India in Zimbabwe ODI Series - 2nd ODI

Zimbabwe v India

India won by 58 runs

8.55am Liam Brickhill, Zimbabwe's biggest fan and a former Cricinfo man, is covering the game from Harare. Here's his first dispatch: "It's another cloudless morning in Harare. There's a very slight breeze just at the minute, and there are probably more crows circling the ground than there are punters in the stand right now."

Followed by: "The Zimbabwean quicks are warming up, but it's not clear yet who will share the new ball duties. I'd guess that Chatara will be first change, despite his decent performance the other day. Also on the field is Grant Flower, who's nicking slip catches to Taylor, Masakadza, Sibanda and Waller."

Hey everyone, Rohan here, I will be taking you through the first ten overs of this second ODI between Zimbabwe and India. Do write in with your thoughts and hopefully we will have a cracker of a match. Match to begin in just under three minutes.

Taylor is, of course, the only keeper in Zimbabwe's squad. He had this to say about keeping wicket yesterday: "I do enjoy it because it keeps me in the game and I get a good understanding of the wicket, which in turn will help me with my batting. A little bit more taxing on the legs, but it's fine. I feel more involved."

Aman SM: "Rohit Sharma is past his prime, should retire from his slot as the most promising talent and start delivering"

ravi: "Say a Big Hello to Liam for all of us here.."

Play is about to begin as Kyle Jarvis steams in. Rohit Sharma on strike

If you haven't already, do tune in to our Match Companion, manned by the incomparable Siddarth Ravindran

8.50am Suresh Kumar: "The only Rohit's innings that impressed me was in the first finals of the CB series in Aus 2008 where he along with Sachin steered India to first Tri series Final Win in AUS.."

Rajesh: "I think the best of Rohit is yet to come...He has repeat IPL perfomances where he demolished sides""

Rohit Sharma: "I've enjoyed opening the batting for India, it's challenging but I'm learning everyday. You know you will be facing two new balls, especially in conditions like this where the ball seams and swings, you have to be technically sound, and have to think about what shots to play."

Husky: "I would rate Rohit Sharma's 80 odd against Pakistan in the warm up match of 2009 WC as his bets inning ever."

Prateek Mittal: "@Vikrant: Rohit Sharma's best till now remains his performance in CB Series final along with SRT. With the kind of talent he has, it is sad that his best performance came too early in his career and we fear it is likely to remain so for sometime."

Toss Virat Kohli calls' heads', it is a tail, Zimbabwe to bowl. Taylor says he's pretty relieved to have won that. This should be a fun first hour. One change: Brian Vitori comes in for Mutombodzi.

Still waiting for the Indian XI.

Vikrant Singla: "Great.. Lets test the Indian batting order now.."

It's Rohit Sharma's 100th ODI today - is he finally beginning to deliver consistently six years after his debut. Which do you think has been his best ODI performance?

Kart: "I would love to see a Zim win as if they lose they will have to win all the next 3 games which is next to impossible."

Shashank: "I pretty much agree with Akash Chopra's article to include Rahane and Pujara in the XI and have a rotation policy. I will like Zimbabwe to make life tough for these batsmen and lets see if these batsmen have the temprament to excel in pressure situation. We ought to have a ready backup opener. Pujara is my favorite here."

No changes to the Indian XI.

8.30am It's another beautiful morning in Harare, Alistair Campbell says there's plenty of runs in the track, and says whoever win the toss will definitely bowl first.

8.15am Hello everyone, it's the second ODI between India and Zimbabwe in Harare. The toss is about 15 minutes away - all tosses these days seem to bebuilt up as "all-important" - but this one is actually going to be important. The balls curls around in the first hour after which it becomes a lot easier for batting - Zimbabwe will likely need to win the toss to make this game a close one.

Here's what Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor had to say about how crucial the flick of the coin will be: "Unfortunately it could boil down to the toss, but that's not to take anything away from the way the Indians outplayed us. I think they showed why they are one of the top teams in the world. But they made it extremely difficult for us in the morning and the wicket did flatten out in the afternoon which made it tough for our bowlers." Read the full quotes piece here, some interesting bits on Mishra's googly there.

And here's Cricinfo's preview to the game.

And the first comment of the day comes from Akki: "Though I am an Indian, I'd still like to see India loosing the toss and batting first. We should be able to score runs on any pitch against any attack if we have to justify our top ranking."

0.1

Jarvis to Sharma, no run, on a length outside off. Left alone by Rohit.

0.2

Jarvis to Sharma, 1 wide, rank delivery from Jarvis. This one is short and wide and immediately given as wide by the umpire. Jarvis still loosening up it seems.

Shajin S: "Rohit Sharma is just a glorified version of Murali Vijay."

0.3

Jarvis to Sharma, no run, beautiful delivery from Jarvis. Pitches outside off just short of a length. Draws in Rohit who ends up leaving it alone as he presents the bat. Just shaves past the edge

0.4

Jarvis to Sharma, no run, Good leave from Rohit. Pitched outside off stump, coming in a little bit so there is some movement off the pitch. Very tight delivery though. Tidy stuff from Jarvis

0.5

Jarvis to Sharma, no run, full and on off stump. Rohit gets forward to block it out

ishan Chokhawala: "Oh great! This gives Nohit Sharma even more of a opportunity to make this a thrilling test match."

Gururaj: "I think Rohit's best was his 60 odd against SA recently in CT-2013 opening game in cloudy conditions against Morkel and Tsosobe. That innings gave India the belief that they can bat well in early English conditions and Rohit a second life as an opener!"

0.6

Jarvis to Sharma, 1 run, short of a length just outside off stump. Rohit plays this to third man for a single

1.1

Vitori to Sharma, OUT, Got him first ball! Vitori pitches this full and just outside off stump. Rohit has a drive but ends up getting an edge which carries through to Vusi Sibanda at second slip. Rohit is out for 1. Let the No-hit comments begin.

Vishal Sheokand: "Come on India! Its like me playing PC games in easy levels. The fun is not winning, the fun is crushing the opponents hard!!!"

In steps the Indian captain. Can Virat Kohli repeat his heroics from the previous match?

1.2

Vitori to Kohli, 1 run, full and pitched on leg stump. Kohli happy to work this away with a clip through the leg side.

Anand Jain: "I don't understand the use of Rohit in ODIs..yes in testing conditions he is of some help but in subcontinent conditions where one needs to score quickly, i don't think he will fit there..what's say?"

1.3

Vitori to Dhawan, no run, full and wide outside off stump. Dhawan gets forward and tries to squeeze this through cover, but unable to get significant bat on it, and the ball goes harmlessly to the off siide

1.4

Vitori to Dhawan, no run, better length from Vitori. Fuller length outside off stump and Dhawan defends back to the bowler

Shamair: "We need Dhawan to twirl his moustache less and twirl his bat a bit more.."

2.2

Jarvis to Kohli, no run, wide delivery, pitched short of a length. Kohli decides to leave it alone

Jay Shah: "Not only Rohit, also Suresh Raina needs to step up now. With Rayadu, Pujara and Rahane on bench its going to be hard for Suresh to be in playing 11 with as a specialist bastman. There is no doubt about his electric fielding and unrated bowling. I think Raina should be sent # 4 regularly in this series so can score longer then 5 or 6 position. Plus when full team is available I doubt he would get chance to bat in 1-4 positions!"

2.3

Jarvis to Kohli, FOUR, pitched full and outside off stump. Kohli eases onto the front foot and plays an exquisite cover drive which beats the inner field. Great shot!

2.4

Jarvis to Kohli, no run, Ohh close one! This one pitches just on off stump and short of a length. Kohli defends on the back foot and induces an edge, which falls just short of first slip

3.4

Vitori to Kohli, no run, fuller length outside off and Kohli gets forward to defend to the off side

Parth Goyal: "More than anyone, it will be a very decisive match for DK. He hasnt performed well after those 2 centuries he hit in the Champions trophy warm up matches. If he fails to deliver today, i guess Pujara or Rahane would be given a chance in the next match.."

3.5

4.2

Jarvis to Dhawan, 1 no ball, And Dhawan is out! Almost a carbon copy of the last delivery as this is pitched just short of a length angling past the off stump. Dhawan again hangs his bat, but is unable to bring it back in as the ball hits the edge and carries to slip. But hold on, there is a twist in the tale as instant replay shows that Jarvis has overstepped, which may mean the decision will be reversed. Some deliberation from the third umpire. It has been confirmed. Jarvis has bowled a front foot no ball, which means not only do Zimbabwe lose out on the wicket, but have to sustain a free hit as well

4.2

Jarvis to Dhawan, 5 no balls, Jarvis pitches a yorker length delivery on leg stump, good idea but gets the line wrong, and even though Dhawan has a swipe to work it away to the leg side, but it ends up being called a no ball. What is Jarvis doing? Free hit once again

5.6

Ashish: "DK: He is one, who seems to do the harder thing easily but some how manages to fumble on the easier one."

6.2

Jarvis to Kohli, OUT, on a length on middle and off. Kohli tries to play through midwicket, and ends up spooning to Waller, who takes a catch. Kohli stands his ground and Malcolm Waller signals for a review from the umpire as it appears that the ball may have bounced before he took the catch. Just awaiting confirmation from the umpire. Hold on, it is out, and Kohli is walking back to the pavilion. It looked like it had not carried, but the umpires must have seen something that we didn't. Kohli is incensed as he walks back. This one will be talking point, that is certain.

Vitori is now getting some treatment from the Zimbabwe team physio.

What is going on with Zimbabwe's fielding today? There used to be a time when they were almost level with the South Africans when it came to their ground fielding and catching. Seems a far cry from the standards exhibited today.

Here's Vitori.

13.1

Vitori to Rayudu, 1 wide, starts the over with a leg-side wide

13.1

Vitori to Rayudu, no run, that was shortish and well outside off, Rayudu throws his bat at that and misses, was a hit-me ball

13.2

Vitori to Rayudu, OUT, Rayudu's struggles are over, his feet didn't move as he looks to lash a ball outside off through the cover, ends up giving a soft catch to the man at cover, he had looked in good touch in his debut innings, but was far less fluent today

miraj: "Pujara's stats speak for themselves: List A average of 57 (much better than most players in the team) Plus he hammered back-to-back hundreds in the 2012 Challenger Trophy, hitting 158 not out against India A and 124 not out against Bengal. In the final he added a half-century as he led India B to the title. And he was the highest scorer and had a tremendous strike rate! What more do you want from an ODI player?"

Suresh Raina is the new batsman, plenty of responsibility on him.

13.3

Vitori to Raina, 1 run, even Brian Vitori starts with a short ball to Raina, whose troubles against that are widely documented, Raina slugs that towards square leg

Vitori to Dhawan, no run, back of a length ball just outside off, tapped towards cover to end the over

Akki: "@Subhankar: Anchoring can be done by rotating the strike as well. I am sure no one is expecting a flurry of boundaries from Rayudu. Strike rotation has time and time again proved much more effective than boundaries. By scoring 4 odd runs off 24 balls, he is only creating pressure on himself and on the team."

49.2

Williams to Vinay Kumar, SIX, a full ball outside leg stump, Vinay backs away from the stumps and launches that over the bowler's head, for a moment it seemed that there would be another catch, but it is too straight for either long-on or long-off

49.3

Williams to Vinay Kumar, FOUR, another boundary for Vinay here, a length ball that is crashed to the deep extra cover boundary

49.4

Williams to Vinay Kumar, SIX, power, Vinay Kumar perhaps a trifle miffed at seeing Amit Mishra sent ahead of him in the batting order, charges out and hammers a brutal flat hit over long-off for six

49.5

Williams to Vinay Kumar, 1 run, skips down the track and taps it to the off side for a single

49.6

Williams to Mohammed Shami, SIX, the carnage continues as Mohammad Shami absolutely pounds that one, a length delivery that was in the slot, launched high by Shami and long enough to clear the long-on rope, so despite losing Jadeja on the first ball of the over, India pillage 23 off the over to reach a formidable 294

The over-rate from Zimbabwe is extremely poor, they finish about 28 minutes after the scheduled close - they'll get some extra minutes added for delays etc, but the team could be facing a hefty fine after the game. And Taylor gambled by giving Williams the final over though Vitori, who had such a good day, still had two overs remaining. That move didn't work, and India reach 294.

India hadn't looked like reaching anywhere close to this sort of target after their top order struggled against the Zimbabwe pacers. At 65 for 4, with Dhawan having had two lives, India were under immense pressure but they turned the innings around thanks to a 167-run stand between Dinesh Karthik and Dhawan. It was a more important innings for Karthik, who has had a lean run in recent matches. For Dhawan, it was business as usual, as he hit his third ODI hundred in two months.

Zimbabwe's bowlers did a terrific job first up, but were left down by the fielding and the sting was also taken out once the track began easing up towards the second half of the innings.

Zimbabwe are in trouble in this game and their neighbours South Africa are also wobbling in their game against Sri Lanka. you can catch commentary of that match here.

Sir Jadeja jokes may be getting stale but this one is pretty good. Gokul: ""Lord Jadeja" can make India score 23 in 5 balls by getting out!!"

Pradeep Sharma: "It's amazing today 4 Indian batman made their career best scores Dhawan, Mishra, Vinay Kumar and Mohd. Shami. Its a historic match."

Harsh Bansal: "Vinay Kumar's effort today reminded me of IPL match of RCBvsSRH. Vinay kumar scored like this in final over and then bowled superb last over to take RCB to Super Over. Though RCB lost thanks to Cameron White and Dale Steyn"

Jayanth: "Just loved Raina's expression as Vinay Kumar and Shami blasted 23 runs off last five balls. Reminds of the cricket we used to play during our good old college days."

Ketan: "In the last game, ZIM openers had the option of seeing off the new ball, as they were batting first. Lets see how they prevail today under the pressure of chasing at nearly 6 RPO."
