Jack Van Geloven, who died in Edinburgh on August 21 after a long illness, aged 69, was the last Leicestershire player to do the double of 100 wickets and scoring 1,000 runs in a season. He played three times for his native county Yorkshire in 1955, before joining Leicestershire for whom he played from 1956 to 1965.

In sometimes difficult times for the county Van Geloven, a sound right-hand batter and medium-paced bowler from Guiseley, established himself as a most valuable allrounder with first-class figures of 247 matches, averaging 19.43 with the bat, 28.62 with the ball and 137 catches only partly reflecting his worth. His best season was 1962, when to 1055 runs he added exactly 100 wickets for his first, and only "double". He completed the feat by taking the 10th wicket in the second innings of the last match of the season.

After leaving Leicestershire Van Geloven played for Northumberland until 1973 and from 1977 to 1983 he was on the first-class umpires' list.
