It was the 1650th ODI in cricket history. It was India's 453rd and Sri Lanka's 335th ODI. It was the 65th meeting between these two sides. The record now reads: Sri Lanka 26, India 34, abandoned 5. Umpires Steve Dunne and George Sharp officiated in their 92nd and 21st match respectively. The third wicket partnership of 226 runs between Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene is Sri Lanka's best for any wicket in ODIs. This obliterates the previous record stand of 213 (unbeaten) also for the third wicket between Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva against Pakistan at Lahore on 11-05-1997. The partnership is also the highest for the third wicket at Sharjah bettering the 184 run-stand between Marvan Atapattu and Aravinda de Silva against Pakistan in 04-04-1997. The partnership is also the highest for any wicket in a day-night match at Sharjah beating the 197 run (unbroken) stand between Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar against Zimbabwe in 1998-99. Infact the partnership is the second best for any wicket in all day-night maches. Only the 252 run-stand between Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar for first wicket also against Sri Lanka at Colombo RP on 07-07-1998 betters this partnership. Jayawardene scored his third ODI hundred in his 57th match. His 128 is the highest by any batsman against India at Sharjah. This obliterates the previous best of 121* by Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq on 26-03-2000. Incidentally the previous highest for Sri Lanka against India was 88 by Aravinda de Silva on 25-03-1988. Jayawerdene's innings is also the second highest for Sri Lanka against India in a day-night match. The best however still remains as 151* by Sanath Jayasuriya at Mumbai Wankhede on 17-05-1997. It is also the second highest score by a Sri Lankan batsman at this venue after Aravinda de Silva's 134 against Pakistan on 07-04-1997. Atapattu (102*) and Jayawardene (128) provided the 34th instance when two hundreds were scored in the same innings in a ODI. Only once before Sri Lankan batsmen have managed to achieve this feat - against Pakistan at Lahore on 5-11-1997 when Jayasuriya (134 not out) and Aravinda de Silva (102 not out) made hundreds. This also provided the seventh such instance against India. Ajit Agarkar's three wickets in this match takes his career tally to 97 in 64 matches. He just went past the tally of Javagal Srinath who at the same stage of his career had 96 wickets in 64 matches. Just for the record, Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq had taken a record 122 wickets after his 64th match. Robin Singh's figures (4-0-36-0) are the most expensive by an Indian in a four over spell at this venue. This obliterates Ravi Shastri's figures of 4-0-35-0 against Pakistan on 20-10-1989. Sri Lanka's total of 294 for 5 is the highest by any team against India at Sharjah. The previous highest was 288 for 6 by South Africa on 14-04-1996. Sri Lanka's total is its third highest against India. However it was Sri Lanka's highest against India at a neutral venue. The previous best was the 276-8 it made at Dhaka on 01-06-2000. Just for the record, Sri Lanka's previous highest against India at this venue was 245 for 7 on 06-11-1998. The wicket of Robin Singh was 200th for Muthiah Muralitharan. He was playing his 147th match. He became the 12th bowler in ODI history to capture 200 or more wickets. At the end of the match he extended his tally of wickets to 206. Only two bowlers have taken more wickets than Muralitharan after 147 matches-Pakistan's Waqar Younis (247) and Australia's Shane Warne (230). Sachin Tendulkar on 25, completed his 1000 runs in the calendar year 2000. He became the sixth batsman to do so this year. In 28 matches he now has 1036 runs (avg. 37.00) during this year. Tendulkar's 61 was his 75th (26th hundred and 49th fifty) fifty-plus score in his career in 257 matches. He now holds the record of making most fifty plus scores in ODIs. Tendulkar was previously at level with West Indian Desmond Haynes with 74 fifty plus scores. The seventh wicket partnership of 77 runs between Hemang Badani and Vijay Dahiya is India's best for this wicket in a day-night match. This obliterates the previous record stand of 76 between Ajay Jadeja and Rajesh Chauhan against Pakistan at Lahore on 02-10-1997. The partnership is fourth best for India for seventh wicket in all matches. The partnership is also the highest for this wicket against Sri Lanka in a day-night match bettering the 73 run-stand between Mike Veletta and Tony Dodemaide for Australia at Sydney in 19-01-1988. Muttiah Muralitharan (7-30) recorded the best figures in one-day internationals. He became the third bowler to capture seven wickets in a match after West Indian Winston Davis (7-51) against Australia at Leeds on 11-06-1983 and Pakistani Aaqib Javed (7-37) against India at Sharjah on 25-10-1991. Just for the record, India's Anil Kumble's 6-12 against West Indies at Calcutta on 27-11-1993 was the previous best figures by a spinner in ODIs. The previous best bowling figures for Sri Lanka was 6-29 by Sanath Jayasuriya against England at Moratuwa on 20-03-1993. Muralitharan has now taken exactly 50 wickets at this venue. He becomes the first Sri Lankan and fourth bowler to do so after Pakistan's Wasim Akram (106), Waqar Younis (83) and India's Anil Kumble (56). Eric Upasantha's figures (5-0-41-0) are the second most expensive for Sri Lanka against India in a five over spell. The worst performance had come from Vinodan John who conceded 44 runs in his five overs at Delhi in 1982-83. The Man of the Match award was fourth for Muralitharan.
