World T20 - Final

India v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)

Ok. On your marks. Teams are ready in the middle. Rohit Sharma will be on strike against Kula. ONe slip in place

7.30 pm Wonderful, the teams are here for the national anthems. An hour ago, it looked so unlikely. But we have a full game on our hands.

"If the trend of the last T20 world cups continue, Srilanka should be winning this game, as they hosted the last world T20. West Indies and England have created this trend in the last two T20 world cups. Result of too much contemplating waiting for the match to start!!!" ---- Sankar, not sure what to make of it, but that pattern didn't quite help South Africa in 2009.

7.10 pm Toss Sri Lanka have won the toss and they will bowl. Thisara Perera comes in for Seekkuge Prasanna. Malinga says, they want to do something special for Mahela and Sanga.

Dhoni says he was looking to bowl as well as they have chased well - they have batted first only once in five games this tournament. India are going with the same XI.

Faisal: "Smart move by Sri Lanka... blunt that Kohli chasing average."

Clear skies now.

Daniel Alexande: "Emotional day for we Sri Lankans, Can't even think of a SL cricket match without Mahela and Sangakkara. Hope they'l play other formats for two more years " ---- They will still be around in ODIs and Tests Daniel. Meanwhile, here is a picture of the crowd assembled in Galle Face in Colombo to watch the game on a giant screen.

7.00 pm The Sri Lankan team are stretching in the outfield, while the Indian team is playing football. Ten minutes to go for the toss. Mahela, in a short feature on TV, says T20 took him closer to his roots as he used to play freely when he was a schoolboy. What a legend! He is the second-highest run-getter in all T20Is.

6.45 pm The toss will take place at 7.10 pm and the match will start at 7.40 pm, without any reduction in overs. The players are in the ground warming up now.

Uwaisul Karnain: "Waited so many hours impatiently for the start of the game. It seems like I have to wait another half an hour or so for the toss (7.10 pm local time). Compared to the fact that we have been waiting for 18 long years for a World Cup triumph as Sri Lankan fans, this wait is not a concern at all! India and Sri Lanka are not only the best 2 teams of this tournament, they are also the top 2 teams according to the ICC T20I rankings at present. Fittingly the winner of this final will not only become the World T20 title winners, but also will get to the top of the T20 rankings. "

6.30 pm Some good news now. The covers are being taken off. Four super-soppers already working on the outfield.

6.15 pm It's only 15 minutes to the time for toss but there is not much change in the ground situation. The covers are still on, but the wind had picked up a bit.. Hopefully it can blow away the clouds.

"hello, how does the spare day work? if they shorten the game and still get only a few over in, they continue tomorrow?" --- Alex, as far as I understand, the organisers will try to finish the game today itself whatever the length. If they are still not able to, then they start all over again continue the game tomorrow.

wajju: "A minimum five overs per side match is possible in order to have a result today itself. It can also happen that in a curtailed match, one team bats say 12 overs but the other team needs to bat a minimum of five overs before the Duckworth-Lewis rain rule is applicable. In case the second team bats less than five overs, then the match will start afresh on April 7. However, as per weather forecast, there are chances of rainfall tomorrow as well."

Dr. Tam: "Sammy had mentioned about the 'divine intervention' after the semi final weather saga. We again see showers tonight. Is it yet again some sort of divine intervention? Overcast conditions to dilute India's lethal spin attack, I guess? Just trying to follow 'The Sammy phenomenon.' "

Sindhur: "Lets hope for the best. I feel Mahela and sangakkara need a great farewell. Bcoz they are the ones that helped Srilanka to be in the main stream after the 96 WC team retired. The only other players to create impact are Malinga and Dilshan to some extent. Sl should win this match and give them a great exit."

Jiten Surtani: "If giving a grand exit to star players is what motivates players (2011 - India did it for Sachin), then I am a worried Indian fan !"

6.00 pm Abhishek Purohit says the rain's picked a bit again after a brief lull which saw the super-soppers out. Four-fifths of the ground still under cover.

5.40 pm The entire ground is being covered, says Abhishek Purohit, our man at the ground. Not heavy, but steady rain, he says. It's still bright to one side of the ground and the clouds may clear in some time.

"As per the forecast, The Rain is Predicted only between 5-6 PM. So hopefully rain will stay during match time. Fingers Crossed.." ---- Thanks Faisal, but weathermen have a tendency to surprise.

Nikky from Dubl: "It rains 13 months in a year in Ireland and we trust accuweather.com for the forecast. Going by it; Dhaka evening looks clear from 6 pm onwards - so I'm 99 percent sure that we will have a clear game tonight. All the best to both the teams... :-)"

5.30 pm Still an hour and a half to go for the match. Australia Women have just completed a hat-trick of World T20 titles with a comfortable win against archrivals England. Rain was supposed to be a lingering factor when they were out for the toss a couple of hours ago, but there is no sign of that for now.. We don't want it anywhere close.. I hope the collective prayers of all cricket fans can keep the rains away. Spoke too soon - Bad news to start the day. Covers are being hauled in.

"This game will definitely gonna have impact on Sri Lankan and Indian economy..my home town in Sri Lanka looks like Holiday eve..shops are being closed..Giant Screens on," IamRifard, the only business I see taking a hit this evening are the cinemas. It's a Sunday after all.

"Who wins in the case of a wash out? Althought it would be very ironic if it was a 5 over match, just like how the champion trophy was a t20 match!" ---- Venkat, we have a reserve day at hand. If there is still no game, then the trophy gets shared.

5.00 pm Check out this pre-match picture. MS Dhoni, relaxed as ever - and why not? His team has not really been stretched in the tournament. Use some fancy imaging filters or some cropping tool or just your imagination, and for a moment take out Lasith Malinga from the picture.. it seems like Dhoni is posing after winning the trophy. He just seems unfazed by the pressure.

Now focus on Malinga, on his expression. No familiar smile. Just steely determination written all over his face and a firmer grip on the trophy. A couple of matches ago, he didn't know he would be captaining the side in the final, but here he is.. And he has talked about that "winning feeling" in the camp.

Maybe I am reading too much into this photo. The point is that India might be coming in as the stronger side into the final, but Sri Lanka, they have an extra incentive to win it for their legends, who are playing their last T20 games.

Mahela and Sanga have been around forever and despite the game transforming in the last decade, they have managed themselves better than most in keeping the old-world charm relevant in the new fast-paced environment. Can Malinga rally his troops to do it for the senior pros? Whatever the result, some hearts will break.

(My only gripe is it's blue v blue. Why can't team's kit makers get more imaginative with uniforms or with colours? But never mind, this is off topic)

Excellent start this by Sri Lanka. They have not given anything away

4.5

Senanayake to Kohli, no run, almost a chance of run out at non-striker's! This was hit straight to Malinga at square leg but Rohit was already halfway down..The throw just bounced a bit awkwardly for the bowler..Would have been tricky

Another change, now it's The Rangana

6.1

9.6

Mathews to Kohli, SIX, slower ball, but this one is full enough and now Kohli goes for a big slog! He hasn't got all hit bat behind it but he manages to beat the fielder at deep midwicket. For a moment, he would have been interested, but it clears him in the end

Aditya Pidapart: "Kohli's numbers batting first are indicative of his batting form in Tests. 6 centuries highest of 119. He finds it hard to bat without a lighthouse around. He seems a bit lost. Somehow unable to bat purely for the sake of batting on and on without a specific target. Even here he seems a bit antsy."

End of over 10 (14 runs) India 64/1 (RR: 6.40)

Goes over the wicket for the first time

11.2

Senanayake to Kohli, no run, the batsman pushes this flatter delivery straight to midwicket

Kamran: "I was wondering that after being benched for most of the tournament, Herath needed to prove that the NZ match wasn't a one-off fluke. His first over didn't do much to dissuade me; but he's come back remarkably well in the next two."

11.3

Senanayake to Kohli, 2 runs, comes down the pitch and chips it over the non-striker's head, still poor timing from Kohli and long on comes around and cuts it off

Malinga to Kohli, 2 runs, this is nicely driven to deep extra cover, all along the ground, for a couple. It was full and it was wide outside off too

13.4

Malinga to Kohli, 1 run, it's full but it's too wide, easily punched to deep cover for a single that brings yet another half-century for Kohli. he keeps working like a well-oiled machine..

Pawan: "These next few overs with Malinga on are absolutely crucial. If he goes for a lot then The Indian batsmen will put up a big score. If he can get a wicket or two here then the game will be well within Sri Lanka's reach."

13.5

Malinga to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, full and on the stumps, but not quite a yorker, gives Yuvraj some space to squeeze it out to deep cover

pratik: "No doubt yuvi is a great T20 player. But what we have seen in this tournament is that he takes his own time to settle down as against raina who gets into attacking mode very quickly. Wouldn't it had been good to send him ahead of Yuvi at this crucial point."

13.6

Malinga to Kohli, FOUR, full and too wide! Malinga is getting the length right but the line is completely off.. This is too wide and all Kohli has to do is get some bat on it, which he does, to pick up a boundary to third man

14.6

Senanayake to Yuvraj Singh, no run, comes down the pitch but still can't get the ball away, gets hit on the pads as the bowler fires it in

Sudipta: "@pratik, dhoni is thinking ahead here. If raina comes before yuvi, then yuvi might have to come at around 15-16 over mark. No time for him to settle; so potentially a walking wicket there. Rather let him come early when there is time to settle. Raina can anyway play busily even if he comes at 15-16 over mark."

Kulasekara to Kohli, FOUR, follows it up with a murderous drive through cover.. The fielder couldn't get down in time.. hits it so hard this Kohli, using all timing and a lot of wrists

Mahela comes over for a chat with Kula

15.3

Kulasekara to Kohli, FOUR, this could be a drop here! Sena at deep midwicket misjudges this one.. It was a slower delivery and the batman went for a full-blooded pull, he doesn't get much timing.. Sena comes in a touch and it clears him.. poor judgement from the fielder

15.4

Kulasekara to Kohli, 1 run, this one is hammered down the ground.. What violence! Thisara does well at long on to keep this one in..

15.5

Kulasekara to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, now Yuvi brings out a crisp drive to deep extra cover off a full delivery, a single only this time

15.6

Kulasekara to Kohli, no run, a good response from Kula! bowls a good yorker outside off and Kohli fails to make contact

ANANTH: "Malinga would be counting every single run that Kohli has scored after he was dropped. Think the nerves got to the Slinga being captain and the batsman being Kohli, add to that Mahela/Sanga's last T20 game and this being the final to top all of this"

End of over 16 (16 runs) India 111/2 (RR: 6.93)
V Kohli    70* (50b 5x4 4x6)      KMDN Kulasekara    3-0-26-0
Yuvraj Singh    7* (12b)      SMSM Senanayake    3-0-18-0

Sena to bowl his last

16.1

Senanayake to Yuvraj Singh, no run, short and wide, he cuts it and finds the man at point

16.2

Senanayake to Yuvraj Singh, no run, makes room to punch this through off, but it bounces a touch extra and beats the bat.. and the top of off

16.3

Senanayake to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, this time he comes down and thumps it back at the bowler, who sticks his hand out to his right, but cannot hold on to a tough chance

16.4

Senanayake to Kohli, 1 run, he comes down the track and punches this firmly to long on

16.5

Senanayake to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, here comes the slog sweep, but the bowler slowed it down.. Yuvraj get a bottom edge to the leg side

16.6

Senanayake to Kohli, 1 run, he comes down the pitch and punches it to midwicket where Dilshan's fumble allows a single

End of over 17 (4 runs) India 115/2 (RR: 6.76)
V Kohli    72* (52b 5x4 4x6)      SMSM Senanayake    4-0-22-0
Yuvraj Singh    9* (16b)      KMDN Kulasekara    3-0-26-0

17.1

Malinga to Kohli, 1 run, this is a good yorker now! Just outside off and Kohli can only dig it out to extra cover for a single

Terrence: "kohli seems to be in sammy mode while yuvi is doing his best to imitate samuels. "

17.2

Malinga to Yuvraj Singh, no run, another good yorker outside off, Yuvi looks to guide it to off but gets a bottom edge to the keeper

Professor: "It's been disappointing to see Yuvraj's performance in this tournament........He seriously needs to pick up form in domestic events before making it to the national squad. National squad not the place for 'finding' form. One innings against Oz doesn't change this situation. Wonder hoe many runs he's cost India in this final?"

17.3

Malinga to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, he comes down the pitch and manages to get some bat this time, squeezes this to third man

Sree: "This is so sad to see from Yuvi. The 17 balls he took to score the 9 runs, Raina and Dhoni could have scored atleast 15 runs more. The 17th and 18th overs are not the time to guide and cut. He should look to attack. Or atleast make sure Kohli faces every ball that he can. "

17.4

Malinga to Kohli, 1 run, takes a step down and drives it beautifully through cover, where Thiri makes an excellent diving save..

17.5

Malinga to Yuvraj Singh, no run, another yorker outside off, again Yuvi fails to get bat on it.. This is embarrassing for the batsman. Some frustration in the dug out as well

17.6

Malinga to Yuvraj Singh, 1 run, comes down the pitch and drives this full delivery off the toe end to deep cover for a single. He keeps the strike

Malinga: "Malinga saved 2 overs for himself in the final 3. Won't be easy to make too many big hits now. Anything below 150 will be a good chase if Sri Lanka bats well. Great job to keep the powerhouse Indians at bay!"

End of over 18 (4 runs) India 119/2 (RR: 6.61)
Yuvraj Singh    11* (20b)      SL Malinga    3-0-22-0
V Kohli    74* (54b 5x4 4x6)      SMSM Senanayake    4-0-22-0

Kula comes back

18.1

Kulasekara to Yuvraj Singh, OUT, a full toss is hit straight to long-off! Not sure if Sri Lanka really wanted that wicket at this stage. A relief for the Indian bench though. A man in form could have hit this ball anywhere, but Yuvraj chips it straight to the fielder

Yuvraj Singh c NLTC Perera b Kulasekara 11 (30m 21b 0x4 0x6) SR: 52.38

Kohli on strike.. Dhoni comes in

18.2

Kulasekara to Kohli, 1 run, full and wide outside off.. Kohli was shaping to play a sweep but adjusts late to guide it to third man

18.3

Kulasekara to Dhoni, 1 run, another full and wide outside off, Dhoni punches it down to long on with a cross-batted shot

18.4

Kulasekara to Kohli, no run, this is good bowling! He keeps it full and wide outside off, Kohli stretches but can't reach it.. this is inside the marker too

18.5

Kulasekara to Kohli, 1 run, another one wide outside off, very wide.. Kohli manages to take it on the full, but can only slice it to deep point

18.6

Kulasekara to Dhoni, 1 leg bye, this hits the toe off the batsman and this was almost as wide outside off as it can be, shows you how Dhoni was trying to play some kind of a sweep.. They pick up a single to third man.. But this is excellent stuff from Kula

Only 12 in the last three

End of over 19 (4 runs) India 123/3 (RR: 6.47)
MS Dhoni    1* (2b)      KMDN Kulasekara    4-0-29-1
V Kohli    76* (57b 5x4 4x6)      SL Malinga    3-0-22-0

Malinga comes

19.1

Malinga to Dhoni, no run, they can't get a bat on it.. This is full and wide and it slips under the bat

19.2

Malinga to Dhoni, 1 wide, this one is fired full and wide, a bit too wide this time

19.2

Malinga to Dhoni, 2 byes, this one is closer to the off stump and slips under the bat again as Dhoni looks to play the helicopter.. But this beats the keeper too and they come back for a second

Kohli watches from the other end..

19.3

Malinga to Dhoni, no run, beautiful bowling! Dhoni looks for the helicopter, but this is a good yorker outside off, it slips under the bat again

Ziadh: "seems like Youvi's wicket did not bring any good to India. Good death bowling!!!"

19.4

Malinga to Dhoni, 2 runs, wonderful yorker, this time the batsman gets some bat on it, but can only push it as far as midwicket.. they come back for two.. so no Kohli in the last over..

Don: "@Ziad - Even Dhoni can't pull out a miracle coming in with one over to go and face Malinga, just asking too much off him. Might have been completely different if it wasn't for that yuvi innings. SL looking like they're going to walk away with this world cup, hopefully it'll be close match."

19.5

Malinga to Dhoni, 1 run, full and wide.. it's only a single as Dhoni digs it out to cover to give Kohli the last ball

19.6

Malinga to Kohli, 1 run, OUT, another good yorker, the batsman comes back for the second after pushing it to midwicket, but he was always struggling and direct hit ends his innings

V Kohli run out 77 (75m 58b 5x4 4x6) SR: 132.75

What a dramatic end to the innings! This is way way below par. Excellent bowling at the death by the Sri Lankan bowlers. They stuck to that plan of bowling yorkers wide outside off and frustrated the batsmen. Yuvraj's innings killed all the momentum that India was picking during the middle overs. Take this - Kohli faced just seven balls in the last four overs. No boundaries in the last four overs as well. Excellent work by Sri Lanka to keep India's best batsman away from strike and frustrate the whole team.. Take Kohli's brilliant half-century out and India don't have anything to show. Superb death bowling by Malinga and Kulasekara there. Good tight bowling from Sena too, who was really the one who derailed Yuvraj.

Jayawardena: "Superb bowling by Sri Lanka, holding this Indian team to 130 after 111/2 is no simple feat. They need to make sure that they bat sensibly and don't choke the chase."

Dev: "How Amazing is it to score 19 runs in the last 4 overs batting first especially with the Best hitters in the world. Credit to SL bowlers and of course, Yuvi :-)"

Venkat: "I would put this as Dhoni's worst gamble in World cup final yet...You have Yuvraj in the worst possible form and Dhoni himself with very little match practice...Dhoni should have promoted Raina ahead at number 4. T20 is about momentum cricket and the finals are the place where you nail down the game. Congrats Lanka for capitalizing on the insipid India batting. I hope you guys now go out and finish the match"

Thili: "You got to admire the bowling changes from malinger though..something I haven't seen from other lankan captans "

End of over 20 (7 runs) India 130/4
     SL Malinga    4-0-27-0
MS Dhoni    4* (7b)      KMDN Kulasekara    4-0-29-1
