53.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Mawoyo, no run, defended outside off, wants the single, but Taibu sends it back. the general rule should be, if Taibu thinks he can't make it, there probably is no run. He is freakishly quick

53.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Mawoyo, 2 runs, comes down the track, right to the pitch of the ball, flicks it through midwicket

53.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Mawoyo, 2 leg byes, fired into the pads, doesn't get bat on the sweep, but will happily take two leg-byes

Ajmal is taken off after a marathon 19-over spell for three wickets. Here is Sohail Khan

54.1

Sohail Khan to Taibu, no run, starts off with one of the gentler bouncers you'll see in Test cricket. Easy to sway out of its way

54.3

Sohail Khan to Taibu, no run, short again, closer to off, punched towards cover

"Pakistan here is seriously missing Razzaq," says Shishank Dahiya. "He plays that third seamer's role so well and with him in the side Pakistan can squeeze in another spinner."

54.4

Sohail Khan to Taibu, no run, short of a length, Mawoyo wants another sharp single but this is going straight towards midwicket. Taibu yelps a NO, and Mawoyo dives back into the crease

That's tea at 2.41pm. Taibu and Mawayo have worked well after Ajmal threatened to run through Zimbabwe with his tricks. Trouble for Pakistan is, Ajmal is the only one to have created any impression, and this pitch is a motorway. Join us in 20 minutes

End of over 57 (maiden) Zimbabwe 162/3

    • TMK Mawoyo 54 (180b 5x4)
    • T Taibu 31 (43b 5x4)
    • Sohail Khan 10-5-29-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 4-0-14-0

Welcome back. Pakistan will want somebody other than Ajmal to create chances too. Zimbabwe will want this partnership to be a big one. Junaid Khan will resume after the break. Two staggered slips in place. Round the wicket

57.4

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, fuller, middle and off, slight shape back in, defended back to the bowler

57.5

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, driven on the up, crisply struck, can't get it past cover

57.6

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, goes for the full, swinging delivery, but bowls it well down the leg side

End of over 58 (maiden) Zimbabwe 162/3

    • T Taibu 31 (49b 5x4)
    • TMK Mawoyo 54 (180b 5x4)
    • Junaid Khan 14-8-29-0
    • Sohail Khan 10-5-29-0

Sohail will continue

58.1

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, 1 run, full, outside off, almost squeezes its way through a loose drive, but the inside edge evades the stumps by some distance

58.2

58.6

Sohail Khan to Taibu, no run, bouncer now, not too far outside off, Taibu has nothing to do with it

End of over 59 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 165/3

    • T Taibu 33 (54b 5x4)
    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (181b 5x4)
    • Sohail Khan 11-5-32-0

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, short of a length, outside off, punched back to Junaid

59.2

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, slightly fuller, close to off, Mawayo defends watchfully

59.3

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, appeal for an lbw, goes wide of the crease, beats him with the angle, catches Mawayo on the crease, in front of middle, not a long distance for the ball to travel. The only thing that could have saved here is an inside edge, but that replay didn't conclusively show an edge

59.4

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, more angle into middle and leg, defended towards midwicket now

59.5

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, pushes forward after that slip last ball, and outside the line of off. Defends

59.6

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, bouncer, pretty sharp, effort ball, you could hear the grunt. But the line is well outside off, and he doesn't have to play at it, or get out of its way

End of over 60 (maiden) Zimbabwe 165/3

    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (187b 5x4)
    • T Taibu 33 (54b 5x4)
    • Junaid Khan 15-9-29-0
    • Sohail Khan 11-5-32-0
60.1

Sohail Khan to Taibu, no run, punched on the up, can't beat cover-point, and shouts "waiting, waiting"

60.2

Sohail Khan to Taibu, 1 run, length ball, around off, but this time he closes the face late to get a single to square leg

Tariq strikes again: "If they were considering to give chance to an aged fast bowler.. I think Waqar Younis would have been better choice than Aizaz Cheema...." I'd say Sohail has been more uninspiring than Cheema. No pace, just putting it there. Let's also not forget that this pitch is an absolute motorway

60.3

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, short of a length, middle and off, worked to midwicket

60.4

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, looks for the late-cut, can't place it past gully

60.5

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, the loose shot! Looks to upper-cut this, but doesn't quite get under it. Goes uppishly towards backward point, but falls well in front

60.6

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, length ball outside off, leans into the drive, plays it crisply, can't beat cover

End of over 61 (1 run) Zimbabwe 166/3

    • T Taibu 34 (56b 5x4)

61.2

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, fuller, closer to off, pushed with an open face towards cover

61.3

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, length ball, middle and leg, comes forward and defends

"a motorway which turns - sharply on occasion, by your own commentary. Anyway, there's a second innings to come at some point. Is it as flat as the one PK played SA on in the UAE? I'm at work atm and not watching - just reading!!" Luke, yes Ajmal has found turn, but not bounce. And for the seam bowlers, there has been zero deviation or uncomfortable bounce. Even Ajmal has been able to trouble them because they haven't read the doosra. Taibu read them from the hand, and has hardly looked in any trouble

61.4

Junaid Khan to Taibu, 2 runs, defends off the front foot, gets an inside edge into the pad for a single

61.5

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, back of a length, middle and leg, hits him on the thigh

61.6

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, slower ball, full on the pads, turned to square leg

End of over 62 (4 runs) Zimbabwe 170/3

    • T Taibu 38 (62b 5x4)
    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (191b 5x4)
    • Junaid Khan 16-9-33-0
    • Sohail Khan 12-5-33-0

"In Sohail Khan's wicket less Debut test Match.. Playing 1st Sri Lanka Scored 644 Runs , Pakistan Replied with 765 Runs...After 2 years He gets another chance....From one Motorway to another..." Tariq sums up the story of Sohail Khan's life

62.1

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, length ball, wide outside off, left alone

"Feel absolutely gutted for Junaid Khan. Has been the pick of the seamers but is playing on the flattest of decks, doesn't even get the new ball, has a catch dropped, and a legitimate LBW shout turned down." Imran sums up Junaid's day

62.2

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, short of a length, right behind it to defend it to off

62.3

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, back of a length, straight, stays back, plays this back to the bowler

Just one slip and gully now

62.4

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, full, overpitched, nicely driven back, Sohail fields in his follow-through

Short midwicket is in

62.5

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, closes the face on this, looks for a single, but decides against it because it is hit straight to square leg

62.6

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, length ball, plays with an open face, towards point

End of over 63 (maiden) Zimbabwe 170/3

    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (197b 5x4)
    • T Taibu 38 (62b 5x4)
    • Sohail Khan 13-6-33-0
    • Junaid Khan 16-9-33-0
63.1

Junaid Khan to Taibu, FOUR, short and wide, Taibu pounces on it, cuts it in front of backward point. Junaid seems to be tiring down

63.2

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, appeal for a catch down the leg side, but that's just to clear throats a bit

63.3

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, full on the pads, nicely driven, short midwicket makes a diving save to his left

63.4

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, length ball, leg line, defended towards short midwicket

Goes back round the stumps

63.5

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, overpitched outside off, driven towards mid-off. More power, less timing

"@Tariq - You may recall an interview by Mohammad Sami few years back in which he blamed PCB of selectively sending some players to bowl on placid pitches and in turn lablelled them inefficient. Throughout his career he has bowled on flat tracks. Can you imagine with Sami's pace on an English track?" Jawwad, I always love conspiracy theories

63.6

Junaid Khan to Taibu, no run, punched with an open face, can't beat gully

End of over 64 (4 runs) Zimbabwe 174/3

    • T Taibu 42 (68b 6x4)
    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (197b 5x4)
    • Junaid Khan 17-9-37-0
    • Sohail Khan 13-6-33-0

"damn...I was looking forwad to this Test too. Are we expecting a draw then even at this early stage?" Luke, Zimbabwe can collapse against spin, Pakistan aren't incapable of collapsing inexplicably either. Apart from that, I'd say this is a draw. Speaking of spin, here's Ajmal, to bowl round the stumps

64.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, tossed up outside off, pushed to mid-off

64.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, offbreak now, pitched outside off, turning in, defended

64.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, quicker, flatter, defended off the back foot

64.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, low trajectory again, stays on the crease to block this

64.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, not reading the doosra at all, this is pitched outside leg, he looks for the easy single, the ball turns away, takes the thick edge, and lobs towards the vacant silly point area

64.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, flatter, quicker, pushed back to the bowler

End of over 65 (maiden) Zimbabwe 174/3

    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (203b 5x4)
    • T Taibu 42 (68b 6x4)
    • Saeed Ajmal 20-5-49-3
    • Junaid Khan 17-9-37-0

"No Jawwad is right. Thought there was something fishy about Wahab Riaz's non-selection" Gav adds to the conspiracy theory. I like the thought of Riaz being considered senior enough to be given the choice of pulling out of a flat-track Test. Sohail meanwhile gets a change of ends

65.1

Sohail Khan to Taibu, 2 runs, Lovely shot, short of a length, slightly wide, punched on the up, away from the body, no deviation, places it between mid-off and extra cover

65.2

Sohail Khan to Taibu, OUT, Sohail gets his first Test wicket, gift-wrapped by a dangerous-looking Taibu. This is short, this is wide, Taibu goes hard at it. All he manages is a thin edge through to the keeper. Sohail exults, Taibu walks back

T Taibu c †Adnan Akmal b Sohail Khan 44 (102m 70b 6x4 0x6) SR: 62.85

Craig Ervine is the new batsman

65.3

Sohail Khan to Ervine, no run, and he nearly gets out in a bizarre manner... it's a gift delivery on the pads, he misses, the ball hits the edge of the thigh pad, and rolls dangerously towards the stumps. Safe, though

65.4

Sohail Khan to Ervine, 1 run, closes the face on this short-of-a-length delivery to get a single square on the on side

65.5

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, length ball, angling in towards off, dead-batted

65.6

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, short and wide again, and Mawayo nearly commits the same mistake as Taibu. Goes for the belated cut shot away from the body, makes no contact

End of over 66 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 177/4

    • TMK Mawoyo 55 (205b 5x4)
    • CR Ervine 1 (2b)
    • Sohail Khan 14-6-36-1
    • Saeed Ajmal 20-5-49-3

James: "To be fair to Jawwad, conspiracy theories tend to be more plausible if the PCB is involved! However, I think Sami has bowled in tests in England, largely unsuccessfully. He has the pace, but not the accuracy to go with it."

66.1

Saeed Ajmal to Ervine, 1 run, full toss outside leg, Ervine takes a single to long leg

"I can write an essay on how much Sohail Khan did not deserve that wicket, especially after dropping a sitter earlier in the day." Imran hasn't warmed up to the idea of Sohail Khan

66.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, overspinner, Mawayo goes deep in the crease, and defends

66.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, FOUR, stuck in the first gear for a long time, Mawayo hits top gear... gets under this length ball, an offbreak, and lofts it over mid-on. Clean strike, one bounce for four

66.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, he is still not picking the doosra, this one beats the edge outside off again

66.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, the straighter one, pitched outside leg, squares up a touch to defend this

66.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, 1 run, offbreak down the leg side, easily helped around the corner for one

End of over 67 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 183/4

    • TMK Mawoyo 60 (210b 6x4)
    • CR Ervine 2 (3b)
    • Saeed Ajmal 21-5-55-3
    • Sohail Khan 14-6-36-1
67.1

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, moves across to this short and wide delivery, thus getting close to its line, cuts it along the ground, can't beat point, though

67.2

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, length ball, around off, defended from the crease

67.3

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, no run, this one holds its line outside off, defended off the back foot

67.4

Sohail Khan to Mawoyo, 1 run, short and wide, we now have a deep point who will keep this cut down to one

Speed gun: "is tinoboy a solid batting hand or what. the best opening partnership i have seen for zimbo post "the rebels" era. vusiboy and tinoboy are amarvel to watch"

67.5

Sohail Khan to Ervine, no run, back of a length, middle and off, defended back to the bowler

"We are at a stage where we are discussing which of the Pakistani Fast Bowlers is worst...it used to be Opposite for decades... I am Sad i had to see this day...." Tariq, hanky panky stuff aside, we could have still had Asif, Amir, Gul. That's some attack

67.6

Sohail Khan to Ervine, no run, length ball, on the pads, finds midwicket

End of over 68 (1 run) Zimbabwe 184/4

    • CR Ervine 2 (5b)

68.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, doosra, a touch too short, he has time to adjust, and pushes this back to Ajmal

68.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, plays the late-cut to this, with two slips in presence, but right into the ground

68.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, flighted offbreak, defended off the front foot

68.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, FOUR, fired in, a pretty quick offbreak, on the pads, he gets enough bat on it to beat the keeper

68.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, short, off and middle, turning in, punched to midwicket

68.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, doosra again, draws him forward, gets the edge, but it is a soft edge that doesn't carry to second slip

    • CR Ervine 2 (5b)

"@Imran, oh you should you should! I'd love something to read while Misbah bats for his fifty on day 2, 3, and 4." Graeme, that will make for some commentating. Meanwhile, Cheema comes back

69.1

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, short of a length, angling across, pushed to cover

69.2

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, action replay of the previous delivery

69.3

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, full and wide, angling across, left alone

"Having been a bit harsh on him earlier on in the 2nd session, I now have to acknowledge that his steady pace is what's keeping Zimbabwe in this game... Stable base for some to quickly score 40something and ensuring that it's not a train-smash when others go out for less than 10... Keep it up Mawoyo!!!" Luigi fesses up

69.4

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, angled across him again, Ervine is not playing at those

"as you commiserate over fast bowlers, is Mawoyo growing in confidence?" Ye he is, Andrew, but he is still struggling to pick the doosra

69.5

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, short, angled across, Ervine keeps his bat inside the line

69.6

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, slower ball, loopy, really slow, about half his original pace, beats the bat outside off

"I'm liking this tino too - bit of a duffer Terence about his SR but I'm not liking the thought of watching a test where the best chance of a result is a team imploding in on itself. Still, i guess there'd be something for Zim to take away if they don't ... that's for Andrew btw whom i'm still narked at! :0" Interesting that Andrew and Luke have emailed at the exact same moment

70.1

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, flighted around middle and leg, defended

70.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, defended around the front pad again

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, doosra, reads it off the pitch, and because it is a touch short, he has time to recover and defend it to cover. Ajmal smiles

70.4

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, stays back in the crease to defend

70.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, flighted outside off, pushed to cover

70.6

"This attack is obviously weak without the "A's" and Gul however do not underate Junaid, he has done wonders at Lancashire this year. Junaid has the ability to develop into a great bowler." Kam, I agree that before criticising these bowlers, we have to keep in mind this pitch has nothing in it for them. And yes, Junaid has been the pick of the three. Time for a drink now

71.1

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, FOUR, I'd like some of what Ervine drank during the break. Short of a length, not much room, but he stands tall and punches this between cover and mid-off

"Tino's hieghest score is 65* but average is 71. Nice stats." Good spot, Muzammil

71.2

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, angled across, well wide, left alone

Jawwad: "There is another Aamir in the country and his name is Anwar Ali. You may want to Youtube "Anwar Ali Superior Bowling". Not sure why he wasn't picked than aging Sohail or Cheema. Yes, Sami did play in England and might not have done well as it was early in his career but as he neared his prime he never got the chance. You remember how he rattled Australia in that Sydney fiasco?"

71.3

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, angled across, again wide enough to not play at it

"Loving Mawoyo's batting... Every team needs a plodder. Glad the test is on - im sitting at work in Australia & this is keeping me awake :)" Stephen, that's late to be working in Australia! Unless you are a cricket commentator/writer, a breed sad enough to work at any imaginable hour of the day

71.4

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, 1 no ball, oversteps on this one, Ervine looks to defend a length ball, gets a soft edge that falls well short of slip

"While I write the essay on Sohail, I'm starting to wonder whether Mawoyo fully understands the repercussions of his innings. Misbah will make sure he has Mawoyo and co toil for twice as long in the field." James, does nobody like Misbah?

71.4

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, length ball, middle and leg, angling towards off, defended towards point

"I wonder if Andrew is writing from El Salvador? Few people can get me so quickly riled when talking about cricket as my brother..." I am sure this Luke is not the earlier Luke

71.5

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, left alone outside off

"Why won't the bank clear my cheque?! Not your problem, you might say, but I'd feel a lot happier watching commentary if I had a positive balance..." Hugh, you still use cheques? By the way, I just got a text from my bank... Well, not your problem, you might say

71.6

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, straighter now, making him play, which he does with a dead bat

72.2

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, presses forward to defend this to short leg

72.3

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, 1 run, slightly short, goes back, punches this square on the on side for one

72.4

Saeed Ajmal to Ervine, no run, the doosra, the doosra... Ervine doesn't read it. Flighted outside off, he goes for the big drive, playing of course for an offbreak, this one then squeezes through the gap between bat and pad. Doesn't hit the stumps

72.5

Saeed Ajmal to Ervine, no run, left alone dangerously outside off, this one goes with the arm, would have hit the sixth stump... Akmal is excited

72.6

Saeed Ajmal to Ervine, 1 leg bye, bat-pad, a quicker, sharper delivery, the inside edge hits the pad, and then lobs the forward short leg

End of over 73 (2 runs) Zimbabwe 195/4

73.1

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, short of a length, punched with an open face, can't beat cover

"all the 'luke's' you've published in this commentary have been me - as i said I'm at work and my personality changes almost directly in line with the competency of my staff...today, you may have seen more than one luke }8/" Luke who is there?

73.2

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, FOUR, soft hands keep this edge down... angled across him, Ervine leaves the bat hanging, takes the outside half of the bat, the b=face opens a touch too, and he gets four between slips and gully

73.3

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, no run, better now as he leaves this alone outside off

"The 72nd over had a comment interspersed between every delivery. A cricinfo record :-). Either the bowlers are taking long time between deliveries or this is what we call the Mawoyo effect." Ravi, some credit this way too please

73.4

Aizaz Cheema to Ervine, 1 leg bye, worked off the pads for a single

73.5

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, (no ball) FOUR, high full toss, apologises to the batsman right way, who is not apologetic even a wee bit in throwing his bat at it and guiding it between slip and gully

73.5

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, no run, full outside off, driven to mid-off

73.6

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, no run, cuts this away softly, can get it only as far as point

"Congrats on a record Sid! To be fair, the cricket is "gritty" rather than exciting. Wonder if the match referee has resorted to beer yet?" James, do we have to keep going back to Boonie and his beers? I have heard he himself doesn't like to talk about it at all

75.1

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, no run, yorker outside off, digs it out safely

75.2

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, FOUR, slower ball gone horribly wrong, loopy, juicy full toss on the pads, Mawayo - after having wanted to duck under it - decides to make full use of it, lofting it square on the on side

75.3

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, no run, length ball around off, back to defence

75.4

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, no run, angling in towards off, defended from the crease

75.5

Aizaz Cheema to Mawoyo, no run, he is half-forward to block this length ball outside off

"There may be only one Luke, but there's more than one James on here! Wasn't me complaining about Misbah's batting (yet!)." Point noted James. However, I don't think people would like it if I started giving out their email addresses to tell between the Jameses or the Lukes. Oh wait, there is only one Luke. Ajmal is back over the stumps

"Tino has faced almost 40 overs on day one." Huge, Phil. Here is Hafeez. Round the stumps

77.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Ervine, 2 runs, a low full toss, and he plays a clever little paddle sweep around the corner

"Sid, would I comment on Boonie and beer? I see Boon had a stand named after him, though. Wonder if it's fallen over yet?" No comments, James. Don't want the match referee to dock me my match fee, which anyway is pretty meagre, as opposed to cricketers who swear or show dissent against umpiring calls

Mohammad Hafeez to Ervine, no run, flat outside off, pushed to silly point

77.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Ervine, no run, full, into the pads, finds midwicket

77.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Mawoyo, no run, Bat-pad, but in front of short leg... teasingly it stayed in the air for a considerable amount of time, and frustratingly for Pakistan, it was wide of the man

End of over 78 (3 runs) Zimbabwe 219/4

"People should look at the quality of the runs as well as the rate for Mawoyo vs Ajmal 40 runs off 82 balls at s/r of 48.7... rest of Zim 27 for 3 of 76 balls at s/r of 35.5...." The Auditor lives up to his screen name

78.1

Saeed Ajmal to Ervine, no run, full offbreak, defended back to Ajmal

78.2

Saeed Ajmal to Ervine, FOUR, fired into the pads, with no fine leg in place... asking for a boundary. Ervine guides this past the leg slip, and watches it go for four

"I don't know why but each and every comment about Mawoyo's Innings ( or his strike rate ? ) reminds me of Asif Mujtaba's 55 of 220 balls in England in 1996." That must have been something, Anees

78.3

Interesting. The new ball has been taken, but Hafeez will continue with it. He has opened a Test innings previously, mind you. A slip, a leg slip, a silly point

"There have been more overs bowled by Pakistan than runs scored by Mawoyo.." Muhammad M Khan, as a batsman I have always aspired to inflict similar punishment on the bowlers. Here is Sohail Khan

85.1

Sohail Khan to Ervine, no run, shortish, stays low, pushes this to cover

Sohail Khan to Ervine, no run, short of a length, around off again, punched square, can't find the gap

"@but can use the next half hour to make sure the allocation of 90 overs is bowled

Do you get paid(extra) for working over time?" Sadly not, Phil. That's why I like it when the bowlers are fined for slow over-rates. Meanwhile Junaid goes round the stumps

Junaid Khan to Mawoyo, no run, short of a length, angling in, still just as solid in defence

86.4

88.1

Junaid Khan to Ervine, no run, beaten at the fag end of the day... went wide of the crease, which made Ervine play at this outside off, but this one doesn't go with the angle, holding its line. Doesn't take the edge, though

88.2

Junaid Khan to Ervine, no run, and again, he goes wide again, makes him play outside off again, but it straightens and beats the edge. Junaid lets out a grunt

88.3

89.2

Three close men in, another extra man in cover

89.5

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, moves across, and forward, and smothers the turn

89.6

Saeed Ajmal to Mawoyo, no run, doosra, Mawoyo doesn't read it from the hand, but from the pitch, and defends

So that's stumps. Good temperament from Mawoyo who has batted 273 deliveries for his 82. That's more than half the allocation of 90 overs today. Mawoyo saw his mates throw away good starts, but he himself went on, waiting for the rank bad balls to put away. As Suwarna puts it, "Mawoyo faced the first ball and the last ball of the day."

Pakistan confounded by choosing to bowl first on a flat track, and only Ajmal looked like a genuine threat. He took three wickets and it was hard work for the seamers, two of whom were debuting, and one was playing his second Test. Pakistan will feel they have at least managed some control, Zimbabwe will want to make sure their lower order doesn't collapse, as it did against Bangladesh.

Luke has a last message for the day: "what!!!? you're paid for this!! I mean you do a great 'job' an' all but paid?? I remember in my day..." Cut me a break, Luke. Hopefully my boss is not reading this. On that appreciatory note, this is Sidharth Monga saying goodbye. Do join us for day two
