Scotland capitulate after Netherlands' 210

Roelof van der Merwe's dogged half-century paved the way for an inspired Netherlands performance in the field as the hosts finished day two of the Intercontinental Cup clash with a commanding 175-run lead over Scotland at Voorburg. Van der Merwe top-scored with 73 off 136 balls in Netherlands' first-innings total of 210 before Vivian Kingma ripped through the Scotland top order with three wickets to set the visitors back at 35 for 6 in reply.

Scotland won the toss and elected to field but failed to maximize the new ball as Netherlands lost only two wickets in the first hour. Debutant Rahil Ahmed fell for 4, caught at third slip by Hamish Gardiner off Rob Taylor, while Michael Rippon was trapped in front defending down the wrong line to left-arm spinner Con de Lange for 30. Ali Evans came on for a second spell before lunch to shift the momentum Scotland's way. He got Ben Cooper out driving to backward point for 23, before Wesley Barresi was clean bowled to make it 75 for 4 shortly before lunch.

Pressure began to mount on Netherlands not long after play resumed in the afternoon session as Pieter Seelaar was bowled by Josh Davey not offering a shot, one of six such dismissals on the day. At 88 for 5, Van der Merwe was joined by Stephan Myburgh for an aggressive 65-run stand, and the pair scored at better than four an over. Myburgh's 35 off 40 balls included five boundaries and spurred Van der Merwe out of his shell. The former South African international brought up his 50 off 100 balls with his sixth four, off Evans through square leg, in the 50th over.

Myburgh finally fell to de Lange, well caught by Preston Mommsen at slip, to make it 153 for 6 before Peter Borren chopped onto his stumps off Safyaan Sharif for 11. Netherlands resumed the third session at 187 for 7 and Van der Merwe fell in the third over after the tea break, chipping back a return catch to Davey. Quirijn Gunning was bowled shouldering arms to put Davey on a hat-trick before Sharif ended the innings one ball into the 72nd over by sending Paul van Meekeren back to the pavilion in similar fashion for 11.

A first-innings total that appeared modest at first turned monstrous for Scotland in the final 90 minutes before stumps. Kingma roared his way to 3 for 9 in an eight-over opening spell to put a spring in the step of the Netherlands side. Gardiner left the sole delivery he faced only to hear the ping of his off stump knocked back to finish the first over.

Kingma took his second wicket, beating Matt Machan's attempted drive in the fifth over to make it 3 for 2 before Van der Merwe got into the act with the ball, inducing an edge from Kyle Coetzer to Borren at slip for 11. Kingma took his third in the following over and Mommsen became the second Scotland batsman to be dismissed leaving a ball that seamed back into his off stump.

Van Meekeren replaced Kingma at the Paddock End and worked his way into the Scotland tail-end by finding Richie Berrington's outside edge to give Borren his second catch at first slip. Van Meekeren then rounded out the day in fitting fashion, dismissing Davey who became the sixth batsman from either side to be bowled not playing a shot.
