Better known as one of the great rugby three-quarters of his day, Leonard Crawley won 16 caps for England, including two as captain, and was also a good cricketer, who, in nine matches for Gloucestershire between 1920 and 1925, made 373 runs with an average of 20.72, his highest score being 55 in the August Bank Holiday match against Somerset in 1923 at a time when the side was doing very badly. Perhaps one who well remembers fielding in a club match while he made a hundred may be allowed to say that if he had the opportunity to play regularly he would have been invaluable to the county. Moving with all the ease of a natural games player, he had beautiful strokes and made batting look very simple; moreover he was, as one would expect, a superb field. In later life he wrote well both on rugger and cricket for the Sunday Times.
