World T20, 4th Match, First Round Group B: Netherlands v United Arab Emirates at Sylhet, Mar 17, 2014
World T20 - 4th match, First Round Group B
Netherlands won by 6 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)
Played at Sylhet Stadium (neutral venue)
17 March 2014 - night match (20-over match)

Netherlands are going to start with spin.. Swart to start his offspin round the stumps

"Unkind, but probably not inaccurate to say that this match is for the wooden spoon in this group. Hard to see wither side winning another game apart from this one," says Mark

Netherlands disperse after a quick huddle. We are just a few minutes away from the start. Billy Bowden makes a belated dash to the middle.

7.10 pm UAE have won the toss and decided to bat. Khurram Khan says it's a decent pitch and he would like to put up a total. Unlike the previous match, this match will have the same conditions all through, under the lights - the ground is already wet due to dew. Khurram thinks 140-150 is going to be a good total. Khurram says it's been a good year for the team after having qualified for this tournament as well as the ODI World Cup. They have a three possible spinners and three seamers in the side.

Peter Borren would have batted first as well. They have included Tom Cooper, who flew in from Australia just ahead of the match. Netherlands though are a touch light on the spin area, with only Seelar and Swart to tweak. But like we saw in the previous match, the seamers extracted some swing too.

6.45 pm What a cracker of a first game for Sylhet! Ireland were cruising along but somehow managed to dig themselves a hole before sneaking a win off the last ball. How did it ever come do that? The match was a welcome change after the two one-sided games on the first night and it bodes perfectly for the second match of the day - Netherlands v UAE.

Netherlands are no newbies to a world tournament and they have pulled off an upset or two (Lord's, 2009, remember?). UAE, however, are making a comeback after 18 years of sitting in the sidelines. Spin-friendly conditions, some swing too - it is very hard to take a pick between the sides. Anyway, here's the preview. Netherlands would quickly want to focus after being hit by a little controversy this morning.

0.1

Swart to Amjad Ali, FOUR, he drifts on to the pads and is welcomed with a powerful sweep that sends it down to deep backward square leg boundary

0.2

Swart to Amjad Ali, 1 run, this time he comes forward and eases it to long on for a single

0.3

Swart to Faizan Asif, no run, it's on the pads again and the batsman tickles it fine to the leg side, but straight to short fine leg

0.4

Swart to Faizan Asif, SIX, whoa whoa! No one is ready to wait! Asif serves up a statement of intent as he launches into this flighted delivery and sends this as high as long.. It lands close to the sight screen. Wonderful strike

0.5

Swart to Faizan Asif, no run, flatter this time, the batsman comes forward and defends

0.6

Swart to Faizan Asif, OUT, what an eventful over this has turned out to be! Asif, probably a touch too keen, sees a full delivery but doesn't get the kind of elevation he got two balls ago. Not an ideal short to play when you already have 11 from the over and there is a fielder at long on! It is straight down the throat of Jamil. Swart is ecstatic

van der Gugten to Amjad Ali, no run, this one is full and on the pads, some swing too and the batsman misses the flick completely. He wasn't expecting that line

1.4

van der Gugten to Amjad Ali, OUT, Timber!!! His over aggression has consumed him! Was that short necessary? I am not sure. It was a length delivery, a touch too full to pull, but the batsman swivelled on his heels like he wanted to send it into the tea gardens, but could only chop it on to his stumps..

7.3

van Beek to Patil, 1 run, turns over the strike by guiding this one down to third man

7.4

van Beek to Khurram Khan, FOUR, what a good pull is that! Flat and off the middle, it travels quickly enough and lands just inside the boundary ropes to the right of fine leg. It was a quick delivery, but Khurram was quick to pounce on that

14.4

Seelaar to Shaiman Anwar, FOUR, wow, another lovely inside out drive from Anwar! He makes room and powers it over extra cover

14.5

Seelaar to Shaiman Anwar, no run, a chance for a stumping! If it is then it's excellent work by the keeper as it was a difficult! The batsman comes out of the crease but yorks himself. He misses and the keeper takes the bails off in a flash. Anwar hadn't gone too far out - his back leg was just over the line - and he tries to pull it back by lifting it! van Beek to Shetty, 1 run, a good yorker from wide of the crease, the batsman takes a step down the crease and punches it to long on for a single

18.2

van Beek to Silva, 1 leg bye, full and on the pads, the batsman looks to flick it fine, but gets an inside edge on to the pads. They pick up a single as the ball rolls to the off side

18.3

van Beek to Shetty, FOUR, poor delivery! It's a low full toss down the leg side and all the batsman has to do is to show it direction, which he does well. It beats the fine leg fielder comfortably

18.4

van Beek to Shetty, 1 wide, another poor delivery, again down the leg side. The keeper does well to dive across and get to this one

18.4

van Beek to Shetty, 1 run, he comes down the pitch and punches the full delivery to long on

18.5

van Beek to Silva, 1 run, slower delivery, it messes with the batsman's attempted chip. He gets an inside edge on to the pads, but the two pick up a single

18.6

van Beek to Shetty, 1 run, OUT, full and slow, the batsman digs it out to long on and calls for a second. But this throw from long on -- Tom Cooper it is - catches the batsman well short of the crease. Flat, quick and on target, it hits the stumps direct at the non-striker's end

EHSN Silva run out 3 (10m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

End of over 19 (10 runs) United Arab Emirates 149/8 (RR: 7.84)

    • LV van Beek 3-0-30-0
    • T van der Gugten 4-0-24-2

Last over to come, but UAE have managed to put up decent runs on the board already

19.1

Jamil to Kamran Shazad, 1 leg bye, slower delivery, the batsman hoicks too early, misses and is hit on the thigh pads, they take a leg bye

19.2

Jamil to Shetty, no run, another slower delivery, the batsman misses again. This is good bowling. He was too early into his shot

19.3

Jamil to Shetty, OUT, slower delivery no. 3! This time the batsman gets some bat on it, but it's a worthless contact as he lobs it gently towards the bowler. If there was an award for a dolly, this would have taken the cake. No force on that shot, just a limp lob

V Shetty c & b Jamil 10 (16m 12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

19.4

Jamil to Guruge, 1 run, another slower delivery, the batsman again just ends up lobbing it, but he is lucky as it's to the leg side and they pick up a single to midwicket

19.5

Jamil to Kamran Shazad, OUT, slower delivery, first proper contact in this over! But no change in fortune as the batsman is caught at deep midwicket. The bat made a good sound, but it just went up and the fielder ran in from the deep to take a good forward-diving catch

Kamran Shazad c van Beek b Jamil 0 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Somehow UAE have managed to reach their target of 150. The innings was set in motion by the 67-run stand for the third wicket between Khurram and Patil before the wickets went down in clumps. In between they managed to find the boundary enough times to keep the scoreboard ticking. But they could have gone to 160 and beyond. It's not going to be an easy chase though as Netherlands batting hasn't been firing. Back in 10.
