Noel McMahon's first-class career spanned more than 13 years but consisted of only three matches, two before the war and one in 1949-50 when he was in a New Zealand side that played the Australians in what was regarded as an unofficial Test. While on the face of it his selection for that game might seem odd, it came after he made a 102 in 157 minutes for Waikato against the Australians the week before. He incurred the displeasure of New Zealand captain Walter Hadlee by arriving three minutes before the start of the 'Test' in which he scored 0 and 12.
