Pakistan in Zimbabwe ODI Series - 1st ODI

Zimbabwe v Pakistan

Zimbabwe won by 7 wickets (with 10 balls remaining)

Jamshed and Shehzad out to open for Pakistan

Misbah wins the toss and Pakistan will bat

Viljoen tells Misbah he is the first Pakistan captain to lead in 50 successive ODIs. "Yeah, someone told me in the morning," Misbah says. Pakistan have included Umar Amin in the middle order. And Haris Sohail is also there. This is a deep batting line-up, possible due to the presence of Hafeez, who can be expected to bowl plenty of overs today

Brendan Taylor hopes there will be something in the pitch for his attack in the first hour. Tendai Chatara is in for Shingi Masakadza. "Same batting line-up," says Taylor, who wants Zimbabwe to cut down on the extras. Thinks between 260 and 280 is a good score

Zimbabwe cricket has just come through its latest crisis. You can read the match preview here and Hamilton Masakadza's views here

"Do you know who told Misbah in the morning?" Mazher Arshad pings me, and adds a helpful wink, completely giving himself away. I get the hint, Mazher. Wink, wink

Shahid: "Misbah should experiment with Umar Amin bowling and that too while in a pressure situation. Pakistan needs to find new part time bowlers among their batsmen."

"I think Hafeez should be rested, he's not performing well in ODIs and need to be reminded that everyone has to perform to maintain their place in team, and if he's selected then he should bat at 5 or 6, he's not one-down batsman," says Moied Yousuf

Dav Whatmore, the Pakistan coach and a man experienced in the ways of the subcontinent, says Ajmal is not as hard to handle as Muralitharan was. All that match-winners like them need is to be given confidence, he says. "I can't teach him how to bowl the doosra anyway." All sorted there.

What does he want from Pakistan in this series? He wants some experimentation with the batting Powerplay. Need not take it always in the 36th over, he says, if there are two set batsmen around much earlier.

8.50am This is the same pitch that was used for the second T20, and that one was a belter. Dirk Viljoen is slightly concerned with a few cracks on it, but feels batting first is not be going to be anywhere near as hard as it was during the India series. These games are starting half an hour later than those ones did, and Viljoen says the pitches have also taken a lot more sun

8.45am The ODI leg of Pakistan's tour of Zimbabwe begins today in Harare. Toss in 15 minutes

38.4

Panyangara to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, OUT, Amin is gone on the second run, after facing just one ball, it was always going to a tight attempt as they decided to go for the additional run after a whip behind square leg, the throw was at the right end, the bowler's, and was spot-on, Amin had a long way to cover, he didn't help himself at all by hesitating in responding to Misbah's push for the second

43.2

Vitori to Haris Sohail, OUT, hello, how is this even possible, calling this a blinder is a huge understatement, Sohail has bashed this widish length delivery, Utseya is there at shortish extra cover for the uppish drive, but this is a full-blown cross-batted thunderblow, Utseya has leapt to his right, taken it one-handed, and come down on earth with the ball lodged safely in his hands, once he realises it has stuck, he allows himself a relieved celebration, holding arms aloft

Gautam: "The score could've been much lower were it not for all the dropped catches and missed stumpings. Not sure why Misbah gets so much flak. He's held it together amid another collapse."

46.2

47.4

Vitori to Sarfraz Ahmed, no run, he's played a couple of deft late cuts now, but each time has picked out backward point

47.5

Vitori to Sarfraz Ahmed, 1 run, OUT, he's been given by the third umprire, Sarfraz had set off for what seemed to be a dangerous second in front of square leg, but looked to have made it with a massive dive before Taylor took the bails off, taking the ball in front of the stumps, that didn't make for easy decision making on the replays, but at worst there was doubt on this one, and at best, Sarfraz's bat was safely in, stunned glances all around from Pakistan, from Sarfraz, Misbah, and Whatmore

Sarfraz Ahmed run out 7 (22m 18b 0x4 0x6) SR: 38.88

49.4

Panyangara to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, right in the blockhole now, and Misbah can only dig it out

49.5

Panyangara to Misbah-ul-Haq, SIX, connects big second time in the over, it is a full toss this time and mowed over deep square leg

49.6

Panyangara to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, Zimbabwe end the innings with another dropped chance, extremely hard one though, Misbah slices this full delivery over point, fielder runs back, dives but cannot take it, Misbah is happy with two, and Sarfraz has to get back

Misbah's seen Pakistan collapse from 179 for 2, and shepherded them again to a reasonable score. He's also managed to end at a strike-rate of 97.64. The man rarely disappoints. Ideally, you would want him to have some more firepower but he comes from an age when anything close to run a ball was blockbuster stuff, and he bats for a line-up which is as fickle as the box-office.

This pitch tends to ease out appreciably during the chase, but Pakistan's attack is also top class. Vishal Dikshit will take you through after the break, this is Abhishek Purohit signing off from this match.

Mazher Arshad: "Misbah-ul-Haq (891) now has most ODI runs in year 2013. He has just gone past Kumar Sangakkara, who has 883."
