TEAMS

Arthur Peter Doggart died on March 17 in the Epsom District Hospital at the age of 37. He joined The Cricketer staff in 1950, and was a member for the next five years until a bad breakdown in health compelled him to resign. But for his ill health, against which he fought most bravely, he might well have become a valued member of the Sussex Xl. He made his debut for the county in 1947, which was an outstanding season for him as he scored over 2,000 runs, including hundreds against Essex 11 and Middlesex 11 and returned a double of 151 runs and seven wickets for 57 for the Incogniti against the United Services. Peter Doggart was a natural ballgames player. He was in the XI at Winchester in 1944 and 1945, batting particularly well against Eton and Marlborough, played soccer for his school, and appeared in an Arthur Dunn cup-tie in 1953 for the Old Wykehamists. Despite the nervous strain, he excelled at squash and on November 25, 1954, played for England v Wales, who were defeated 5-0. He was also invited to play against Scotland and Ireland, and for four years was an indispensable member of the winning Sussex team. All court games came alike to him. He was captain of Rackets for a term at Winchester and at Fives won the Winchester Singles - a notable record.
