Eric Hill played 72 matches for the county between 1947 and 1951 as an opening batsman and also captained the second XI. His best score in the County Championship was 85, made against Northants at Kettering in 1948. After retiring from playing he moved into journalism and covered Somerset for almost 50 years for a variety of publications. He was sports editor of the Somerset County Gazette and rugby and cricket correspondent for the south-west for The Daily Telegraph. He also reported on England Test matches in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. For many years he contributed notes on Somerset matches to Wisden. He was awarded a DFC and DFM for his outstanding service with 544 Mosquito Squadron in World War Two.
