John de Lisle spent his early life in India, returning to England in 1925 where he became a stockbroker as well as managing the family estates in Leicestershire. Described as a man with a passion for physical fitness, he captained Leicestershire in 1930, although he had first appeared while on leave in 1921. He made 72 and a career-best 88 on debut, but in his remaining 32 first-class matches he only averaged 8.40 with a highest score of 28.
