A brisk offspinner and a useful batsman, Richard Gordon Garlick, who died in Blackpool on May 16, aged 71, played 44 matches for Lancashire between 1938 and 1947 before moving to Northamptonshire for three seasons during which he made 77 appearances. His best bowling came in his penultimate season with Lancashire, when he took 6 for 27 (10 for 46 in the match) against Derbyshire at Buxton. He returned to league cricket after a successful season in 1950, which saw him at the top of Northants' averages with 86 wickets at 23.80. He ended his first-class career with 1664 runs (13.87), with a highest score of 62 not out at Worcester in his final season, and 332 wickets (26.11). A good fielder, he also took 39 catches.
