Club Prizegiving Dinner

The Gauteng Club prize giving dinner was held on Wednesday evening, 12 May in the stunning Wanderers Club Ballroom. Guest speaker was Darren Scott who let all of us know who his prospective World Cup Rugby Team was.

But after an intense season of club cricket it was time to let those who had excelled reap the rewards. Our sponsors Datatec presented the Player of the Year Award to Dean Laing, of Jeppe Old Boys, for his overall performance with both bat and ball, scoring 412 runs at an average of 34.33 and Taking 45 wicket s at an economy rate of only 12.8. Definitely a performance worth recognition. Dean Laing was also the recipient of the Bowler of the Year award for this outstanding bowling performance.

Batsmen of the Year went to Neil McKenzie who scored 766 runs at the impressive average of 109.43. Neil is from ABSA RAU and was not the only reason for ABSA RAU being voted Datatec Club of the Year as they excelled in all aspects of their administration and on the field of play. It was felt that since ABSA RAU had won two competitions this year and ended the season as current Club Champions of South Africa, it was fitting for them to be awarded Club of the year.

Wicket keeper of the Year Award went to Dylan Jennings, an achievement he also attained last season. Dylan was involved in an astounding 44 dismissals this season.

A club excelling themselves in administration this season was Vaal Technikon, as a result of their co-operation and involvement in all aspects of Gauteng Club administration.

Sunday League teams received eight trophies with the overall Premier league winners being Zoo Lake and AbSA RAU once more on the receiving side with their Premier reserve league trophy. First league winners were Roodepoort City with Crusaders coming first in the Second league. Investec Lenasia received the trophy for Sunday Third League. Rand Refinery were the proud recipients of the Sunday Fourth league Trophy with Maraisburg-Delfos winning the Fifth League. Winners of the Sunday Sixth league were Primrose.

ABSA RAU were winners of the Saturday First league. Maraisburg-Delfos performed well to receive the Second league trophy. Azaadville United were the proud recipients of our Third league trophy with MCC Alberton coming in as winners of the Fourth league. This year it was Roodepoort City that came out on top of the Saturday Fifth league. Rand Refinery finished the season as winners of the Saturday Sixth league. The last two clubs to receive trophies were Marlboro for their performance in the seventh league and Randfontein for their success in the Eighth league.

We wish all these clubs luck for the 99/00 season and hope that the enthusiasm of this year will continue to grow with the game.
