Zimbabwe Twenty20 Triangular Series - 1st match

Zimbabwe XI v Bangladesh XI

Zimbabwe XI won by 11 runs

12:30: Hello and welcome to ESPNCricinfo's coverage of the first match in this unofficial tri-series between Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and South Africa. All the games will take place at Harare Sports Club and in today's encounter the hosts play Bangladesh, while South Africa flew out of Johannesburg early this morning, with their first fixture scheduled for Tuesday. While we wait for the toss, here's a reminder of the warm-up match between Zimbabwe's Select XI and Bangladeshis. Hamilton Masakadza's ton won the match for the hosts.

Toss: Zimbabwe have won the toss and will bat first.

Teams: Zimbabwe: Hamiton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda is back in the side, Brendan Taylor will take the gloves, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Craig Ervine, Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Prosper Utseya, Kyle Jarvis, Chris Mpofu is back after a lower back injury. Richard Muzhange, who Jason Gillespie has called the best death bowler in the country.

Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal, Jahurul Islam, Mohammad Ashraful is back Mushfiqur Rahim, Ziaur Raman, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Sunny, Mashrafe Mortaza, Abul Hasan, Abdur Razzaq

By the way, I'm Firdose Moonda and I'll be taking you through the week. We also welcome back a familiar face. Liam Brickhill be typing up today's bulletin. In typical Southern African style, a big howzit and welcome back to you, Liam.

Zimbabwe have not played any cricket since their January series against New Zealand. Perhaps even more worrying is that the only cricket they have scheduled this year, besides this tournament, is an A series with South Africa and Sri Lanka's second sides and the World T20. Quite sad news after that fairytale comeback last August, which was a pleasure to watch and cover.

Bangladesh have a new coach with them. Richard Pybus is in charge. He had two fairly good seasons in South Africa with the Cobras and it will be very interesting to see how his innovative methods work in Bangladesh.

Alistair Campbell says its not that cold in Harare. Around 22 degrees Celsius and a bit of a breeze. The pitch will be interesting though, remember it is winter here in Southern Africa.

Worth remembering that Zimbabwe and South Africa are in the same group in the World T20 while Bangladesh are grouped with New Zealand and Pakistan.

Brendan Taylor notes that the pitch is a bit dry and wants to get runs on the board first. Mushfiqur Rahim says it will be difficult to judge what a good total will be but hopes for early breakthroughs.

In the words of Danny Morrison, "Here we go..." Bangladesh are on the field, so are the Zimbabwe openers.

Mashrafe Mortaza to bowl to Hamilton Masakadza.

0.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, 1 run, good length, outside off, turned around to mid-wicket for a comfortable single, Masakadza off the mark

0.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sibanda, no run, appeal for lbw, wraps Sibanda on the pad, just on leg stump and seems to be going down

0.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sibanda, no run, and again, Mortaza getting some movement as that comes back into Sibanda and another stifled appeal

0.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sibanda, 1 run, Sibanda pleased to get off strike there, nudges it into the off side and scampers through, Masakadza a little slow to get going

0.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, no run, Another near-mix up! Masakadza wants the run, then doesn't and eventually decides to stay put.

0.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, FOUR, and the over ends with a boundary. Too short from Mortaza, Masakadza is into it quickly and pulls powerfully, one bounce four.

1.5

Abdur Razzak to Masakadza, 1 run, nudged into the leg side and another single taken, so far a very good over from Razzak

That's the third false start from Razzak this over.

1.6

Abdur Razzak to Sibanda, no run, Beats the bat and hits Sibanda on the pad, missing leg as the keeper is the only one that appeals, good start from Razzak

End of over 2 (2 runs) Zimbabwe XI 8/0

H Masakadza    6* (5b 1x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    1-0-6-0

This from Gareth: Lanka/Pak/India play each other two dozen times a year and Zimbabwe get three series in a year. I could think of a few more creative acronyms for 'FTP'... What do you think of the FTP?

2.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, no run, Masakadza beaten as he tried to work the ball to third man, no footwork,

2.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, no run, short from Mortaza, directed at Masakadza's elbows, he can't get under it to pull this time and has to be content with a defensive shot

2.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, FOUR, Masakadza wants to break free, goes over the top but doesn't get enough bat on it. It's still enough for a boundary over point, just a hint of room given from Mortaza

2.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, no run, good length, doesn't allow Masakadza anything, defended back to the bowler

2.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, FOUR, beautiful application, Masakadza turns that straight one around the corner and he has timed it well too, that's four. Quick outfield at Harare Sports Club too

2.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, 1 run, tucks him up this time, Masakadza pushes into the off side and keeps strike with a single

End of over 3 (9 runs) Zimbabwe XI 17/0
H Masakadza    15* (11b 3x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-15-0
V Sibanda    2* (7b)      Abdur Razzak    1-0-2-0

3.1

Abdur Razzak to Masakadza, FOUR, Excellent use of the feet there from Masakadza, overpitches from Razzak and Masakadza dances down and hits over extra cover. He looks in great nick

3.2

Abdur Razzak to Masakadza, no run, turned to the leg side, no run there

3.3

Abdur Razzak to Masakadza, no run, almost plays on! Masakadza looks to pull as Razzak gives him room but finds only fresh air

3.4

Abdur Razzak to Masakadza, no run, on the back foot, threaded into the off side

3.5

Abdur Razzak to Masakadza, 1 run, off the back foot again, played to mid-wicket and Masakadza needs to put the skids on. Direct hit and he is just safe at the bowler's end. He has been lumbering a little, hasn't he?

3.6

Abdur Razzak to Sibanda, no run, beats the bat this time, Sibanda looks to play on the leg side but can't read the turn

End of over 4 (5 runs) Zimbabwe XI 22/0
V Sibanda    2* (8b)      Abdur Razzak    2-0-7-0
H Masakadza    20* (16b 4x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-15-0

Lovely to hear the traditional Shosholoza playing over the loudspeakers. One of my favourite tunes.

4.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, no run, That's cracked into the covers, too full from Mortaza and Masakadza is onto it but its well fielded and there's no run.

4.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, no run, left alone as the ball just keeps a little low

4.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, 1 run, dragged from outside off to the leg side, easy single

4.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sibanda, no run, guided off the face of the bat to the third man region, again, some good fielding from Bangladesh to ensure Sibanda cannot find the run. He's having a tough time

4.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Sibanda, 1 bye, good length from Mortaza, slower ball, Sibanda can't get to it, neither can the keeper and there's a bye for Zimbabwe

4.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Masakadza, SIX, Masakadza! Down town! Short again from Mortaza and Hamilton loves that leg side. He smacks that over mid-wicket, giving it the treatment in a big way.

End of over 5 (8 runs) Zimbabwe XI 30/0
H Masakadza    27* (20b 4x4 1x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-22-0
V Sibanda    2* (10b)      Abdur Razzak    2-0-7-0

New bowler, 19-year old Abul Hasan. Haven't seen him before

5.1

Abul Hasan to Sibanda, 1 run, starts off with a full delivery, played into the covers, good cricket all round, well fielded and well ran

5.2

Abul Hasan to Masakadza, SIX, Masakadza's having a great time here, too full, slower ball and he gets under it nicely to strike that over mid-off for his second big one

5.3

Abul Hasan to Masakadza, FOUR, Poor Hasan is having quite an introduction here, goes for the slower ball again and its too short. Masakadza makes room and slices through the covers for four more

5.4

Abul Hasan to Masakadza, 1 run, better directed, cramps him for room and just the one

5.5

Abul Hasan to Sibanda, no run, short for Sibanda but he can't get to the pull shot, still battling a little

5.6

Abul Hasan to Sibanda, FOUR, and now Sibanda gets hold of it, goes down the ground, frees the arms and hits cleanly. Tough first over for Abul here but a good one for Zimbabwe

End of over 6 (16 runs) Zimbabwe XI 46/0
V Sibanda    7* (13b 1x4)      Abul Hasan    1-0-16-0
H Masakadza    38* (23b 5x4 2x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-22-0

Sunny replaces Razzak

6.1

Elias Sunny to Masakadza, 1 run, neatly played into the leg side, and better running from the two as well.

6.2

Elias Sunny to Sibanda, no run, oooohhh, that's a good ball, beats the bat as Sibanda looks to carve away on the off side, didnt seem to know what to do with that one

6.3

Elias Sunny to Sibanda, OUT, and Sunny gets his man, Sibanda walks past that one, doesn't read the turn at all, not that there was that much of it, but he hasn't looked comfortable at all. Mushfiqur has enough time to dislodge the bails and the Zimbabwean opener is on his way

V Sibanda st †Mushfiqur Rahim b Elias Sunny 7 (29m 15b 1x4 0x6) SR: 46.66

Brendan Taylor, the captain, has arrived at the crease

6.4

Elias Sunny to Taylor, 1 run, Immediately off the mark, played into the off side and Masakadza is back on strike

6.5

Elias Sunny to Masakadza, 1 run, Good calm batting from Masakadza, turns the strike over with a comfortable single

6.6

Elias Sunny to Taylor, 1 run, Taylor brings up the Zimbabwean 50 with a single to mid-on. It's come in seven overs at a rate of just over seven, so fairly good going for the hosts

End of over 7 (4 runs) Zimbabwe XI 50/1
BRM Taylor    2* (2b)      Elias Sunny    1-0-4-1
H Masakadza    40* (25b 5x4 2x6)      Abul Hasan    1-0-16-0

7.1

Abul Hasan to Taylor, no run, better from Abul, straight and good length, Taylor defends on the front foot on the leg side. He's never been one to use his feet either.

7.2

Abul Hasan to Taylor, 2 runs, some room outside off, Taylor's on the back foot, thumps it into the off side and takes two

7.3

Abul Hasan to Taylor, no run, nice and full, Taylor can only defend, Abul is having a much better over here against the new batsman

7.4

Abul Hasan to Taylor, 1 run, good hands, Taylor guides it down to third man, still thinks his feet are simply painted on as he refuses to move them

7.5

Abul Hasan to Masakadza, 1 run, come room for Masakadza who slashes down to deep cover, there's a man there so he can only get the one

7.6

Abul Hasan to Taylor, no run, lots of room for Taylor now but if he won't move his feet, what does he expect will happen? His arms are going though, and he finds cover. Good over from young Abul

End of over 8 (4 runs) Zimbabwe XI 54/1
BRM Taylor    5* (7b)      Abul Hasan    2-0-20-0

H Masakadza    43* (28b 5x4 2x6)      Abul Hasan    2-0-20-0

Some more from Gareth: "I would have loved to see Namibia in this series. They're not a test playing nation, but in the T20 Qualifiers they really shook things up and are unlucky not to be getting a berth this September." Namibia did have a very good run in the Qualifiers and have been using Darryl Cullinan's help as well

9.1

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, no run, quite a start from Rahman, fairly quick and strikes BT on the pads, massive appeal but seems to have hit him outside the line. Taylor survives

9.2

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, 1 run, short this time and pulled to fine leg, there's a man there, so just the one

9.3

Ziaur Rahman to Masakadza, 1 run, cheeky from Masakadza, too wide of offstump and he gets down on one knee and plays a flick on the leg side, its in the air for a while, a little bit risky, but safe

9.4

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, no run, Taylor's having a go, big heave-ho on the leg side and he misses completely, that was a slower one and he is lucky to still be there

9.5

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, 5 wides, unlucky, Rahman, searches for the yorker but misses it and the ball goes down the leg side, Mushfiqur dives over it and that's five wides

9.5

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, 1 run, no risks from Taylor now, plays down to long-on for a single

9.6

Ziaur Rahman to Masakadza, no run, All in all a good over from Rahman, besides the five wides, Masakadza wants to guide down to third man and misses. Zimbabwe reach the halfway stage at 70-1, they'll be eyeing a score in excess of 150.

End of over 10 (8 runs) Zimbabwe XI 70/1
H Masakadza    44* (30b 5x4 2x6)      Ziaur Rahman    1-0-8-0

Mahmudullah comes on to bowl some offspin

10.1

Mahmudullah to Taylor, 1 run, punched down to mid-off

10.2

Mahmudullah to Masakadza, SIX, flighted and wide and Masakadza gets under it to bring up his 50. The man at long on was thinking he may be in with a chance but doesn't jump at all and it's a good result for Masakadza, who has come back into form in a big way,

10.3

Mahmudullah to Masakadza, FOUR, short and cut away for another four

10.4

Mahmudullah to Masakadza, 1 run, the hard work has been done this over, just an ambled single to long-off

10.5

Mahmudullah to Taylor, no run, Taylor works it into the leg-side

10.6

Mahmudullah to Taylor, 1 run, full and driven down to long-on, just the one but a very productive over for Zimbabwe

End of over 11 (13 runs) Zimbabwe XI 83/1
BRM Taylor    15* (18b 1x4)      Mahmudullah    1-0-13-0
H Masakadza    55* (33b 6x4 3x6)      Ziaur Rahman    1-0-8-0

11.1

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, no run, that's a good ball, full and slow and Taylor can't get it away, he can keep it out though

11.2

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, 1 run, full again and turned into the leg side, Taylor thinks about two but decides against it, wisely so

11.3

Ziaur Rahman to Masakadza, SIX, room for Masakadza and he is not going to say no to that. Swatted over long-on, no foot movement at all, none needed actually. There's a man on the rope but he knows there's no chance. A fourth six for Hamilton

11.4

Ziaur Rahman to Masakadza, 1 run, cut through the off side, short from Rahman, but not too much damage caused

11.5

Ziaur Rahman to Taylor, OUT, run-out referral risky, risky from Zimbabwe. Taylor plays to point and there's quick work been done from the fielder there, its Mahmudullah. Masakadza had to hurry and we've seen him struggle a little with speed in this innings. Mushfiqur performed some nifty work behind the stumps as he gets the bails off just as Masakadza grounds his bat. Tight call but it looked as though the bat was on the line as the bails were removed. Masakadza's a goner. Good innings from him, though

H Masakadza run out 62 (52m 35b 6x4 4x6) SR: 177.14

11.6

Ziaur Rahman to Ervine, no run, Craig Ervine defends his first ball on the off-side. Not a lot of time for rebuilding though

End of over 12 (8 runs) Zimbabwe XI 91/2
CR Ervine    0* (1b)      Ziaur Rahman    2-0-16-0
BRM Taylor    16* (21b 1x4)      Mahmudullah    1-0-13-0

12.1

Mahmudullah to Taylor, 1 run, tucked around the corner for a single. Quick running now from these two

12.2

Mahmudullah to Ervine, OUT, Oh Zimbabwe! What's going on? Very silly, indeed. Ervine hits the ball straight to the fielder and sets off for the run mindlessly. By the time he turns back, its too late as the throw comes in accurately from Nasir Hossain and Mushfiqur has a much easier task that he did with Masakadza. The bat is clearly behind the line as the wicket is broken and that's a second run-out.

CR Ervine run out 0 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

12.3

Mahmudullah to Matsikenyeri, no run, bit of turn there and Matsikenyeri defends

12.4

Mahmudullah to Matsikenyeri, 1 leg bye, worked to short fine leg, nifty fielding but no run-out chances this time

Mahmudullah to Taylor, 1 run, pushed down to long-on, Taylor trying to calm things down a touch

12.6

Mahmudullah to Matsikenyeri, no run, Taylor's halfway down the pitch as the no is called, but no risks again this time. Matsikenyeri plays on the leg side and refuses the run, which probably wasn't there anyway

End of over 13 (3 runs) Zimbabwe XI 94/3
S Matsikenyeri    0* (3b)      Mahmudullah    2-0-15-0
BRM Taylor    18* (23b 1x4)      Ziaur Rahman    2-0-16-0

13.5

Abdur Razzak to Taylor, 1 run, Some room for Taylor and another single

13.6

Abdur Razzak to Matsikenyeri, no run, End of a good over from Razzak, six left

End of over 14 (3 runs) Zimbabwe XI 97/3
S Matsikenyeri    1* (6b)      Abdur Razzak    3-0-10-0
BRM Taylor    20* (26b 1x4)      Mahmudullah    2-0-15-0

Spin from both ends, Sunny's back too

14.1

Elias Sunny to Taylor, no run, comes forward and the ball turns past the bat, just misses the outside edge

14.2

Elias Sunny to Taylor, SIX, some turn again and Taylor's got hold of it, gently but effectively. Brings up the 100 by scooping over the off-side, goes very high and over the rope for his first six

14.3

Elias Sunny to Taylor, 2 runs, scrambled single on the leg-side and there's a misfield which allows for an easy second

14.4

Elias Sunny to Taylor, 2 runs, similar stroke from Taylor as he played two balls ago, finds the gap on the off side and gets two, its in the air for a while but perfectly safe

14.5

Elias Sunny to Taylor, no run, comes forward and gets a leading edge but it falls safely

14.6

Elias Sunny to Taylor, 1 run, nicely worked to long-on, Taylor really starting to use his feet well against the spin

End of over 15 (11 runs) Zimbabwe XI 108/3
BRM Taylor    31* (32b 1x4 1x6)      Elias Sunny    3-0-23-1

15.1

Abdur Razzak to Taylor, 1 run, Worked down to long off

15.2

Abdur Razzak to Matsikenyeri, FOUR, Matsikenyeri gets it through the gap between point and third man, good timing on it and he finds the boundary

15.3

Abdur Razzak to Matsikenyeri, 1 leg bye, big appeal as the batsman attempts the sweep but its full and he cant get hold of it. Going down leg though

15.4

Abdur Razzak to Taylor, 1 run, rushed into that shot as he Taylor works on the leg-side, good pace from Razzak

15.5

Abdur Razzak to Matsikenyeri, no run, full and kept out

15.6

Abdur Razzak to Matsikenyeri, FOUR, full again but Matsikenyeri has a fraction more time and hits that straight down the ground with some power

End of over 16 (11 runs) Zimbabwe XI 119/3

BRM Taylor    33* (34b 1x4 1x6)      Elias Sunny    3-0-23-1

16.1

Elias Sunny to Taylor, 1 run, plays a bit early on that, tries to get it away but just the one

16.2

Elias Sunny to Matsikenyeri, no run, just misses it as he looks for that boundary behind third-man

16.3

Elias Sunny to Matsikenyeri, 1 run, full toss and dropped from the bowler. Taylor should have stepped up and smacked it but he doesnt

16.4

Elias Sunny to Taylor, no run

Abul Hasan to Utseya, 2 runs, Almost gets one at the end. In the air from Utseya as he tried to get the most out of this but it falls safely and there's just two.

Zimbabwe finish on 154 for 6. Hamilton Masakadza led the charge. He looked confident and in good form as he has in the warm-ups too.
