ICC World Twenty20 - 12th match, Group C

Afghanistan v South Africa

South Africa won by 59 runs

Right, welcome back. We're ready for the resumption, the floodlights are glowing and Dale Steyn is armed and dangerous. Afghanistan have a chance, but they didn't like the pace against India. This will be a challenge ...

0.1

Steyn to Noor Ali Zadran, no run, Welcome to the big time! Full, fast, late outswing. Get a bat on that ...

0.2

Steyn to Noor Ali Zadran, no run, another ripper. Fast and zipping past the edge, and Noor barely left his stance before he was beaten

0.3

Steyn to Noor Ali Zadran, 1 wide, banged in short, too short in fact, and Afghanistan's challenge is up and running

0.3

Steyn to Noor Ali Zadran, OUT, too good from Steyn. Tight line outside off, found a thin edge, and Boucher pouched the chance

Noor Ali Zadran c †Boucher b Steyn 0 (2m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

An early blow, and how will Afghanistan respond?

0.4

Steyn to Mohammad Shahzad, 2 runs, full and bending sharply, but Shahzad meets that with a firm clip through midwicket. The first runs off the bat

0.5

Steyn to Mohammad Shahzad, no run, outside off, late swing, left alone

0.6

Steyn to Mohammad Shahzad, no run, massive appeal for caught-behind, and is that two in the over? No, it's not. Steyn is aghast but umpire Taufel is unmoved. I think there was bat on that ...

End of over 1 (3 runs) Afghanistan 3/1 (137 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 3.00, RRR: 7.21)
Mohammad Shahzad    2* (3b)      DW Steyn    1-0-3-1
Karim Sadiq    0* (0b)

1.1

Langeveldt to Karim Sadiq, no run, width outside off, no stroke offered there

1.2

Langeveldt to Karim Sadiq, no run, a wild swish, and Langeveldt's subtle swingers are too canny for that shot

1.3

Langeveldt to Karim Sadiq, 2 runs, short, and swatted over square leg, a touch fortuitous, but it lands safe

1.4

Langeveldt to Karim Sadiq, no run, beauty. Hits the seam and climbs past the edge from a good length

1.5

Langeveldt to Karim Sadiq, no run, no foot movement, merely an ambitious mow. No contact either

1.6

Langeveldt to Karim Sadiq, no run, cracked out to point, superb fielding from de Villiers, and a direct hit would have been out

End of over 2 (2 runs) Afghanistan 5/1 (135 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 2.50, RRR: 7.50)
Karim Sadiq    2* (6b)      CK Langeveldt    1-0-2-0
Mohammad Shahzad    2* (3b)      DW Steyn    1-0-3-1

2.1

Steyn to Mohammad Shahzad, no run, great bowling again, he gets that outswinger going at will. Left alone

2.2

Steyn to Mohammad Shahzad, no run, a wafty drive, no contact there as the ball ghosts away late

2.3

Steyn to Mohammad Shahzad, OUT, cherry-picking from Steyn. Tighter line, a touch less swing, but more bounce, and a simple snick through to the keeper

Mohammad Shahzad c †Boucher b Steyn 2 (4m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

This is such a step-up in class for Afghanistan. They have already done themselves proud with the ball, but you suspect this could get messy now

2.4

Steyn to Nawroz Mangal, 1 wide, too much pace and bounce for the umpire's liking. That was out of reach

2.4

Steyn to Nawroz Mangal, no run, drawn forward, and again the ball zips away late from a batsman with a rooted stance

2.5

Steyn to Nawroz Mangal, no run, pushed back onto the stumps, and beaten outside off

2.6

Steyn to Nawroz Mangal, 1 run, back into the crease and wafted down to third man

End of over 3 (2 runs) Afghanistan 7/2 (133 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 2.33, RRR: 7.82)
Nawroz Mangal    1* (3b)      DW Steyn    2-0-5-2
Karim Sadiq    2* (6b)      CK Langeveldt    1-0-2-0

Here's Morne Morkel

3.1

M Morkel to Nawroz Mangal, OUT, regulation dismissal. Tight line, unnerving bounce, a simple edge and Kallis at first slip swallows the catch. That was reminiscent of England at Johannesburg

Nawroz Mangal c Kallis b M Morkel 1 (1m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

3.2

M Morkel to Asghar Stanikzai, 1 run, clipped down to third man, and the batsman runs straight into Morkel in his followthrough! He eventually gets to the far end to get off the mark

3.3

M Morkel to Karim Sadiq, no run, pushed back into the crease and defended

3.4

M Morkel to Karim Sadiq, OUT, short and nasty, Sadiq was backing away but the ball kept coming, and de Villiers at point pocketed a looping gloved catch

Karim Sadiq c de Villiers b M Morkel 2 (17m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 25.00

It's all a bit undignified, but it bears repetition, this is a pace attack of a standard that Afghanistan have never ever encountered before in their lives

3.5

M Morkel to Raees Ahmadzai, FOUR, that's runs! A slash outside off stump, and away it flies through third man

3.6

M Morkel to Raees Ahmadzai, OUT, another one bites the dust! Short again, an aggressive mow, a steepling top-edge, and a running catch for Boucher behind the stumps

Raees Ahmadzai c †Boucher b M Morkel 4 (1m 2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

End of over 4 (5 runs) Afghanistan 12/5 (128 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 3.00, RRR: 8.00)
     M Morkel    1-0-5-3
Asghar Stanikzai    1* (1b)      DW Steyn    2-0-5-2

4.1

Steyn to Mohammad Nabi, no run, how did that miss! A low full-toss, late outswing, and that scuttled past the off stump by millimetres

4.2

Steyn to Mohammad Nabi, no run, outside off again, and rapidly through to the keeper

4.3

Steyn to Mohammad Nabi, 1 wide, down the leg-side, and Afghanistan might not appreciate that. It means another delivery from Steyn

4.3

Steyn to Mohammad Nabi, no run, full and straight, and watchfully blocked. Arguably the first one to hit the middle of the bat all innings

4.4

Steyn to Mohammad Nabi, 1 leg bye, down the leg-side, flicks the pad

4.5

Steyn to Asghar Stanikzai, no run, beaten once again by Steyn's late swing

4.6

Steyn to Asghar Stanikzai, no run, full but a touch wide, driven handsomely but only as far as short cover

End of over 5 (2 runs) Afghanistan 14/5 (126 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 2.80, RRR: 8.40)
Asghar Stanikzai    1* (3b)      DW Steyn    3-0-6-2
Mohammad Nabi    0* (4b)      M Morkel    1-0-5-3

5.1

M Morkel to Mohammad Nabi, OUT, that's just brutal. Short again, bangs the splice, loops coolly into the slip cordon, and another mugging of a dismissal

Mohammad Nabi c Duminy b M Morkel 0 (6m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

This is a sad way for an incredible journey to come to an end. But in some ways it emphasises how far they've come

5.2

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, 1 run, outside off, nudged down to third man

5.3

M Morkel to Asghar Stanikzai, 1 run, worked down to third man again

5.4

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, no run, fizzing through all the defences, as Shenwari backs away towards the square leg umpire

5.5

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, 1 no ball, Morkel oversteps, and here comes a Free hit

5.5

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, SIX, that's the way to do it! Short and swiped hard and handsomely over long-on for six, and that's the most celebrated shot of the night!

5.6

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, no run, outside off, short in length again, and another over ticks by

End of over 6 (9 runs) Afghanistan 23/6 (117 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 3.83, RRR: 8.35)
Samiullah Shenwari    7* (5b 1x6)      M Morkel    2-0-14-4
Asghar Stanikzai    2* (4b)      DW Steyn    3-0-6-2

6.1

Langeveldt to Asghar Stanikzai, 1 run, edged, but safe, past the slips and picked up by third man

6.2

Langeveldt to Samiullah Shenwari, no run, outside off, good lift from a good length, and through to the keeper

6.3

Langeveldt to Samiullah Shenwari, no run, a wild and woolly swipe, and why not? No contact this time

6.4

Langeveldt to Samiullah Shenwari, 1 run, on the hip and paddled away firmly, well fielded with a slide on the boundary's edge

6.5

Langeveldt to Asghar Stanikzai, OUT, another short ball, a half-formed pull shot, and that's simply snaffled at midwicket. Another step closer to the end of the road

Asghar Stanikzai c Steyn b Langeveldt 3 (16m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

This is starting to remind me of the closing scenes of "Cool Runnings". Doubtless it will make just as poignant a scene in the film of Afghanistan's exploits ...

6.6

Langeveldt to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 run, on the pads, clipped fine

End of over 7 (3 runs) Afghanistan 26/7 (114 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 3.71, RRR: 8.76)
Mirwais Ashraf    1* (1b)      CK Langeveldt    2-0-5-1
Samiullah Shenwari    8* (8b 1x6)      M Morkel    2-0-14-4

7.1

M Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 wide, down the leg side, and that's another run to the total

Incredibly Morkel's only bowled two overs. Afghanistan must feel he's been pursuing them for weeks

7.1

M Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 run, clipped fine to escape the strike

7.2

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, 1 no ball, that is seriously rapid, but he's overstepped. Another delivery added to the over

7.2

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, no run, that was a free hit but no contact

7.3

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, 2 runs, on the pads, tucked to midwicket, and they run an overthrow as the shy hits the stumps. Umpire Taufel checks for the run-out but he's safely home

7.4

M Morkel to Samiullah Shenwari, 1 run, angling down the leg-side, deflected square

7.5

M Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, OUT, a dab to gully and an instant call, but you can't take on AB de Villiers in that position. An instant gather, an under-arm shy, and there's no need to see that one again

Samiullah Shenwari run out 11 (10m 12b 0x4 1x6) SR: 91.66

The final curtain draws ever nearer

7.6

M Morkel to Hamid Hassan, no run, defended, but exceptionally uncomfortably. Another over ticks by

End of over 8 (6 runs) Afghanistan 32/8 (108 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 9.00)
Hamid Hassan    0* (1b)      M Morkel    3-0-20-4
Mirwais Ashraf    2* (3b)      CK Langeveldt    2-0-5-1

Time for some spin, this might be more to Afghanistan's liking

8.1

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, floated onto a good length, poked to gully

8.2

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, drawn forward and defended

8.3

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, good delivery, tweaking late to beat a limp push

8.6

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 wide, down the leg-side to spoil the over a touch

8.6

End of over 9 (1 run) Afghanistan 33/8 (107 runs required from 11 overs, RR: 3.66, RRR: 9.72)
Mirwais Ashraf    2* (9b)      RE van der Merwe    1-0-1-0

Here's Albie Morkel

9.1

9.5

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, raps the gloves with a sharp lifter. Good bowling

9.6

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 run, worked to midwicket with a gentle turn of the wrists. The absence of extreme pace has been rather cheering for Afghanistan

End of over 10 (8 runs) Afghanistan 41/8 (99 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 4.10, RRR: 9.90)
Mirwais Ashraf    3* (11b)      JA Morkel    1-0-8-0

11.1

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, punched off the back foot but straight to point

11.2

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, FOUR, that's beautifully struck, just a touch short, and the absence of pace and extreme lift means there's no danger in hoisting that through mid-on

11.3

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 run, cracked out to the deep once again. Morkel intercepts at deep midwicket

11.4

JA Morkel to Hamid Hassan, 1 run, battered down to mid-on to bring up the fifty, and it's been a spirited recovery against the slower bowlers

11.5

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, bouncer, no contact in the attempted pull

11.6

JA Morkel to Mirwais Ashraf, SIX, That. Is. Absolutely. Vast! The biggest hit of the night, a half-step down the track, a murderous swing of the blade, and that has cleared the stands and landed somewhere in the next parish!

End of over 12 (12 runs) Afghanistan 56/8 (84 runs required from 48 balls, RR: 4.66, RRR: 10.50)
Mirwais Ashraf    16* (19b 1x4 1x6)      JA Morkel    2-0-20-0

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, SIX, in the slot again, and another mighty blow. This is great to see, there's no meek surrender from these guys!

12.5

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, no run, beaten this time, a quicker ball outside off

12.6

van der Merwe to Mirwais Ashraf, 1 run, bashed out to deep cover, and the resistance continues

13.1

Langeveldt to Mirwais Ashraf, OUT, good delivery, tight on off stump, swinging in late to beat the inside-edge, and Ashraf's spirited cameo comes to an end

Mirwais Ashraf b Langeveldt 23 (22m 25b 1x4 2x6) SR: 92.00

So, one wicket remaining, can they nudge their score above the lowest of the tournament to date, 68?

13.3

Langeveldt to Shapoor Zadran, 1 wide, left alone as Shapoor watches the swing carefully

15.2

Langeveldt to Hamid Hassan, no run, full length, looking for the baseball swipe, but gave himself too much room

15.3

15.4

Langeveldt to Hamid Hassan, no run, making room again, and can't make contact

15.5

Langeveldt to Hamid Hassan, FOUR, bouncer, and Hamid didn't know much about that pull shot, only that it somehow made it to the fine leg boundary

I'm looking forward to his blog tomorrow. Read it here

15.6

Langeveldt to Hamid Hassan, OUT, and that, alas, is the end of that. Another short ball, another mow, and another top-edge for Kallis to snaffle as he back-pedalled to collect the catch at slip

So, Afghanistan head for home, South Africa get ready to take on New Zealand in their first match of the Super Eights tomorrow. That's all from us tonight, join us again then for more fun and frolics.

"We played really well and we have learned a lot of things from South Africa," says Afghanistan's captain, Nawroz Mangal. "We were in a really tough group but we want to play these teams again and again."

"We can still be more convincing that we were today, but it was a good work-out for us," says Graeme Smith, who enjoyed the pace and bounce in the wicket. "I think if we can carry on a good upward curve, and click, we can become a real force in this tournament."

Unsurprisingly, the man of the match is Morne Morkel, for his mugging of the Afghan top-order. "With a new hard ball, it went through quite nicely," he says. "You still need to hit the right areas, but tomorrow's a new thing."

So, Afghanistan's journey comes to an end, but what an adventure it's been. From the World Cricket League Division Five to the World Twenty20 in a matter of months, and while they were outclassed in the final analysis today, they were far from overawed.

Brydon Coverdale has the story covered in his bulletin, while Gnasher McGlashan is freshly arrived in Barbados from Guyana to bring us all the reaction from the ground. Hold tight for the presentations ...
