West Indies v Australia

Wisden's review of the Final, West Indies v Australia

15-Apr-2017
At Bridgetown, Barbados, June 26, 2016 (day/night). Australia won by 58 runs. Toss: Australia.
Mitchell Marsh's spell of three for six decided the contest - and backed up Smith's pre-match claim that "Australia always step up in finals" - after Wade's resourceful knock had set a defendable score. Australia's top five all made starts without settling, as the odd ball misbehaved and the spinners extracted purchase. At 173 for six in the 37th over, a modest total seemed likely, before Wade skilfully shepherded the total towards 270 for nine. He was particularly productive through the leg side, belting three sixes between long-on and midwicket, including the last ball of the innings, from Brathwaite. West Indies' chase began promisingly, but Hazlewood removed Fletcher, and Marsh - preferred to James Faulkner - left them in tatters at 72 for four, accounting for Bravo, Samuels and Charles in consecutive overs. The damage proved irrevocable, and Hazlewood mopped up the tail for his second ODI five-for. It was the first major 50-over final West Indies had reached since 2006, but the crowd went home disappointed.
Man of the Match: M. R. Marsh. Man of the Series: J. R. Hazlewood.
