Tony Howard was an offspinner with a good faster ball which went straight on, whose international opportunities were almost completely stifled by the presence of Lance Gibbs. His one chance came against New Zealand in April 1972 - his selection ahead of Gibbs upset the Georgetown crowd - where he took 2 for 140 (although West Indies only took three wickets in the entire game as New Zealand scored 543 for 3). He was not chosen again. And he almost didn't win that one cap at all as his son was born on the day he was selected and his wife said that he would "be mad to play" - but he did. Howard was part of a very strong Barbados side for several seasons, and retired at a young age to pursue a career in business. He remained involved in cricket and in 1998 took over as manager of Barbados, winning four domestic titles before he was appointed to manage West Indies in March, 2004.
