A packed house at the Beausejour Stadium deserved better than the dismal performance served up by West Indies and Chris Gayle apologised to the fans after the hosts were knocked out of the World Twenty20 with a six-wicket defeat by Australia.
The supporters kept singing until the final run was scored - somewhat fittingly it came when Gayle fired a bouncer over the wicketkeeper's head - but their spirits had taken an early blow when the captain was bowled by Dirk Nannes in the first over. So much rides on Gayle's performances in this team that it was always hard to see how they would fight back, but the nature of the subsequent collapse was depressing.
"There are no excuses and I apologise to the fans for our display in this World Cup but we have to hold our heads high," Gayle said. "The turnout has been brilliant and I must commend them on that, it's just unfortunate that we didn't carry on to the semis. The support was very good and I must say thanks to all the fans.
"We have worked really hard and hopefully in the series coming up [against South Africa] we can give you something to smile about. We worked really hard. We wanted it badly. The commitment is always there, even today in the outfield with the players diving around."
As the batting fell apart against Mitchell Johnson and Steven Smith, Gayle watched forlornly from the dugout with an air of a man who had seen it all before. During the tournament he has pleaded for help from his team-mates for some batting support but yet again no-one delivered
"It's severe pressure and a lot is on my shoulders. I was hoping to get someone to take some of that pressure in the batting department but it didn't happen," he said. "I tried my best, I'm not saying everyone else didn't, but sometimes I try too hard and get myself in a bit of trouble rather than letting it come naturally."
When asked about what quality was missing from the side to make them regularly competitive against the best Gayle had a simple answer. "Consistency, that's the only word I can use right now," he said. "We are on and off, sometimes we turn up and are unbeatable and no team can play us but it doesn't come often. In our batting it can't be just me getting runs, others have to take responsibility.
"There are no problems in the camp, the spirit has been fine but on the field we have been inconsistent. We are trying everything to get that right but it didn't work today."

How come you are not posting my comments and are posting others?Tell me what I am doing wrong.Am I being too critical of certain people,or am I speaking the truth?That is the problem with West Indies cricket and the W.I. selectors they fear the truth.Look what they have selected to play against South Africa.Tell me,did somebody recommended the current bunch of selectors or did they recommend themselves?How are selectors picked?
Posted byI write this article not because I am from the Islands I believe it is time for some one to say it as it is. I have no bad feelings towards players who go to the IPL to make more money. England and other countries can afford to do that because they have put structures in place for the developement of their players but we have not. The two major problems we face in W.I cricket are the politics and team selection. The same set of players that have failed us in longer version of the game are the same ones the selectors are glued to. Are some names too big to drop? when it comes to the other playing nations thy pick you to do a job you fail to deliver you are out. What happen to Mouncine Hodge Hayette Kerien Pollard from Nevis Darring Bravo Shane Shillingford (he is the only player who has taken in excess of 200 first class wickets and scored in excess of 1000 runs with three fiftys and the selectors have paid him no attention) bring back Devon Smith help him to fix his problems

The A team, has the hitters Darren Bravo, Nash, and the bowlers Tonge and pascal. Fletcher was selected on what merit? Ramdin? What about Carlton Baugh??? Should he not have had a spot?? People are calling for Ganga to be captain, is this going to be at the cost of Gayle as a player? If so then NO WAY, Ganga has his merits as a captain, but so does Bravo (DJ). Ganga has proven inefficient an incapable in WI colours and that is the truth. Before you start....I am a trinidadian, but the statistics are there. Well done to him in The ICC champions league, a credible performance, by a regular non performer, that is why it is memorable.
Posted by wanderer1957 on (May 13 2010, 21:26 PM GMT)Why u guys from trinidad continue to blame Gayle for all that wrong with West Indies cricket.guys wake up and smell the coffee,lets looks at performances in the 20/20 and also the preceeding series what have Bravo,Pollard,Ramdin done to deserved selection.also get off Ganga bandwagon he has is chances.Pollard Ramdin and Bravo had enough apportunities to make worthwhile contributioons in the just concluded 20/20 competion and on each occasions they failed.The same cannnot be said of Gayle.
Posted byI cant understand why Wavel hinds was picked and was playing at No 6/7. KP and Bravo had minuscule roles to play. I prayed for WI to beat Aussie event though I am die hard Aussie supporter. In Champions league, Ganga, barath and co displayed excellent cricket , spirit and confidence which is totally lacking in the current WI team under Gayle. King of Cool needs to take time out and bring in a specialist team for T20. Chanderpaul and Sarwan should not be in any T20 squad. They should be looked to play the sheet anchor role like Hussey coming in at 6/7 and not expect them to come all guns blazing against quality pace attack.
Posted by gudolerhum on (May 13 2010, 13:22 PM GMT)The departure of the WI should be no surprise. Gayle believes that by being aloof he demonstrates leadership skills. He is not cool just a poor captain. He does not know how lead or motivate his team. I hate to say this but it appears to me that the WI Board, team management & coach are all incapable of strategic planning to defeat their opponents. They select teams that are not balanced or flexible and do not insist on proper training programs. It is obvious watching them that they are playing Saturday afternoon cricket for huge $$. Why should they stress themselves? Life too sweet as it is. Gayle is a hit or miss, not consistent. Chanders only plays for his avg. Sarwan seems to sleep much of the time. Pollard needs direction & he does not know what is expected. Ramdin lost his way. Taylor looks flat. Fletcher no possible comment. Deonarine out of his depth. Roach needs development. W Hinds never was. The list and the losses go on.
Posted by Ethel on (May 13 2010, 12:43 PM GMT)There is something definitly wrong. The way Pollard got out was not the way to go i could not see myself, playing at thet level, being so inconsistant. In the 70`s playing in Barbados this present W.T team could not beat any of the BCL club in Barbados. Teams win matches not individuals.The only one who seems to be interested in representing the W.I is sammy.

I think the problem was poor selection of the team and improper preparations like Colin Bourde said.West Indies only played matches as a team during the warm up matches.Some of these players are coming off the ipl as well as playing for their respective clubs.They need to get back the feeling of playing for their country and being a west indian cricketer and get it right as a team.You can't put a bunch of good players together and hope they win.Look at Trinidad and Tobago,Most of our players are barely known to the cricketing world if not known at all ! but they play well as a team and they beat some of the biggest named teams in the world.Other teams have been going through the same problem as well (India & SA).This is the consequences of overkill of T20I/T20 cricket.If you look at the teams that have made it to the semis are the teams that have been playing less T20 than the other teams baring sri lanka

I am disappointed not that they lost, but they did not put up a good fight. I also remember the Viv Richards days fondly and want to see some of the fighting spirit and swagger back in the team.
