanted SL to win...I guess he was right. . I'm not taking anything away from the Sri Lankans but I am convinced the Almighty did indeed help.

  • bootlicker on April 6, 2014, 18:50 GMT

Sanga, Mahela. you really deserve this win. You guys are great cricketers produced by SL. It was somewhat clearer that SL had a slight edge because of a few reasons. Mahela was leading the team unofficially was the main plus point SL had today. He did it since Chandimal was not around. Second was their death bowling attack and the third was Sanga came to the usual form.

  • Neranga on April 6, 2014, 18:46 GMT

Congratz to SL team and its the best farewell the two greats can ever get. It was not a normal match in any mean...the players were so determined to perform well for the country as well as for Sanga and Mahela, and they just did it very well. Good luck Lions. And good luck for the Indian team who played well through out the tournament.

  • on April 6, 2014, 18:43 GMT

Though I am avid fan of Indian cricket as much as anybody else, I must admit that I had carried dual sentiments throughout the match, after having come home early from office just to watch farewell match of two of the world class batsmen for last time in shorter format. Partly because I have reasonable awareness about cash starved Sri Lankan cricket board N internal politics and that individuals do not have the same strong financial backing as some of the famed Indians do. Secondly from simple cricketing sense, I simply love watching Mahela's pure art of batting and Sanga's grit. Well done Guys and you have reached deserved it.

  • sachinssnn on April 6, 2014, 18:35 GMT

boy you should see how happy lankans were tonight..streets are blocked...people smiling everywhere...hugging each other without even knowing...wow...love you guys...god bless you all for giving such a memorable night...miss you sanga & mahela....

We are the world T20 Champions... Woooohoooooo.....Sri Lankans rejoice... This is for the last four finals heart breaks....! If you see a sri lankan wearing their cricket jersey for the next week anywhere in the world... Just give them a thumbs up and a smile....Guess what I'll be wearing it everywhere I go..... wooooohoooooo....

  • loris on April 6, 2014, 18:26 GMT

Great win. What a send off for Sri Lankan twin towers. great bowling effort against best batting line up in the world. Specially death bowling. Thanks Sanga and Mahela for your service for Sri Lankan cricket. Best time for leaving T20. Next 50 over world cup must be your last ODI for SriLanka. Then test. Proud moment for Sri Lankan cricket.

  • on April 6, 2014, 18:16 GMT

Congratulations to the Sri Lankans. They played with the right spirit throughout the tournament. As a West Indian, I believed that if the rain didn't stop the semi-final against us, Sri Lanka would have still won. Their death bowling after their defeat against England awoke them.In today's final it was immaculate. Lasith Malinga is not a cointosser as is our test captain.

Ever since you took the wheel from Arjuna and Aravinda, you sail ship steadily, brilliantly, calmly. Your batting elegance is treat to watch! I think world has never seen such a brilliant.classical pair..They were wonderful in all formats. Hat off guys! we are going to miss u in T20.

It was a fitting farewell for the dependable due. they couldn't have got anything better than today's win, The love for the game and their contributions have been immeasurable. The performance with bat and ball was above par today. Credit to Lasith and Nuwan too who were just unplayable with precision line Yorkers in death overs. I guess Dilshan and Mahela laid the foundation while Sanga saved his best for last. Sanga you genius!! Sheer brilliance from team Sri Lanka,. Finally team effort finally paid off. IT's PARTY TIME!

  • Ramansilva on April 6, 2014, 18:10 GMT

Chandimal should have been brought back to captain the team. Without Mahela around next time Malinga will be really a joke if continued as the captain. I hope sense will prevail.

Thank you SL for conquering the epitome of Cricket after so many heart breaks. Sanga and Mahela bit farewell from T20I on a high and they absolutely deserve it. We played like a team and Chandimal should not feel bad because he will get more oppotunities with Angelo, Sachithra and Kusal in the team for a long time. Brovo!!!! PS: Thanks Yuvi, you were our 12th man on the field :)
