ICC World Twenty20, 23rd Match, Group F: New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Nottingham, Jun 16, 2009
ICC World Twenty20 - 23rd match, Group F
Sri Lanka won by 48 runs
Played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham (neutral venue)
16 June 2009 (20-over match)

1.30pm Nathan McCullum to start the proceedings.

1.25pm Nandun from Australia isn't happy with Sri Lanka's team composition either. "Chamara Silva hasn't done anything good in the whole tournament and is still kept in the team. Indika or Maharoof should have been given a shot instead of him!"

And Tharindu Amereseke from Sri Lanka doesn't think de Saram merits a place. "Indika De Saram was given two chances at practice matches and in both he did not capitalise."

We are through with the national anthems of both sides, and New Zealand are strolling towards their fielding positions.

Pakistan fans relax, your team is through.

1.20pm Abdul Qadir from Sri Lanka writes in: "Indika de Saram and Farveez Maharoof warming the bench seats of Sri Lanka reminds me of the cold treatment given by the team to Marvan Atapattu during the 2007 World Cup."

John from the UK has other cricket matters on his mind than this crucial game at Trent Bridge. "Everyone is talking about NZ vs. SL, but I've not heard a word about tonight's big Twenty20 clash between South London's two (self-proclaimed) "best rubbish cricket teams" -- the King's Road Cricket and Social Club and the Thespian Thunderers. We are going to set Tooting Common alight (note to the Met Police -- that is not a threat). "

1.10pm Net run-rate primer: NRR is calculated by total runs scored/total overs played - runs conceded/overs bowled. (If a team gets bowled out, it counts as them having played out 20 overs). So if New Zealand make 222 and win by one run, their run-rate will be 0.448 while Sri Lanka's will be 0.45. Hat tip to S Rajesh for that impressive bit of calculation.

And for a break from all the mathematics, read George Binoy's diary, where he recounts how he emerged smiling despite missing the last train home.

1.05pm There's plenty to read on Cricinfo as we wait for the first ball. Abdul Razzaq, Michael Jackson, and eighties-style allrounders all feature in Osman Samiuddin's look back at the highlights from the last six days. Read it here.

Jon Guard, an England fan, reports on last night's game against West Indies, in Fan Following.

Toss Sri Lanka win the toss and opt to bat. Sangakkara says the pitch looks flat and is hoping there's more in it for the spinners as the match progresses. One change for Sri Lanka, Isuru Udana takes the place of Nuwan Kulasekara, which means there's no game yet for Farveez Maharoof .

Some good news for New Zealand fans, Ross Taylor is back and Brendon McCullum has recovered from his damaged ligament.

12.55pm Five minutes to go for the toss, check out our preview as you wait.

One of the things an injury-hit New Zealand batting line-up will have to worry about is the toe-crushers from Lasith Malinga, who also collects tennis balls, cooks a mean curry and loves his mobile phone to bits. More about him in the Quick Singles interview.

12.45pm Sri Lanka may be unbeaten in this tournament, but a loss today against New Zealand is enough to send them crashing out. It's pretty sunny as of now in Trent Bridge, so we are likely to be spared from the trying to work out the intricacies of Duckworth/Lewis.

S Rajesh, our stats editor, points out that there is a microscopic chance that Sri Lanka qualify to the semi-finals even if they lose. He says that if New Zealand make more than 222 (or so) and beat Sri Lanka by one run, the Kiwis will be on their way home.

Don't forget - you can tune into this match's commentary online via our live audio.

Oram to Jayawardene, FOUR, Jayawardene is in fantastic form, attempts a reverse-paddle, hits it off the back of the bat and it goes just past the keeper and rolls away for four, wonderful innovation

Oram to Jayawardene, no run, good comeback from Oram, a low full toss on middle, Jayawardene gets into a tangle as tries to sweep, the ball rolls near the stumps, the batsmen doesn't know where it is and sets off for a single, then sees it and gets back in time

Oram to Jayawardene, 1 bye, tries a repeat of that reverse-paddle, doesn't make contact and the ball ricochets off the keeper's pad for a bye

It's a middling total from Sri Lanka, but they have a formidable attack, and there's a bit of spin on offer as well, which will make Murali and Mendis even more of a handful. Much of Sri Lanka's runs came from the familiar big names - Dilshan, Jayawardene and Sangakkara.

New Zealand's bowlers will be satisfied with their performance, there was clearly a plan to bowl full and wide towards the end, and they executed it well, giving away only 34 runs in the final four overs though Sri Lanka had wickets in hand.

Alex from New Zealand is very optimistic about his team's chances: "Joshi should be about right, but I'd say 160 would be a safer bet. Time to write New Zealand off, folks: their batting lineup is very poor at handling this kind of pressure."

Andy from Denmark disagrees: "Don't count New Zealand out of this match yet. They have some explosive hitters and I think this one could go right down to the wire."

End of over 20 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 158/5
