World T20 - 14th match, Group 1

South Africa v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 5 runs

The batsmen have strode out. Dale Steyn's got the ball. Here comes the cricket.
vigneshs: "Come on! I liked 27 dresses." Word of advice Vignesh, don't go admitting that too loudly. The teams' anthems are being played. Right now it's the Sri Lankan one, which is the best anthem in the world. Full disclosure: I'm Sri Lankan.

Mac: "Now that he's free of his English commitments, I'm disappointed not to see Kevin Pietersen's name in the South African lineup..." He might be cooling his heels, waiting for the qualification period to pass. Probably not though.

If this game was a bad romantic comedy, it would be "27 dresses", such has been the teams' luck in world tournaments. Firdose Moonda expands on this in her match preview.

Mark: "As an England fan I don't buy into the "South Africa are in crisis" theory. They are still good, still dangerous and only need one or two wins to start proving it. England's problem was that they could not stop losing - South Africa are nowhere near there yet, so I am still expecting them to be very dangerous in this competition. This could be the match to decide the group winners."

Sri Lanka appear to be favourites for this match, but the last time these teams squared off for a T20 series, South Africa did get the better of hosts Sri Lanka, winning 2-1.

South Africa XI: 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Farhaan Behardien 6 David Miller, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Dale Steyn 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Lonwabo Tsotsobe, 11 Imran Tahir

Sri Lanka XI: 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Dinesh Chandimal (capt), 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachitra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Sri Lanka win the toss and will bat first, hoping the pitch will turn a little later on. De Villiers says he is not too unhappy about that, because South Africa have the pacemen to put Sri Lanka under pressure early. Thankfully for South Africa, Dale Steyn is fit enough to play.

AB de Villiers is at the toss, so du Plessis has definitely been ruled out for the match.

Looks a lovely day in Chittagong. Shaun Pollock thinks the track could have a little in it for the seamers. The big news at the toss will be whether Faf du Plessis and Dale Steyn will have sufficiently recovered from hamstring strains to play the match.

Hello all. Welcome to our coverage of the opening Group 1 clash between Sri Lanka and South Africa.

0.1

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, no run, on target first up, pitched on a length on middle stump. Kusal defends onto the leg side.

0.2

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, but that's one's a bit wayward. Kusal doesn't miss out. It's full and wide, Kusal frees his arms and slams that over mid off. First Jayasuriya comparisons of the day from Nasser Hussain

0.3

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, lovely timing. Just leant into it. Another full one from Steyn, closer into the stumps. Kusal opens the face and pushes it square on the off side, and though it's just a jab, it races to the deep point fence for four

0.4

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, 1 wide, wide down leg side

0.4

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, SIX, oh boy, best shot yet. That's that pick up shot from wide of off stump. He's loving this length from Steyn. It's slammed over cow corner.

0.5

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, 1 wide, wide down the off side this time. Steyn's radar is off

0.5

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, wide and full again, but Kusal's timing is not quite there this time. He gets it as far as mid off and they scamper one.

0.6

Steyn to Dilshan, OUT, and carnage at the other end! What a first over. Steyn bowls a lovely ball, quick, fullish and pitching on off stump. Dilshan plays that horrible across-the-line swipe that has brought umpteen similar dismissal in the last two years. Looks like Steyn beat him for pace and the off stump is out of the ground.

Tsotsobe to start at the other end.

1.1

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 wide, begins with a leg side wide,

1.1

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, no run, fullish ball on the pads, Perera doesn't make contact with an attempted flick to leg

1.2

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, no run, length on the pads again, Perera clips it to leg this time, but it's straight to the square leg fielder

1.3

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, back of a length on the body, Perera turns it square on the leg side again and the batsmen take a quick single

Mohammed: "Where are the LED STUMPS, Is this not a WT20 Game. I saw them yesterday." They are probably only for the night matches.

1.4

Tsotsobe to Jayawardene, 1 run, length outside off stump, Mahela opens the face and gets it behind point for a single

1.5

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, no run, length outside off stump, Kusal noticeably less ambitious in this over and he just knocks it back to the bowler

1.6

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, slower one I think, length on off stump again. Kusal just gently whips this into a gap at around midwicket. Another single.

Morkel is into the attack now

2.1

M Morkel to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, short of a length at the body, worked off the hips behind square

2.2

M Morkel to Jayawardene, no run, length outside off stump, Mahela bunts this into the turf

2.3

M Morkel to Jayawardene, 1 run, backs away and hits a back of a length ball between cover and point. Not much power, but placed well enough for a single

Saad: "LED lights are there but the sun light makes them disappear #Science" I don't know what to believe.

2.4

M Morkel to MDKJ Perera, SIX, another pick-up-shot, off the legs this time. Goes very high, and the fielder at deep midwicket thought he was in with a chance, but it's well over his head and all the way.

2.5

M Morkel to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length outside off, Perera pushes this to mid off and runs

2.6

M Morkel to Jayawardene, no run, length ball on the legs, Mahela tries to work this fine, but it flicks his pad and passes through to the keeper

3.1

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, fullish on off stump, punched to long off

3.2

Tsotsobe to Jayawardene, 2 runs, flick shot by Mahela this time. The ball was on his legs, he hits it somewhat aerially through square leg and it's cleaned up at the boundary

3.3

Tsotsobe to Jayawardene, no run, full on off stump, Mahela closes the face, but without much power.

Aatif: "Kusal Perera unsold at IPL is making a statement." Is there any other reason for playing well any more?

3.4

Tsotsobe to Jayawardene, 1 run, length ball wide of off stump, late cut behind square for a single

3.5

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, another of those lovely pick up shots. He's got them humming today. That's full on about off stump, turns his wrist on it but it doesn't get as much elevation this time. One bounce four.

3.6

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, no run, length on off stump, defended to the off side

End of over 4 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 38/1 (RR: 9.50)
MDKJ Perera    30* (16b 3x4 2x6)      LL Tsotsobe    2-0-12-0
DPMD Jayawardene    5* (7b)      M Morkel    1-0-9-0

4.1

M Morkel to Jayawardene, FOUR, comes down the track and threads the offside field. Typical Mahela stroke. He advanced, gave himself room, turns a length ball into a fullish one and flays this through cover

4.2

M Morkel to Jayawardene, OUT, gone! Morkel's extra bounce might have done for the batsman. He tried to lift this back over the bowler's head but it hit too high on the bat, and manages only to get it as far as Steyn at mid on, who barely has to move to complete the catch. Big strike for SA.

DPMD Jayawardene c Steyn b M Morkel 9 (16m 9b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

4.3

M Morkel to Sangakkara, no run, length angled across Sangakkara first up. Driven to cover

4.4

M Morkel to Sangakkara, no run, length ball, tighter into the stumps this time. Hit to cover again.

4.5

M Morkel to Sangakkara, 1 run, length ball on off stump, defended to the leg side, but the field is far enough back to take a single

4.6

M Morkel to MDKJ Perera, no run, back of a length at the body. Kusal shuffles back and defends.

End of over 5 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 43/2 (RR: 8.60)

5.1

Tsotsobe to Sangakkara, no run, short ball outside off stump. Sanga gets on his toes and defends

5.2

Tsotsobe to Sangakkara, no run, short ball again, right at the head. Sanga goes for a very unconvincing hook and doesn't connect. Muted appeal for caught behind, but he hasn't hit that

5.3

Tsotsobe to Sangakkara, 1 run, back of a length at the body, Sanga works that to midwicket for a single

Uwaisul Karnain: "Kusal Perera - Six against Dale Steyn's first over, Six against Morne Morkel's first over. Legends like Mahela & Sanga may feel free about their retirements from the shortest format of the game. SL's future seems to be in talented hands of Kusal Perera, Mathews, Thirimanne, etc." Early days yet for Kusal. He's certainly got talent.

5.4

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, no run, length outside off stump, check-driven to cover

5.5

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, SIX, smashed. No flicking there, just emphatic big-hitting. Length outside off stump, Kusal steps across and slogs across the line, it flies way over the cow corner fence

5.6

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, length on middle stump, slower ball I think. Just gently knocked into the legside infield where there is space for a single

End of over 6 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 51/2 (RR: 8.50)

Powerplay done and dusted now. Duminy into the attack

6.1

Duminy to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, fires one in on the toes first up, turned towards deep midwicket for a single

6.2

Duminy to Sangakkara, 1 run, slower through the air, straightening on midde stump. Worked towards midwicket again

6.3

Duminy to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, drops it a little shorter on the offside. Kusal pulls hard, but there's cover in the deep at cow corner

6.4

Duminy to Sangakkara, 1 run, full, straightening outside off stump, Sangakkara pushes this towards cover

6.5

Duminy to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, flatter, on the stumps, Flicks this towards mid wicket again, Kusal wanted a second, but he's sent back

6.6

Duminy to Sangakkara, 1 run, full outside off stump, punched to long off. Six off the over, all singles.

7.1

JA Morkel to Sangakkara, FOUR, Sanga hits a beautiful off drive to Morkel's first ball, which is overpitched outside the off stump. Lovely timing.

7.2

JA Morkel to Sangakkara, 2 runs, full on the stumps, Sanga tries to whip it square, but it takes a leading edge and squirts out behind square on the off side

7.3

JA Morkel to Sangakkara, 1 run, full on the stumps again, punched to long on

7.4

JA Morkel to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, length on the leg side, poor ball. Kusal just glances it past the keeper, and as fine leg is in the circle, there's only one result for that stroke

7.5

JA Morkel to MDKJ Perera, no run, length on off stump, punched to cover

7.6

JA Morkel to MDKJ Perera, 1 wide, another one down the leg side, but Kusal lets it go this time

7.6

JA Morkel to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, shortish ball on the body, short-arm pulled to the man at deep square leg. A little aerial, but very safe

End of over 8 (13 runs) Sri Lanka 70/2 (RR: 8.75)

Jacques: "This is the correct strategy in T20. You need to get 60 off the first 5 overs, put the opening bowlers under pressure and the start becoming loose. I fear this is exactly where SA lack in T20. SA always try to start conservatively, yet they lose wickets anyway allowing the bowlers to build confidence adding rather pressure to their own middle order. Unfortunately I think this is SL all the way :-("

8.1

Duminy to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, short on leg stump, and Kusal shovels this very nicely behind square on the leg side, off the back foot.

8.2

Duminy to MDKJ Perera, 3 leg byes, on the legs again, no bat this time, but it hits thigh pad and evades the keeper

8.3

Duminy to Sangakkara, no run, length ball, straightening outside off. Defended to cover. Kussal wanted a single, but he's sent back by Sanga. A direct hit from the cover fielder might have had him in trouble. Might have winded himself, diving to get back.

8.4

Duminy to Sangakkara, 1 wide, slows it down, but sends it down the leg side

8.4

Duminy to Sangakkara, 1 run, Sanga is down the track, turning it into a full toss. Whips it to long on

8.5

Duminy to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, fullish on the pads, turned behind square on the leg side. That's Kusal's fifty, off 29 balls. Fine innings. His team would love him to keep going.

8.6

Duminy to Sangakkara, no run, fullish outside off stump, driven, but straight to cover.

9.1

Imran Tahir to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, floated up on middle stump. Kusal gets a stride in and whips it wide of deep midwicket

9.2

Imran Tahir to Sangakkara, no run, straighter one, slides past the outside edge of Sangakkara, who's playing an off drive

9.3

Imran Tahir to Sangakkara, 1 run, flattish outside off stump again, Sanga connects with the off drive this time

9.4

Imran Tahir to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, flatter again, on middle stump. Kusal sweeps to the legside sweeper

9.5

Imran Tahir to Sangakkara, OUT, poor shot, and Tahir is ecstatic as usual. Sanga gets on one knee and tries to hammer a full, wide delivery to the straight boundary, but the ball is too wide to control and there might have been some topspin as well. Takes his top edge and loops gently to Lopsy at short third man

Shivam Suri: "Tahir's follow through is right in front of the umpire, wonder if he's missed out on a couple of leg befores because of that."

Steyn's back for his second over.

10.1

Steyn to Mathews, no run, lovely shape first ball, as Mathews jumps out of the crease and tries to slam him over long on. A little outswing off a fullish length takes the ball away from the bat

10.2

Steyn to Mathews, no run, lovely movement again, and Mathews can't get bat to ball. He tried to punch that away on the offside, but it beats the edge

10.3

Steyn to Mathews, no run, another super ball. Short of a length, moving in the air and off the seem. Mathews pokes and is not even close to hitting that

10.4

Steyn to Mathews, no run, short and at the body this time. Mathews ducks. Steyn follows up with a stare. He's fired up.

10.5

Steyn to Mathews, 1 run, fuller, moving away again, but Mathews gets something on it. Hits the outside half of the bat and scoots to third man

10.6

Steyn to MDKJ Perera, no run, bouncer, and that looked like it took the top edge, but it's safe. Kusal tries to hook a well-directed bouncer. It catches some part of the bat and lobs back towards the non-strikers' end, but Steyn is too far down the pitch to attempt a catch

11.2

Imran Tahir to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, Kusal comes down the track and slams that back at the bowler, who can't hold on to it. Long on cleans up

11.3

Imran Tahir to Mathews, 1 run, floated up on off stump, Mathews hits to long on

11.4

Imran Tahir to MDKJ Perera, no run, Kusal still trying to smash everything. Skidder from Tahir, outside the off stump. Kusal tries to cut violently, but doesn't time it

11.5

Imran Tahir to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, full on the stumps, Kusal tries to hit that over long on but doesn't time it again. It's in the air, prompting shouts of catch-it, but it lands well short of the incoming fielder

11.6

Imran Tahir to Mathews, FOUR, Mathews is down the track this time, turning a length ball into an overpitched one. Bludgeons this right back past the bowler, to the straight fence

12.1

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, full and wide, Kusal tries to bash that through the offside. Another top edge, but it lands well short of fine leg, running around

12.2

Tsotsobe to Mathews, 2 runs, floated up on off stump, Mathews works that gently into the gap between deep midwicket and long on, giving himself enough time for two

12.3

Tsotsobe to Mathews, 1 run, down the track to a shortish ball, Mathews makes room and clubs it to the offside sweeper

12.4

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, FOUR, full and on off stump, and Kusal has so much power in that bottom hand, it's obscene. He bludgeons that past a diving cover fielder, and the men on the fence had no chance

12.5

Tsotsobe to MDKJ Perera, 1 run, short and wide-ish, but he didn't try to over hit that cut shot, and point got a hand to it.

12.6

Tsotsobe to Mathews, 2 runs, ungainly shot from Mathews, but it gets two runs. It's a bouncer at the body, Mathews backs away and swats at it like a tennis player with very bad service technique. It goes in the air between deep cover and long off. Easy double.

17.1

Steyn to NLTC Perera, FOUR, and here goes Thisara. Steyn sends a length ball outside off stump, Thisara clears the front leg and wallops him wide of long on for four. A couple of bounces and over the fence

17.2

Steyn to NLTC Perera, no run, clears that front leg again, but Steyn goes wider and Thisara misses

17.3

Steyn to NLTC Perera, 1 run, yorker-length ball on the stumps, Thisara hits this towards midwicket for one

17.4

Steyn to Mathews, no run, length outside off stump, Mathews tried to run it down to third man, but misses. Slower ball from Steyn.

17.5

Steyn to Mathews, FOUR, short ball, and a lucky boundary for Mathews. He makes room and tries to hook Steyn. Gets a top edge which goes over the keeper and to the fence

17.6

Steyn to Mathews, 1 run, shortish ball from Steyn, Mathews knocks it down into the leg side and there's enough space there for a run

End of over 18 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 148/5 (RR: 8.22)
AD Mathews    37* (27b 3x4 1x6)      DW Steyn    3-0-28-1

18.1

M Morkel to Mathews, 1 run, nice yorker on off stump, Mathews jams it out to mid off and scampers through

18.2

M Morkel to NLTC Perera, 2 runs, misses a yorker slightly, and Perera gets under that one, bashing over the bowlers' head. The SA fielders on the fence do a terrific job cutting that off though, and it's only two

18.3

M Morkel to NLTC Perera, OUT, a Twenty20 dismissal if I ever saw one. Perera aims a massive six over cow corner, swings at the length ball from Morkel, but he completely misses. The ball hits the top of off stump, as Perera's follow-through finishes up somewhere near square leg

NLTC Perera b M Morkel 8 (8m 6b 1x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

18.4

M Morkel to Kulasekara, 2 runs, length on off stump, hit cleanly back over Morkel. Duminy runs around from long on to tag it

18.5

M Morkel to Kulasekara, 1 run, Kule moves across to the off side, hoping to lap-scoop it past short-fine-leg, but Morkel follows him too well. In the end he bunts it to the legside infield and the batsmen cross

18.6

M Morkel to Mathews, 1 run, full toss on leg stump, Mathew squirts it to point and sprints through. Will be annoyed he didn't find the gap

End of over 19 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 156/6 (RR: 8.21)
AD Mathews    39* (29b 3x4 1x6)      M Morkel    4-0-31-2

19.1

Steyn to Mathews, 2 runs, full and on leg stump, Mathews jams down on that one, getting it towards long on, and they sprint two, much to Steyn's displeasure

19.2

Steyn to Mathews, 2 runs, full on the stumps, Mathews shovels that over the off side and deep cover has to run around to cut it off

19.3

Steyn to Mathews, OUT, full on the pads, Mathew tries to close the face on it after backing away, but he's a little fast on the shot. The ball hits the edge and deflects back onto the stumps.

AD Mathews b Steyn 43 (50m 32b 3x4 1x6) SR: 134.37

19.4

Steyn to Senanayake, 1 run, full toss on the stumps, Senanayake drives that straight past the bowler, but without much power. Mid off cleans up.

19.5

Steyn to Kulasekara, no run, slower length ball outside off stump, and Kule can't connect with an inside out shot. Super finish here from Steyn.

165 is nothing better than a middling score, you feel, on a pitch that seems pretty decent for batting. How SA manage Ajantha Mendis might be key to how this game turns out. 19.6

Steyn to Kulasekara, FOUR, the bowler's unlucky there, but it happens. Wide yorker, Kule throws his bat at it, gets an outside edge and it slides past the keeper and is too fine for third man
