James Powell was a googly bowler who was given a trial by Middlesex as a professional in 1926 and 1927 and who impressed enough to play fairly regularly for two or three seasons. He made a sensational start, taking 8 for 72 in his fifth match, finishing the summer with 28 wickets at 22.25. He failed to build on that start, and he bowed out of first-class cricket with 5 for 42 and 3 for 48 for the MCC against The Army in 1931. He was a genuine No. 11 as his career record of 97 runs -only 20 more than his haul of wickets - underlines.
