ICC World Twenty20 - 1st match, Group B

New Zealand v Sri Lanka

New Zealand won by 2 wickets (with 1 ball remaining)

Slight delay. McGlashan: " Problems behind the bowler's arm...looks like an issue with one of the cameras." It's been fixed now, He's going round the wicket

1.00pm: We are ready for the start. The pre-match formalities are done. 29 degrees in Providence now. The New Zealand fielders have taken their positions, Jayawardene and Dilshan are out in the middle. Nathan McCullum will start proceedings, and facing him is Jayawardene. Off we go.

12.55pm: The World Twenty20 trophy has been placed on the field, with the flags being unfurled right beside it. The players are waiting to make their way out. They are walking onto the field now, shirts fluttering. Lots of wind. We will hear the national anthems soon. We start with New Zealand first. An instrumental version.

Nitin: "I am very happy to see Jesse "The Humpty Dumpty" Ryder back into the squad. I am a big fan of this guy and sincerely wishing that he shines in this WC. Ofcourse, that's got nothing to do with the fact that he's my trump for today."

12.50pm There are some children on the outfield now, who will unfurl the two team flags.

We're just done with the IPL, where spinners were quite successful. Notable among them was the offspinner R Ashwin from Chennai. Kanishkaa Balachandran, who spoke to Ashwin, profiles him here.

Rifqi sends us this feedback: "Sri Lanka has selected a good team, with the exception of Ajantha Mendis. Mendis is not the exceptional bowler he was before. My pick would have been Suraj Randiv, he can bat as well !"

12.40pm Gnasher again: " We now have dancers on the outfield as part of the small opening ceremony...oh, off they go again. They were very colourful." They'll do good to better the one in England in 1999.

Far from a full house for the inaugural game, but you could expect one later in the day when West Indies face Ireland.

Jacob Oram is fit and playing for New Zealand. Dinesh Chandimal will strengthen Sri Lanka's batting, and last year's finalists also have Murali and Mendis in their ranks.

12.35pm There is a bit of grass on the pitch on one end. Ian Bishop, doing the pitch report, says that's a bit of an experiment and says it could play double-paced.

12.30pm We are ready for the toss. As you must have read in the preview, the conditions in Providence are known to be conducive to spin. Sri Lanka have won the toss and are batting. Sangakkara expects the pitch to slow down during the second innings, giving his bowlers a chance. Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan will open, and Sanath Jayasuriya will bat at No.6. Chanaka Welegedara, the left-arm seamer, has been included. Vettori says he would have batted had he won. Kyle Mills has been left out, and Nathan McCullum, the offspinner, is likely to open the bowling. Look out for the XIs above.

Gnasher informs us he is also on Twitter - "I've started having a crack at this Twitter lark (apparently all the cool kids use it) so if you feel like it you can follow me. Let's see if I can catch Andrew Miller."

12.23pm Click here to listen live online to every match of the ICC World T20 on Cricket Radio. We're sorry but due to rights restrictions this service is not available to readers in India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, but never mind you can still keep up-to-date on Cricinfo. The commentators include Sunil Gavaskar and Colin Croft.

12.20pm Andrew McGlashan, who's at the ground, sends us this. "The crowd is slowly building up here, and the party stand is being entertained by Shaggy and also a dancing tiger (or it might be a lion, I'm not sure). It's dry and sunny here with a stiff breeze which should hopefully keep any rain away, but as usual in this part of the world it's very humid."

12.15pm local time Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the ICC World Twenty20 2010. New Zealand and Sri Lanka kick things off, and the hosts take on Ireland later in the day in a floodlit game. It's Sid Talya taking you through the commentary for the first match in Providence, Guyana. The conditions seem fine now but there are showers forecast for later in the day, but lets think too much about that now. We will have the toss in a bit, but do read the preview to this game in the meantime. Also, check out the team previews for New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Cricinfo's Andrew McGlashan is in the Caribbean, covering the World Twenty20, and he gives us this preview to the tournament.

Given their bowling line-up comprising Murali and Mendis on this slow pitch, Sri Lanka will think they have done reasonably well and they have Jayawardene to thank for. He played a fluent knock while his partners Dilshan and Sangakkara struggled at the other end. Chandimal gave him good support, but New Zealand, who bat deep, too will back themselves. Join us in ten minutes for the chase.
