Sufiyan Shaikh is known in Mumbai's junior cricket circles as a promising wicketkeeper. He scored 208 runs and effected 26 dismissals in six matches in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2008-09. He later toured with the Indian Under-19 team to Australia and was named in the World Cup squad for New Zealand as the first-choice wicketkeeper. He started out as a close-in fielder and later took to wicketkeeping thanks to his sharp reflexes. Shaikh was always firm in his ambition to become a cricketer, despite opposition at home.
