Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah, through their 224-run stand for the fourth wicket - the highest ODI stand ever for Bangladesh - scripted a resounding five-wicket win against New Zealand in the Champion's Trophy in Cardiff on Friday.
Bangladesh, chasing 266, to keep their hopes alive in the tournament, was reduced to 33 for 4 in the first 12 overs. Shakib and Mahmudullah dropped anchor and began rebuilding an innings left in tatters by New Zealand's seamers, Trent Boult, Adam Milne and Tim Southee.
The duo began counterattacking with a four each in the 13th over. Mahmudullah switched gears and smashed James Neesham over midwicket for a six and a four. He then clobbered Corey Anderson. By the 31st over, both batsmen had reached their fifty, but the job had only been partially completed as Bangladesh still required 121 from 19 overs. The duo held their nerve and helped their side coast closer home. Shakib was finally dismissed in the 47th over for a 115-ball 114. Mahmudullah, remained unbeaten on 102, and guided Bangladesh home with 16 balls to spare.
The Shakib-Mahmudullah stand went past the 178-run Tamim Iqbal-Mushfiqur Rahim stand against Pakistan in 2015. The partnership is also the second-highest for any wicket in Champions Trophy history. The only bigger stand was unbeaten 252 runs between Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting against England in the semi-finals of 2009 Champions Trophy in Centurion.
