Major Charles Packe, killed in Normandy in July, aged 35, played intermittently for Leicestershire from 1932. When he first appeared for the county the committee could not find a regular captain, and Packe was one of six amateurs who undertook the duty during the season. A fair batsman, he never found his best form in county cricket, but for The Army in 1938 he scored 176 at Cambridge against the University, and another fine innings was his 145 for The Army against R.A.F. at Aldershot in 1938. He was a fine, free-hitting batsman.
