South Africa Test squad

  • Hashim Amla (capt), AB de Villiers (vice-capt), Kyle Abbott, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Imran Tahir, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Alviro Petersen, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Dale Steyn, Stiaan van Zyl

South Africa have retained their victorious Test squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare starting August 9. South Africa regained their No.1 Test ranking after three months when they beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in the two-Test series that concluded on Monday.

It was Hashim Amla's first Test series as full-time captain, following the retirement of Graeme Smith. South Africa will play a three-match bilateral ODI series with Zimbabwe following the Test and stay back for a tri-series, also involving Australia.

"The Proteas have earned a vote of confidence," said Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson. "We will be naming the ODI squad for the three-match series against Zimbabwe next week and will give consideration to resting a couple of players.

"We will, however, be sending our full-strength ODI squad for the following triangular series against Zimbabwe and Australia."

South Africa last played a Test series in Zimbabwe back in 2001.

Perhaps this time Alviro will step up his game cause he hasnt been performing. Nevertheless, I know SA will perform well.

must applaud south africa on still sending their first XI for the test!! as far as im concerned it ceases to be test cricket when players are being rested!!! dont know what to make of zimbabwe at present??? rate vitori as decent quick but always injured!!! look forward to watching the tri series on tv here in aus as zimbabwe arent a team we get to see too often!!!

This is the best chance for Lara's 400 record to be broken! SA should send a second string side to at least take the match to 3 days. Honestly I can't see how a Zim side struggling against Afghanistan can trouble Steyn & co.

Does this now mean that Alviro gets ANOTHER chance. Here's a chance to inject and reward a younger cricketer. Wake up Hudson.

Some regular players who are playing non stop cricket might be rested as it is very easy tour for South Africa. The likes of Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn might be rested so that some young talent got their chances.

Some people are saying that Alviro must play because 'we don't have any other openers knocking on the door'. Rubbish. One look at the highest runscorers list from the last Sunfoil Series shows you that young David White from the Warriors (former SA U19 star), a specialist opener, scored 882 runs in the season at an average of 49.00 with 3 centuries and 5 fifties. Pick him in place of Alviro. He can hardly do worse.

It seems simple to me who the team should be.

van Zyl, Elgar, Amla, du Plessis, AB, de Kock, Duminy, Philander, Piedt, Steyn, Morkel.

Philander stays because of his impressive overall record, but does anyone have the stats for his two recent test series? Surely they're poor. His job is as a bowler, not an all-rounder.

Alivro and Tahir make way as both are older and underperforming, with little potential to show they can improve in the international arena. Why not try two young exciting players in a series with not much on the line against on of the poorer teams?

Zimbabwe should convince Erwine brother to play for Zimbabwe, also they should bring back Coventry. They should have strongly built fast bowlers who can bowl fast like Streak and Blignaught.

SA should give rest to Steyn, ABDV & Amla for this series. Give captaincy to Faf & rest are almost same as they all were in SL. I don't know much about Van Zyl & Piedt but try them, this is the best chance to try the bench strength. Then bring back all main players in Triangular ODI series against Australia. Because the main task will start from then.
