A gifted top-order batsman, Goodman captained the England Under-16s in 2007 and performed well in county 2nd XI cricket. He was Kent's Academy Player of the Season in 2007, also earning a call-up to the club's first team against Sri Lanka A, though rain prevented him from batting. He was called up to the England squad for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup.
