A technically sound left-handed batsman, Alex Amsterdam represented his native Guyana at the Under-19 level in 2009 but by the following year he had moved to New York. Qualifying to play for USA under the ICC's four-year residency guidelines, he made his USA debut at the 2015 World T20 Qualifier in Ireland.

Amsterdam was subsequently picked for a combined ICC Americas squad of USA and Canada players to go to Trinidad & Tobago for the 2016 WICB Nagico Super50 competition. His experience in the Caribbean from his junior days came through as he made 73 off 87 balls on List A debut against Barbados. He is utilised from time to time to bowl part-time offbreaks and is a sure-handed fielder.
