Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the two-T20 series against Bangladesh next week after sustaining a lower-back strain. JP Duminy will captain the team in his absence while allrounder Dwaine Pretorius has been added to the squad.
Du Plessis retired hurt on 91 during the third ODI in East London and was not able to continue batting or return to the field. He will return home to Cape Town on Sunday night and receive treatment over the week. There is no rush for du Plessis to return to action with South Africa's international calendar blank until Boxing Day.
Between now and then, South Africa are likely to hold their franchise T20 competition, in place of the postponed of the T20 Global League. With all national players expected to be available for the competition, du Plessis is likely to turn out for Titans after his recovery.
He joins a long list of injured players including David Miller, who had to piggyback du Plessis off the field despite carrying a groin injury, Wayne Parnell, Morne Morkel, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi and Duanne Olivier, who are all at various stages of recovery.
South Africa's T20 squad is also without Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir, who have been rested but have several senior batsmen to bolster the ranks. AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Duminy have all been included.
