Major Ellis George Whately was in the Eton XI in 1900 and 1901. In the first year, although he took five wickets for 59 runs in the second innings, he was on the losing side against Harrow, who got home by one wicket. The next season, when he was captain, he played innings of 45 and 40, but again Harrow won, this time by ten wickets. He played for Somerset in 1904 and in later years for Hertfordshire and Middlesex Second XI.
