Tom Plant missed out on a first-team appearance for South Australia's first-class side in 2007-08 but impressed on the Adelaide Oval against the touring Sri Lankans with 124 in a three-day draw. The previous season he had posted two unmemorable appearances after seeing no state action in 2005-06. A right-hand opening batsman, Plant played eight games in 2004-05 and despite a gutsy 125 in the second innings against New South Wales - South Australia slipped for 29 in the first - he managed only 286 runs at 17.87 and was dropped for the final two fixtures. He was promoted from the rookie list to the senior squad for 2007-08 and, although he didn't appear for the Redbacks, he made a century and a fifty in ten grade matches for his club Glenelg.
