Ed Young signed for Gloucestershire half-way through the 2010 season. He had impressed for Oxford MCCU, for whom he made his first-class début against Worcestershire in 2009 and scored 471 runs in 10 innings, including 133 as captain against Lancashire in 2011.
His quite flat and sharp left-arm spin and lower-order runs initially made him a one-day specialist for Gloucestershire; he has played every one-day match for the county since he joined. But having worked on his bowling at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Australia in the winter of 2011 he returned as a better option in four-day cricket, bowling slower and with more flight, and became Gloucestershire's first-choice spinner, albeit the only specialist in their squad.
