Pakistan in Zimbabwe ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Zimbabwe v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 28 runs

The players make their way out to the centre. I am already looking forward to the leggie Yasir Shah having a go, but that will be much later in the piece. Farhat and Hafeez take guard. Vitori has the ball. One slip in place. Ian Gould says play.

Kepler Wessels expects the pitch to behave similarly to the one we had in the second game. Some grass on the track, and there might be assistance early on. David Boon is once again the match referee. I know some of you find that very amusing.

Raza chips in: "The selection is mind-boggling to say the least. Pakistan has had opening problems for ages now and Imran Farhat has been a center-piece in that problem. It was a high time to try out Ramiz Raja Jr to see if he can form a good solid pair with Hafeez who is (finally) doing very well now."

Yousuf doesn't seem too happy with the picks for today's game. "Is there anyone to tell PCB selectors that giving chance to youngsters mean trying Ahmed Shahzad, Hammad Azam, Sarfraz Ahmad (wk) or Shahzaib Hasan. Youngsters in no dictionary of world mean 29+ years chaps," he says. I'm surprised Shahzad is not in the side. He was pretty good in the West Indies wasn't he? Shahzaib Hasan is a bit of a slogger though. Not the most technically sound batsman doing the rounds. Also surprising to see that Rameez Raja isn't getting a game. Of course, I am talking of the younger version.

9.00 am Hello folks! Welcome to our coverage for the final ODI. Zimbabwe have won the toss and elected to bowl. And this time, that's what Brendan Taylor actually wants to do. I think.

With the series in the bag, Pakistan have rung in the changes. Umar Akmal, Junaid Khan and Saeed Ajmal will sit out; in come Asad Shafiq, Sohail Khan and Yasir Shah (on debut). Zimbabwe have benched Chris Mpofu, and Kyle Jarvis gets a game.

Will Misbah-ul-Haq finally get an ODI ton today? The List discusses a select band of cricketers who have done quite well for themselves without ever getting to three-figures.

0.1

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, gets the first ball to straighten gently into Hafeez who defends solidly from the crease.

There's a catcher at short midwicket.

0.2

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 wide, big swing. Uncontrolled from Vitori though, and it swerves down the leg side after landing on middle and leg.

0.2

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, short midwicket nearly in business! Viroti again gets the ball to duck into Hafeez who falls over as he flicks and the ball goes uppishly. Just past the catcher.

0.3

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 leg bye, whoa, big deviation again. Vitori gets it to angle across towards middle and then dart in and cramp Hafeez as it hits the pad. Surely going down the leg side, and they pinch the leg bye.

0.4

Vitori to Imran Farhat, FOUR, elegant from Farhat, not so elegant from Waller running across from third man. Width outside off, Farhat sets himself up nicely and square drives. Waller runs across and puts in the slide, but can't stop it cleanly.

Two slips in place for the left-hander.

0.5

Vitori to Imran Farhat, no run, shorter length, the ball carries through nicely as Farhat moves the bat away from the line.

0.6

Vitori to Imran Farhat, 1 run, Farhat taps the last ball towards midwicket for a single. Not the best of starts for Vitori this.

End of over 1 (11 runs) Pakistan 11/0 (RR: 11.00)
Imran Farhat    5* (3b 1x4)      BV Vitori    1-0-10-0
Mohammad Hafeez    4* (3b 1x4)

Jarvis will bowl the second over. One slip and short cover in place. Over the stumps.

1.1

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, whanged in back of a length and it angles across. Farhat stays in the crease and defends to the off side.

1.2

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, Farhat looks to nudge to the leg side and scoot across, but Jarvis is onto the ball real quick. Hafeez denies the single and Farhat scrambles back in. Jarvis' under-arm throw missed in any case.

1.3

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, FOUR, he doesn't seem to have too many fans among our readers, but Farhat is looking good so far. Over-pitched outside off, he picked up the length in a trice, reached out to the pitch and drove it sumptuously through the covers.

1.4

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, 1 run, on the pads this time, Farhat whips it down to fine leg for one more. Zimbabwe are all over the place in these first 2 overs.

Two slips for Hafeez.

1.5

Jarvis to Mohammad Hafeez, 3 runs, you can place as many slips as you want, but it won't help if you bowl short and wide. Hafeez is in too good form to let it go, and eases it in front of point for three more.

1.6

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, pitched up on off, Farhat shuffles into line and check drives to mid-off.

End of over 2 (8 runs) Pakistan 19/0 (RR: 9.50)
Imran Farhat    10* (8b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    1-0-8-0
Mohammad Hafeez    7* (4b 1x4)      BV Vitori    1-0-10-0

Slip and a short fine leg now. The catchers are moving all over the place too.

2.1

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, very poor from Vitori. Another one angles in tamely onto the hips and Hafeez glances it down to fine leg, well to the right of the catcher, and it is four more.

2.2

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, here comes the over-compensation. Short and wide outside off, Hafeez seems to be enjoying himself. Almost like he's having a net. He scythes this up and over point for four more.

2.3

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 wide, wide down the leg side now. Anyone with a radar around Harare? Your team needs one right now.

2.3

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, could almost see it coming. Short, wide outside off. Hafeez guides the cut with more finesse than this time, backward of point for another boundary.

If I were Brendan Taylor, I'd be wondering if I've made the wrong call two tosses on the trot.

Round the wicket now.

2.4

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, goes very wide of the crease in an effort to cut the angle. Hafeez waits for the ball to come on to his pads and clips through square leg for two more.

2.5

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, back of a length on off stump. Arguably the first good ball of the over. Hafeez defends to short midwicket.

2.6

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, back of a length again, Hafeez stays back and works it towards midwicket.

End of over 3 (15 runs) Pakistan 34/0 (RR: 11.33)
Mohammad Hafeez    21* (10b 4x4)      BV Vitori    2-0-25-0
Imran Farhat    10* (8b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    1-0-8-0

3.1

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, Jarvis angles another one across Farhat who defends into the off side.

3.2

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, effort ball from Jarvis, and a good line too. Just outside off, that whizzed off the turf past Farhat who was clearly late on a cramped cut. He doesn't connect.

3.3

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, on a length around off stump, Farhat defends to cover. Three dot-balls on the trot - a minor win for Zim.

3.4

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, make that four. Fuller length outside off, Farhat moves nicely into position but his drive finds mid-off.

3.5

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, still can't get it away. Perfect length from Jarvis, Farhat forces it into the covers.

3.6

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, 2 runs, finishes the over with a poor ball, on the pads, and Farhat whips it to a sloppy fine-leg fielder who concedes the second. Still, a pretty good over that from KJ.

End of over 4 (2 runs) Pakistan 36/0 (RR: 9.00)
Imran Farhat    12* (14b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    2-0-10-0
Mohammad Hafeez    21* (10b 4x4)      BV Vitori    2-0-25-0

4.1

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Vitori again wafts it in from wide of the crease, Hafeez defends from the crease. He likes to drive and cut, so this is the perfect line and length if you are bowling at Hafeez.

4.2

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, once again, late slant into Hafeez who plays watchfully from the crease.

4.3

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, cramps him again, Hafeez is stuck on the crease as he looks to work it around, but it beats the bat to hit the pad.

Ten dot balls in the last 11. Good comeback this from Zim after the clattering they endured early on.

4.4

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, fuller length, but he's again snaking it in sharply into Hafeez, who presses forward to defend.

4.5

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, Hafeez is getting nothing to hit in this over. He hangs back and defends another back of length ball coming into him.

4.6

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, goes much wider outside off to end the over, and Hafeez shoulders arms. Maiden to Vitori.

End of over 5 (maiden) Pakistan 36/0 (RR: 7.20)
Mohammad Hafeez    21* (16b 4x4)      BV Vitori    3-1-25-0
Imran Farhat    12* (14b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    2-0-10-0

5.1

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, FOUR, here comes the release. Jarvis experiments with a fuller ball, probably looking for late inward movement, but this was far too wide. Farhat just laid into it and crunched it uppishly through point.

5.2

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, shorter, faster and straighter. The result - Farhat is caught on the crease, beaten by the pace and movement. He's hit on the pad, but it was heading down the leg side.

5.3

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, 1 run, too straight this time, and Farhat quietly nudges through square leg for one.

Waseem: "Two good overs now, a wicket around the corner?"

5.4

Jarvis to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, short ball shaping away outside off. Hafeez lets it go.

Asad: "The zimbabwe attack sounds a bit "New Zealandish"... isn't it?" What ever that means!

5.5

Jarvis to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, back of a length again around off stump, and Hafeez blocks from the crease.

5.6

Jarvis to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 no ball, he's over-stepped now. First foot-fault of the series this, and well - on replays that seems like a harsh call. Fuller length, just outside off, and Hafeez inner edges it towards the keeper.

Free-hit time ...

5.6

Jarvis to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, full and wide outside off, Hafeez redirects it backward of point and it is headed for the boundary until a flying Masakadza intervenes after charging across from third man.

End of over 6 (8 runs) Pakistan 44/0 (RR: 7.33)
Mohammad Hafeez    23* (20b 4x4)      KM Jarvis    3-0-18-0
Imran Farhat    17* (17b 3x4)      BV Vitori    3-1-25-0

6.1

Vitori to Imran Farhat, no run, he's giving Farhat more room than he should. This time, Farhat times the cover drive ominously, but finds the fielder in the circle.

6.2

Vitori to Imran Farhat, no run, not so well-timed this time, forced off the front foot into the covers.

Usman: "i think Asad was focusing on the names VITORI and KYLE." Ah, now I get it.

6.3

Vitori to Imran Farhat, no run, Farhat hangs back in the crease and steers towards point cautiously.

6.4

Vitori to Imran Farhat, 1 run, he gets the single this time, staying back in the crease and opening the face to guide it backward of point.

6.5

Vitori to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, the radar is not with Zimbabwe, it is with Pakistan! Short from Vitori, angling into the batsman, and Hafeez responds with an imperious pull. It seemed set to sail towards the midwicket boundary, but hang on.. There was a man at deep midwicket. And Hafeez could not have picked him out more accurately if he had tried to.

Mohammad Hafeez c Waller b Vitori 23 (36m 21b 4x4 0x6) SR: 109.52

Vitori is delivering the ball from outrageously wide of the crease. Must be very close to being called for cutting the side-crease.

6.6

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, 1 wide, big movement down the leg side, and exemplary keeping from Taibu to go all horizontal and snap it up before it flew away for five wides.

6.6

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, no run, full length to end the over, Shafiq gets forward to defend.

End of over 7 (2 runs) Pakistan 46/1 (RR: 6.57)
Asad Shafiq    0* (1b)      BV Vitori    4-1-27-1
Imran Farhat    18* (21b 3x4)      KM Jarvis    3-0-18-0

7.1

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, lovely ball from Jarvis, he gets it to dart away from back of a length and Farhat is caught feeling for it from the crease.

7.2

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, and again, beaten comprehensively. Farhat played a confident-looking off-drive, but he completely failed to spot the away movement and played it inside the line.

7.3

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, FOUR, ah, Jarvis goes too full this time. Farhat loves it when he doesn't have movement to contend with, and this one was full enough to allow him the freedom of driving sumptuously into the covers.

7.4

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, Jarvis pulls it back now, and promptly beats him with the nagging away movement. Good reason to bring in a second slip, I'd say. Farhat flashes away loosely and misses again.

7.5

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, FOUR, you won't see too many pulls going through mid-off! Short and pacy from Jarvis, Farhat picked the length late and forced the fore-hand from well outside off between the bowler and mid-off.

7.6

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, back of a length and on the stumps to end the over. Farhat defends towards mid-on.

End of over 8 (8 runs) Pakistan 54/1 (RR: 6.75)
Imran Farhat    26* (27b 5x4)      KM Jarvis    4-0-26-0
Asad Shafiq    0* (1b)      BV Vitori    4-1-27-1

8.1

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, no run, Vitori delivers another one from wide of the crease, he's almost releasing the ball from silly mid-off. Shafiq tries to work it with the angle to the leg side.

8.2

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, no run, short of a length outside off and good carry towards Shafiq who reaches out to meet it.

8.3

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, 1 no ball, another foot-fault, this time from Vitori. It is for cutting the bowling crease, not the side lines.

Free-hit coming up for the second time today.

8.3

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, got to love a free-hit! Shafiq doesn't have a care in the world as he opens up the leg side, exposing his stumps, and mows a full ball through midwicket.

8.4

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, uppish but safe. Vitori again gets late movement into the right-hander, and Shafiq's flick goes in the air to the left of short midwicket. It was timed well enough to scurry away to the boundary.

8.5

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, no run, shortens the length this time, and it finishes on middle and leg. Shafiq works it to the leg side.

Sami: "While I can't see it on TV, but that straightish pull reminded me of those Abdul Razzaq pulls he was so good at late in the innings. Wham bam down the track between long on and long off!" Hah! Razzaq's batting had a grammar of its own. No footwork, he just used to move the front leg away and swing. Would have been a baseball star if he had tried that sport.

8.6

Vitori to Asad Shafiq, no run, Shafiq defends a length ball from the crease down the track.

End of over 9 (9 runs) Pakistan 63/1 (RR: 7.00)
Asad Shafiq    8* (8b 2x4)      BV Vitori    5-1-36-1
Imran Farhat    26* (27b 5x4)      KM Jarvis    4-0-26-0

9.1

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, Jarvis dangles another one on Farhat's pads and he looks to turn the strike with a clip to the leg side. Can't beat the fielder this time.

9.2

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, angled across the stumps, Farhat is behind the line as he defends.

9.3

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, fuller length and straightening into Farhat who times the off-drive well, but finds mid-off.

9.4

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, 1 run, inevitably a ball is bowled wide of the off stump and Farhat punishes it through point. There is protection in the deep.

9.5

Jarvis to Asad Shafiq, no run, draws Shafiq forward with a full length, he defends quietly down the track.

9.6

Jarvis to Asad Shafiq, no run, the ball is still moving. This one darts away from outside off stump, and Shafiq shoulders arms.

End of over 10 (1 run) Pakistan 64/1 (RR: 6.40)
Asad Shafiq    8* (10b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    5-0-27-0
Imran Farhat    27* (31b 5x4)      BV Vitori    5-1-36-1

Bowling Powerplay taken straight away. Chigumbura comes on for a trundle.

10.1

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, on the pads, Farhat works it to the leg side without timing.

Sami: "Talking of baseball, I heard the Americans were after the likes of Gilchrist and Sehwag to play for them. Who did they pick from Pakistan? Inzimam! Not only do they stay hit when he hits, he can throw the ball like a bullet and apparently they wanted him as a pitcher! Not sure what happened then... or whether I dreamt all of this up!" The last sentence is the most important one in this comment.

10.2

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, jaffa. Farhat is squared up by seamwork that leaves him even as the ball bounces big. Nice work from Elton, that ball.

10.3

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, 1 run, width outside off, Farhat indulges himself with the cut and gets a single past point.

10.4

Chigumbura to Asad Shafiq, no run, Shafiq shoulders arms as Elton lands one well wide of off stump.

10.5

Chigumbura to Asad Shafiq, no run, fuller length outside off, Shafiq eases into the drive but finds cover.

10.6

Chigumbura to Asad Shafiq, no run, goes wide of the crease to end the over, and Shafiq doesn't poke at it.

End of over 11 (1 run) Pakistan 65/1 (RR: 5.90)
Asad Shafiq    8* (13b 2x4)      E Chigumbura    1-0-1-0
Imran Farhat    28* (34b 5x4)      KM Jarvis    5-0-27-0

11.1

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, 1 run, Farhat opens the face and guides a single backward of point.

Still a slip in place.

11.2

Jarvis to Asad Shafiq, no run, Jarvis extracts some away nip off a length, Shafiq dabs into the off side and looks for a single.

11.3

Jarvis to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, angles the face this time and runs the ball down to third man for one.

Slip is off for Farhat.

11.4

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, show Farhat a touch of room and he will throw his bat at it with all the fury in the world. Waller at short cover does really well to stop it.

11.5

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, FOUR, ah, edged through the now vacant slip region. Farhat again goes hard at a slightly wide ball and it flies away to the left of the keeper.

11.6

Jarvis to Imran Farhat, no run, Farhat shoulders arms outside off, now that's a rarity.

Marcus: "There is a strong resemblance between Inzi and Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers. They could be the next Page 2 doppelgangers!" Will google Fielder's pic later. A touch of irony that the sleeping giant's doppelganger would be named 'Fielder'.

End of over 12 (6 runs) Pakistan 71/1 (RR: 5.91)
Imran Farhat    33* (38b 6x4)      KM Jarvis    6-0-33-0

12.1

Chigumbura to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, back of a length from Elton, Shafiq dabs another single with an opened face, towards third man.

12.2

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, Farhat looks to work a length ball across the line to the leg side, but can't find the gap.

12.3

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, Farhat looks to whip off the pads this time, but finds square leg.

12.4

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, FOUR, Masakadza at mid-off tries to make a mockery of Newton's laws, but gravity eventually prevails. Farhat gets under a length ball and muscles the off-drive in the air, and for a moment would have been concerned. But Masakadza's leap couldn't quite get there.

Slip back in for Farhat now.

12.5

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, perfect length to Farhat, short enough to ensure he can't drive, and wide enough to force him to go for it. He throws his bat at it, and misses.

12.6

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, and again, Farhat's violent swish sets up a strong breeze across the ground but doesn't connect.

End of over 13 (5 runs) Pakistan 76/1 (RR: 5.84)
Imran Farhat    37* (43b 7x4)      E Chigumbura    2-0-6-0
Asad Shafiq    10* (16b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    6-0-33-0

The run rate drops below 6, and Price comes on, round the stumps.

13.1

Price to Asad Shafiq, no run, full length around off stump, Shafiq defends solidly

13.2

Price to Asad Shafiq, no run, generously tossed up, Shafiq continues to defend.

13.3

Price to Asad Shafiq, no run, whoa, that bounced a lot. Price rips this in on a length, gets it to it and jump past Shafiq's nervous attempt to steer. Well bowled, nice set-up.

13.4

Price to Asad Shafiq, no run, Shafiq gets one on the pad and looks to dab to the leg side for one, but midwicket is in the way.

13.5

Price to Asad Shafiq, no run, Shafiq again tries to work one with the angle, but can't get it away.

13.6

Price to Asad Shafiq, no run, Price begins with a maiden. Shafiq punches from the crease, straight to mid-on.

End of over 14 (maiden) Pakistan 76/1 (RR: 5.42)

14.1

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, no run, Elton lands it on a length around middle and off, Farhat defends from the crease.

14.2

Chigumbura to Imran Farhat, OUT, Elton does the job. He's tied Farhat down with the tight lengths, and suddenly goes fuller, and I suspect, slightly slower. Farhat was too eager to drive, he seemed to be early on the shot and scooped it in the air towards cover, who tumbled forward to take a smart catch.

Drinks in Harare. Younis Khan is the new man in.

14.3

14.4

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, back of a length and angling in, Younis defends to the leg side.

Ravi: "Talking of Inzamam, does he hold the record for highest number of runouts in either form of the game he played in? If he doesn't, I'll guess why -- he must have ran himself out going for the record."

14.5

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, short of a length again, outside off, Younis doesn't meddle with it.

14.6

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, fuller ball to end the over, a wicket maiden. Younis drives it straight to mid-on. That's two maidens on the trot from Zim.

16.1

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, FOUR, classy from Younis. It was full and wide, he went into the drive and didn't bother to keep it down. He didn't have to. It was a packed arc in the covers, but Younis' wrists had found the gap perfectly.

16.2

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, cuts the room this time, Younis punches the full ball to mid-off.

16.3

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, well bowled, holds the length back and gets the offcutter to quietly nip in, hit the inner edge and strike Younis' pad.

16.4

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, good length again, gets Younis reaching out to drive and he mistimes it into the covers.

16.5

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, short of a length outside off, Younis stays beside the line as he taps into the covers.

Samiullah: "We say "RFM", "SLA" for bowlers, why we can not say it for Slow scoring batsmans like "Righ Handed Slow Sytle Batsman", "Left Handed Fast Medium Hitter?" That's a strange request.

16.6

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, no run, Younis can't time the cut away, he didn't have much room to work with. Another good over from Elton, despite the boundary ball

17.5

Price to Younis Khan, no run, back of a length and hurrying through, Younis can't do much with it.

Price to Younis Khan, 2 runs, Price sprays the last one down the leg side, and Younis cashes in with a dainty little tap-glance towards fine-leg

Harrison: "Is Younis still playing?? I thought he retired?" Welcome to the world of Pakistani cricket, my friend, where retirements and un-retirements and 'conditional' retirements don't really mean anything.

18.3

Chigumbura to Asad Shafiq, 3 runs, too full and too wide, Shafiq plays a good-looking square drive. That man Waller is really a wall at sweeper-cover. Not much has gone past him, after that early blemish. Ah, he fumbles after stopping the ball, and they get three.

20.2

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, FOUR, lovely shot. Younis again shuffles into position to punch a good length ball past the stumps. Long-on ran all the way back, put in the slide but didn't stop it cleanly. Zim's fielding standards have dipped alarmingly in recent years.

20.4

Chigumbura to Asad Shafiq, 2 runs, this time, Masakadza runs back from mid-on and actually stops the ball with the slide. It was a tougher save this time since Shafiq hit the ball much harder at the bowler, who deflected it past the stumps towards long-on.

Full ball on off stump, and Younis drilled it back violently at Masakadza. He did well to get his hands in position to catch it, but it did not stick, and popped up well to his right. Masakadza regrouped, dived full length to his right, but the ball landed just out of his reach. What an effort!

Utseya to Younis Khan, 1 run, punches the last ball past mid-on for a single. Utseya's been expensive today.

End of over 39 (8 runs) Pakistan 210/3 (RR: 5.38)

39.1

Chigumbura to Younis Khan, 1 run, back of a length from over the stumps, and Younis punches down the ground for a single.

39.2

Chigumbura to Shoaib Malik, no run, fullish length on off stump, Malik gets across to defend.

39.3

Chigumbura to Shoaib Malik, OUT, Elton Chigumbura takes a blinder on the rebound! Zimbabwe's fielding continues to be a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde show. Full ball on off stump, Malik got into the drive and hit it to the left of the bowler at shin-height. Elton reacted superbly on his follow through to pluck it low to his left as he skid and tumbled alongside it.

Shoaib Malik c & b Chigumbura 14 (23m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Misbah is the new man in. Unlikely to get his maiden ODI ton today.

Maji: "WHY WHY WHY do we play shoaib malik and Imran farhat? Why not Azhar Ali and some new blood ?" Boy, Pakistan fans are sure baying for new blood today.

40.1

Jarvis to Younis Khan, 1 run, angled into the pads, worked through the midwicket region for one.

40.2

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, short ball to Misbah, who stays in the crease and works it to the leg side.

40.3

Jarvis to Younis Khan, OUT, another stunning return catch, and Pakistan are in a spot of strife here. It was in many ways a replay of Malik's dismissal - full ball, eliciting the drive to the left of the bowler, who reacted rapidly to tumble and pluck it low, with both hands this time, on his follow through. Younis seemed to be drawn into the shot early and couldn't keep it down. 300 too optimistic now?

Younis Khan c & b Jarvis 81 (99m 90b 6x4 1x6) SR: 90.00

40.4

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, Adnan does the hare-brained running act again. Nearly. Taps the ball and just takes off. Misbah sends him back, wisely.

40.6

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, over-pitched on the middle and leg line, Adnan punches down the ground for a single.

43.6

Utseya to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, tight single, but Misbah makes it. Adnan worked it straight to midwicket and took off, Misbah had to really fly in to beat the throw to the keeper.

Adnan Akmal    6* (12b)      P Utseya    10-0-57-0
Misbah-ul-Haq    6* (12b)      RW Price    9-1-38-1

Jarvis back on.

44.1

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, short ball aimed at Adnan's ribs and he nudges it to the leg side, looking for the single. He runs half way up too and comes back in, as Taibu collects and thinks of having a shy.

44.2

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, yorker from Jarvis, Adnan digs it out into the off side, and Utseya quickly gets to it. He needlessly shies at the stumps though, and concedes the single.

44.3

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, dainty from Misbah. He goes for a stroll across the stumps, gets the full ball on off stump and twinkles it past short fine leg. Expertly done.

44.4

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 3 runs, full again on off stump, Misbah moves across and clips it daintily through midwicket for more runs.

44.5

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 1 wide, effort ball, has Adnan in some strife as he jumps up and shoulders arms, but it went marginally down the leg side, and was called wide.

44.6

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, Adnan finds cover again, drilling a length ball well but without placement.

Several people sending in comments asking Heather for doughnuts. Just letting Heather know.

Pakistan can't delay the batting Powerplay anymore, so here it comes.

45.1

Price to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, flighted outside off from Price, Misbah defends into the off side.

45.2

Price to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Price goes wide of the stumps, Misbah sees him and backs away, Price sees that and follows him. Cat and mouse game this! Single taken to the leg side in the end.

45.3

Price to Adnan Akmal, 2 runs, Adnan chips out while opening up the off side and carves insider-out to deep cover for a couple.

45.4

Price to Adnan Akmal, FOUR, well played Adnan, he backs away in search of the off side gap and clatters a slow loopy ball through the covers.

45.5

Price to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, gets the single this time, getting across and pushing through mid-on

45.6

Price to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, Misbah backs away, Price follows him again and seems to have cut out all width, but Misbah still manages to open the wrists and guide him nearly all the way to the deep cover fence. Smart batting.

End of over 46 (10 runs) Pakistan 244/5 (RR: 5.30)
Misbah-ul-Haq    16* (17b 1x4)      RW Price    10-1-48-1
Adnan Akmal    14* (19b 1x4)      KM Jarvis    8-0-45-1

46.1

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, super yorker from Jarvis. Adnan backs away and looks to squeeze it into the covers, but there's nothing he can do with this ball.

46.2

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, full ball outside off, Adnan drives it straight to Price standing deep in the circle. Misbah wanted one, Adnan didn't respond. Price fumbled and then Adnan wanted the run, but Misbah did not. Yes, no, thank you.

46.3

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, low full toss on the pads, Adnan whips it past midwicket to the deep and they get a single. Poor running, they should have tried to hustle one more.

46.4

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah walks all across the crease, Jarvis keeps it very full on leg stump and Misbah whips straight to short fine-leg.

46.5

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, Utseya spills one at cover. Short ball outside off, Adnan didn't expect that length as he backed away and looked to carve it. He didn't time it at all and it lobbed to cover, and Utseya should have held on as he tumbled forward.

46.6

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, no run, another yorker, this time wide of off stump, to end the over. Adnan can't dab it away. Jarvis is doing quite well in this spell.

End of over 47 (2 runs) Pakistan 246/5 (RR: 5.23)
Adnan Akmal    15* (24b 1x4)      KM Jarvis    9-0-47-1
Misbah-ul-Haq    17* (18b 1x4)      RW Price    10-1-48-1

Vitori comes on ... And he runs in round the stumps, after starting from straightish mid-on! The non-striker is standing on the off side, so he didn't expect it. Misbah didn't either, and pulled out of his stance as Vitori got into his stride. Now he announces it. and will bowl round the stumps.

47.1

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full length ball outside off, Misbah can't get the single as he plays it into the off side.

47.2

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah stays in the crease and drives a single down the ground.

47.3

Vitori to Adnan Akmal, 1 leg bye, Adnan walks across the stumps and tries the good old Dougie Marillier scoop. He isn't Dougie Marillier though, and doesn't get bat on it. It lobs up off the pad and lands just behind the stumps as Taibu charges in, but Misbah is too quick for him. Single taken.

47.4

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, another one close to the blockhole, Misbah can't get more than one for it, with a whip to the man at midwicket.

47.5

Vitori to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, 250 comes up as Adnan makes room and drives into the covers for another single.

47.6

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, FOUR, supreme from Misbah. He walks across again, converts the attempted yorker into a low full toss angling into the pads and flicks it through midwicket for four.

End of over 48 (8 runs) Pakistan 254/5 (RR: 5.29)
Misbah-ul-Haq    23* (22b 2x4)      BV Vitori    8-1-54-1
Adnan Akmal    16* (26b 1x4)      KM Jarvis    9-0-47-1

48.1

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, Adnan backs away, almost gets too far away from Jarvis' full ball on middle and off. He manages to squeeze it into the covers for one.

48.2

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah's go-to shot - he goes well back in the crease, sits on one knee and looks to dump it over the leg side, but Jarvis' length is too full and Misbah can only get a single to long-on.

48.3

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 3 runs, Adnan again backs away, and uses the pace of the ball to dab the ball between point and short third man. It nearly goes to the fence, and they take three by the time it is tagged.

48.4

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah again walks across the stumps, and looks to tickle it past short fine leg. He can't get it past that fielder though.

48.5

Jarvis to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, another yorker! Adnan once again opens up the stumps and looks to crash it into the covers, but it whimpers to the fielder without and pace on it.

48.6

Jarvis to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah looks to play it Adnan style this time, but Jarvis remains unhittable. Yorker inner edged past leg stump, and only a single taken.

End of over 49 (8 runs) Pakistan 262/5 (RR: 5.34)
Misbah-ul-Haq    26* (25b 2x4)      KM Jarvis    10-0-55-1
Adnan Akmal    21* (29b 1x4)      BV Vitori    8-1-54-1

49.1

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 wide, Vitori sprays this wildly down the leg side from well wide of off stump, and it is called a wide. He needs to keep his cool here.

49.1

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, slower ball well outside off, Misbah looks to lace it into the covers and Utseya inside the circle dives to his right to save three runs.

49.2

Vitori to Adnan Akmal, 1 no ball, lovely ball, but oh dear! It is a no-ball. Vitori has cut the side line - I dare say, not for the first time today, but he is finally called. Length ball angling in, Adnan can't connect with the heave. He will heave again the next ball.

Free-hit coming up.

49.2

Vitori to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, back of a length from Vitori, did well to ensure Adnan can't drive, and he gets only a single through mid-on.

49.3

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah backs away to a full toss, and has no room to work with. He forces it for a single into the covers.

49.4

Vitori to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, yorker almost entirely perfect this time. Adnan forces it meekly into the off side from the leg stump for a single.

49.5

Vitori to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, Misbah looks to walk inside the line and hoist it with the angle, but Jarvis at backward square leg charges to his left and dives to stop another boundary!

49.6

Vitori to Adnan Akmal, 1 run, Adnan backs away to the last ball and gets a single into the covers. Pakistan finish with 270, at least 30 short by my reckoning. The Powerplay has only yielded 36 despite the fact that Pak did not lose any wickets in that phase.

A real curate's egg that innings, from both sides. Pakistan started in a hurry, seemed to get bogged down, and then lifted their pace before losing two crucial wickets one after the other. They ended briskly, but the real fireworks were missing. Zim began atrociously, and then dragged it back. The fielding veered between ordinary and extraordinary through out, and they will be happy with how they finished. 271 is gettable, but will take a big effort from them. Join us at 1.40 pm for the chase. Meanwhile, Firdose Moonda's report should be updated and ready to read in a bit.

End of over 50 (8 runs) Pakistan 270/5
