Claude Henderson, a left-arm spinner who turned 40 in 2012, has been a consistent performer in county cricket over nine seasons with Leicestershire, whom he joined in 2004 as the first cricketer in the Championship to benefit from the Kolpak ruling, which allows players without a British passport to circumvent the normal restrictions on overseas players.
At the start of the 2013 season he had taken 337 first-class wickets for Leicestershire at 21.38, enjoying his most productive season in 2010, when he finished with 56 wickets at 20.68.
His skill with the ball was also a key factor in Leicestershire's three English Twenty20 Cup triumphs. His four-over spell against Somerset in the 2011 final came at a cost of just 11 runs and his participation in the 2011 Champions League followed an appearance in the inaugural competition in 2009 with Cape Cobras.
Henderson won seven Test caps and made four ODI appearances before leaving his native South Africa, having had to wait a long time for recognition as the South African spinning duties passed from Pat Symcox to Paul Adams and on to Nicky Boje. Surgery to Boje at the start of the 2001-02 summer opened the way for Henderson to make his Test debut against Zimbabwe at 29, and he was a late replacement for South Africa's tour of Australia when Boje failed to regain his fitness.
A prison warder before he turned to cricket full time, Henderson has spent many South African winters honing his craft in the English leagues and decided to seek his summer living there after it was clear he wouldn't have a major international future.
