Bangladesh tour of Zimbabwe, 2009 / Commentary

Bangladesh in Zimbabwe ODI Series - 5th ODI

Zimbabwe v Bangladesh

Bangladesh won by 5 wickets (with 13 balls remaining)

The players are out in the middle, we are set for the start. It's Sid Talya taking you through the commentary today, and Raju's on the scoring duties. Kanishkaa's the bully - He's writing the bulletin, I meant. Rasel will start off. Only slip and a short cover, here we go.

Toss: Zimbabwe have won, and opted to set a target. It's the usual cliched phrases, "put some runs on the board, put them under pressure," et all et all. Three changes for Zimbabwe, Sibanda is in for Vermeulen. We'll get you the others in the bit. Bangladesh have excluded Mahbubul and called in Dolar Mahmud. Mehrab is in for Enamul. There's no Mupariwa or Matsinkenyeri; Cremer, the extra spinner, and Rainsford take their spaces.

A bright and sunny day in Bulawayo, the weather has been perfect throughout this rubber. A virtually empty stadium to start with but the crowds have been decent as the games have progressed. Some pre-match chatter happening now, Athar Ali Khan's raving about Coventry. There are a few cracks on the pitch but despite all that, it's another good batting track. There might be some movement but the side batting first, the experts say, should bat.

They're keeping us waiting. Some interesting bit of news from West Indies where the selectors have retained a makeshift team for the Champions Trophy, so there are little signs of the problem with the board and players being resolved in the near future. Tony Cozier explores the origins of the stand-off between the WIPA and the WICB here, a brilliant article this.

You may also want to direct your attention to a really exciting Test match happening down in Galle, where Dilshan's going bonkers. New Zealand are being smacked around. That's not meant to deflect your focus completely from this game, we should get some exciting cricket here as well. We could expect another run-fest, that's how the pitches have played this series.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of this dead rubber between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh being played in Bulawayo. It didn't seem like it would end up this way after Chris Coventry's magical 194, but Bangladesh made pretty easy work of a substantial score to seal the series. They've won three ODI series in a row now and will look to cap off with authority. Zimbabwe have fought hard but their bowling has let them down. Still a while for the toss, so you can kill some time reading the preview.

0.1

Syed Rasel to Sibanda, no run, straight to the catcher but on the bounce, short outside off, punched off the back foot to short cover

0.2

Syed Rasel to Sibanda, no run, big appeal for lbw, came back in sharply, Sibanda bent low and offered no stroke, was rapped on the pads just outside the line but it doesn't matter because he offered no shot, looked mighty close, it may have just missed off but that was certainly worth a shout

1.5

Dolar Mahmud to Sibanda, OUT, bizzare, really bizzarre, Sibanda's embarrassed himself here! Left his leg stump alone, huge shuffle towards middle and it's pitched up on leg with a hint of inward movement, he offers no shot thinking it'll slide down the leg side but hears the death rattle, the leg stump's out of the ground and Sibanda's inclusion has failed to deliver

3.3

Dolar Mahmud to Coventry, OUT, Coventry's gone! The swing's doing the trick for Mahmud, pitched up outside off, had frustrated Coventry so far and the batsman went for flowing drive through mid-off, it moved away to kiss the outside edge and Mushfiqur hurled himself to his right to snap a sharp one, the record-holder's been dismissed for a duck

CK Coventry c †Mushfiqur Rahim b Dolar Mahmud 0 (3m 7b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Michael Perera: "Charles Coventry's played 16 games and his highest score is 194*....say what you will about the quality of the opposition, but that's still surreal. Saeed Anwar must be tickled pink."

MN Waller    10* (11b 1x4)      Syed Rasel    4-0-18-0

8.1

Syed Rasel to Masakadza, FOUR, nice timing on that one, not too much width but he adjusts well and thumps it off the meat of the bat and bisects the gap between mid-off and cover, plays from the crease and boy that must have felt good

8.2

Syed Rasel to Masakadza, OUT, run out, Masakadza's fun stops here, Rasel changes the pace and Masakadza gets forward and angles it down to short third man, no realistic chance of a single but the batsman sets off, there's confusion in the calling and he turns around and makes a desperate attempt to make his ground, Ashraful fires the throw to Mushfiqur and the third umpire confirms the run out

H Masakadza run out 25 (37m 24b 4x4 0x6) SR: 104.16

Mahmud runs in

9.1

Dolar Mahmud to Waller, OUT, timber! Superb delivery, the inswinger this time. Pitched on a good length outside off and Waller reached forward to defend it into the off side, it darted back in to beat him through the gate and crash into the stumps, Zimbabwe are sliding here

MN Waller b Dolar Mahmud 10 (25m 12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

A memorable return for Mahmud here. Masakadza and Waller appeared to have settled in to launch a recovery after those two wickets but they've both been sent back. Zimbabwe need to start from the scratch now, Chugumbura walks in. Huge responsibility on him and Williams.

9.2

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, no run, on target straightaway, targeting middle and off, just a hint of away movement, defended with a straight at just wide of the bowler

9.3

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, 1 run, shortish on middle and leg, turned wide of midwicket from the crease, a lot of hesitation in calling there but no damage done, single completed easily in the end

A slip and a gully

9.4

Dolar Mahmud to Williams, 1 wide, Willaims chases that one, was too wide for him to go for it, just swung hard at it, aiming to crash it through the covers but missed, given a wide though

9.4

Dolar Mahmud to Williams, no run, harmless this time, short of a length outside off, Williams doesn't bother chasing it

9.5

Dolar Mahmud to Williams, no run, swung in from outside off to crash into his thighs, would have been sliding down but the movement's having them in all sorts of trouble here

9.6

Dolar Mahmud to Williams, FOUR, short and wide, it's the zone for Williams who cuts it away between point and cover for a boundary, he favours that area, got off the mark in a similar fashion

End of over 10 (6 runs) Zimbabwe 53/4 (RR: 5.30)
SC Williams    8* (7b 2x4)      Dolar Mahmud    5-0-21-3
E Chigumbura    1* (2b)      Syed Rasel    5-0-26-0

10.5

A deepish slip in place

10.6

Syed Rasel to Williams, no run, over the wicket to the left hander, straightish delivery on middle, defended rock solid back to the bowler

End of over 11 (5 runs) Zimbabwe 58/4 (RR: 5.27)
SC Williams    8* (8b 2x4)      Syed Rasel    6-0-31-0
E Chigumbura    6* (7b 1x4)      Dolar Mahmud    5-0-21-3

11.1

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, no run, beaten, Mahmud continues to bother them, not much movement this time but just a tiny bit, pushes at it with little intent and is unable to connect

11.2

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, 1 wide, sliding down leg this time, a rare error from the bowler, given a wide

11.2

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, no run, slightly short on middle, rocks back, closes the face and knocks it down to midwicket

11.3

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, 1 run, Chigbumbura's lucky! Short on middle, held up a little and Chigumbura was too early in trying to turn it into the leg side, gets a leading edge and it lands safe between mid-on and mid-off

11.5

E Chigumbura    7* (10b 1x4)      Syed Rasel    6-0-31-0

Dilshan's rapidfire knock has ended in Galle, it's shaping up to be a cracking Test.

12.1

12.2

Syed Rasel to Chigumbura, no run, bowled on a driving length outside off, cracked it straight to cover

12.3

Syed Rasel to Chigumbura, no run, slower one this time, he picked it, watched it onto his bat and dropped it down towards point

12.4

Syed Rasel to Chigumbura, no run, shot, but straight to the fielder, overpitched outside off and he leans into a drive, stroking it straight to cover

12.5

Syed Rasel to Chigumbura, 1 run, sliding on the leg stump, worked away just wide of short fine for a quick single

12.6

Syed Rasel to Williams, OUT, gone! Rasel's struck, Williams goes, the inswinger, short of a good length outside off and cut back in sharply, Williams rocked back to punch it towards mid-on but was done in by the movement, was rapped on the pads in front of the off stump, the umpire had no hesitation and he's made the right call

SC Williams lbw b Syed Rasel 12 (13b 2x4 0x6) SR: 92.30

A couple of meaty shots in his brief innings, the ball's coming on nicely but it's the swing that has troubled them, good to see the ball doing a bit after a series of high-scorers on placid tracks. Not that it's unplayable, Sibanda and Coventry were out tamely, Waller was done in by a beautiful inswinger while Masakadza had poor running to blame for his downfall. They haven't applied themselves too well here despite promising to recover.

End of over 13 (4 runs) Zimbabwe 65/5 (RR: 5.00)
     Syed Rasel    7-0-35-1
E Chigumbura    8* (14b 1x4)      Dolar Mahmud    6-0-24-3

13.3

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, no run

13.4

Dolar Mahmud to Chigumbura, OUT, Dolar gets his fourth! Angling in towards middle from slightly wide of the crease, came half-forward and tried to close the face with bat perilously close to his pads to play it into the leg side, missed and was struck plumb in front

E Chigumbura lbw b Dolar Mahmud 12 (18b 2x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Big wicket, that. Again, two fours in Chigumbura's knock just hinted at a possible resistance but Bangladesh have struck at the right time

13.6

14.6

Syed Rasel to Taylor, no run, swung back in, he didn't expect it to, played down the wrong line as he came forward to defend and was struck on the thighs, would have gone over

End of over 15 (4 runs) Zimbabwe 73/6 (RR: 4.86)

Zimbabwe are yet to take the final powerplay.

Jame Chirima: "Utseya's captaincy is very questionable. First he sends out Chigumbura ahead of Taylor, when Zimbabwe needed a consolidating player not a naturally attacking player. Secondly is he waiting for the 10th wicket to fall before he takes the batting powerplay?"

Zimbabwe have folded for 209, recovering well after tottering at 69 for 6. Dolar Mahmud did the bulk of the damage early on, swinging it both ways to unsettle the batsmen but Taylor and Utseya launched a recovery before the Zimbabwe captain got out to a poor shot. Taylor reached his 14th half-century but was wrongly given out lbw; Price, though, hung on to reach his best ODI score and take his team past 200. A respectable score, considering the situation they were in, but the pitch has eased out and Bangladesh will fancy taking a 4-1 lead. Join us in a bit for the chase.
