Hong Kong Cricket mourns the death of Rahuman Farcy [02.06.2003]

The Hong Kong Cricket Association is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Abdul Hassan Abdul Rahuman Farcy.

Rahuman, as he was widely known, first arrived in Hong Kong in 1967 and played league cricket for the next five years as well as appearing for the Hong Kong International side. An all rounder, he was a fast opening bowler and an accomplished top order right hand batsman.

Rahuman returned to Hong Kong in 1994 and joined the Hong Kong Cricket Association as an Assistant Development Officer. He remained with the Association until his retirement in March 2003 as a Sports Executive. He was a popular member of the staff. Always helpful and pleasant.

Rahuman will be fondly remembered, by all who knew him, as a thorough gentlemen who loved the sport of cricket and put his heart and soul into developing the game in Hong Kong. Many of those now playing league cricket in Hong Kong owe much to his dedication, enthusiasm and coaching ability.

Former Hong Kong Cricket Association Operations Manager Mark Burns recalled.

"It's with great sadness that I came to learn of the sudden death of Rahuman Farcy.

I remember David Trist once remarking to me that if you ever wanted to meet someome who was a true lover of the sport of cricket, one only had to look no further than Rahuman Farcy. One only had to see Rahuman watching a cricket match, see how completely absorbed and wrapped he would be in the ebb and flow of the match and an appreciation of every ball bowled and shot made, no matter whether it was a Test or an Under 15 limited overs match, to understand what David was talking about. Rahuman was a true cricket devotee.

Out of all of us at HKCA I always found Rahuman to be the most unswervingly passionate about cricket with all of his energies directed to the good of the sport. Whether he was improving the skills of youngsters through his coaching, or in other areas such as umpiring, managing a representative cricket squad or performing administration work, the good of cricket came first and Rahuman constantly, and with a diligence and honesty tough to match, sought to improve the standing of the game in HK.

To his great credit Rahuman also sought not just to improve the playing skills of youngsters but also to inspire in them a full appreciation of cricket, it's history, spirit and etiquette and he would certainly entertain no nonsense from individuals who did not compete in the spirit of the game!

Rahuman was passionate about cricket and also about his singing! I remember attending the LSW End of Season Dinner a number of years ago when after all the formalities and dining to my surprise Rahuman became the main attraction as he took the stage and filled the dancefloor with his talented Hindi singing. This came as a revelation to me at the time but I soon came to find out that Rahuman was well known in those circles for his singing prowess.

Rahuman's honesty, spirit, diligence and his passion for cricket will be sadly missed."

Rahuman leaves a wife, Fareeka, two sons, Riaz and Imran, and daughter Farina Ifthikar. We convey our sincere condolences to them over their loss.

Rahuman's legacy is the game of cricket in Hong Kong.

Tributes to Mr Rahuman Farcy

I was very sad to hear earlier today that Rahuman had passed away. He will be missed by all those who have had the pleasure of knowing him. I usually see Rahuman at Junior cricket at KCC on Saturday mornings where he is organising the sessions for the kids. My son remembered Rahuman because Rahuman had encouraged him and told him how well he was doing. A great confidence booster for a seven year old. He also came up to Sha Tin Junior School to coach the children and I remember how much they enjoyed Rahuman's sessions and in particular how they responded to his enthusiasm. He gave a lot of praise and couldn't help giving constant pointers to help the children improve their skills. "Always finish with a game," he said "because that's the most important part." I would like to send my condolences to Riaz and his family. A great loss. Always remembered for his gentle kindness.

I couldnt believe when I heard the news of Mr.Farcy's demise. Its a great loss to Hong Kong Cricket. Mr.Farcy was A True Gentleman with a ever pleasing personality, always extending his hand to help others. We and everyone connected with Hong Kong cricket will miss him. I remember knowing Rahuman back in 1996, when I just started playing cricket in Hong Kong and helped out with the cricket development programme. After that on and off we met at official functions as well as at cricket matches where if he had the time he will always hang around and enjoyed the action. I will always remember his pleasant smile and gentle manner, which I believe is also a true reflection on his attitude towards cricket. He will be missed.

We were very saddened to hear of the passing away of Rahuman Farcy, who has played a big part in promoting cricket amongst children in this area. Our thoughts go out to Rahuman's family and we hope that they can find some comfort in the fact that, for many people in Hong Kong, he was part of a large family whose love of life is channelled through a love of cricket. I am saddened to learn the loss of Rahuman Farcy. Mr. Farcy was one of the men that brought me into the world of cricket. I have known him since I was a youngster playing Saturday morning cricket. Through the devoted teachings of Mr. Farcy, he had helped raise my level of cricket eligible to play for the Hong Kong Team as a wicket keeper. He was an excellent team manager on tours and very supportive. His commitment and love for the game is unmatched, he will be missed greatly and will be remembered.

Mr. Farcy will be greatly missed from the bottom of my heart. His enthusiasm for the game and his love and support towards cricket in Hong Kong was truly inspirational. Mr. Farcy was a source of encouragement as coach or manager of the under 15 and under 19 cricket team. I have many fond memories of Rahuman Farcy, having worked with him for a number of years at the Hong Kong Cricket Association. I remember his unparalleled commitment towards junior cricketers and cricket development in HK. I remember Rahuman at the junior cricket centers: always the first present, most prepared and easily the most enthusiastic of all coaches present. He had vast experience of cricket in Hong Kong which he passed on to many of his colleagues. However, I will remember him most by is his almost child-like fondness and love for cricket which in his years never diminished and perhaps never will. A very familiar figure in the Hongkong Cricket scene, especially with the juniors, and people like him come in very rarely.
