ICC World Twenty20 - 4th match, Group A

Bangladesh v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 21 runs

Bangladesh are fielding FIVE spinners today! Whoa, they sure plan to inflict the slow left-arm choke on Pakistan, hope the champions have a plan against it. There was not much spin in the previous game, where bounce did the trick for India. Butt and Akmal Sr. out there for Pakistan. Game time!

Irshadul: "Dont know why Asif not playing but we will surely miss a great bowler today". I agree - he is a wonderful bowler in full flight.

Hello and welcome to game 4 of the World Twenty20 - the second of the Asian double-headers. Pakistan has won the toss and will bat first.

Afridi: "Pitch looks good, so we will like to make first use of it. I will be missing Umar Gul." The big news is that Mohammad Asif is not playing today. For Bangladesh, Mashrafe Mortaza returns from injury, and that's a welcome addition to the Bangladesh team. Shakib-Al-Hasan is not too bothered about the result of the toss.

Pakistan, of course, are defending champions, but they will still be smarting after the shock defeat against Zimbabwe in the warm-up game. Bangladesh specialise in giant-killing so Afridi's boys will do well to be on their guard.

I am Nitin Sundar, your commentator for the day. Sanjay Murari is on scoring duties.

0.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, no run, short of a length outside off, hits the deck hard, negotiated to the off side off the back foot

0.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, straighter this time, angling in, worked away to mid on off the back foot

0.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, FOUR, Boom! Pitched up outside off, Butt leans forward, frees his arms and times it to a nicety, in the air over wide mid on. Shades of Saeed Anwar!

0.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, 1 run, shortens the length, Butt stays back and guides it towards third man

0.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 wide, slips down the leg and will have to bowl one more to finish the over

0.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 leg bye, drifts on to Kamran's pads but he can't capitalise. Half shout as it drifts to the leg side for a leg bye

End of over 1 (10 runs) Pakistan 10/0 (RR: 10.00)
Kamran Akmal    3* (4b)      Mashrafe Mortaza    1-0-9-0

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, no run, short of a length angling in, worked awat to mid on but can't find the gap

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, same shot, made easier by the bowler drifting on to his legs, Kamran said thanks as he swept finer for four more.

1.4

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, no run, finally gets line and length right, Kamran looks to nurdle one to point but cannot get the gap

1.5

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, no run, always a run-out chance when Butt is around! Hit off the back foot to the fielder at midwicket and Butt was away in a hurry. Kamran sends him back, a direct hit might have helped

1.6

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, swung away aggressively towards midwicket, in the air for a single. Average over from Razzak.

End of over 2 (9 runs) Pakistan 19/0 (RR: 9.50)

Salman Butt    5* (2b 1x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    1-0-9-0

2.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, no run, great line and length from Mortaza, and a shade of away movement as well. Kamran was not to the pitch and played on the up, missed the outside edge by little

2.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, fuller this time and Kamran unfurls the full blooded drill down the ground - does not time it too well though

2.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, 1 run, wide outside Butts off stump, and the cut behind point is his bread-and-butter shot. He cannot find the point boundary though, on this occasion

2.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, dropped by Ashraful! Kamran was in no position for the pull-swing, went through with the shot and got a thickish top edge over mid on. Ashraful was back-pedalling and got a hand to it, out-stretched nehind him, but it did not stick. Tough one.

2.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, better pull this time, controlled and along the ground towards square leg

2.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, FOUR, nicely played! Butt was down the track, making room as he sashayed down, opened up the off side and found the gap with his expansive cut. Left-hander's grace all over it!

Salman Butt    10* (4b 2x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-18-0
Kamran Akmal    16* (14b 2x4)      Abdur Razzak    1-0-9-0

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, short of a length outside off, Kamran looks to heave and cleave through point, but has no room to free his arms

3.3

Shafiul Islam to Salman Butt, 1 run, Butt gets forward and punches through the line between mid-on and midwicket who makes a half-stop. He is looking good here

3.4

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, no run, length ball on middle and off, gets forward and drives straight to cover

3.5

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, slower ball, but short and poorly directed. Kamran got inside the line and pulled it away well behind square. Easy four runs

3.6

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, re-programs the radar and gets it outside off, Kamran cuts it away square

End of over 4 (7 runs) Pakistan 35/0 (RR: 8.75)
Kamran Akmal    22* (18b 3x4)      Shafiul Islam    1-0-7-0
Salman Butt    11* (6b 2x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-18-0

4.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, another good yorker, this time Kamran digs it out towards point

4.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, no run, more luck going Pakistan's way. Slower ball, short of a length, decieving Butt who inside-edged the cut and it went perilously close to the furniture

4.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, FOUR, no luck involved this time! At times, when Butt times the ball so well, one wonders if he does justice to his talent. Down the track, played through the line, all timing over mid off, couple of bounces to the boundary

4.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, no run, good reply, shortens the length, pegs Butt back and he tries to guide it square on the off side

4.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, no run, more variation, nice and full slower ball, Butt spots it but does not time or place the square drive too well

End of over 5 (7 runs) Pakistan 42/0 (RR: 8.40)
Salman Butt    15* (10b 3x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-25-0
Kamran Akmal    25* (20b 3x4)      Shafiul Islam    1-0-7-0

Lots of readers asking us the speed of the ball. Unfortunately this does not feature in the telecast.

5.1

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, no run, full on leg stump, following the batsman who digs it out to mid off

5.2

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, no run, Bangladesh have worked hard on their lengths in the last couple of overs. Another good yorker and Kamran plays it back

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, 1 leg bye, tries a dangerous sweep to another full ball on middle and leg, gets it away behind square on the leg. Stifled appeal, but umpire says not out.

End of over 6 (5 runs) Pakistan 47/0 (RR: 7.83)
Kamran Akmal    29* (26b 4x4)      Shafiul Islam    2-0-11-0

6.1

Naeem Islam to Kamran Akmal, no run, looped outside off, worked away behind square straight to the fielder

6.3

Naeem Islam to Salman Butt, 1 run, Butt this time, does better with the carve over the covers, but there is a sweeper in the deep

6.4

Naeem Islam to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, tries to cut, can't time it and gets a thick outside edge very fine. Nice fielding keeps it down to one

6.6

Naeem Islam to Salman Butt, 1 run, on middle and off this time, he comes forward and drives towards deep cover

7.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, mowed from well outside off towards deep midwicket for one

7.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, no run

7.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, FOUR, Butt breaks the shackles! He comes down again, but ensured he would have room even if it was full. He did, and punched it strongly down the ground over Shakib's head and it ran away for four

End of over 8 (6 runs) Pakistan 61/0 (RR: 7.62)
Salman Butt    26* (18b 5x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-6-0
Kamran Akmal    32* (30b 4x4)      Naeem Islam    1-0-8-0

8.1

Naeem Islam to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, wonderful shot, this time from Kamran, who opened up the off side, and unleashed his wrists to send that to deep point boundary in a trice

8.2

Naeem Islam to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, down the track, and goes for an almighty hoick towards midwicket

8.3

Naeem Islam to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, stays back this time and goes high over the off side, between long off and cover for a couple

8.6

Naeem Islam to Kamran Akmal, no run, short and drifting on to leg, Kamran pulls hard but hits the ball a tad early, and finds wide mid on. He missed out on a freebie there

End of over 9 (10 runs) Pakistan 71/0 (RR: 7.88)
Kamran Akmal    41* (35b 5x4)      Naeem Islam    2-0-18-0
Salman Butt    27* (19b 5x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-6-0

9.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, FOUR, placed expertly by Butt! These are not easy boundaries to clear and placement is of utmost importance. Butt does that and swings well between midwicket and the square leg fielder, who converge but can't stop the boundary

9.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, 2 runs, through the off side this time, stays back and cuts behind square

9.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, no run

9.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, 1 run, sweeps it off leg stump, half-fielded by short fine leg, who parries it to the sweeper running in, and they pick a single

End of over 10 (9 runs) Pakistan 80/0 (RR: 8.00)
Salman Butt    35* (24b 6x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    2-0-15-0
Kamran Akmal    42* (36b 5x4)      Naeem Islam    2-0-18-0

10.1

Abdur Razzak to Salman Butt, SIX, that's the cleanest hit you will see today! Poor ball from Razzak, length ball on the leg stump, Salman picked it early went down on a knee and muscled it flat but well beyond the midwicket ropes!

10.2

Abdur Razzak to Salman Butt, 1 run, sweeps again, but only for a single.

10.3

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, cut away to the deep to turn the strike over to Butt

10.4

Abdur Razzak to Salman Butt, 1 run, another big hit towards midwicket, but because of the big field cannot find the boundary, and for the same reason does not hole out to the boundary rider either

10.5

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 2 runs, cut away nicely towards cover

10.6

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, stays back and punches it down to wide mid off for a single. Ominous signs for Bangladesh. Great going for Pakistan here.

End of over 11 (12 runs) Pakistan 92/0 (RR: 8.36)
Kamran Akmal    46* (39b 5x4)      Abdur Razzak    2-0-21-0

11.4

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Salman Butt, 1 run, and that's fifty for Butt. Drives down the ground and gets to the landmark ahead of his opening partner. Well played!

11.5

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Kamran Akmal, no run

11.6

Suhrawadi Shuvo to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, Kamran joins him there now, not to be outdone! Gets down the track and hits powerfully over the bowler's head, it goes really straight. Couple of bounces and over the ropes.

End of over 12 (12 runs) Pakistan 104/0 (RR: 8.66)
Kamran Akmal    51* (43b 6x4)      Suhrawadi Shuvo    1-0-12-0
Salman Butt    50* (29b 6x4 2x6)      Abdur Razzak    2-0-21-0

Fifties don't come in more contrasting style. Butt has been all finesse and elegance, and yet has managed to outpace the seemingly aggressive and agricultural Kamran. Curiously, both of them have run quite poorly, but they are still there, so far so good.

12.1

Mohammad Ashraful to Salman Butt, no run, full on off, driven back to the bowler

12.2

Mohammad Ashraful to Salman Butt, 1 run, jumps out this time and drives expansively towards deep extra cover

12.3

12.4

Mohammad Ashraful to Salman Butt, 1 run, clears his leg and lofts over mid off, on the bounce to long off

12.5

Mohammad Ashraful to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, frees his arms, opens the wrists and goes inside out over covers, timed extremely well and it landed just short of the rope

12.6

Mohammad Ashraful to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, shortens the length this time, Kamran stays back and muscles it towards deep cover

End of over 13 (8 runs) Pakistan 112/0 (RR: 8.61)
Kamran Akmal    57* (46b 7x4)      Mohammad Ashraful    1-0-8-0

13.1

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, full on middle and leg, Kamran pulls out a violent and gets it down to midwicket

13.2

Abdur Razzak to Salman Butt, FOUR, another top shot from Butt who is looking increasingly better! This was short and wide outside off, turning into him, but he did very well to open up the off side and go through the line, over cover and into the gap

13.3

Abdur Razzak to Salman Butt, 1 run, sweeps it away this time, straight to the deep square leg

13.4

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, down the track, looks to carve through the off side but only gets a single

13.5

Abdur Razzak to Salman Butt, 1 run, another sweep from Butt, down to midwicket

13.6

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, nice improvisation, and in the context average bowling. Kamran's initial movement was to get inside the line of the ball, and the bowler played into his hands by spraying it on leg stump. Kamran gladly hoicked it behind square leg for four.

End of over 14 (12 runs) Pakistan 124/0 (RR: 8.85)
Kamran Akmal    63* (49b 8x4)      Abdur Razzak    3-0-33-0
Salman Butt    58* (35b 7x4 2x6)      Mohammad Ashraful    1-0-8-0

14.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, 1 run, full on leg, Salman looks to come down and ends up yorking himself, but still has enough skill to wrist it down to square leg

14.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, SIX, super duper shot from Kamran Akmal! Short of a length outside off stump, he cleared his front foot out of the way and swung in awesome fashion, inside out over the cover boundary. Timing was of the essence in that shot!

14.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, another carve through the off side, not as good timing as last time, gets a single, square

14.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, 1 run, Butt tees off this time, short of a length, he clears the front foot and pulls well in front of square, straight to the fielder in the deep

14.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, Kamran insists on going through the off side, even this time, when he had moved well towards the leg side and the bowler followed him, cramping him completely for room. Still muscles it down to wide long off

14.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Salman Butt, FOUR, improvisation! Butt walks across his stumps and converts what would have been a yorker on leg stump, into a full toss down the leg, and easily flicks it away for four between square leg and fine leg.

End of over 15 (14 runs) Pakistan 138/0 (RR: 9.20)
Salman Butt    64* (38b 8x4 2x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    4-0-39-0
Kamran Akmal    71* (52b 8x4 1x6)      Abdur Razzak    3-0-33-0

15.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, clears the front foot and looks to go over long off, times it not so well, and it goes one bounce to the fielder at long off

15.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, 1 run, full toss on leg, somehow escapes punishment. Swept in the air, straight to deep square leg on the bounce

15.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, very full outside off, bunted off the back foot towards extra cover

15.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, 1 run, square driven by Butt, from full outside off stump, towards the sweeper

15.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, OUT, wicket against the run of play, finally Bangladesh have a wicket. Kamran did the basics right, came down the track and converted it into a full toss. He could have put it away anywhere, but he has had a preference for the carve over cover today. Goes for the same shot again, and mistimes it, it pops up for a straight forward chance at point. Good innings from Kamran, though not the most pleasing to the eye

Kamran Akmal c Abdur Razzak b Shakib Al Hasan 73 (55b 8x4 1x6) SR: 132.72

15.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, Boom Boom Afridi gets forward and begins with a slap down to deep midwicket for a single. He keeps strike, this could be fun!

End of over 16 (5 runs) Pakistan 143/1 (RR: 8.93)
Shahid Afridi    1* (1b)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-0-20-1
Salman Butt    66* (40b 8x4 2x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    4-0-39-0

16.1

Shafiul Islam to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, good yorker on middle and leg, Afridi digs it out for a single down to long on and gives Butt the strike. Disappointment.

16.2

Shafiul Islam to Salman Butt, 1 run, and Butt turns it right back to his captain. Full on his leg, he does well to drive it without much room to cover

16.3

Shafiul Islam to Shahid Afridi, no run, whoa, interesting all round! Afridi was ready for a scoop shot, the bowler saw his movement and banged it in real short making Afridi look a tad sheepish. Called one for the over

16.4

Shafiul Islam to Shahid Afridi, no run, big swing and a miss outside off, the fielder at point would have felt a stiff breeze. Swish!

16.5

Shafiul Islam to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, short this time, and Afridi looks to launch it straight, hits it straight up and it lands safe

16.6

Shafiul Islam to Shahid Afridi, 2 runs, again all muscle no timing, Afridi carves it high over the off side and just over the head of the cover fielder

End of over 17 (6 runs) Pakistan 149/1 (RR: 8.76)
Shahid Afridi    6* (6b)      Shafiul Islam    3-0-17-0
Salman Butt    67* (41b 8x4 2x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-0-20-1

17.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, 2 runs, full on middle and off, swept away powerfully to deep midwicket

17.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, full and outside off again, Afridi can only get a single off the front foot into the covers

17.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Salman Butt, 1 run, driven by Butt down the ground towards long on

17.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Shahid Afridi, OUT, and that's the end of Afridi. Harmless looping full toss on off stump, it was Afridi's ball to whack and he ended up getting a feeble outside edge that ballooned to short third man.

Shahid Afridi c Mahmudullah b Shakib Al Hasan 9 (9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

End of over 18 (7 runs) Pakistan 156/2 (RR: 8.66)
     Shakib Al Hasan    4-0-27-2
Salman Butt    71* (44b 8x4 2x6)      Shafiul Islam    3-0-17-0

The pitch is slowing up drastically, and even accomplished hitters are struggling to get it away. Razzaq walks in. Sheesh, what a line-up this!

18.1

Shafiul Islam to Salman Butt, 2 runs, nice improvisation again from Butt, moves outside off and swings the full toss down to square leg, where Imrul Kayes puts in a very good tumble to save the boundary

18.2

Shafiul Islam to Salman Butt, OUT, done in by his own cheek! Butt is roaming all over the crease looking to work it away using the bowler's pace. This time, he exposes his stumps and Shafiul finds a way past his defence to strike timber. End of a really good innings, he hardly struggled for timing on a difficult pitch

Salman Butt b Shafiul Islam 73 (46b 8x4 2x6) SR: 158.69

18.3

Shafiul Islam to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, bouncer first up to Misbah, who is hurried into his pull shot, but gets it down along the ground to midwicket

18.4

Shafiul Islam to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, thickish outside edge, but unfortunately for Razzaq, it goes straight to short third man

18.5

Shafiul Islam to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, Misbah walks across, looks to lap it away, makes reasonably good contact and then comically falls down at the crease, overbalancing. They still get a couple. What's with the ul-Haqs and clumsiness!

18.6

Shafiul Islam to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, slower ball, Misbah picks it, comes out his crease, waits and muscles it well wide of long on for two more.

End of over 19 (8 runs) Pakistan 164/3 (RR: 8.63)
Misbah-ul-Haq    5* (3b)      Shafiul Islam    4-0-25-1
Abdul Razzaq    1* (1b)      Shakib Al Hasan    4-0-27-2

Last over coming then. Pakistan have not blazed away in the end overs, but they have bustled along in pretty good fashion.

19.1

Abdur Razzak to Abdul Razzaq, no run, very wide outside off and lucky to get away with it

19.2

Abdur Razzak to Abdul Razzaq, 2 runs, looks to launch it over cover, but it a failed attempt. Balloons away for a couple

19.3

Abdur Razzak to Abdul Razzaq, 1 run, powerfully struck this time, wide of long off

19.4

Abdur Razzak to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, makes room and clears his foot away, muscles it hard down the ground but still can't find the boundary. The ropes are atleast 10 metres further behind here as compared to the IPL. I daresay, it is good for the game this way

19.5

Abdur Razzak to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, driven hard down the ground again, towards long on for a single

Abdur Razzak to Abdul Razzaq, 2 runs, the last ball typifies the innings. Another full toss, another charge down the track and an aggressive hit, and again not timed that well, but well enough for a scapered couple.

Right then, Pakistan have doen really well here on a pitch where clearly the ball is not coming on. Bangladesh pride themselves in the accuracy and persistence of their spinners, but today they did not come to the party, barring Shakib. The chase will not be easy, but Bangladesh will give it their best shot - they know but one way to bat, and this is the format where it works the best.

Lots of readers have written in asking about Pakistan's struggle towards the end of the innings. Given the conditions - the slow pitch and the long boundaries - they have done quite well. The scores in this tourney are going to be far lesser than normal Twenty20 fare, and Pakistan's effort today may well feature in the top scores. All credit to Butt and Akmal who set it up for them in contrasting, but effective fashion.

End of over 20 (8 runs) Pakistan 172/3

Misbah-ul-Haq    8* (5b)      Shafiul Islam    4-0-25-1
