Born at Lewes on December 9, 1892. A right-arm fast bowler, he was in the Marlborough Eleven from 1909 to 1912, being captain in the last year. He headed the Marlborough bowling in 1910 and 1911, and was second in 1912. In his three matches against Rugby - he did not play in the 1910 game, which Rugby won easily - he took 21 wickets at 14.95.

He played for Cambridge in 1913 and 1914, gaining his blue as a Freshman, and on his two appearances in the University match took 7 wickets at 14.85. The 1912 Wisden said: "He is really fast, and can make the ball turn from the off on nearly any wicket. His action is a high and easy one, and, being tall, he often makes the ball get up very quickly. Moreover, what is most important, missed catches do not appear to worry him unduly, and he keeps on trying all the time."

In 1912 he appeared for Hampshire against the South Africans, and played one more match in 1913, taking eight wickets in the two games with a best of 5-33. In 1914 he played in two matches for Sussex and almost won the game against Surrey at the Oval by taking 6-43.

A year later, as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion Rifle Brigade, attached to 2nd Welsh Regiment, he was killed in action near Neuve Chappelle, France, on May 9, 1915, aged 22. His 19-year-old brother, 2nd Lieut Sidney Clayton Woodroffe (8th Rifle Brigade), was killed two months after him in 1915 while showing such bravery that he was awarded the VC.
