Yuvraj steers India clear

Tell me more

Beating an Australian team is never an easy job, least of all in a knockout match in a World Cup. In 2011, Yuvraj Singh was determined to do it

"For the first time in my life there have been claps in a press conference," Yuvraj Singh said.

He had just dealt the final blow that dumped Australia, the defending champions, out and fast-tracked India's chances of World Cup glory.

In the first innings, Yuvraj's left-arm sliders strangled the batsmen at one end, even as Ricky Ponting soldiered on at the other.

Gilly goes ballistic

After the 2007 final, there was no doubt what the greatest innings played in such a match was

Batting with a squash ball in your glove can be a painful experience, but not for Gilchrist. The result was perhaps the best performance in a World Cup final. This was his third scene-stealer in consecutive World Cup finals. Against Pakistan at Lord's in 1999, he cracked 54 from 36 balls; four years later against India in Johannesburg, he made 57 from 48. But nothing quite compared to this.

Punter in paradise

Ponting played himself in and then inflicted major damage on India's bowlers

He may have lost the toss, but by the time Ricky Ponting walked out to the middle on World Cup final day, Australia had the perfect start. Adam Gilchrist had bludgeoned his way to 57 from 48 balls, adding 105 in just 14 overs with Matthew Hayden. In such a scenario, Ponting could afford to play himself in, and he duly did so with Damien Martyn for company after Hayden gave Harbhajan Singh a second wicket.

Warne mesmerises in classic

The greatest World Cup match, and it was a pudgy blond who shone brightest

Generations of grandkids will know of the greatest one-day match of all, and of the man who scripted it. It's the stuff of folklore: the bizarre last over, with the two boundaries hammered by Lance Klusener, the inexplicable mix-up with Allan Donald, the scores tied. But without a doubt, every soul who was at Birmingham that lovely day will say it was a pudgy blond's day.

Mad Max destroys India

Aravinda de Silva was in the zone at Eden Gardens, scoring at manic pace, yet without a trace of violence

Sri Lanka's path to the last-eight stage of the 1996 World Cup was made easy by two walkovers they received as a result of Australia and West Indies refusing to travel to Sri Lanka on security grounds, and it remains a bit a of myth that they were propelled by the explosive starts provided by Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana. Kalu scored a mere 73 runs in the World Cup at 12.16 and crossed 20 only twice.

Inzi announces his arrival

Inzamam-ul-Haq's 60 in the semi-final scuppered New Zealand's dream

The great World Cup dream seemed to be turning into a nightmare: Pakistan needed an improbable 123 runs in the final 15 overs. That was when Inzamam-ul-Haq chose to script a fantasy. Imran Khan had told his team to play like "cornered tigers" in the tournament but he himself had played like a wounded tiger that day. His laborious 43, as Pakistan chased 263, had consumed 93 balls. The other old hand, Javed Miandad, was still in the middle when a young Inzamam entered the arena.

'Lamb's Gujranwala jailbreak

England needed a daunting 91 off the last ten overs against West Indies. One batsman braved dehydration to cut the total down to size

It was a match that came alive in the death overs: West Indies compiled 243, and 92 of those runs came in the final ten overs. England began sedately in their chase, and found themselves needing 91 from the final ten with Allan Lamb standing as the last specialist batsman.

Kapil bedevils Zimbabwe

With the 175 that announced India's arrival on the one-day stage

Kapil Dev's India went in to the 1983 World Cup without expectations. They had won only one match, against East Africa, in the previous two editions, losing even to Sri Lanka, who were yet to be granted Test status. Kapil was 24. Few thought, least of all his team-mates, he was fit to be captain. He had been pitch-forked in to the job only four months earlier when India lost a Test series to Pakistan and Sunil Gavaskar had to pay the price. He was gauche, strategically naïve, and was still trying to come to terms with his sudden elevation.

King leaves Richards in the shade

West Indies were struggling at 99 for 4 in the 1979 final when their last front-line batsman came in and set the roof on fire

Ninety minutes into the 1979 World Cup final against England, West Indies were struggling. They had slipped to 99 for 4 when Collis King, the last of the frontline batsmen, came out to join Viv Richards. What followed was a breathtaking partnership, but surprisingly, Richards was mostly a spectator as King slaughtered the England attack at the other end.
