ICC Women's World Twenty20, 2nd Semi-Final: West Indies Women v New Zealand Women at Gros Islet, May 14, 2010
New Zealand Women won by 56 runs
14 May 2010 - day/night match (20-over match)

New Zealand's batsmen have made their way out. Suzie Bates and Aimee Watkins are the openers. Shakera Selman has the ball

Hello and welcome to the coverage of the second women's semi-final being played in St Lucia. West Indies have won the toss and elected to bowl against New Zealand. The hosts have big expectations to meet, especially after their male counterparts crashed out in the Super Eights.

0.1

Selman to Bates, no run, defended towards cover off the front foot

0.2

Selman to Bates, no run, pushed off the front foot towards midwicket

0.3

Selman to Bates, 1 run, gets off the mark thanks to a misfield, played towards point and they scamper a single

0.4

Selman to Watkins, 2 runs, clipped off the pads towards fine leg for a couple of runs

0.5

Selman to Watkins, no run, punched off the back foot towards cover

0.6

End of over 1 (7 runs) New Zealand Women 7/0 (RR: 7.00)

    • AL Watkins 6 (3b 1x4)
    • SW Bates 1 (3b)
    • SC Selman 1-0-7-0
1.1

Lavine to Bates, 1 run, turns the face and plays it towards midwicket for a single

1.2

Lavine to Watkins, FOUR, driven beautifully, bowled full on the off and it's driven elegantly through the covers for a boundary

1.3

Lavine to Watkins, 1 run, pushed in the direction of point for a single

1.4

Lavine to Bates, FOUR, easily done, dropped it short on middle, rocks back and pulls it away through midwicket for a boundary

Bad news, it's raining pretty heavily in St Lucia now and the covers have come on. Pretty hazy out in the middle as well. It doesn't look like there is going to be any play anytime soon, but we'll give you an update when we have one

Good news! The rain passed quickly overhead and the players are already back out on the park

1.5

Lavine to Bates, 1 run, short and met with an attempted pull by Bates, but she got a healthy top edge on it. Luckily for her it fell safely, short of fine leg

1.6

Lavine to Watkins, no run, full this time and driven hard into the covers, where the fielder completes a good tumbling stop. Really well timed there, but couldn't find the gap

End of over 2 (11 runs) New Zealand Women 18/0 (RR: 9.00)

    • AL Watkins 11 (6b 2x4)
    • SW Bates 7 (6b 1x4)
    • PY Lavine 1-0-11-0
    • SC Selman 1-0-7-0

The rain break was short enough that no time has been lost, so we still have a full game on our hands

2.1

Selman to Bates, no run, on a length on off stump, Bates clears the front leg to thrash that to mid off, where the fielder gets behind it to stop the run

2.2

Selman to Bates, OUT, gone this time! Bates came down the track and smashed the ball into the covers in the air, but Stacy-Ann King tumbled forward to grasp the ball inches from the turf. West Indies are ecstatic!

SW Bates c King b Selman 7 (8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 87.50

2.3

Selman to McGlashan, no run, Selman is finding some swing out there. This one was pitched up again, and driven - once again to King - who cuts the run off

2.4

Selman to McGlashan, no run

2.5

Selman to McGlashan, no run

2.6

Selman to McGlashan, 1 run, pitched up, flowing drive but skews only off the edge down to third man for a single

End of over 3 (1 run) New Zealand Women 19/1 (RR: 6.33)

    • SJ McGlashan 1 (4b)
    • AL Watkins 11 (6b 2x4)
    • SC Selman 2-0-8-1
    • PY Lavine 1-0-11-0
3.1

Lavine to McGlashan, 2 runs, a touch of seam movement into the batsman there, but McGlashan got across nicely to work the ball behind square on the leg side, and hard running gets them two

3.2

Lavine to McGlashan, no run, very full, McGlashan jams her bat down on it and mid off runs up to field

3.3

Lavine to McGlashan, no run, chipped just short of the mid off fielder! McGlashan was looking to nudge to leg again, but the ball took the leading edge and dropped safely in no-man's land

3.4

Lavine to McGlashan, FOUR, good comeback! Full toss was dished up and McGlashan didn't miss out, thumping the ball straight back down the ground, beating the diving mid-off, for a boundary

3.5

Lavine to McGlashan, 1 run, full toss, thrashed out to the square leg fielder

3.6

Lavine to Watkins, no run, length, dropped down defensively on the off side

End of over 4 (7 runs) New Zealand Women 26/1 (RR: 6.50)

    • AL Watkins 11 (7b 2x4)
    • SJ McGlashan 8 (9b 1x4)
    • PY Lavine 2-0-18-0
    • SC Selman 2-0-8-1

And we have spin introduced early on

4.1

Taylor to McGlashan, 1 run, on the mark first up, but McGlashan gets across to nudge the ball into space on the leg side

4.2

Taylor to Watkins, 1 run, pushed into the off side. The fielders are all quite deep, right on the edge of the circle, and that wasn't hit very hard so they have time to sprint through for one

4.3

Taylor to McGlashan, no run, she skips down the track to get to the pitch, but ends up yorking herself, punching to mid on

4.4

Taylor to McGlashan, no run, width given, but McGlashan can't capitalise, picking out point with the cut

4.5

Taylor to McGlashan, 1 run, runs this time, as McGlashan finds the gap with a square drive. Not timed well though, so it'll only be one

4.6

Taylor to Watkins, FOUR, shot! Watkins rocks back as the ball is dished up fractionally short on off stump, placing the cut perfectly to beat the field and collect another boundary

End of over 5 (7 runs) New Zealand Women 33/1 (RR: 6.60)

    • AL Watkins 16 (9b 3x4)
    • SJ McGlashan 10 (13b 1x4)
    • SR Taylor 1-0-7-0
    • PY Lavine 2-0-18-0

Daley into the attack now, with her left-arm spin

5.1

Daley to McGlashan, 2 runs, too straight, allowing McGlashan to shuffle across and flick the ball to leg. A slight misfield allows them to rush back for a second

5.2

Daley to McGlashan, no run, once again McGlashan looks to work the ball to leg, but this time her clipped drive finds midwicket

5.3

Daley to McGlashan, FOUR, thrashed! McGlashan used her feet once again, getting to the pitch nicely. That was an unapologetic hoick across the line, but she pulled it off superbly

5.4

Daley to McGlashan, 3 wides, well, the ball must be getting a little slippery on this wet outfield. This one's been fired wide down leg, and what's more the keeper couldn't stop it so they run two as well

5.4

Daley to McGlashan, 1 run, full and flicked out, beating the midwicket fielder, for one

5.5

Daley to Watkins, no run, well-flighted there, Watkins came out to meet the ball but couldn't quite get to the pitch, tapping softly into the covers

5.6

Daley to Watkins, 1 run, high full toss! Lucky not to be called on that one. It must've just slipped out, but slipped very high as Watkins pulled it away to leg

End of over 6 (11 runs) New Zealand Women 44/1 (RR: 7.33)

    • AL Watkins 17 (11b 3x4)
    • SJ McGlashan 17 (17b 2x4)
    • SF Daley 1-0-11-0
    • SR Taylor 1-0-7-0

Stafanie Taylor into the attack now

6.1

Taylor to Watkins, no run, tossed up invitingly on off stump, Watkins stretched forward to drive but aimed her shot straight at the cover fielder

6.2

Taylor to Watkins, 1 run, similarly full, but the placement was much better on the shot this time as she opened the face to send the ball square

6.3

Taylor to McGlashan, no run, she's really flighting the ball here. McGlashan came forward to drive, but sent it straight to the fielder

6.4

Taylor to McGlashan, no run, full again and thrashed straight back to the bowler, who threatens to throw down the non-striker's stumps

6.5

Taylor to McGlashan, 1 run, full toss, driven out to long off for one

6.6

Taylor to Watkins, 2 runs, nice shot, again Watkins just opened the face on the drive to pick the gap behind square on the off side. The cover sweeper runs round to cut it off though

End of over 7 (4 runs) New Zealand Women 48/1 (RR: 6.85)

    • AL Watkins 20 (14b 3x4)
    • SJ McGlashan 18 (20b 2x4)
    • SR Taylor 2-0-11-0
    • SF Daley 1-0-11-0

So, New Zealand have built a solid foundation after the early loss of Suzie Bates, with Watkins and McGlashan both appearing comfortable and well-set at the crease

7.1

Mohammed to McGlashan, 1 run, loopy full toss from Mohammed first up, and it's bunted down the ground for one

They're wiping the ball with a rag every time it's hit into the outfield, must still be a little damp out there

7.2

Mohammed to Watkins, no run, on the legs from over the wicket, and clipped to midwicket

7.3

Mohammed to Watkins, no run, Watkins comes down the track but Mohammed saw her coming, firing it in a little quicker

7.4

Mohammed to Watkins, OUT, West Indies strike again! And that's the big wicket of the captain Aimee Watkins. What a catch it was to get rid of her too. Watkins charged out to drive, lofting down the ground. But she got too far underneath, sending up a steepling chance. King circled underneath it, and kept calm to take a good, safe catch

AL Watkins c King b Mohammed 20 (17b 3x4 0x6) SR: 117.64

7.5

Mohammed to McGlashan, 1 run, another full toss, and driven out to long off for one

7.6

Mohammed to Devine, 2 runs, a tossed-up delivery on off stump is met with a classy drive from Sophie Devine. The shot was timed really well, but there's a fielder out on the boundary now that the Powerplay is done, so they're kept to two

End of over 8 (4 runs) New Zealand Women 52/2 (RR: 6.50)

    • SFM Devine 2 (1b)
    • SJ McGlashan 20 (22b 2x4)
    • A Mohammed 1-0-4-1
    • SR Taylor 2-0-11-0

And we have a change of ball now, the old one must have gotten too soggy rolling over the damp outfield

8.1

Daley to McGlashan, 1 run, dished up wide of off and hammered out to long off

8.2

Daley to Devine, no run, she pulls the length back a touch, and is tapped out into the covers off the back foot

8.3

Daley to Devine, 1 run, runs this time, as the ball is thrashed out to the cover sweeper

8.4

Daley to McGlashan, 2 runs, inventive paddle-sweep from McGlashan this time, as she sends the ball fine of the short fine leg fielder for two

8.5

Daley to McGlashan, 1 run, pushed down the ground this time, as long on runs in to field

8.6

Daley to Devine, 1 run, width offered outside off, and Devine sends the ball out to the cover sweeper off the back foot

End of over 9 (6 runs) New Zealand Women 58/2 (RR: 6.44)

    • SFM Devine 4 (4b)
    • SJ McGlashan 24 (25b 2x4)
    • SF Daley 2-0-17-0

9.1

Mohammed to Devine, no run, ooh, Devine is beaten on the cut! The ball wasn't all that short, but she rocked back and was beaten by the lack of bounce

9.2

Mohammed to Devine, no run, punched to mid on

9.3

Mohammed to Devine, 2 runs, was that an edge? She was looking to play the ball fine on the off side, but got inside it a little and the ball rolled off the edge wide of short third man

9.4

Mohammed to Devine, 1 run, tip and run cricket this time, as the ball is dropped into the off side and they set off immediately

9.5

Mohammed to McGlashan, 1 run, McGlashan comes out to turn the ball into a full toss, driving out to long on

9.6

Mohammed to Devine, no run, flighted, and Devine stretches out to defend back towards the bowler

10.1

Daley to McGlashan, 1 run, pushed out into the covers, where a slight fumble from the fielder allows them to scamper through

10.2

Daley to Devine, 1 wide, quicker ball fired in, but she's darted it down the leg side, and rightfully called wide

left-arm spinner coming over the wicket now

10.2

Daley to Devine, 1 run, pushed out into the covers off the back foot. The fielder made a good tumbling stop, but couldn't stop the single

10.3

Daley to McGlashan, 2 runs, McGlashan is using her feet really well here, turning it into a full toss and picking up runs down the ground

10.4

Daley to McGlashan, 2 runs, too far outside off, and McGlashan picks up more runs on the off side

10.5

Daley to McGlashan, 2 runs, and two more! New Zealand are picking the gaps and running hard, as she finds the gap in the cover field once again

10.6

Daley to McGlashan, 1 run, fuller this time, but wide of off and McGlashan drives down to long off for one

End of over 11 (10 runs) New Zealand Women 72/2 (RR: 6.54)

Change of 'keepers now, as Campbelle gives up the gloves for Cooper

11.1

Mohammed to McGlashan, 2 runs, short and wide of off, crunched out square off the back foot and a slight misfield from Campbelle allows them to get back for two

11.2

Mohammed to McGlashan, 2 runs, two more to the total, as the batters run hard to make the most of a shot pushed out on the off side

11.3

Mohammed to McGlashan, SIX, big hit! McGlashan is taking the initiative here, skipping down the track to meet the ball on the half volley and send the ball in an arc way over long on's head. Superb strike

11.4

Mohammed to McGlashan, 1 run, good, intelligent batting here, as she rotates the strike

11.5

Mohammed to Devine, SIX, Devine! That was a divine shot! She met a full toss with a full swing of the blade to send the ball soaring into the stands, an 80-metre six!

11.6

Mohammed to Devine, 1 run, width given on the off side, and Devine slaps the ball down in front of square to pick up one more and keep the strike

West Indies desperately need another wicket to break an ominous-looking partnership

12.1

Campbelle to Devine, 2 runs, and Campbelle, who had the keeping pads on not too long ago, starts with a loopy full toss that is thrashed out on the leg side. Slows up on the wet outfield though

12.2

12.3

Campbelle to McGlashan, 1 run, pushed out past midwicket for another run

Campbelle to McGlashan, no run, no run this time, as the cover fielder swoops in

12.6

Campbelle to McGlashan, 2 leg byes, pushed down leg this time, and they pick up two off the pad as the fielder is a bit slow to get round from short fine leg to cut it off

A change in the bowling, and we have pace, with Deandra Dottin into the attack now!

13.1

Dottin to Devine, 3 wides, not the greatest of starts, sloppy all round as Dottin fired down a leg side wide, the keeper fumbled, and the fielder then gave away an overthrow

50 partnership up

13.1

Dottin to Devine, 1 run, driven out through the covers

13.2

Dottin to McGlashan, 1 wide, another wide from Dottin, which the 'keeper half-stopped. They don't risk the run though

13.2

Dottin to McGlashan, 2 runs, slog swept out to deep midwicket

13.3

Dottin to McGlashan, FOUR, swung away on the leg side again, she nailed the slog sweep, and that's McGlashan's first international T20 half century! And what a time to get it too

13.4

Dottin to McGlashan, FOUR, four more! Too short from Dottin this time, and McGlashan leans back to middle a powerful pull out to square leg. Top shot

13.5

Dottin to McGlashan, 2 runs, much better from Dottin, zoning in on the yorker length, but McGlashan jams her bat down on it very hard and they pick up two runs, amazingly, on the leg side

13.6

Dottin to McGlashan, 2 runs, dropped! Daley was the fielder circling underneath a swirling, top-edged drive from McGlashan, but she couldn't hold on to the chance. A costly drop!

Campbelle to Devine, 1 run, dinked down the ground

14.2

14.3

Campbelle to McGlashan, SIX, six! She's smashed that, straight down the ground and it's comfortably beat the long on fielder. New Zealand are cruising now

14.4

Campbelle to McGlashan, 1 run, short, wide, and thrashed out square on the leg side

14.5

Campbelle to Devine, FOUR, Devine came down the track, looking to hit that straight, but it was a quicker one, short and wide on off and she re-adjusted beautifully to carve it behind point for four more runs

14.6

Campbelle to Devine, no run, quiet end to an eventful over, as Devine drops the ball defensively on the leg side

New Zealand are heading for a huge total here

15.1

King to McGlashan, no run, McGlashan goes for the cheeky guide past the keeper but can't connect

15.2

King to McGlashan, 1 wide, was that an attempted dil-scoop? She went down into the shot, but the ball was too full and too wide of off

15.2

King to McGlashan, 2 runs, lofted inside-out over cover and they scamper two

15.3

King to McGlashan, 1 run, McGlashan tries to loft a half-volley down the ground but the ball balloons up off the toe. Luckily for her she timed it so badly that it didn't reach the long on fielder

15.4

King to Devine, 1 wide, much too wide of off again

15.4

King to Devine, 2 runs, full and wide of off, driven in the air down to long off and a fumble allows them to get two

15.5

King to Devine, 1 run, driven hard into the covers, and a great stop from the fielder keeps them to one

15.6

King to McGlashan, 2 runs, McGlashan is down on one knee for the slog-sweep to leg once again, and manic running gets them two more. There was half a chance for a run-out there, but the throw didn't quite come in quickly or accurately enough

Shakera Selman comes back into the attack

16.1

Selman to Devine, OUT, high full toss to start, Devine tries to smash it down the ground with a baseball-style smear, but succeeded only in getting a tame top edge, which was gratefully snaffled at mid off.

SFM Devine c King b Selman 27 (22b 1x4 1x6) SR: 122.72

So, West Indies have the wicket, but McGlashan is still there and New Zealand are still very much in the dominant position here

16.2

Selman to McGlashan, 2 runs, should have been a run out there! McGlashan drove a full ball out to Dottin on the cover boundary, she fired in the return throw with the batters stranded mid pitch. Selman couldn't gather cleanly though, and the throw was too wide

16.3

Selman to McGlashan, 2 runs, McGlashan is down on one knee again, lofting a slog sweep behind square on the leg side. The shot beat short fine leg but plugged in the outfield

16.4

Selman to McGlashan, 1 no ball, good ball, a yorker, but she's overstepped, so that'll be a free hit

16.4

Selman to McGlashan, FOUR, and she's taken full toll of that, a length ball on off stump and McGlashan swung powerfully right across the line to send the ball behind square on the leg side, splitting the field to perfection. She moves into the 80s!

16.5

Selman to McGlashan, 1 run, full toss on the pads, and McGlashan is very quickly into the slog sweep, but there's a fielder out behind square on the leg side for the shot now, so that's just one

16.6

Selman to Browne, 1 run, full on off stump, and driven very hard out to the cover sweeper for Browne to keep the strike

17.2

King to Browne, no run, crashed straight to the cover fielder, they decline the run

17.3

King to Browne, OUT, gone! McGlashan is run out by a great piece of fielding from Selman at short third man. The ball was chopped down to her left and the batters charged through. The fielder swooped round and fired in a sharp return which caught her inches short. A fine innings from McGlashan comes to an end

SJ McGlashan run out 84 (55b 6x4 2x6) SR: 152.72

17.4

King to Priest, no run, play and miss first ball, as she flashes underneath a length ball wide of off

17.5

King to Priest, no run, on the legs and she shapes to work the ball to leg, but is struck on the pad

17.6

Selman to Priest, 1 run, on a length on off stump, and punched out into the covers for a run

18.2

Selman to Browne, 2 runs, a mighty swing from the batter, but she couldn't find the middle of the bat and the deep midwicket fielder ran round to cut it off

18.3

Selman to Browne, 1 run, was that another run out? No, the throw was good as Browne crunched a drive to mid on and they set off, but the stumps were broken by Selman's hand before they were struck by the ball

18.4

Selman to Priest, 1 run, bunted down the ground

18.5

Selman to Browne, 1 run, good straight hit there! But long off sprints across to cut it off and hurls in the return

18.6

Selman to Priest, 2 runs, well placed there, the ball was full and wide of off and Priest lofted it handsomely over the covers and into space. But the fielder ran round to cut off the shot

Last over coming up...

19.1

King to Browne, 1 wide, poor ball from left-arm seamer King, firing the ball way too wide of off from over the wicket

19.1

King to Browne, 2 wides, and that's even wider, and they collect a bye as well as the 'keeper can't cut it off

19.1

King to Priest, 1 run, chipped airily down the ground, falling short of long off and they sprint through

19.2

King to Browne, 2 runs, smashed out to square leg, where the fielder cuts it off

19.3

King to Browne, 2 runs, hit down the ground this time, and they collect two more

19.4

King to Browne, SIX, huge six! Browne was offered a full toss and responded with a massive strike over square leg. That takes New Zealand to the highest total of the tournament

19.5

King to Browne, 1 wide, King is losing the plot here, firing this one way wide of off again

19.5

King to Browne, 1 wide, and she over-adjusts this time, pushing the ball down the leg side

19.5

King to Browne, 1 leg bye, that's much better, pushed full and straight to beat the batter's heave to leg. They run a leg bye all the same

19.6

King to Priest, 1 run, OUT, King just misses the yorker length and is hammered out to deep midwicket, Priest sprints back for the second but is just short as the 'keeper whips off the bails

RH Priest run out 7 (8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 87.50

So, a very dominant batting display from New Zealand has taken them to a superb position from which to launch themselves into the final of the tournament. Sara McGlashan was phenomenal with the bat, striking the ball cleanly to power her way to 84 from just 55 balls. West Indies have some big hitters in their line-up, but they will need to bat very well indeed to chase down a mammoth total under lights with an outfield that has slowed up considerably with all the rain around. Do stay with us for their attempt, infront of a large, noisy home crowd, to chase down these runs!
