ICC World Twenty20, 10th Match, Group D: New Zealand v South Africa at Lord's, Jun 9, 2009
ICC World Twenty20 - 10th match, Group D
South Africa won by 1 run
Played at Lord's, London (neutral venue)
9 June 2009 - day/night match (20-over match)

17.30 Time to start. The little kids in white have exited the field and the umpires, Harper and Rauf, are at their marks. The New Zealanders are in the field. Out come the South African openers. Still Smith and Kallis. Mills will open the attack. Sit back and enjoy this game.

17.25 The two teams are lined up and standing silently as their respective anthems play. Touching. Meanwhile, George Binoy decides against spitting on London public-transport staffers, and watches Dhoni check out some new bats.

17.10 No Vettori. Brendon McCullum has won the toss and decided to give his bowlers a crack at South Africa. James Franklin and Jesse Ryder are out with injuries and so is Ian O'Brein, so in come Kyle Mills, Brendon Diamanti, and Neil Broom. Its a Twenty20 debut for Diamanti. South Africa are unchanged.

17.00 Its overcast, though rain stayed away from the earlier game at Lord's. We saw the track during that game hold up in the first innings and then work for Pakistan's crafty spinners. That will excite Johan Botha and Roelof van der Merwe, and Daniel Vettori, if he's fit today.

16.55 Hi everyone, welcome to an inconsequential game. Why? Because New Zealand and South Africa have qualified for the Super Eights. We're a few minutes from the toss at Lord's, where Pakistan have knocked over Netherlands to seal their progression into the next round.

There are no points being carried through from the group stage. New Zealand's bowlers will use the contest to fine-tune following their heavy punishment in the opening game while the batsmen on both sides will attempt to maintain their gargantuan hitting.

South Africa's display was superior and was probably the most impressive of the tournament so far, but they know they will have to repeat it against major sides if they are to end their drought at global events.

0.1

Mills to Kallis, no run, starts out full outside off stump and the ball swings through the air, a good sign, and Kallis gets forward and leaves the ball be for the wicketkeeper

0.2

Mills to Kallis, no run, and again a little bit of movement for Mills, pitches it up, and once more Kallis strides forward and shoulders arms ... its like day one of a Test in Napier

0.3

Mills to Kallis, 2 runs, now Kallis decides to use the thing in his hands and flashes at another full and swinging delivery and gets two down to Butler at third man, who fumbles and allows a second

0.4

Mills to Kallis, 1 run, better length, just holding it back, Kallis steers to backward point

0.5

Mills to Smith, no run, good stuff, hits a good length and shapes away from Smith, who feels for it and gets beaten by the good carry through to McGlashan ... Peter, that is, not our Andrew

0.6

Mills to Smith, 1 run, too full and Smith leans into a square-drive, but Guptill throws himself around at point and takes some pace off the ball, thats good work by the fielder

Plenty of encouragement for the seamers. We've seen swing through the air and off the pitch.

End of over 1 (4 runs) South Africa 4/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • GC Smith 1 (2b)
    • JH Kallis 3 (4b)
    • KD Mills 1-0-4-0

Big Jacob Oram has the ball now. Not done much of note for a while. Will it be his day?

1.1

Oram to Smith, no run, starts off well, right up there on off stump to get Smith defending staunchly

1.2

Oram to Smith, 1 run, walks across his stumps to try and do something different, but the ball is too full and he ends up turning it toward the midwicket region

1.3

Oram to Kallis, FOUR, thats down the pads, right where Kallis likes them, and with no fielder at square leg he clips it off the pads for four, good shot

1.4

Oram to Kallis, no run, better ball, hits a good length and shaping in from outside off stump so Kallis gets forward and defends to the off side

1.5

Oram to Kallis, 1 run, straighter ball, turned well toward the man at midwicket

1.6

Oram to Smith, no run, good ball, pitches on a length and swings away, Smith tentatively pushes down the wrong line and gets beaten

Slow start. New Zealand haven't offered much room, crucially.

    • GC Smith 2 (5b)
    • JH Kallis 8 (7b 1x4)
    • JDP Oram 1-0-6-0
    • KD Mills 1-0-4-0
2.1

Mills to Kallis, no run, pitches middle and leg, swings in, Kallis flicks to midwicket

2.2

Mills to Kallis, no run, makes some room to try and thrash the ball over point but Mills drops it short and wide and Kallis ends up flaying the bat at ball and connecting with nothing but air

2.3

Mills to Kallis, FOUR, fluent drive that, it was a half-volley, granted, but needed to be put away and Kallis played a thumping shot past extra cover for four, balance correct and all that jazz

2.4

Mills to Kallis, 1 run, back of a length outside off stump, Kallis sees the ball swing and then plays it late, running it down the ground to backward point, thats smart batting

2.5

Mills to Smith, 1 run, pitches outside leg stump and Smith works it past square leg

2.6

Mills to Kallis, SIX, miscued but still goes the distance! Kallis backs away and uses his feet to get some momentum going and connects well enough to thrash that over cover-point and thoughts it not timed perfectly he gets enough on it to dump it just over the ropes

End of over 3 (12 runs) South Africa 22/0 (RR: 7.33)

    • JH Kallis 19 (12b 2x4 1x6)
    • GC Smith 3 (6b)

3.1

Oram to Smith, 1 run, change of pace, hits a good length, Smith runs it wide of point

3.2

Oram to Kallis, 1 run, speared into the pads, he clears the front leg and clips it for one

3.3

Oram to Smith, no run, well fielded, Taylor! Smith makes room and throws the bat at a wide one, absolutely nailing a square drive, but Taylor intercepts superbly at cover

3.4

Oram to Smith, 1 run, short of a length on leg stump, slower ball, Smith turns it away

3.5

Oram to Kallis, 1 run, pitched up on off stump and Kallis punched a drive in the air over Oram's hands, the ball drops safely in the deep and McCullum from mid-off collects and releases immeditately, had he hit Kallis would have been sweating

3.6

Oram to Smith, 1 wide, down the leg side, Smith uses his feet to try and flick but misses

3.6

Oram to Smith, 1 run, drags it short and in a jiffy Smith short-arm-jabs the ball past midwicket but there's cover in the deep in the form of a sweeper so he gets just a single

Bit of urgency being shown now. There's some juice in this track though.

End of over 4 (6 runs) South Africa 28/0 (RR: 7.00)

    • GC Smith 6 (10b)
    • JH Kallis 21 (14b 2x4 1x6)
    • JDP Oram 2-0-12-0
    • KD Mills 2-0-16-0

Its Ian Butler. Not much pace but he's canny in this format. Subtle changes of pace.

4.1

Butler to Smith, FOUR, offers some room outside off stump, allowing Smith free the arms and slice that over backward point, third man hustles but cannot cut it off

4.2

Butler to Smith, no run, still a tad wide and Smith, without much footwork, chases it in the air toward backward point where the ball drops just short of Nathan McCullum

4.3

Butler to Smith, 1 run, straighter ball and he works it across the stumps for a single

4.4

Butler to Kallis, no run, sharp movement back in, cuts back off a length and Kallis is cramped as he tries to run it down to third man, ends up taking it on the arm

4.5

Butler to Kallis, 1 leg bye, full down leg stump, Kallis cannot connect but gets a leg bye

Kallis is hobbling. The ball clipped the inside of his ankle as he tried to flick. The physio runs out with his box of magical goodies. Kallis gets some attention. Should be good to go. Magic spray works wonders.

4.6

Butler to Smith, 1 run, pitches it up outside off stump, Smith reaches out and drags the ball down just wide of mid-on for a single

End of over 5 (7 runs) South Africa 35/0 (RR: 7.00)

    • GC Smith 12 (14b 1x4)
    • JH Kallis 21 (16b 2x4 1x6)
    • IG Butler 1-0-6-0

Another change. Its Diamanti, on debut. Right-arm medium-fast. From around the stumps.

5.1

Diamanti to Smith, 1 run, hits a wide length first up and Smith dabs, getting third man into play

Another man down, this time its a Kiwi. Mills tried to stop the ball from the gully region but the ball found its way onto the family jewels, so Mills looks winded. Those hurt. He's down. Now he's up. Good man.

5.2

Diamanti to Kallis, 1 run, hits a length from back over the stumps, Kallis flicks it for one

5.3

Diamanti to Smith, FOUR, goes back around when Smith is on strike and bowls a terrible ball, short and wide, so Smith reaches out and slaps the long hop past the fielders for four

5.4

Diamanti to Smith, 1 run, searches for the yorker, doesn't quite nail it, and Smith makes room only to get an inside edge to the on side as he heaves at the straight delivery

5.5

Diamanti to Kallis, 1 run, pitches on a good length, Kallis square-drives it past point for one

5.6

Diamanti to Smith, FOUR, wrong line, Diamanti continues to struggle, this one's in the slot and angling into leg stump so all Smith has to do is clear the front leg and go over mid-on for four

Expensive first over for Diamanti. South Africa are doing well here.

End of over 6 (12 runs) South Africa 47/0 (RR: 7.83)

    • GC Smith 22 (18b 3x4)

6.1

NL McCullum to Kallis, no run, good start, flat outside off, no turn but it beats the bat

6.2

NL McCullum to Kallis, no run, slides down Kallis' pads and raps them as he's late on the flick

NL McCullum to Kallis, no run, good fielding off his own bowling, first he tosses it up on middle and leg, Kallis drives down the ground but in a flash McCullum dives across and saves runs

6.4

NL McCullum to Kallis, 1 run, thats too full and Kallis clips it past mid-on for a single

6.5

NL McCullum to Smith, 1 run, slows it up, tosses it just outside off, Smith whips it past midwicket

6.6

NL McCullum to Kallis, no run, starts to advance, McCullum fires it straighter and gets some turn away from Kallis, who ends up pushing it back to the bowler's left side

Good first over from McCullum.

End of over 7 (2 runs) South Africa 49/0 (RR: 7.00)

    • JH Kallis 24 (23b 2x4 1x6)
    • GC Smith 23 (19b 3x4)
    • NL McCullum 1-0-2-0

7.1

Butler to Smith, OUT, smart fielding at short midwicket! Butler drops it short of a length, it sits up and Smith short-arm-jabs it to the on side where Brendon McCullum intercepts and immediately releases and under-arm fling to the other end as Kallis is out of his crease, he has to turn back and stretch the bat out but McCullum finds his mark and Kallis is out by an inch. Very quick work from McCullum

JH Kallis run out 24 (36m 23b 2x4 1x6) SR: 104.34

In walks Gibbs at No. 3

7.2

Butler to Smith, no run, back of a length on the stumps and Smith works it to the fielder

7.6

Butler to Gibbs, no run, oh what an over, third ball in a row Butler beats Gibbs, who just isn't using his feet at all, with one thats even fuller and shaping back in gently

Butler has been good. Gets some swing, but basically knows where to pitch the ball.

9.4

Diamanti to Smith, 1 leg bye, slower ball down the leg side again, Smith brushes it to short fine

9.5

Diamanti to Gibbs, 1 run, back of a length, angling back in to Gibbs who steers a single

9.6

Diamanti to Smith, FOUR, directs a full and straight ball right on middle and off, dangerously Smith backs away, exposing all the sticks, and slashes the ball over point for four

End of over 10 (8 runs) South Africa 61/1 (RR: 6.10)

    • GC Smith 32 (32b 4x4)
    • HH Gibbs 2 (5b)
    • BJ Diamanti 2-0-19-0

Steady start. Not imposing however. Into the attack comes Styris.

10.1

Styris to Gibbs, 1 run, pitches it up on off stump and Gibbs swings it past square leg

10.2

Styris to Smith, 1 run, again he pitches it up just outside off stump, one of those seam-up wobblers, and Smith reaches out and tries to get six but miscues it over midwicket and it lands safely

10.3

Styris to Gibbs, OUT, soft dismissal that, just collects a return catch back in front of his face as Gibbs, without getting to the pitch of that gentle delivery, pops it straight back to Styris

HH Gibbs c & b Styris 3 (13m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 42.85

So the lack of pace has worked against South Africa. In comes van der Merwe ahead of de Villiers.

10.4

11.2

Butler to Smith, OUT, thats gone straight through Smith! Butler comes back and strikes immediately, pitching the ball up just outside leg stump and getting some shape, Smith plays all over the ball as he attempts to on-drive and middle and leg stumps are shattered

GC Smith b Butler 33 (55m 35b 4x4 0x6) SR: 94.28

Smith's painful innings is cut off. Out comes JP Duminy. New Zealand are on top of it.

11.3

Butler to Duminy, no run, now he holds back the length outside off stump and Duminy is beaten as he hops up and feels for that one

11.4

Butler to Duminy, no run, another dot ball, this time as Duminy pulls and misses, the ball was just not there for that shot and he connects with cold air

11.5

Butler to Duminy, 1 run, too full outside leg stump, though it swings late Duminy gets a single, just managing a wee bit of bat on ball and placing it wide of square leg

11.6

Butler to van der Merwe, no run, good ball, hits a good length, straightens, and he dabs it to point

Butler has been excellent, backed by athletic fielding. One of the ways he forced his way back into this New Zealand side was due to his performances in the domestic Twenty20.

End of over 12 (1 run) South Africa 64/3 (RR: 5.33)

    • RE van der Merwe 0 (4b)

12.3

NL McCullum to van der Merwe, no run, goes for a big reverse sweep but cannot connect, the ball is going on down the stumps and the bowler appeals too late, so not that convincing at all, but Roelof looks clueless

12.4

NL McCullum to van der Merwe, OUT, bowled em! Roelof goes for a duck, advancing down the track but only ending up yorking himself to a quicker ball that skids back in to knock back leg stump

RE van der Merwe b NL McCullum 0 (8m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Weird innings from Roelof. Thats hurt South Africa. Finally, here's AB de Villiers.

12.5

NL McCullum to de Villiers, 1 run, uses his feet first ball, coming out to collect on the full and driving it past mid-off

12.6

NL McCullum to Duminy, 2 runs, flat on off stump, Duminy shuffles and clips it past midwicket, runs hard and the man at the other end is even faster to thats excellent running thats get them two

15.5

Styris to Boucher, 1 run, attempts a yorker but cant nail it, Boucher clips in the air past square

No batsman has been allowed to break away and thats been key for New Zealand. Here's Botha.

18.6

Mills to Morkel, 1 run, good yorker outside off stump, Albie drives to mid-off for one

New Zealand's bowlers have shown how crucial the yorker is in this format.

End of over 19 (10 runs) South Africa 122/7 (RR: 6.42)

Final over coming up. South Africa 122 for 7. Albie on strike, importantly. Oram to finish it off. Around the stumps. Wicketkeeper up to the stumps.

19.1

Oram to Morkel, 1 run, another excellent yorker honing in on middle and leg and Albie can only jam it out to point for a single

19.2

Oram to Botha, 1 run, a good yorker on the stumps and Botha clips it wide of midwicket

19.3

Oram to Morkel, 2 runs, now he errs with a wide full toss, Albie swings it over mid-on

19.4

Oram to Morkel, 1 run, length ball this time, a bit wide but all Albie can get is a single cut away past the infield out to the man in the deep, excellent over from Oram so far

19.5

Oram to Botha, 1 run, out comes the reverse sweep, but not timed well so only a single

19.6

Oram to Morkel, no run, high full toss outside off stump, Albie goes to slap it and gets a thin inside edge that McGlashan, standing up to the stumps, drops but Oram is cool with it and takes his cap and walks off smiling

Really good stuff from New Zealand in the field. Butler was the pick of the attack, well supported by Nathan McCullum and Styris. No one offered too much room, they hit the right lengths, were backed up by good fielding and now need 129 to win. South Africa were sluggish. They experimented by sending Roelof higher but he made a six-ball duck. AB batted too low. I'll see you shortly for the second innings.

Bishop and Co. get confused, Ponting and Co. get packing. Off the Record goes behind the scenes.
