ICC World Twenty20 - 24th match, Group F

West Indies v Australia

Australia won by 6 wickets (with 22 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to the last match of the Super Eights. It's West Indies and Australia in St Lucia, and the news from the middle is West Indies have won the toss and elected to bat.

Following Sri Lanka's win over India, the scenario is this: West Indies need to win by 24 runs to overtake Sri Lanka and qualify for the semi-finals. Theoretically, Australia can be knocked out - but only if they lose by 151 runs!

Australia are taking in an unchanged side, while West Indies have brought in Narsingh Deonarine and Nikita Miller to replace Wavell Hinds and Kemar Roach. No Roach - very interesting.

Now then, while you're getting ready for this game, remember that live audio is available for every match of the ICC World T20 on Cricket Radio. We're sorry but due to rights restrictions this service is not available to readers in India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are walking out to bat now. We're ready for the start. This is must-win stuff for the home team - how will Gayle lead the team? Let's find out. Dirk Nannes to open up for Australia.

0.1

Nannes to Gayle, 1 wide, full, swinging and wide of off stump, too wide, says the umpire

0.1

Nannes to Gayle, FOUR, strong start from Gayle, he gets a half-volley and sends a punchy drive back past the bowler for four

0.2

Nannes to Gayle, OUT, oh dear! He's gone! Angled in and this ball doesn't swing at all, and rattles Gayle's stumps. The ball jagged back a little off the seam, Gayle has played the wrong line.

CH Gayle b Nannes 4 (1m 2b 1x4 0x6) SR: 200.00

Chris Gayle's wicket doesn't mean game over, but it does hurt West Indies' chances of posting a very large total

0.3

Nannes to Sarwan, 1 run, clipped away for a single

0.4

Nannes to Chanderpaul, FOUR, a touch too full there as Nannes looked for the yorker, Chanderpaul got to it on the full and clipped from just outside off through midwicket, well placed for a boundary

0.5

Nannes to Chanderpaul, 1 run, short and fast, Chanderpaul pulls a single forward of square leg

0.6

Nannes to Sarwan, 1 run, turned off his pads for a single to fine leg

Well, that was an eventful first over - plenty of runs but more importantly, the wicket of Gayle

End of over 1 (12 runs) West Indies 12/1 (RR: 12.00)
RR Sarwan    2* (2b)      DP Nannes    1-0-12-1

1.1

Tait to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan can't get this one away

1.2

Tait to Sarwan, 1 leg bye, swings in to the legs, it bobs up off the pad and they get through for a leg bye

1.3

Tait to Chanderpaul, FOUR, lovely stroke from Chanderpaul, he uses Tait's pace and a little width outside off to help the ball on its way with a back-foot drive through point for four

1.4

Tait to Chanderpaul, no run, bouncer to reply! Chanderpaul gets out of the way of that one

1.5

Tait to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, clipped off the pads through square leg

1.6

Tait to Chanderpaul, 1 run, short of a length, Chanderpaul angles the bat and guides this one to third man

End of over 2 (8 runs) West Indies 20/1 (RR: 10.00)

2.1

Nannes to Chanderpaul, no run, nudged to midwicket, can't beat the field

"Gayle really can't handle lefty quickies, Vaas, Bolinger and now this," notes Errol Erskine.

2.2

Nannes to Chanderpaul, 2 runs, fuller, straighter, and Chanderpaul flicks the ball to fine leg

2.3

Nannes to Chanderpaul, no run, pushed away to mid-on and they consider a quick single, but Johnson's quick pickup and throw sends them back

2.4

Nannes to Chanderpaul, no run, nudged to cover, they can't find a run

2.5

Nannes to Chanderpaul, 1 run, yorker length outside off, driven wide of mid off, where Clarke dives across to make the stop

2.6

Nannes to Sarwan, 1 run, Sarwan backs off slightly and works it to cover

End of over 3 (4 runs) West Indies 24/1 (RR: 8.00)

A change of pace, quite literally, with Watson to replace Tait

3.1

Watson to Sarwan, no run, clipped away forward of square for a run

3.2

Watson to Sarwan, FOUR, nicely played, too short from Watson and Sarwan crunches a pull through midwicket

3.3

Watson to Sarwan, no run, Sarwan flashes outside off, can't make contact

3.4

Watson to Sarwan, 1 run, guided away behind the wicket for a run

3.5

Watson to Chanderpaul, 1 run, Chanderpaul walks across his stumps and tries to flick over fine leg, who has come up, but doesn't connect. Watson asks the question for lbw but it's denied by Rudi Koertzen, who called runs

3.6

Watson to Sarwan, no run, pushed to mid-on, can't beat the field

End of over 4 (6 runs) West Indies 30/1 (RR: 7.50)
RR Sarwan    8* (10b 1x4)      SR Watson    1-0-6-0
S Chanderpaul    16* (12b 2x4)      DP Nannes    2-0-16-1

Johnson into the attack now

4.1

Johnson to Chanderpaul, no run, short and wide of off, worked to point

4.2

Johnson to Chanderpaul, 1 wide, bouncer this time, Chanderpaul gets under it and it's called a wide

4.2

Johnson to Chanderpaul, FOUR, flicked behind square leg, well played by Chanderpaul as he finds the boundary again

4.3

Johnson to Chanderpaul, no run, nudged to point, they think about a quick single but can't get it

4.4

Johnson to Chanderpaul, no run, short of a length, Chanderpaul drives to cover

4.5

Johnson to Chanderpaul, FOUR, oh, that's wonderful innovation, Johnson bowls a good line outside off and Chanderpaul walks all the way across and flicks it over short fine leg

4.6

Johnson to Chanderpaul, OUT, the end of Chanderpaul! He's gone for the aerial drive over the bowler's head, doesn't quite time it and the ball gets a lot of air, David Hussey runs back from mid-on and takes a really well judged catch running with the flight

S Chanderpaul c DJ Hussey b Johnson 24 (24m 18b 4x4 0x6) SR: 133.33

End of over 5 (9 runs) West Indies 39/2 (RR: 7.80)
     MG Johnson    1-0-9-1
RR Sarwan    8* (10b 1x4)      SR Watson    1-0-6-0

5.1

Tait to Bravo, no run, big appeal from Tait, he's got some nice inswing to Bravo there and wanted the lbw, Koertzen says it's slipping down leg

5.2

Tait to Bravo, no run, swinging in again, Bravo pushes to mid on

5.3

Tait to Bravo, no run, short of a length now, Bravo hops up on his toes to defend to midwicket

5.4

Tait to Bravo, no run, again Bravo is watchful, defending to leg

5.5

Tait to Bravo, 1 run, really good yorker, on line and swinging in, but it's well kept out by Bravo, who finds a run to mid on

5.6

Tait to Sarwan, no run, almost through him, swinging in towards off stump and Sarwan gets a thick inside edge back onto his pads

That's a very good, economical over from Tait

End of over 6 (1 run) West Indies 40/2 (RR: 6.66)
RR Sarwan    8* (11b 1x4)      SW Tait    2-0-8-0
DJ Bravo    1* (5b)      MG Johnson    1-0-9-1

Time for some spin with Steven Smith

6.1

Smith to Bravo, 1 run, clipped away off his pads to square leg

6.2

Smith to Sarwan, no run, oh, what's happened here? The ball turns past the bat, Sarwan appears to be well in his ground but Haddin whips off the bails and is confident. The third umpire is called for and indeed Sarwan is moving his back foot, well inside the crease, but it's impossible to tell if his foot is just raised or not. His spikes look like they're grounded, so he's safe.

6.3

Smith to Sarwan, 1 run, some turn again from Smith, Sarwan backs away and punches through cover

6.4

Smith to Bravo, 2 runs, on the back foot and driven through point, Mike Hussey on the boundary makes a sliding save

6.5

Smith to Bravo, 1 run, pushed away for a single to the off side

6.6

Smith to Sarwan, 1 run, goes over the top of cover, one bounce to the man in the deep

End of over 7 (6 runs) West Indies 46/2 (RR: 6.57)
RR Sarwan    10* (14b 1x4)      SPD Smith    1-0-6-0
DJ Bravo    5* (8b)      SW Tait    2-0-8-0

7.1

Johnson to Sarwan, FOUR, Sarwan gets this one fine, and fine enough to reach the boundary. Johnson was aiming at leg stump and the batsman got a tickle on it to beat fine leg

7.2

Johnson to Sarwan, 1 leg bye, pushes a single to the off side

7.3

Johnson to Bravo, 1 run, well, quite an expansive pull from Bravo there, he's really got under it and maybe even off the toe of the bat, it's bounced to the man at deep midwicket

7.4

Johnson to Sarwan, no run, slower ball outside off, beats the bat

7.5

Johnson to Sarwan, OUT, oh, that's extremely unfortunate. What a shocking piece of luck for Dwayne Bravo. Sarwan drives fast and straight - too straight - as the ball clips Johnson's fingers and rockets into the stumps at the non-striker's end with Bravo backing up out of his ground

DJ Bravo run out 6 (10m 9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

There was a really big deflection off Johnson's fingers, no doubt about that one, and Bravo was backing up a long, long way

7.6

Johnson to Sarwan, 1 run, on the pads, Sarwan turns the ball behind square

End of over 8 (7 runs) West Indies 53/3 (RR: 6.62)
RR Sarwan    15* (19b 2x4)      MG Johnson    2-0-15-1
N Deonarine    0* (0b)      SPD Smith    1-0-6-0

8.1

Smith to Sarwan, 2 runs, a bit too short, it's cut off the back foot through point

8.2

Smith to Sarwan, 1 run, tossed up and nudged to leg, where there's a big gap, the bowler Smith has to hare off and chase. He ends up at midwicket but is quick enough to keep it to a single

8.3

Smith to Deonarine, no run, pushed to the off side

8.4

Smith to Deonarine, OUT, Deonarine's inclusion hasn't helped West Indies, he's gone for the glory shot over deep midwicket but straight to the man on the boundary

N Deonarine c MEK Hussey b Smith 0 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

West Indies are in trouble here, bearing in mind that to progress to the semi-finals they need not only win, but by 24 runs

8.5

Smith to Ramdin, 1 run, pulled through midwicket

8.6

Smith to Sarwan, 1 run, clipped through midwicket again, there's a big gap there with the men back on the boundary

End of over 9 (5 runs) West Indies 58/4 (RR: 6.44)
RR Sarwan    19* (22b 2x4)      SPD Smith    2-0-11-1

9.1

Johnson to Sarwan, no run, driven to extra cover, can't beat the field

9.2

Johnson to Sarwan, 1 run, driven again, this time to long-off

9.3

Johnson to Ramdin, 1 wide, wrong line from Johnson this time, down leg and called wide

9.3

Johnson to Ramdin, OUT, gone, straightforward dismissal with a ball angled across Ramdin, who looks to dab the ball away and simply gets a thick edge behind

D Ramdin c †Haddin b Johnson 1 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

A tame way for Ramdin to go, and this batting effort could finish with a whimper if West Indies aren't careful. Here comes Kieron Pollard, who could turn things around, but goodness knows why he's batting as low as No. 7.

9.4

Johnson to Pollard, no run, turned off the pads to backward square

9.5

Johnson to Pollard, no run, left alone outside off stump

9.6

Johnson to Pollard, 1 run, pushed to cover for a quick single

10.2

Smith to Pollard, 1 run, shorter ball, crunched to cover and they get a quick single, beating the throw to the bowler's end

10.3

Smith to Sarwan, 1 run, driven down the ground to long-off

10.4

Smith to Pollard, FOUR, a nice, flat drive in the air wide of mid-off, very well played by Pollard

10.5

Smith to Pollard, no run, turns past the outside edge

10.6

Smith to Pollard, no run, some spin once again, Pollard defends

Michael Clarke brings himself on now

11.1

Clarke to Sarwan, 1 run, pushes a single to the off side

11.2

Clarke to Pollard, 1 run, a bit short, driven to long-on off the back foot

11.3

Clarke to Sarwan, 1 run, clipped away through leg

11.4

Clarke to Pollard, no run, tries to close the face on this one, leading edge heads out to the off side

11.5

Clarke to Pollard, no run, defending once again, Pollard is content to be careful for now

11.6

Clarke to Pollard, SIX, and this time Pollard goes for it, he's got down on one knee to slog sweep, he had no intention of keeping that ball down and lifted it high over midwicket for six

End of over 12 (9 runs) West Indies 76/5 (RR: 6.33)
KA Pollard    13* (12b 1x4 1x6)      MJ Clarke    1-0-9-0

12.2

Smith to Pollard, no run, turns outside off, Pollard cuts but can't beat the field

12.3

Smith to Pollard, OUT, gone! Lovely piece of bowling from Smith, he's turned the ball just past the bat of Pollard, who is trying to get forward and work through leg, and Haddin whips the bails off, no need for the third umpire there

KA Pollard st †Haddin b Smith 13 (7m 14b 1x4 1x6) SR: 92.85

So, it's another disappointing innings from Kieron Pollard. He's such a good player, but hasn't shown in in T20 internationals.

12.4

Smith to Sammy, OUT, first ball! Smith is on a hat-trick! Tossed up on leg and turning back to off, Sammy has gone for the drive but straight back to the bowler, who takes a good catch

DJG Sammy c & b Smith 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

12.6

15.4

Johnson to Miller, 1 run, dropped. Another drive in the air, Clarke at cover dives to his left and misses the chance with his left hand, not an easy catch but Clarke would take those more often than he'd spill them

15.5

Johnson to Benn, (no ball) 1 run, full toss, might have slipped out of the fingers there as it's ballooned up above waist height on the hips, worked to fine leg and called a no-ball

15.5

Johnson to Miller, 1 run, turned to leg for another single

15.6

Johnson to Benn, no run, thick inside edge could easily have crashed into the stumps, but Benn gets away with it

So, West Indies have failed to bat out their overs and have crawled to 105. They need a miracle, now, to get through to the semi-finals. Steven Smith and Mitchell Johnson bowled really well, and of course Dirk Nannes got the all-important wicket of Chris Gayle in the first over.
