World T20, 20th Match, Group 2: Bangladesh v West Indies at Dhaka, Mar 25, 2014
World T20 - 20th match, Group 2
West Indies won by 73 runs
25 March 2014 - night match (20-over match)

Smith on strike.. Mortaza to start off. One slip in place

The tournament anthem gets the crowd going - it is catchy I must say. Anyway, out walk Chris Gayle and Dwayne Smith. Huge cheer as the home team walks in.

"Going by the color superstition in this tournament, the men in green have lost their opening matches (Pakistan and Australia), and men in blue (Sri Lanka and India) have won two out of two matches. So things not looking good for Bangladesh today!" Jiten Surtani has unearthed the equation for everything. Take that Einstein.

The teams have assembled for the national anthems, Gayle walks with his pads on..

Charbel: "I'm shocked that Nasir Hossain has been dropped. Yes, he's had it tough of late but surely he's worth persisting with because of his ability to finish an innings so well. It's all the more harsh considering he was nearly stranded against Hong Kong before he could get going because of the incompetencies of others"

Mohammad Isam tells me "First time Nasir has been dropped since debut in Aug 14, 2011"

The pitch, as we have seen in the few games that have been played in Mirpur, is going to aid the spinners..

7.10 pm While we wait for the match to start, time to hear from our expert Martin Crowe on their fantasy cricket picks and also about what to expect from the match..

Mahbub Akhter: "I think, this is the best team that the management has selected!!! If still Bangladesh cannot beat WI, then simply they have not gone to that level of class."

Kamran: "@Mahbub Akhter, on one of these days a World XI would not be able to beat this Windies team. Doesn't mean B'desh are not good enough if they don't win. I expect them to put in a good fight." He adds, "A moment of silence for all those who have selected A Razzak ($8.5Mn) in their Fantasy teams."

Karthi The Rock: "Big role to play for Shakib and Gazi... But the start is going to be crucial for Carribean batsmen! Interesting to see how they go against Mashrafe and Al-amin.. So called 'Defending champions' should live upto their expectations but BD has home advantage."

7.00 pm Bangladesh have won the toss and they will bowl. Four changes from Bangladesh!! Mushfiqur says it's difficult to set target on this pitch and he prefers to bowl with a dry ball first up. West Indies are going unchanged into the match. Darren Sammy, who would have bowled first too, says anything above 155 should be a good target.

"If Mashrafe plays today and the Razzak manages to keep his line and length, I think West Indies are in for a rough ride tonight, " Awsaf, Mashrafe is in, but no Razzak today..

6.45 pm Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, said on the eve of their first Super 10 match that they had nothing to lose and he wanted his team to give others a hard time, something the home team is perfectly capable of, but needs to find the confidence within to do more often at the big stage. The recent losses to Afghanistan and Hong Kong are still fresh, but they would quickly need to move on.

West Indies are not a bad first opponent to have in such a situation - the defending champions appeared jaded in their first outing a few days back. More over, they struggled against spin, something Bangladesh management would have made a note of. West Indies is also the only top eight team that Bangladesh have beaten in the past in a T20 game. However, they are also one of the most dangerous propositions and it's more or less a do or die game for them. As Shakib Al Hasan said before the match, "If they play well, we are finished".

Welcome to our coverage of the match between Bangladesh and West Indies. With two contrasting team, this could be fun.

"I can't imagine that the West Indies will play so badly again. Pakistan looked awful in their first game and came back to win well. West Indies are likely to do the same. It's a shame for the Bangla fans, who are perhaps the loyalest in the world, but I think that the Windies would de distressed to lose this one," says Mark, who is always the first one to comment here.

Hashanat: "All depends how BD team selects first 11 today... they must have three spinners with two pacer... Sakib and Sohag and my preference is Sabbir who is all-rounder, pacer Al-Amin and Zia(part-timer) and if Mashrafe is fine, of course must be included. "

Al-Amin Hossain to Smith, SIX, Whoaa! This is as flat as you can imagine! It's only marginally short and it's hit straight to the deep square leg fielder. The ball didn't really go more than four meters above the ground, but never really came down..

SarfBD: "Mashrafi will be the first person to protest if anyone compares him with Waqar in fron of him. But this lad is an under achiever. Could be considered as a top bowler if his career wasn't hampered by so many injuries. Even today he is playing with painkillers"

Gazi to continue...he has bowled two good overs

SK101: "Chris Gayle baffles me. Why take 20 deliveries to make 5 runs, under the assumption that the next 20 will produce 50? To me its arrogance. If you have the ability to smack 50 off 20, then you should be able to do better than 5 off the first 20. I love him for all his big hitting but the philosophy is wrong in my opinion"

10.3

Sabbir Rahman to Smith, no run, flatter and quicker, the batsman defends it off the back foot

10.4

Sabbir Rahman to Smith, FOUR, this is poor bowling! It's flighted and going down the leg side, Smith just helps it along and beats the short fine leg easily.. he has been sweeping so well, so that's not the line to bowl

10.5

Sabbir Rahman to Smith, 1 run, allows this one to spin away, then crunches it to deep cover for a single

Shan Fastian: "A year or two back, No one ever thought about that Gayle will play like Misbah someday. He is blocking and saving his wicket for later part to explode."

10.6

Sabbir Rahman to Gayle, 1 run, he comes round the wicket and bowls a flatter delivery, the batsman easily pushes it to long on for a single

Mahmudullah to Smith, OUT, this one is a proper tog-edge now! Smith was looking to send this over square leg, but was not to the pitch of the delivery. He hoicks across the line and gets a huge top edge that is taken by the short fine leg fielder.

DR Smith c Al-Amin Hossain b Mahmudullah 72 (49m 43b 10x4 3x6) SR: 167.44

Vishnu: "I think this is a psychological move from WI team management. As long as Gayle is out there in the middle, they know that the fielding side will invest all their concentration on how to stop him or get him out meanwhile the other batsman can play loose and its working here big time. "

Simmons is the new man

Umar: "I am for sure really looking forward this to match i remember last time when Gayle played that way in t20 world cup vs Australia he ended up in 80 was not out and team score was in 200's if that is the score here really hard for bangladeshis to win this one..."

Here comes your man Bhargav.. Shakib is here..

Bhargav Sura: "If Shakib needs to come in to bowl, why in the later overs? Why not open bowling with him or at least in the top order. He is your best bowler - your strategy should be to get Gayle out. If most other bowlers are ineffective in the first few overs, you should know and bring Shakib in. I understand the strategy of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and South Africa to have Ajmal, Malinga, and Steyn bowl 3 overs after the 10 overs because they can afford since they have good bowlers. Bangladesh cannot."

12.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Simmons, 1 wide, OUT, a wicket first ball, he is stumped with one fired down the leg side! What an impact this guy has on Bangladesh.. He saw the batsman moving out and pushed it down the leg.. Poor judgment from Simmons who didn't realise the ball was in Mushy's hands and kept moving forward..He was well inside the crease and just didn't see where the ball was. No bat, no pad on that.. it was a good solid wide

15.3

Mahmudullah to Gayle, no run, this is tragedy for Gayle fans! He flat bats this back to the bowler. In other times, those used to land in Dhaka city

Mahmudullah to Gayle, FOUR, no timing again! Oh no, what are you doing Bangladesh! This is hit down to long on, straight to Bijoy, who lets it go through his hands..poor poor effort

15.6

Mahmudullah to Gayle, 1 run, comes down the pitch and dabs it to midwicket for a single

SaZ: "This is pretty bland performance from Gayle so far. He seems uninterested to score or play for that matter. The last WI match was not much different either; the whole team showed no real desire to win the match. I am not sure what is going with WI team, but this is not how one expects them to play in World Cup. WI needs to show some real passion and not let the fans down."

End of over 16 (7 runs) West Indies 123/2 (RR: 7.68)

    • CH Gayle 31 (40b 1x4 1x6)
    • MN Samuels 12 (13b 1x4)
    • Mahmudullah 3-0-27-1
    • Shakib Al Hasan 2-0-9-1

Only four overs left now.. Bangladesh won't mind this at all.

16.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Gayle, 1 run, looks to hit down the ground but gets an inside edge on to his boots.. A single to the off side

16.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Samuels, 4 byes, full and wide, outside the marker, was actually a good ball till Mushfiqur allows it to go between his legs! Bangladesh have given away too many of these

16.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Samuels, 4 byes, another one through Mushfiqur's legs! this is horrible stuff! They have everything in control, but they are giving away free runs. It was full toss outside off, the batsman misses his drive and the keeper keeps his legs spread apart

16.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Samuels, 1 run, punched to long off for an easy single

An uneasy buzz in the stands....

16.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Gayle, FOUR, full on off, he still doesn't get his timing, but this is straight enough to beat the fielders in the deep. Gets a boundary after an age

16.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Gayle, SIX, ok this is what you don't bowl when a batsman is stuggling! A juicy full toss from Shakib, this is hammered over long on..that six was bigger than any of Smith's hits today. 92 m

Sam: "I used to think the most ridiculous thing in the stadium were those fans painted like tigers, but today it is Gayle's batting. Hold on, it is Mushfiqur's leaking legs all of a sudden."

End of over 17 (20 runs) West Indies 143/2 (RR: 8.41)

    • CH Gayle 42 (43b 2x4 2x6)
    • MN Samuels 13 (16b 1x4)
    • Shakib Al Hasan 3-0-21-1
    • Mahmudullah 3-0-27-1

Al-Amin comes back

17.1

Al-Amin Hossain to Samuels, 1 run, full and wide, the batsman squeezes it out to deep cover

Sid: "The reason for Bangladesh cricket not progressing even after so many years definitely has to do with commitment. And the first pointer towards that is fielding and B'desh are the worst fielding side of the test playing nations. Granted that subcontinental players are not the fittest but fielding is one thing that can be improved if practiced consistently"

17.2

Al-Amin Hossain to Gayle, no run, good yorker on off, Gayle digs it out straight to extra cover

17.3

Al-Amin Hossain to Gayle, 1 run, another good yorker. Gayle gets some space to get under it and cracks it straight to long off for a single

17.4

Al-Amin Hossain to Samuels, 1 run, he stands in the crease and looks to punch this through off, but gets an inside edge past his stumps

Mahesh Balaji: "Imagine that full toss was all the opening that Gayle needed and he hits about 50-odd runs in the next three overs.. WI reach 200+ and win comfortably.. Suddenly, again all is well with the world!!"

17.5

Al-Amin Hossain to Gayle, FOUR, good delivery, a low full toss on off, but that is all Gayle needs to whack it over the umpire's head for a boundary..

17.6

Al-Amin Hossain to Gayle, 1 run, length delivery, he swings across the line and drags it to deep midwicket for a single

Humair Amil: "@Sid - I agree. You also don't need to have 11 Johnty Rhodes in the side, as long as you do the basic right you can be a good fielding side. It's disappointing to see that BD are not even doing the basics right after so many years in international cricket."

End of over 18 (8 runs) West Indies 151/2 (RR: 8.38)

    • CH Gayle 48 (47b 3x4 2x6)
    • MN Samuels 15 (18b 1x4)
    • Al-Amin Hossain 3-0-19-0
    • Shakib Al Hasan 3-0-21-1

Just two more overs.. Ziaur Rahman comes in for the first time..

18.1

Ziaur Rahman to Gayle, OUT, well judged by Tamim at long off! This is a good take. On another day, this would have sailed into the stands, but Gayle gets under it and hits it as far as the boundary. Tamim takes an overhead catch, then realises the momentum is taking him over the rope, so lobs the ball up, goes out, comes back, and completes the catch. End of a painful innings from Gayle

CH Gayle c Tamim Iqbal b Ziaur Rahman 48 (74m 48b 3x4 2x6) SR: 100.00

18.2

Ziaur Rahman to Samuels, (no ball) 2 runs, this could have been a run out! The batsman pushed the full ball straight to short third man and called for a single. He was going to be well short, but the bowler, who was not close to the stumps, misses it at close range.. What more, he has overstepped too

Free-hit!

18.2

Ziaur Rahman to Samuels, no run, it's a good ball now, full and wide outside off and Samuels misses his inside out drive

Samuels has been a shadow of himself too.. just like Gayle

18.3

Ziaur Rahman to Samuels, 1 run, full and wide outside off, the batsman squeezes it to short third man where a misfield allows for a single

18.4

Ziaur Rahman to Sammy, FOUR, another poor effort by the fielder! It's Mahmudullah, who waits for this lofted drive at long-off - it's an overhead effort - and it goes through his hand .. Sub-standard fielding this.. It drops inside the boundary..

18.5

Ziaur Rahman to Sammy, FOUR, another drop by Mahmudullah at long-off! What's going on.. this was a difficult chance though. Sammy drives this inside out towards wide long off, but the fielder got both hands to it.. Pushes it to the boundary to rub salt on his own wounds

Kamal: "They keep talking about how in the subcontinent, kids dream of becoming a batsman more often than consider the thought of becoming a bowler. It has got nothing to do lack of skills or fitness - they know that they will be stuck with excruciatingly substandard ground fielding and catching, so why not take advantage of it as a batsman than suffer because of it as a bowler!"

18.6

Ziaur Rahman to Sammy, FOUR, short ball, gets the top edge, but this one sails over the keeper's head.. This is cruel for Ziaur..He has bowled a good over, but he has been hit for three boundaries

TimesRGud: "17 extras, atleast 2 dropped dollies and countless fielding errors and WI on 155. Thats how bad WI has been"

End of over 19 (16 runs) West Indies 167/3 (RR: 8.78)

    • DJG Sammy 12 (3b 3x4)
    • MN Samuels 18 (21b 1x4)
    • Ziaur Rahman 1-0-16-1
    • Al-Amin Hossain 3-0-19-0

Al-Amin to bowl the last one

19.1

Al-Amin Hossain to Samuels, OUT, the catch is taken! Gazi at extra cover makes up for Mahmudullah's mistakes by taking a simple chance. It was a touch slower outside off and Samuels, who struggled today too, punches it straight to the fielder

MN Samuels c Sohag Gazi b Al-Amin Hossain 18 (31m 22b 1x4 0x6) SR: 81.81

Bob-SA: "The West Indies have probably posted a winning total here, but neither side is really covering themselves in glory. Might be an interesting run chase."

19.2

Al-Amin Hossain to Russell, OUT, another one goes down! Russell throws his bat at this slower one and sends this miles high towards long off, where Shakib - who is no Mahmudullah - settles under it and makes sure he gobbles it up...

AD Russell c Shakib Al Hasan b Al-Amin Hossain 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Al-Amin on a hat-trick..

19.3

Al-Amin Hossain to Sammy, 1 bye, he swings and misses.. A wonderful legcutted that beats the outside edge as Sammy swings his bat

19.4

Al-Amin Hossain to Bravo, OUT, whoaa Tamim! this is a stunner at short third man! Bravo looks to drive this through extra cover, gets a thick outside edge and Tamim - he flies to his right and plucks this from thin air. What a catch that one - great one-hander -- it was high too! What a contrasting day. Bravo falls for a first-baller again.

DJ Bravo c Tamim Iqbal b Al-Amin Hossain 0 (2m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

19.5

Al-Amin Hossain to Ramdin, 1 bye, excellent over till now! This one is a nice legcutter that beats the bat

19.6

Al-Amin Hossain to Sammy, 2 runs, OUT, another chance! Another drop! The batsman gets a thick outside edge and Ziaur at point is no Tamim - he tries to leap for an over head chance, but is not able to complete that.. Still a good effort. What more, they pick up a bonus wicket as the batsmen look for a non-existent third.

D Ramdin run out 0 (3m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Excellent finish from Al-Amin Hossain! Very strange innings from West Indies despite them having put a decent total on the board. Smith was motoring along while Gayle stayed in his shell. But everyone waited, and waited, and waited for him to explode.. Bangladesh won't have anything to complain. Take that Smith innings out and Bangladesh's poor fielding, this total could have been far far less. Back for the second inning in ten.

Lucas: "This has got to have been one of the worst batting performances to make it to a 170+ score in Twenty/20 history. "

Anuj Sharma: "And we were laughing @ Dutch. This is a real comic match between 2 test playing nations, I am sure Dutch must be much more relaxed now. 4 ducks, countless drops and misfields, 19 extras and somehow scrappy WI posted 170+. Hilarious :)))))"

SaZ: "As stinky as Bangladesh fielding has been, I still think WI performance has been the worst of all matter. I know that it sounds harsh, but if it wasn't for BD fielders blessing of dropped catches and allowed boundaries, the scorecard would have looked a lot worse. Wake up WI!!"

Rahman: "At the risk of being thought senile....is Al-Amin the Dale Steyn of Bangladesh? 4 wickets in the last over. He brought a smile back to some faces anyway."

End of over 20 (4 runs) West Indies 171/7

    • DJG Sammy 14 (5b 3x4)
    • Al-Amin Hossain 4-0-21-3
