World T20, 2nd Semi-Final: India v South Africa at Dhaka, Apr 4, 2014
World T20 - 2nd semi final
India won by 6 wickets (with 5 balls remaining)
Played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur (neutral venue)
4 April 2014 - night match (20-over match)

Rohit Shamra takes first strike. Duminy to bowl with that new Harbhajan action. He will go round the wicket

South Africa are done with the huddle. The weather is still clear. India will soon begin an attempt at the highest successful chase against South Africa. Fletcher having what seems a jolly chat with Rahane. Du Plessis has a chat with Duminy. I think Duminy might open the bowling

Bulf: "At 107/2 I thought 190-200 was on for SA. India came back at the 16th and 17th over. Hope for an interesting 2nd innings."

0.1

Duminy to RG Sharma, no run, flighted first delivery, pushed to mid-of. Nice sound off the bat

0.2

Duminy to RG Sharma, 1 run, on a length, middle and leg, worked away to square leg for one

Yuvraj Singh is also padded up

0.3

Duminy to Rahane, FOUR, Rahane is off right away. Just a touch short of a length, just a touch wide, and he rocks back to crunch it past cover for four all along the ground

0.4

Duminy to Rahane, 1 run, full, just outside off, pushed wide of mid-on for one

There hasn't been a slip in for Duminy

0.5

Duminy to RG Sharma, FOUR, South Africa had a few of those early. India get one too. And this would have been swallowed by the slip. On a length, outside off, Rohit pushes at an offbreak, but this doesn't turn and takes the edge for four

0.6

Duminy to RG Sharma, FOUR, the spin start hasn't quite worked. Well it might have had if the slip was in. Rohit down the wicket to this ball, reaches the pitch of it, and drives it straight of mid-off for four. high-quality shot. A mere push, really

End of over 1 (14 runs) India 14/0 (159 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 14.00, RRR: 8.36)

    • RG Sharma 9 (4b 2x4)
    • AM Rahane 5 (2b 1x4)
    • JP Duminy 1-0-14-0

Albie Morkel to open the bowling. That's a surprise. No slip on

1.1

Morkel to Rahane, no run, on a length, no room, pushed to short straight midwicket. The fielder nearly collides with the non-striker. Parnell is the man

1.2

Morkel to Rahane, 1 run, short of a length, just outside off, worked square of point for one

1.3

Morkel to RG Sharma, FOUR, crunched away. This is a poor delivery. A strange defensive cagey start by South Africa to bowl Albie at the top of the innings. This is short, wide, and sits up for a soft boundary

1.4

Morkel to RG Sharma, no run, on a length, just outside off, defended back to him

SRD: "I have closely seen Rohit Sharma today.. I promise that he will fire today"

1.5

Morkel to RG Sharma, no run, good-looking drive off a length ball, on the up, but straight to cover

1.6

Morkel to RG Sharma, FOUR, this is poor bowling. Short, at Albie's pace. Rohit is forward, but he can still pull it clean over midwicket

End of over 2 (9 runs) India 23/0 (150 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 11.50, RRR: 8.33)

    • RG Sharma 17 (8b 4x4)
    • AM Rahane 6 (4b 1x4)

    • JP Duminy 1-0-14-0

How different. India went for the wickets with their fields. South Africa have sat back and opened with part-timers. Have they allowed the Indian nerves to settle?

Finally we have Steyn. And finally a slip

2.1

Steyn to Rahane, 1 wide, and he bowls a wide down leg

2.1

Steyn to Rahane, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, dabbed away to third man

You can see that after that soft start India aren't under great pressure facing Steyn

2.2

Steyn to RG Sharma, 1 run, short of a length, outside off, soft hands, gets another single

2.3

Steyn to Rahane, 1 run, slower ball, 129ks, short of a length, outside off, steered away to third man for one

2.4

Steyn to RG Sharma, no run, that's a beauty. That's a Test ball. On a length, outside off, swinging away. Beats the bat as he pushes tentatively

2.5

Steyn to RG Sharma, SIX, Rohit takes Steyn on. This is brave batting. He makes room, gets inside a short ball, and upper-cuts it for six over the shorter boundary

Slip goes out

2.6

Steyn to RG Sharma, no run, outswinger this time, on a length, on off, defended from the crease

End of over 3 (10 runs) India 33/0 (140 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 11.00, RRR: 8.23)

Siva Kumar: "It all comes to the confidence of the Indian batsmen here. Except Steyn, other bowlers shouldn't be much of a threat unless the batting crumbles under pressure"

Hendricks into the attack now

3.1

Hendricks to Rahane, 1 wide, and he starts with a wide down the leg side

Chris: "Is Faf's captaincy inexperience going to cost SA here? Looks like the Proteas going back to conservative approach that hasn't worked for us in the past."

3.1

Hendricks to Rahane, FOUR, short, wide, angling away, even though Rahane is on the front foot, he manages to cut it cover point. Poor bowling all right, but solid batting from India

3.2

Hendricks to Rahane, no run, looks to cut this, but this isn't short enough or wide enough. Gets a bottom edge to point

3.3

Hendricks to Rahane, no run, slower ball, on a length, gets another bottom edge as Rahane looks to open the face

3.4

Hendricks to Rahane, 1 run, slower short ball, that's incredibly slow, at 106ks, Rahane connects with the third pull he attempts. Gets a single to short fine

3.5

Hendricks to RG Sharma, OUT, Rohit is gone. He tries to hit this on the up and straight down the ground. The ball is a touch shorter than he expects and he skies it. This has gone nowhere. Faf comes around from mid-on to complete the catch

RG Sharma c du Plessis b Hendricks 24 (17m 13b 4x4 1x6) SR: 184.61

3.6

Hendricks to Rahane, 1 wide, big wide outside off. Angled too far across

3.6

Hendricks to Rahane, 1 run, on a length, on off, pushed to mid-off for one

4.1

4.1

Parnell to Rahane, 1 run, on a length, on the pads, worked away for a single

A slip in

4.2

Parnell to Kohli, no run, good pace there, short of a length, 145ks, just outside off, right behind it in defence

4.3

Parnell to Kohli, 1 run, short of a length, pitched outside leg, worked away to leg for another single

4.4

Parnell to Rahane, 2 runs, that's a little edgy. He drags this short ball from outside off, doesn't get all of it, but it flies wide of midwicket

4.5

Parnell to Rahane, no run, Rahane shimmies away to go over cover, but is beaten by a shortish delivery. Slightly slower. Still 140ks despite rolling his fingers over it

4.6

Parnell to Rahane, SIX, oh that's clean as a whistle. Jumps out of crease, turns this short ball into a length one, and drives it inside-out for a flat six over cover. Beautiful shot

End of over 5 (11 runs) India 52/1 (121 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 10.40, RRR: 8.06)

    • AM Rahane 23 (15b 2x4 1x6)

5.2

Hendricks to Rahane, 1 wide, slower ball, too short and too wide outside off. Called too

5.2

Hendricks to Rahane, no run, looks to run this shortish ball to third man, and is beaten by the angle

5.4

Hendricks to Rahane, 1 run, slower ball, bouncer too, Rahane pulls it down to leg for one. he is bowling them back of the hand too

Round the wicket goes Hendricks

5.5

Hendricks to Kohli, 1 run, slower ball again, short outside off, he rolls his wrists on this, gets a single to third man

Back over the wicket

5.6

Hendricks to Rahane, no run, short of a length, quick one this time, Rahane is on his toes to work this to leg. This doesn't go too far so Kohli turns down the single

Hendricks to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, on a length, outside off, he steers it to third man for one

Back to 10 an over. In comes Raina. This could be to keep the right-left combination going. Parnell to bowl

16.1

Parnell to Raina, no run, bowls the slower short ball, Raina premeditates the move away from the stumps, leaves this alone. Looks for a wide call but this isn't

16.2

Parnell to Raina, 1 wide, this one is wide, though. Another slower ball. Too far outside off

16.2

Parnell to Raina, SIX, short ball with fine leg up, and too soft a short ball. Only ribs high. Pulled away over short fine leg for six. This is a top edge, but has gone the distance

16.4

Parnell to Raina, FOUR, two edges in one over, and Raina gets 10 off them. Poor choices from Parnell, though. Slower bouncer, but too wide, and the edge goes fine of third man

16.5

Parnell to Raina, FOUR, that's 14 off edges in this over. Raina is carrying edges of god here. Makes room, clearly late on the full ball, gets the inside edge to the right of the keeper. Kohli doesn't mind how they are coming. He is super pumped

17.4

Steyn to Kohli, no run, lovely outswinger, just outside off, Kohli looks to drive to cover, but is beaten by the movement away

17.5

Steyn to Kohli, 2 runs, short of a length, angling in, pushed towards deep midwicket, Kohli puts pressure for the second, Amla misfields running in

18.1

Hendricks to Raina, FOUR, short of a length, angling in, Raina gets inside the line, pulls it down, beats short fine leg

South Africa kissing goodbye to their 10th semi-final. They have won only one in 10 tries before today

In comes MS Dhoni. If South Africa had any hopes going up with that wicket, they would have been crushed by the sight of the man coming in

18.4

Hendricks to Kohli, FOUR, and India don't even need Kohli. Short, waist high, poor bowling really at that pace. Pulled away for four through square leg

18.5

Hendricks to Kohli, 1 run, slower bouncer, Kohli shimmies down and pulls this to deep midwicket for one

18.6

Hendricks to Dhoni, no run, slower short ball, Dhoni stand still, and leaves it for Kohli to finish with a defensive shot off the last ball

End of over 19 (9 runs) India 172/4 (1 run required from 6 balls, RR: 9.05, RRR: 1.00)

    • MS Dhoni 0 (1b)
    • V Kohli 68 (43b 4x4 2x6)
    • BE Hendricks 4-0-31-2
    • DW Steyn 3-0-32-0

Srinivas Goud: ".... and Dhoni makes sure the chase goes into last over :)"

19.1

Steyn to Kohli, FOUR, Kohli finishes it off. And he lets out a roar. What a knock under high pressure. What a chaser he is. This is like Yuvraj finishing that quarter-finals chase off against Australia. What release of pressure. He has soaked it all in, and ends it with a flick past midwicket

All right. That was one tense match. You could see that tension on Kohli's face, and in how he exulted after every shot that came off. He nearly hurt Raina when he punched him after a four. The stat of the night is, Kohli faced just three dots. That is a champion batsman right there. So the final is set up. A repeat of the 50-over World Cup. India v Sri Lanka. Totally deserving finalists. A cracker this is going to be. Fun bringing this game to you. This is Sidharth Monga singing off. Cheers

"I thought we had batted excellently," says Faf du Plessis. "It was a very good score against a good attack on this wicket. Ash bowled really well. Credit to our batters to put up a good total. Runs on the board in the semi-final is what you ask for. The bad thing is, MS and his team know how to chase. They have done it many times. They pace their innings really well. Virat played a great innings. You have to credit. I thought we could have been better with the ball. The extras we conceded. If you have to win the World Cup, you have to get those one per-centers right. Unfortunately tonight, you can expect about five wides under pressure, but nine is too much. An up-and-down campaign for us. Our guys fought brilliantly, but India deserve to be in the final."

"There was a sense of calm in the dressing room when we went out to bat," says MS Dhoni. "Most of the thoughts were positive. Everybody saw that the wicket was better than those we have played on, and they believed they could chase this down. It is not just the self-belief, but the belief in each other that is crucial. There are not many who are as consistent as Virat. It is great to have him at No. 3. He grabs his opportunities. Something everyone needs to learn from him. Ashwin was brilliant. We kept him back for AB. We didn't want to give him pace. The least I could offer Virat was the winning shot so I played out the last ball of the 19th over without a run."

And Kohli talks a good game. Doesn't try to hide his emption. Doesn't try to hide how he works the game out. How honest to admit he was wary of Steyn bowling the last over. How educational to always thick of runs and overs to go. "Hundred in 10 overs sounds easier than 100 off 60 balls."

"Today was one of those days when I had to keep my cool," says Virat Kohli, the Man of the Match. "Against a world-class attack, with boundaries not coming, it wasn't coming. In Twenty20, I look at target in number of runs and overs to go, not runs and balls to go. Overs make it looks easier. I had to keep telling myself that I could make up later. I told Raina let's try to finish in the 19th over. We don't want to give Dale eight runs to defend in the final over. He can bowl six good yorkers. I wasn't feeling too good before this game, had some body weakness, so it is good to go out and let it all out (with that celebration)."

Oh what a finish. Virat Kohli does it again. South Africa wanted to take it deep, but Kohli calculated this chase perfectly, and took the odd risk at the right time. This is Kohli's time. He is making the most of it. Yuvraj Singh jumps out of the dugout, hugs Kohli, lifts him up in his arms. Kohli has to be one of the three best batsmen in the world today

India have never lost a semi-final under Dhoni. They win another. South Africa have now lost 10 of their 11 semi-finals. Were they too passive? Opening with Wayne Parnell. Not trying to take Kohli out early by bringing Steyn back on? Bowling Parnell to Raina when he just came in? They will look back at these moves and have sleepless nights
