
John Jackson's `fearsome pace' was well enough known for Punch to produce this cartoon, the first ever on cricket, in August 1863.
BYSTANDER: `Good match, old fellow?'
BATSMAN: `Oh yes, awfully jolly'
BYSTANDER: `What did you do?'
BATSMAN: 'I had a hover of Jackson; the first ball 'it me on the 'and, and the second 'ad me on the knee; the third was in me eye; and the fourth bowled me out'.
